Mrs. Margaret Matthews Thompson, 87, of Richmond, departed this life on Thursday, September 12, 2002. The wife of the late Harrison (Lighting) Thompson, she leaves to cherish her memories, two sons, Sterling Matthews and wife, Gloria J., Waverly Thompson and Sallie; seven grandchildren, host of great-grandchildren; nephew, George Matthews and wife, Carmen; niece, Shirley A. Curtis; host of other nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Sue Matthews. Her remains will lie in state Monday, September 16, at K.L. Jordan Funeral Services, 5008 Nine Mile Rd., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 17. Interment at Oakwood Cemetery. Professional family care services by K.L. WEIDMAN
James Weidman, age 79, a retired Navy veteran 1st Class Chief Petty Officer, all Navy baseball and basketball and retired farmer, of Rawlings, Va., died September 14, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Florence Halstead Weidman; four children, Charles Halstead Weidman of Burgess, Ronald Ray Weidman of Chesterfield, John James Weidman of Adsit, and Verda Lynn Cohen of Petersburg; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Grayson of Jacksonville, Fla. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Crestview Memorial Park, South Hill. The family will be at the residence. Arrangements by Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville.

WEST
Mrs. Mary G. West of Chester, Va. departed this life Thursday, September 12, 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Jeraline Wells (Leon); 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Barbara S. Goode; two nephews, a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Graveside service will be held Monday, September 16, 11 a.m., Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Dr. Wilson E.B. Shannon officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church, "Haven for Hope" Fund, 2920 Kingsdale Rd. Relatives and friends assemble at the cemetery Monday, 10:45 a.m. Please omit food.

ABBOTT
Mrs. Virginia Odell Tune Abbott, of 3070 Howard P. Anderson Road, Halifax, Va., died August 23, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born in Halifax County, Va. on June 22, 1921 and was 80 years old. She was the daughter of Mr. George Edward Tune Sr. and Mrs. Pattie Rebecca Blanks Tune and was married to William Alexander "Alex" Abbott. She was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church where was a member of the choir and a Sunday School teacher. She was a former member of the ABWA and Halifax Women's Club. She was one of the founders of Abbott Farm Suppliers. Mrs. Abbott is survived by two daughters, Rebecca A. Holt of Danville, Sara A. Bradshaw of Richmond; one son, William A. "Bill" Abbott of Halifax; one sister, Jean Tune Hall of Powhatan; seven grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Abbott will be held Saturday, August 25 at 2 p.m. at Winns Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw and the Rev. Richard Welch conducting the service. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at her home, 3070 Howard P. Anderson Road, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Foundation for Fighting Blindness, P. O. Box 17279, Baltimore, Md. 21297. John Alexander Sr. departed this life Thursday, August 23, 2001 at Henrico Doctors' Parham South Hospital. Professional services provided by Crawley Funeral Home, 3810 Meadowbridge Rd. Funeral notice later.

ALLSHOUSE
John R. Allshouse, 89, of Moseley, Va., died August 24, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Doris B. Allshouse; sister, Joy Berry. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). His funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday in the Wakefield Cemetery, Wakefield, Va. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, Va. 23226.

ANDRZEJEWSKI
Selma Rosa Andrzejewski of Richmond departed us peacefully on Monday, August 20, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Jozef; two devoted children, son Eddie Crawford and his wife Debbie, and daughter Marion Crawford; sister, Inge, and husband, Ludwig of Germany; devoted stepchildren Cheryl Elam and husband, Brent, Joseph Andrzejewski and wife, Anke, Michael Andrzejewski and wife, Debbie, Ken Andrzejewski and wife, Pam; nine grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many loving friends through the YMCA, church and Nabisco. A memorial service will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, August 25, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1100 W. Grace St. A celebration of life will follow in the fellowship hall. Any flowers or remembrances may be brought or sent to the church between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 25th. Contributions may be given to the church building fund.

BURNETTE
Betty Fisher Burnette died on August 23, 2001. She was the daughter of the late, Roy H. and Clara J. Fisher of Blackstone. She is survived by her husband, Donald G. Burnette; two sons, Donald G. Jr. and his wife, Susan, and Gregory F. Burnette, all of Richmond; three grandchildren, Jessica, Amanda and Gray III Burnette. Also surviving is a brother, Charles M. Fisher and his wife, Marie of Blackstone. She was predeceased by a brother, E.L. Fisher of Portsmouth, his wife, Audrey survives. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 45 years, an avid supporter of Douglas Freeman High School sports and was presented a special award by its Boosters Club in 1975 in recognition for her contributions. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 25 in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Richmond Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

BUTLER
David Franklin Butler, 33, of Midlothian, died Wednesday, August 22, 2001. He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Ann Butler and is survived by his wife, Brandy Butler; two sons, Garrett Coleman Butler and Carson Steele Butler; two sisters, Tricia Montoney, Sherry Branham; his proud in-laws, Larry and Beth Dunn; a sister-in-law, Dallas Dunn; and a uncle, David Coleman. His family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 26. Interment in Sterling Memorial Park, Sterling, Va., at 1 p.m. Monday.

