Erla Ranson Brown, widow of Joseph Archer Brown, died Monday, July 23, 2001 at age 95. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Erla Brown Holloway and survived by her daughter, Bobbie Brown Yagel. Friends will be received tonight at Bliley Chippenham Chapel from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Graveside services for family and friends will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Hopewell United Methodist Church, 6200 Courthouse Rd. with a reception following.

CARY
Miss Janice Elizabeth Cary of Rosewood Ave. departed this life July 22, 2001. The staff of the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home is serving her family.

CHRISTIAN
Frank Ellsworth Christian Jr. of Williamsburg, Va., formerly of New Kent, Va., died July 25, 2001. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

Mrs. Esther H. Clark, of Richmond, departed this life Wednesday, July 25, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

GARDNER
Norman C. Gardner of Richmond, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Gardner; son, Tom Gardner; five daughters, Dorothy Gardner, Sandra Gardner and husband, Michael Peters, Norma Gardner and husband, Don McRorie, Bettie Plunkett and Pam Dyke and her husband, Sonny; two brothers, Donald Gardner and Delbert Gardner and his wife, Marilyn; sister, Ruth Stone; nine grandchildren, one great-grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday (today) at Lakeside United Methodist Church. Interment private. Mr. Gardner was a 50 year member of the Williamsport Blue Lodge, AF&AM, and a 25 year member of the ACCA Temple. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, 1800 Lakeside Ave., Richmond, Va. 23228 or Dumbarton Public Library, 6800 Staples Mill Rd., Richmond, Va. 23228.

GIVENS
Chester A. Givens, age 92, of Amelia, devoted husband of Alice Wood Givens for 62 years, entered into eternal life Sunday, July 22, 2001. He is also survived by his daughters, Mary Friend (George) of Richmond, Frances Brown (William), Alice Worsham (Frank), Addie Monroe (John), Nettie L. Givens and Jacqueline Booker (Frank); sons, Chester S. (Rosa), Walter D. and Tyrone C. Givens (Selena), all of Amelia; special niece, Nettie Keaton Wright of Akron, Ohio; 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Anna Givens of Richmond, Ada Johnson and Lillian Wood of Jersey City, N.J., Lucille Wood of Farmville and Beatrice Hunt of Greenbay; brother-in-law, Walter Wood of Farmville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services Saturday, July 28, 1 p.m., Zion Hill Presbyterian Church, Amelia C.H., with burial in the Albright Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements by V.Y. Scott Funeral Home, Hwy. 360 E., Amelia.

GORDON
William Talbott Gordon of Richmond, retired CEO of the Bank of Virginia (now First Union) and a WW II naval officer, died on July 24, 2001 at The Hermitage at Cedarfield. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eleanor Holladay Gordon; two daughters, Ellen Gordon Williams and Anne Gordon Wilson of Richmond; two sons, William Talbott Gordon Jr. of Purcellville and James Holladay Gordon of Fairfax; and a brother, Colonel Lawrence Gordon, USAF, Ret., of Punta Gorda, Florida. Survivors also include ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Gordon, a native of Richmond, was the son of Robert Latimer Gordon Sr. and Anne Moore Talbott. Mr. Gordon was educated at McGuire's School, the Episcopal High School, and the University of Virginia. He was a graduate of the Executive Program of the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. While serving in the Navy, he met and married Ensign Eleanor Stuart Holladay of Gordonsville. After the war, he resumed his banking career begun in 1936 as a bookkeeper at the Morris Plan Bank, which later became the Bank of Virginia. He became President and CEO of the Bank of Virginia, retiring after 42 years of service. He served as Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Virginia and was a member of the Board of the Bank of Virginia Company. Mr. Gordon was active in many civic, educational and social organizations. He lectured at the Federal Reserve Bank School for Examiners in Washington. Mr. Gordon served as President of the Virginia College Fund; Chairman of Virginia Industrial Development Corporation; a Director of the Central Richmond Association, the Better Business Bureau, the Richmond Urban League, the Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Metropolitan YMCA; a Trustee of the United Way of Greater Richmond; Treasurer of the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival; and on the Advisory Board of Mary Baldwin College. He was also a member of the Richmond German, the Forum Club, the Commonwealth Club, the Downtown Club and the Kiwanis Club. In banking activities Mr. Gordon was a director of Interbank Card (Master Card), President of Richmond Clearing House, a member of the Association of Reserve City Bankers and State Coordinator of the American Banking Association (ABA) Savings Bond Committee. Mr. Gordon was also responsible for developing a credit card operation, which has become Capitol One Financial Corporation, for the Bank of Virginia. Mr. Gordon was active at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Richmond and Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock, where he held several leadership positions. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Goochland a 4 p.m. on July 28. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cedarfield Samaritan Fund at The Hermitage at Cedarfield.

