GOULD
James Harold Gould, 77, of Hague, Va., formerly of Richmond, Va., died Tuesday, July 16, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Mitchell Gould; his children, James Harold Gould Jr. of Montpelier, Barbara Gould Hill of Spotsylvania County, Patricia Gould Billingsley of Rockville, Candace Melton Henry of Chesterfield, J. Glenn Melton of Augusta, Ga. and Robert C. Melton of Tegacay, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Gould Grant; nieces and nephews; and his loving dog, Sam. He was preceded in death by a son, James Roderick Melton Jr. Mr. Gould was a charter member of Derbyshire Baptist Church. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and was a nose gunner in the European campaigns, Italy and France, from January to April 1945. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. He worked for 18 years in Hanover County designing many schools and renovations, the first being Pearson's Corner Elementary School. The first large school he designed was Hermitage High School. He also worked 18 years in Spotsylvania County, where he also did many schools and renovations. His largest accomplishments were Spotsylvania High School and Courtland High School. He also designed schools in Chesterfield, Amherst, Lancaster and Greene Counties. Mr. Gould was one of the organizers of the Virginia Association of Professionals, and also of the Virginia Capital Bank. He was a member of the AIA and a board member of the Tuckahoe Little League and also designed their complex. He was a professional singer at Westwood Supper Club and had two radio shows at WRVA. His family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Derbyshire Baptist Church. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Westmoreland Volunteer Rescue Squad.

HANCOCK
David Olney Hancock, 80, went to be with the Lord on July 15, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Gladys Rebecca (Becky) Hancock; one son, David C. Hancock and his wife, Renee'; two daughters, Janice H. Ellis and her husband, Lloyd and Judy H. Gibson; four grandchildren, Allen and Lindsay Hancock, Tyler and Brad Ellis; four sisters, Lenna McIver, Evelyn Hancock and Avalyn Bittle, all of Richmond, and Anne McFarland and her husband, Arnold of New Madison, Ohio. David was retired from Richmond Engineering Company and was a longtime member of Bethany Place Baptist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and where the funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

HART
Gladys Landers Hart, a Richmond native, died at home on Tuesday, July 16, 2002. Mrs. Hart was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest R. Hart. She is survived by a sister, Ruth L. Barnes of Newport News. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, July 19 at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery.

HOBBIE
Eldridge (Ridge) M. Hobbie Jr., age 55, died July 15, 2002. He is survived by three sisters, Janis H. Austin of Sandston; Forrestt H. Grubbs of Richmond and Lenore Hobbie Carlson of Quinton; and several nieces and nephews. An informal memorial service will be scheduled in the near future. Family members can be contacted for further information.

HOLT
Annie Josephine Williams Holt, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and "Nanny" to us all, died July 14, 2002. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Holt Johnson and her husband, Gerald F., Sarah Holt Payne and her husband, Raymond H., and Martha Holt Ford and her husband, Jerry L.; grandchildren, Benjamin Holt Johnson and wife, Lynn, Michael Joseph Johnson, Elizabeth Payne Moore and her husband, Scott, Christine Payne Elmore and her husband, Jason, Jennifer Ford Pace and her husband, Bradley, Jerry Lee Ford Jr. and his wife, Mary; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Nathan, Reese, William, Alexander, Molly, Matthew, Emma, and Jacob. Private funeral services were held at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel with interment at Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter.

JOHNSON
Departed this life July 15, 2002, Mrs. Elenora G. Johnson of Richmond. She leaves with cherished memories three sons, Harold Johnson of Maryland, Charles and Robert D. Johnson; one daughter, Mary Wilborn; 31 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Walker; a host of nieces and nephews, three daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law; her devoted friend and nurse, Faye Johnson; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Thursday, 7 to 8 p.m. Remains will lie in state Friday, 10 a.m. at Cedar Street Baptist Church of God, 2301 Cedar St., where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Dr. Benjamin W. Robertson, pastor, Dr. Willie C. Thompson Sr. officiating. Burial Maury Cemetery.

KARPUS
Edmund Charles Karpus, age 77, of 201 Pine Acres Dr., Henrico, N.C., formerly of Chester, Va., died Tuesday, July 16, 2002. Mr. Karpus was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and a retired school teacher and coach at Thomas Dale High School in Chester, Va. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Smith Karpus; three daughters, Lynn K. Holt and her husband, M.T. of South Hill, Va., Peggy K. Lynn of Fredericksburg, Va., Lori K. DeZarn and her husband, Joe of Winchester, Va.; one son, Edmund Charles "Chip" Karpus and his fiancee, Darleen Williams of Chester, Va.; one sister, Virginia Karpus of San Antonio, Florida; two brothers, Albert Karpus of Shelton, Conn., Charles Karpus of San Antonio, Florida; seven grandchildren, Tia Williams, Taylor Holt, Trica Morrow, Chris Holt, Christopher Karpus, Graham DeZarn, Stefan DeZarn; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 19, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the All Saints Episcopal Church, Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Robert Alvis officiating. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 20, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the St. Johns Episcopal Church in Chester, Va. Rev. Robert Armstrong officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Coach Ed Karpus Athletic Scholarship Fund, care of Thomas Dale High School, 3626 W. Hundred Rd., Chester, Va. 23831. Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral Services in Roanoke Rapids, N.C.

