MERRILL
William Daniel Merrill "Burl", 36, of King William County, Va., died January 3, 2001 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Courtney Collins Merrill; a son, William Tyler "Ty", age 4; and a daughter, Austyn Elizabeth, age 3; his mother and father-in-law, Merry and Bill Collins of Mechanicsville; a sister and brother-in-law, Dina and James Carter; a nephew, Kenny Carter, all of Worcester, Mass. He is also survived by many loving friends who became his extended family years ago. He was preceded in death by his parents, William K. and Betty Jean T. Merrill. Mr. Merrill was a freight conductor with CSX Railroad. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2001, with burial in Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the "Ty" and Austyn Merrill Fund c/o Bank of Essex, P.O. Box 26, Manquin, Va. 23106.

MICKEY
Roy M. Mickey of 6821 Carnation St. died January 1, 2001. Surviving are his devoted wife, Rose M. Mickey; three daughters, Erika Simms, Malika Mickey and Marcella Hairston; one son, Milton Mickey; mother, Alberta W. Mickey; two grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria Nelson and Mildred Mickey; three brothers, Gus, Calvin and James Mickey; seven aunts, three uncles, host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where the family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. After 12:30 p.m. Friday, remains will rest in Sharon Baptist Church, First and Leigh Sts., where funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Rev. Daniel Goodall officiating. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

PEERY
Robert Campbell Peery, 81, of Richmond, died Wednesday, January 3, 2001. A native of Tazewell, Va., he was the son of the late Wade H. and Carrie McGuire Peery. After a year of college preparatory work at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Mr. Peery attended Washington and Lee University, graduating in 1941. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Mr. Peery served as a naval officer during World War II and was the managing partner at the accounting firm of A. M. Pullen & Co. at the time of his retirement in 1985. He was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, the Richmond Rotary Club, the Navy League, the Metro-Richmond Three Score Golf Association and The Country Club of Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Mary Stewart Buford Peery; four children, Jennie Peery Baumann Rudd and her husband, George, Robert Campbell Peery Jr. and his wife, Laura, William McGuire Peery and his wife, Colleen and John Stewart Peery; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Saturday, January 6, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Forest and Patterson Avenues. Interment in Hollywood Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the St. Matthews Endowment Fund, the North Tazewell United Methodist Church, North Tazewell, Va. 24630 or to the charity of your choice.

POTTS
Ann Archer Irving Potts, age 94, of Amelia, died January 2, 2001. She is survived by her son, Richard Irving Potts of Amelia, and was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Harrell Potts, Jr; and her son, Joseph Kincaid Potts. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2001 at Christ Episcopal Church in Amelia. Mrs. Potts was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and also of the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia and of the Colonial Dames in Virginia. Burial in Grub Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home of Amelia.

PULLIAM
Departed this life on December 30, 2000, Ms. Jewel C. Pulliam. She is survived by three sons, Shannon B., Saaeda R. and Jerome R. Pulliam; stepson, Toriand Lewis; one devoted grandchild, Keon Vaughn; two brothers, six sisters, two aunts, host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral services will be held Friday 12 noon from Seventh Street Memorial Baptist Church.

RHODES
Ada Sowers Rhodes, 75, of Richmond, formerly of Pulaski, Va., died Tuesday, January 2, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah and her husband, Lee Hollandsworth; one grandson, Justin Bethea; one sister, Murlie King of Richmond; one brother, Walter Sowers of Dublin, Va.; and all others that loved her. Mrs. Rhodes was a longtime employee of the Liggett Myers Tobacco Co. and a retired employee of AT&T. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and where services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park.

RUSSELL
Cornell Jesse Russell of 10207 Wolfe Manor Ct., Glen Allen, Va., formerly of Charles City County, died January 1, 2001. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Ethel P. and Harmon F. Johnson Sr.; a son, Jesse Geimar Russell; a daughter, Patrice Lyons; three sisters, Felicia Johnson, Antoinette Wallace and Alesia Johnson; brother, Harmon F. Johnson Jr.; paternal grandmother, Lilly Parrish; devoted fiancee', Bernadine Cotman; one sister-in-law, Tammy Johnson; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. After 10 a.m. Saturday, remains will rest at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Charles City, Va., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Rev. Dr. Alvin E. Drew officiating. Interment church cemetery.

SAYLES
Departed this life January 1, 2001, Mrs. Carrie B. Woody Sayles of 617 Grayson Ave. She is survived by two sons, Michael A. and Victor K. Woody; one granddaughter, Ariyana Woody; one aunt, Sarah C. Woody; two uncles, Charles R. Woody and Moses Aaron Woody Sr.; a host of cousins, among them, Sarah E. Johnson; one daughter-in-law, D Jaris A. Woody; and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday. Rev. W.I. Hatch officiating. Interment Riverview Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 10:45 p.m. Friday. Also at Legacy.com.

SEYMOUR
Mrs. Joyce Phillips Seymour, age 67, of Brodnax, Va., died January 3, 2001 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late William Atwell and Minnie Phillips and a victim of multiple sclerosis for 29 years. She is survived by her husband, Ryland Seymour; and a daughter, Mitzi S. Hendrick and her husband, David of South Hill; a granddaughter, Alexis Hendrick; a brother, Vaiden Phillips of Lawrenceville; four nieces and eight nephews; a dear and faithful friend, Frances Headspeth and her husband, Raymond. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery, South Hill. The family will receive friends at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National MS Foundation, 1301 North Hamilton St., Suite 108, Richmond, Va. 23230.

