PETERS
Sanford J. "Pete" Peters, 71, passed away Thurday, June 14, 2001 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was retired from Reynolds Metals and served in the U.S. Navy. Earlier he was employed with the Norfolk & Western Railroad in Roanoke, Va. He was the son of the late Henry J. and Nellie B. Peters of Rocky Mount, Va. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Peters; and their children, Tom Peters and his wife, Suzanne of Ladysmith, Va., Sandra Campbell of Ashland, Va. and Michael Peters and his wife, Kathy of Midlothian; also two grandchildren, Tommy Barber and Megan Barber; two stepgrandsons, Taylor and Justin Payne; his sisters, Ethelda Milask of Boca Raton, Fla., Bonnie Walker of Rocky Mount, Va.; and brother, Winfred Peters of Roanoke, Va. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Shirley and Otey Peters. The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. on Friday, June 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 16, 2 p.m., at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 7500 Hull Street Rd. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southminster Presbyterian Church.

PURCELL
Mary Bialkowski Purcell of Richmond passed away Thursday, June 14, 2001. She was the widow of Joseph Edward Purcell Sr. She is survived by two children and their spouses, Joseph E. Purcell Jr. and his wife, Judy, Patricia A. Purcell and her husband, Rodd Wilken; three grandchildren, T. Nichole P.C. Bahen and her husband, Matt Bahen, Joseph E. Purcell III and Erica Purcell; one brother, A.G. Bialkowski Jr. Family will receive friends at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., on Sunday, June 17, 2001, from 4 to 6 p.m. with a Rosary being said at 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held 1 p.m. Monday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, Va. 23226.

QUAIFF
Frank W. "Billy" Quaiff, 81, of Richmond, died June 15, 2001. Mr. Quaiff served in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge. He was retired from Virginia Power with 40 years of service. He was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church for 65 years, where he served as treasurer, chairman of Building and Grounds and a member of the Board of Stewards. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #161, served as a registrar with the Dale District, and worked with the Bensley Rescue Squad for ten years, serving three years as president. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Lois Chisholm Quaiff; son and daughter-in-law, Denny and Lois Quaiff; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Pat Taylor; granddaughters, Suzanne "Dee Dee" Quaiff, Heather and Kelly Taylor; brother and sister-in-law, Dickie and Joyce Quaiff; sister, Frances Q. Cole; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Quaiff, all of Chesterfield; brother-in-law, Truman Burton; niece and her husband, Becky and Bob Holland, all of Long Beach, Calif.; and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles R. Quaiff Sr. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Beulah United Methodist Church. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Beulah United Methodist Church, 6930 Hopkins Rd., Richmond, Va. 23237.

REED
Peggy Lee Fitzgerald, 68, formerly of Staunton, died June 15, 2001. She is survived by three children, Bruce Reed, Mark Reed, and Natalie Reed Mullen; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at New Bridge Church on June 18 at 10 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad or Hospice of Central Virginia.

REIF
Philip Reif Jr., age 81, of Green Bay, went to meet his Lord on Thursday, June 14, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Joan S. Reif of Franklinville, N.J.; two daughters, Lori "Taffy" Overstreet-Hudnall of Evington, Va. and Susan Shover of Texas; a son, Glenn Reif (Aldon Randolph Gilbert) of Franklinville, N.J.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Mr. Reif was retired from the New Jersey State Parks, Forestry Division and a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran WWII with service in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Crewe VFW Post No. 7819. Funeral services will be held 5 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2001 at the Victoria United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ann Norton officiating. Interment will be in the Quantico National Cemetery with full military Honors, Monday 12 noon, June 17, 2001. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by the Jennings McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe, Va., 434-645-7310.

SLAUGHTER
Elizabeth Lynch Slaughter, 82, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2001, following an extended illness. She was the widow of Bobby J. Slaughter, and is survived by her sister, Jessie L. Cook; other devoted family and friends. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends Sunday 5 to 7 p.m. and where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

SOUTHERLAND
Departed this life June 15, 2001, Mr. Irving J. Southerland of 909 N. 35th St. Remains rest at the Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" St. Services to be announced.

