EDWARDS
Oneita Mae Jester Edwards, age 100, formerly of Surry, died Thursday, September 12, 2002 in Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. She was a native of Chincoteague, Virginia, a homemaker and a member of Surry United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 26 years. She was a member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, Daughters of the American Revolution, Col. William Allen Chapter and the Thomas Rolfe Branch of the APVA. She was the widow of the late S. Wallace Edwards Sr. Mrs. Edwards and her husband were the founders of S. Wallace Edwards & Sons. Survivors include son, S. Wallace Edwards Jr. and his wife, Yvonne of Surry; daughter, Oneita E. Johnson of Prince George; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, September 15 at 2 p.m. in Surry United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Burial will follow in Old St. Luke's Cemetery, Smithfield. The family will receive friends Saturday, September 14 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Surry United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 118, Surry, Virginia 23883.

FUTTER
Stephanie Dean Futter, 32, of Mechanicsville, passed away on September 5, 2002. She is survived by her mother, Carolyn Futter; father, Martin Futter; sister, Elizabeth Boltz; her nephews, Nicholas and Christopher Boltz; brother, Matthew Futter; and fiance, Bob Bastek of Mechanicsville. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Sunday, September 15, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Road, Glen Allen, Virginia. Stephanie will be buried in New York City on Tuesday, September 17, 2002, by her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

GLOVER
Melvin L. Glover Sr., known as "Salty" to his friends, and also a father, teacher, coach and friend, passed peacefully into the hands of God Tuesday, September 10, 2002. Born February 8, 1918 in Charleston, South Carolina to Lenora Naomi Ballard and Charles A. Glover Sr. He grew up in Harlem, New York and graduated from De Witt Clinton High School in 1937. He graduated from Virginia Union University where he was a member of Virginia Union's original "dream team," CIAA championship basketball teams 1939 to 1943. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Aircorps, WWII. Mr. Glover also played for the Negro professional basketball league in Washington, D.C. He taught at Virginia Randolph, Maggie Walker High School and John Marshall High School. He received a Master's Degree of Education in Earth Science in May of 1975. Mr. Glover was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Iota Sigma Chapter. He is survived by his son, Melvin L. Glover Jr. (Ras Mel); grandson, Menilik I. Glover; his brother, Charles A. Glover Jr.; nephew, Charles Glover III; niece, Constance Mann; goddaughter, Juanita Jackson Byam; and a host of family and friends. He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Peace and love. Memorial services will be held 5 p.m. Saturday at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Rev. Andrew Jackson officiating.

GOODE
Ellen May Goode, 81, of Richmond, died Tuesday, September 10, 2002. She was the daughter of the late Harry S. and Lillian Smith Goode and was preceded in death by a sister, Betty G. Wood. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jane G. Goodman and Mrs. Nancy G. Lynn, both of Richmond; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held later.

GRAY
Departed this life September 10, 2002, Robert W. Gray Jr. of 1902 Winder Street. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Robert W. and Fannie Gray. He is survived by his wife, Marcella A. Gray; two sons, Robert D. and Marcus A. Gray; four grandchildren, Latoya, Sheena and Jamal Gray and Marcus Massenburg; two sisters, Deloris Murchison; and Farnelia Overton; three brothers, Wilbert, Leroy and Morrison Gray; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; mother-in-law, Mrs. Ida Bower; seven sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Earl M. Brown officiating. Interment Emmaus Baptist Church Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 12:45 p.m. Saturday.

HANEY
Virginia Gallihugh Haney, 84, of Midlothian, formerly of Charlottesville and Gordonsville, died Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at Lucy Corr Nursing Home. She is survived by her husband, Cecil G. Haney of Midlothian; one daughter, Rebecca H. Thomas and husband, Larry of Midlothian; one son, Timothy G. Haney and wife, Bonnie of Charleston, S.C.; three grandchildren, Timothy, Tyler and Titus Haney. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, September 14 at 11 a.m. in Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, Va. 23060. Remains rest at Preddy Funeral Chapel, 250 W. Main St., Orange.

HITE
Mrs. Daisy I. Hite departed this life September 9, 2002. She is survived by three sons, Richard B., John C. and Robert A. Williams; one daughter, Virginia A. Valentine; 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, three daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, other relatives and friends. Her remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Remains will lie in state Saturday, 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 29th and E. Marshall Sts., where funeral services will be held 12 noon. Rev. Brian Brown officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery.