SIMMONS
Margie Elaine Simmons, 79, of Glen Allen, died Tuesday, January 2, 2001. She is survived by one nephew, Byron Peterson of Richmond; numerous great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. Miss Simmons was a member of Derbyshire Baptist Church. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, January 5 at Derbyshire Baptist Church Chapel, 8800 Derbyshire Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Derbyshire Baptist Church. Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

SMITH
Clara Smith, age 87 of King William, died December 30, 2000. She is survived by three children, Diane, Helen and Albert. Service 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church. Remains rest at the B.W. White Funeral Home.

SMITH
Everett Walker Smith, age 72, of Oldhams, died on January 3, 2001. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Oldhams, retired principal of Richmond County Intermediate School, a farmer, and had served with Hospice Support Services of the N.N. for the past five years. Surviving are his wife, Emily Lyell Smith; a son, Everett Allerd Smith II of Warsaw; and a daughter, Sallie Smith Twentyman and her husband, Dr. Scott S. Twentyman of Falls Church City; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Lyell and Stephen Walker Twentyman; two sisters, Mary Smith Hertling of Warsaw and Betty Smith Cox; and a brother-in-law, William J. Cox of Richmond; and one aunt, Miss Ruby Smith of Manassas. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Isabel McSwain, Julia Allerd Smith and Sarah Jo Collier. The family will receive friends at their residence, 2897 Oldhams Rd., Oldhams, Va. on Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, January 5, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with burial in the Smith Family Cemetery at Oldhams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oncology Department, RGH, P.O. Box 1449, Kilmarnock, Va. 22482.

A memorial service for Joseph Termini will be held Saturday, January 6, 11 a.m. at St. Edward's Church on Huguenot Road.

THIERMANN
Phoebe Read Drewry Thiermann, 88, of Richmond, widow of Anton Hofer Thiermann Jr., died January 1, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Dr. William Francis Drewry and Bessie Seabury Drewry. She is survived by her son, Anton Hofer Thiermann III; daughter, Lelia Thiermann Taylor; two granddaughters, Laura and Anne Taylor; great-grandson, W. A. Drewry Taylor; also several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Thiermann was related to many of the old families of Virginia through the Drewry and Seabury families. She was a graduate of Westhampton College and attended Columbia University. She was a charter member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, member of the DAR, the Woman's Club, Westhampton Bridge Club which was formed in 1936 and met until 1999. She was a retired assistant librarian at the University of Richmond. Remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. Interment Hollywood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church.

THOMPSON
John Walton (Jack) Thompson, 91, died on December 31, 2000 at Westminster-Canterbury House, Richmond. He was born on January 15, 1909, in Surry County, Va., the son of John William Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Epps Thompson. He was preceded in death by a son, John Walton Thompson Jr.; a brother, William Epps Thompson; and a sister, Elizabeth Thompson Hamilton. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lottie Matthews Thompson of Westminster-Canterbury House; a daughter-in-law, Lilli Thompson Beyer of Richmond; a sister, Ruth Epps Jordan of Fort Defiance, Va.; a nephew, A. Thomas Hamilton Jr. of Richmond; and a niece, Joyce Thompson Nemitz of Henderson, N.C. Mr. Thompson was a prominent retail merchant, whose career in the furniture business spanned 75 years. He was associated with Thalhimer's, Miller & Rhoads, and Meinhard Furniture Co., and was the founder, in 1949, of Jack Thompson Furniture-Interiors. He was a 60-year member of Masonic Tuckahoe Lodge #347 AF&AM, a past member of the Exchange Club, a charter member of Westhampton Methodist Church, served on the Board of Trustees for the Hermitage Home for the Aged, and also on the Board of the United Methodist Family Service Center, formerly the Methodist Children's Home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Westminster-Canterbury House, 1600 Westbrook Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to Hermitage Methodist Home Benevolent Fund, Westminster-Canterbury Benevolent Fund or Westhampton Methodist Church.

TURPIN
Mrs. Leola Cephas Turpin, age 86, died on December 29, 2000 after a lengthy illness. She was the youngest of seven children born to Benjamin Addison and Fannie Dixon Cephas. A Richmond native, she was a graduate of Armstrong High School Class of 1930. Upon graduation from Virginia Union University, she taught in the Richmond Public School System until retirement. She was a charter member of the Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a charter member of the Richmond Chapter of Jack and Jill, and a longtime member of the Richmond Chapter of Girl Friends, Inc. Predeceased by her husband, Robert Augustus Turpin Sr., she is survived by three sons, Robert Augustus, Roland Lincoln and Kenneth Beverly Turpin; two daughters-in-law, LaVerne Buckner Turpin and Diane Ainsworth-Turpin; grandchildren, Marc Roland Turpin, Craig Cephas Turpin, Melloni Turpin-Harrell, Robert Augustus Turpin III, Guy Buckner Turpin, Kisha Beverly Turpin and Lauren Alea Turpin; great-grandchildren, Julian Andrew Davis, Collin Scott Harrell, Cameron Seth Harrell, Jade Alea Turpin and Robert Augustus Turpin IV; sister-in-law, Marietta Hall Cephas; godchild, Lola Vann McDowell; numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2001, and sacred memorial rites will be conducted at St. Philip's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2001. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be forwarded to St. Philip's Episcopal Church Building Fund.

WOOLRIDGE
Sylvester B. Woolridge Sr. of Richmond, departed this life Tuesday, January 2, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.