LIPSCOMB
Cecelia Mae Lipscomb, 59, of Aylett, Va., entered eternal rest on Monday, July 15, 2002, after a heroic battle with cancer. She is survived by her son, L.A. Lipscomb and his wife, Whitney Lipscomb and grandsons, Quinton and Tanner Lipscomb; her daughter, Alicia L. Ancarrow and her husband, Brian Ancarrow; two sisters, Wilma Hurtt and April Allen, her husband, Junie Allen and their sons, Timothy and Christopher Allen; and one brother, Roy Allen and wife, Ann Tyler Allen and their daughters, Morgan, Carter and Meg Allen. She is fondly remembered by all of her family and friends and touched a special place in the hearts of all who knew her. Her remains rest at B.W. White Funeral Home, 7837 Richmond-Tappahannock Highway in Aylett, where family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 10 to 2 and 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Colosse Baptist Church. LUCK
Blanche Harris Luck of Montpelier passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Chester L. Luck; two daughters, Helen Rose Luck of Montpelier and Connie and husband, Stoney Stone of Richmond; one grandson, J. Harvey Stone of Richmond. She was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters. Remains rest at the Beaverdam Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Chapel Church of Christ. Interment Oak Grove Wesleyan Church Cemetery.

MABE
Louise Rock Mabe, 84, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 15, 2002. She was the widow of Woodrow Wilson Mabe Sr. and was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn M. Fischer. She is survived by her daughters, Mildred M. Kelly and Charlotte M. Lanier; sons, Thomas T., Julian "Jay" A., J. Bruce and Woodrow W. Mabe Jr.; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment in Maury Cemetery. Alma M. (Big Mama) Mahanes of Montpelier passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2002. She is survived by a son, Robert Mahanes of Hanover; two daughters and husbands, Lois and Jerry Conwell of Montpelier and Lucille and Eugene Martin of Goochland; also eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two stepdaughters and one stepgreat-grandson. Remains rest at the Beaverdam Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Montpelier. Interment church cemetery.

MINOR
The Reverend Harold Whitfield Minor, AB, MDiv, DD, 77, died peacefully at home on July 14, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Susan Miller Corbett; three daughters, Louise Lyon of Atlanta, Ga., Elizabeth Wood of Cumming, Ga., Margaret Truslow of Catlett, Va.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two stepchildren, Elizabeth Corbett of Richmond and Christopher of New York City; and one stepgrandchild. He was formerly married to Louise Hoyt Minor of Atlanta, Ga. The Rev. Mr. Minor received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. He also studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and was awarded an honorable doctorate from King College. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. He was an ordained Presbyterian minister, licensed counselor, therapist and teacher. The Rev. Mr. Minor also wrote, taught and lectured extensively on the subjects of human sexuality and family relationships. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 20 at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 N. Fifth St. in downtown Richmond. Memorial offerings may be made to the ACLU or the Metropolitan Community Church of Richmond, 2501 Park Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23220.

James E. (Buck) New, 73, of Richmond, died July 6, 2002. Survived by two brothers, Arthur and Richard New; two nephews, one grand-niece, one sister-in-law. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday night, July 21, 2002 at Corinth United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Corinth United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. OWENS
Jerry Thomas Owens, a resident of Monkton, Maryland, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002 of complications from a long battle with lung cancer. He was 50 years old. Born August 13, 1951 in Richmond, Virginia, he was the second son of Harold G. (deceased) and Mildred Wiltshire. The family settled in Ashland, Kentucky. In 1973 Jerry graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature and Psychology. He settled in the Baltimore area in 1979 and began working for Koch Associates, Inc., a manufacturer's representative. He eventually purchased the business and received numerous sales awards until his retirement in 2001. In 1991 he married Caroline Foster, D.D.S., a graduate of Randolph Macon College and MCV. They settled in Monkton, Md. He is survived by two sons, John Foster, 6 and Joseph Thomas, 4. In addition to his wife and children, Jerry is survived by his mother, Mrs. Harold G. Owens of Richmond, Virginia; a brother, Mr. Danny Owens of Louisville, Kentucky; and a sister, Mrs. Linda Smith of Richmond, Virginia. Friends may call at the Ruck Funeral Home in Towson, Maryland on Friday, July 19, 2002, A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2002 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 4135 Norrisvillie Road, White Hall, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be sent in memory of Jerry T. Owens to The Thoracic Oncology Program at the University of Maryland Medical Systems, 29 South Greene Street, Room 500, Baltimore, Md. 21201.