CHAPMAN
Ruth Tiller Chapman, 92, died Thursday, August 23, 2001 in Jacksonville, Fla. She was the widow of Raymond F. Chapman Sr. She is survived by a son, Raymond F. Chapman Jr.; her daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Frank Edmonds of Jacksonville, Fla; also six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

CONNER
Edna Conner, 95, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on August 24, 2001. She is survived by her daughters, Doris M. Norby and Lois Bartholomew Armel; her sons, Robert C. and Jesse F. Conner; her sister, Lucy Garber; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. The family will receive friends 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment in Maury Cemetery.

COUTURE
Esther S. Couture, 89, of Goochland, Va., died August 23, 2001. She is survived by one son, Richard T. Couture of Goochland, Va.; and two grandchildren, Victoria and Nichole Couture. Remains rest at Norman Funeral Home in Goochland, Va., where family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held Sunday, August 26, 2001, 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Goochland, Va. Interment Cartersville Cemetery, Cartersville, Va. Memorials may be made to C.P.C., St. James Episcopal Church, Cartersville, Va.

DUNKUM
Ruby Florence Dunkum, 92, of Gordonsville, died Friday, August 24, 2001 at the Gordon House in Gordonsville. Born November 13, 1908 in Louisa County, she was a daughter of the late William Richard Dunkum and Mary Lou Marks Dunkum. Ms. Dunkum was retired from the Fairfax County School System where she served as a former principal at McLean Elementary School. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and a member of the Gordonsville United Methodist Church. She is survived by one brother, C.C. Dunkum and his wife, Dorothy of Gordonsville; one sister, Jessie D. Dunn of Trevillians; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Dunkum of Mechanicsville, Lou Dunkum of Dillwyn; five nephews, three nieces and a host of other relatives. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Richard Dunkum Jr. and Woodrow Marks Dunkum. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1;30 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2001 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa with the Rev. Marilyn Spencer officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gordonsville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 466, Gordonsville, Va. 22942. Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville, is in charge of arrangements.

GRANTHAM
Doris Holland Grantham, 67, of Rincon, Ga., formerly of Richmond, Va. and Deltaville, Va., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 22, 2001. She was the widow of Richard V. Grantham Sr., Richard F. Ludwig and Elmer E. Fugett. She was preceded in death by her sister, Christine Hill. She is survived by her sons, Richard V. Grantham Jr. and his wife, Patricia, Gary W. Grantham and his wife, Monetta; sisters, Suella Gowan, Elizabeth Grisham and Mildred Buffaloe; brothers, Cordie Holland Jr., Daniel Holland and Harley Holland; grandson, Joseph Grantham. The family will receive friends 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10), where funeral services will beheld at 11 a.m. Monday. Interment at Dale Memorial Park. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Goshen United Methodist Church Building Fund, 6227 Hwy. 21 S., Rincon, Ga. 31326.

GROOM
Carol R. Groom of Richmond, Va. passed away August 23, 2001 at Alexandria Hospital. She is preceded in death by her husbands, H. Kenneth Groom and Dr. F. Logan Robinson. She was one of eight children and enjoyed her family, friends, tennis, gardening and fishing. Carol was a compassionate friend and family confidant to all. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Carol L. Robinson of Springfield, Va.; and son, Fred L. Robinson, M.D. of Williamsburg, Va. "Mippy" will be missed by her three grandchidren, Megan, Chris and Rick Robinson. She is also survived by two sisters, Sarah Ann Prather and Effie Hann Bigger; one brother, Earl H. Hann, all of Richmond; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family service will be held on Monday, August 27, 2001, 9:30 a.m., at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

HERNDON
Robert Wilson Herndon, 74, passed away suddenly on August 24, 2001. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and retiree of Reynolds Metal. He was preceded in death by his son Bill and is survived by his wife Lori; two sisters, June Fischer and Mary Spain; children, Dianne, Robert, Erik, Steven, Gary, Jeff, Laurie, and Donna; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road on Sunday, August 26, 2001 from 3 to 6 p.m.