Rudolph R. (Rudy) Lee, 69, of 2055 St. James Rd., Richmond, departed this life on September 10, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Lee; one daughter, Jeanette Lee of Arizona; one son, Wayne Lee; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; two devoted friends, David Carter and Carolyn Reaves; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. LEWIS
Alma Butterworth Lewis, 85, of Dinwiddie County, died Thursday, September 12, 2002 at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond. She was the daughter of the late Abner Goode and Julia Harris Butterworth and the wife of Richard Edwin Lewis. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and Christian. She graduated from Longwood College and was a volunteer with The Children's Home Society of Virginia and the American Cancer Society. She is survived by a daughter, Julia L. Roberts and husband, Thomas W. of Richmond; a son, Richard E. Lewis Jr. and wife, Barbara S. of Dinwiddie; four grandchildren, Richard Clay and William Hunt Lewis, Thomas Hunt and Lee Harris Roberts; and a sister, Elizabeth B. Soyars of Richmond. A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, September 16, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Butterworth Family Cemetery, Dinwiddie, Va. Earl W. Luck Jr., 58, of Ashland, passed away September 10, 2002. He was the widower of Virginia Kirby Luck. He is survived by two children, Margaret Anne Shinault and William E. Luck; two sisters, Barbara Melton and Hattie Dinsmore; and four grandchildren, Doug, Jessica, Hailey and Drew. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Calvary Christian Church Cemetery. Mr. Clarence McFarland Sr. of Richmond entered into eternal rest September 9, 2002. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra McFarland-Kittrell. He is survived by his loving, devoted and caring wife, Leatha B. McFarland; four devoted children, Michael (Magnolia), Clarence Jr., Zipporah and Linda McFarland-Jones; four devoted stepchildren, Hardy Mercer (Deloris), Gladys Lesand of Baltimore, Md., Daisy Lambert and Chainibell Brooks (Bobby); seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a host of stepgrand, stepgreat-grand and stepgreat-great-grandchildren; one sister, Sadie Bolling; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. NAVE
Rev. Lester D. Nave died September 11, 2002 at his home in Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Frances; three sons, David and his wife, Susan of Sanford, N.C., Bruce of Virginia Beach and Kirk and his wife, Stefanie of Stephens City; stepdaughter, Sheila Ray and her husband, Steve; stepson, David Callis and his wife, Suzanne of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, Brittany, Austin, Wilson, Taylor, Billy, Joey, Gary and Maggie; five stepgrandchildren, Andrew, Jacob and Zachary Ray, Matthew and Philip Callis; two sisters, Helen Nave Grills of Kingsport, Tenn. and Gladys Matheson of Bennettsville, S.C.; and one brother, John Nave of Kingsport, Tenn. He served as pastor of Greenwood U.M.C. in 1961 and Welborne U.M.C. from 1962 to 1969, where he was named Pastor Emeritus in 1998. A graveside service will be held 3:30 p.m. Friday (today) at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, Va. A Service of Celebration will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2002 at Welborne United Methodist Church with visitation immediately following. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Welborne United Methodist Church or the American Parkinson's Disease Association.

NEWBILL
Helen E. Newbill, 94, of Richmond, widow of James B. Newbill, died Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at the Eastern Star Home of Virginia. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Paul H. Newbill; and three sisters-in-law, Dorothy N. Burcham, Gladys N. Carter and Mary N. Wentz. Mrs. Newbill was a member of Fairmount Christian Church and Areme Chapter No. 17, O.E.S. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 14. Interment in Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Eastern Star Home of Virginia, 3000 Chamberlayne Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227.

Departed this life September 8, 2002, Mrs. Annie Slade Porter of 2102 Rosewood Ave. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel Porter Sr. She is survived by two sons, Nathaniel Jr. and Ronald L. Porter; three grandchildren, Patrice Acquaye, Michael Lyons and Tonya L. Porter; four great-grandchildren; one brother, William Cain of New York; several nieces and nephews, among them, Idell Mayo, Mary Jones, Iris Houston, Nathaniel Travis and John Slade III; and cousins; one sister-in-law, Ethel Slade; and other relatives and friends, among them, godson, Albert Ghee.