HAMAKER
Nannie Lee Stembridge Hamaker, 78, of Richmond, Va. claimed her promise of the Resurrection, July 24, 2001 at her home. She was born February 4, 1923 in Wylliesburg, Va. to Bessie Lee Moore and Silas Wilkie Stembridge. Nan graduated from Chase City High School and attended Longwood College. She worked as a secretary at the Pentagon for 10 years. Nan was a loving mother, caring neighbor, and faithful friend. She was active for many years in the Women of the Church at St. Giles Presbyterian Church and River Road United Methodist Church, as well as a member of the Guild of the Richmond Home for Ladies. Her parents and four brothers, Robert, Silas, Tom, and Bryant Stembridge, preceded her in death. Nan is survived by her husband of 49 years, Lyman Hamaker; four children, Barbara Doyal of Fredericksburg, Va., Stan Hamaker of Princeton, W.Va., Patricia Hamaker Mershon of Richmond, and Dorothy "Dottie" Hubbell of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; one sister, Valeria Rickman of Chase City, Va.; nine grandchildren, five nieces and three nephews. The family will receive friends at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., on Friday, July 27, 2001, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The committal service will be held at Westhampton Memorial Park Chapel Saturday, July 28 at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial celebration at River Road UMC at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to: Children's Hospital, 2924 Brook Rd., Richmond, Va. 23220-1298; Covenant Woods (formerly Richmond Home for Ladies), 7090 Covenant Woods Dr., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111; River Road United Methodist Church, 8800 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23229; Chase City Fire Dept., P. HENDERSON
Virginia M. Henderson, age 70, of Richmond, died Monday, July 23, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert L. Henderson; a son, Keith M. Henderson; a daughter, Kathy L. Henderson; her father, Walter E. Blackburn; four grandchildren, Zachary and James Henderson, Jodi Oaks and Alcinda Burchett; and a great-grandchild, Raven Woodward. Mrs. Henderson was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

HOBSON
Mrs. Lelia Marguerite Hitt Hobson, born August 18, 1917 in Elkton, Va., died on July 23, 2001 in Richmond. She was the widow of Aubrey Hobson and is survived by three nieces, Sandra Hitt, Rowena Moritz and Louise Belcher; three nephews, Robert, Richard, and David Hitt. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where family and friends may gather at 9 a.m. Saturday, then process to Riverview Cemetery for a 10 a.m. Saturday graveside service.

Nonda Lee Johnson Reed, 51, a local stained-glass artist and oil painter, has moved her body of work to a new studio. Tuesday, July 17, 2001 Nonda began her eternal apprenticeship in the heavens among Thee greatest artists of all time. Explaining this woman's inspiring life and battle with cancer cannot happen in one sentence, therefore the website www.nonda.com. Originally created to track her progress through chemo and her rise to artistic stardom, the site is now tracking her progress through the stars. Wishing her much success in her newfound ability to master all mediums are her friend and former husband of 30 years, Donald R. Reed; daughter, Stacy Lenore Reed; son, Steven Craig Reed; all of her American Johnson relatives and Australian Craig relatives, her friends and fellow artists, and her cats. Horace "Earl" Riley Jr., 73, of Richmond, died at St. Mary's Hospital July 13, 2001, after an extended illness. He was born in Wichita, Kansas on July 8, 1928. His father was Horace Earl Riley Sr. and his mother's maiden name was Laura Roath. Earl was retired from advertising and sales at U.S. Hospitality Company. A memorial service will be held at River Road United Methodist Church, where he was a member, on Friday, July 27, 2001, at 2 p.m.

SAMPSON
Fannie H. Sampson of 3300 Hazelhurst Ave., formerly of Kaine Rd., Short Pump, Va., died July 25, 2001. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Pk. Blvd. Funeral notice later.

SMITH
Ann Tyree Smith, age 80, of Topping, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Garland E. Smith Sr.; three daughters, Delores Sheeley of Mechanicsville, Sue Bennett Wingo of Roanoke, Barbara Staton of Topping; one son, Garland E. Smith Jr. of Madison; three sisters, Isabel Robertson of Swope, Juanita Andrews of Lynchburg, Nellie Weaver of Greenville; two brothers, Herman Tyree of Buena Vista, Earley Tyree of Lexington; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001 in Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda. Interment Middlesex Memorial Cemetery, Urbanna. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

TALMADGE
Ruth North Talmadge, 79, of Midlothian, died July 24, 2001. She is survived by her children, James E. Talmadge of Omaha, Neb., Alice A. Talmadge and Timothy N. Talmadge of Richmond; five grandchildren, Virginia Louise Talmadge, Cody Tyler Talmadge and Kelsey Linn Talmadge, all of Richmond, and James Edward Talmadge II and Joshua Eliot Talmadge of Omaha, Neb.; and one brother, John North of Vail, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey G. Talmadge Jr. Mrs. Talmadge was a teacher, poet, matriarch, volunteer and friend. After receiving her degree in elementary education from the University of Northern Iowa, she taught for 20 years in schools in Tennessee, Iowa and Maryland. Her first teaching assignment was in a one-room schoolhouse in Sunset Gap, Tennessee. Selections of her poetry have been published by the National Poets Society. She was an active member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, Midlothian Senior Citizens, American Association of Retired Persons and the Chesterfield Volunteer Association. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church in Midlothian. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Chesterfield Volunteer Association, P.O. Box 900, Chester, Va. 23831, so that Mrs. Talmadge's volunteer work can continue.