THOMPSON
Eddie B. Thompson Jr. of 706 Bancroft Ave. died June 14, 2001. Remains rest at the Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Pk. Blvd. Funeral notice later.

THOMSON
Mary M. Thomson of Richmond died Wednesday, June 13, 2001. She was the widow of G.W. Scott Thomson. She is survived by her son, Scottie Thomson; two daughters, Mary Ann Waleski and Sharon Bourne; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Private services were held Friday, June 15, 2001.

TYLER
Inie Lowry Tyler, 100, of Richmond, widow of John W. Tyler, died Thursday, June 14, 2001. She is survived by two nephews, Raymond E. Young and Robert I. Young and his wife, Gail; two great-nephews, John M. Young and Keith L. Young and his wife Sherry and son, Joshua; and her devoted companion and caregiver, Annie L. Randolph, all of Richmond. Mrs. Tyler was a longtime member of Bethany Place Baptist Church, where she served as pianist for many years. In her later years, she delighted in playing piano for senior citizens groups at Oak Grove Baptist Church and the Globetrotters of Friendship Baptist Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday. Interment private.

VALAINIS
Joseph Valainis, native of Latvia, died Thursday, June 14, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne M. Valainis; his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Gregory T. and Phyllis K. Valainis of Spartansburg, S.C.; four grandchildren, Lauren M., Gregthomas, Harrison J. and William J. Valainis; two sisters, Veronika Kutlets of San Diego, Calif., Monika Valainis, Portland, Ore.; also several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the staff at Comfort Care Home for their care and dedication. Mr. Valainis attended the University of Riga in Latvia and was employed with the MCV Pharmacy until his retirment. Remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where a Christain Wake service will be held Sunday 7:30 p.m. and visitation to follow until 9 p.m. The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11 a.m. Monday from St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 300 N. Sheppard St. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Benedict's Catholic Church Renovation Fund.

WOODS
Marian (Eley) Woods, 85, of Hanover County, widow of E.C.C. Woods, passed Friday, June 15, 2001. Mrs. Woods was very active in Hanover County. Some of her accomplishments and duties included being a rural mail carrier, a dispatcher for the sheriff's department, and Secretary to the Hanover County Sheriff. She worked on the county budget and was thought to be the first woman deputy in Hanover County. She retired from Hanover County with 25 years of service. After her retirement, she started her own catering business, where she was known near and far for her "Mrs. Eley's rolls". She was an accomplished gardener and even after her illness, she never became tired of baking. She is survived by two daughters, Naomi Palmquist and Ruth Zartman; one stepdaughter, two stepsons, three brothers, one sister; her beloved granddaughter, Gayle Hunter; five other grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Remains rest at Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 and Shady Grove Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park.

WRIGHT
Martha E. Wright, age 76, of Richmond, died Thursday, June 14, 2001. She is survived by four sisters, Lillie W. Bryant, Geneva W. Kitchens, Alice W. Ross, all of Virginia Beach, Irene W. Luck of Richmond; one brother, Thomas C. Wright Sr. of Studley; also several nieces and nephews. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and where services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 5540 Falmouth St., Richmond, Va. 23226.

ACREE
Albert Thomas "Buddy" Acree, age 83, died March 16, 2001. He is survived by a daughter, Grace A. Wright of Emporia; three sisters, Maybell Jones of Brodnax, Mabel Mosley of Florida, Magalene McIntyre of New York; a brother, Herman Acree of Hopewell; two grandchildren, Wendy Wright and her friend, Mike Sherrin, Randy Wright and wife, Donna. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight (Saturday) in the Echols Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

ARRITT
Tammy Lynn Arritt of Richmond died Wednesday, March 14, 2001. She is survived by her parents, John and Thelma Arritt; brother, Sean William Arritt; and sister, Jennifer Leigh Arritt. Her remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (today), the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mechanicsville Chapel, 8005 Atlee Rd. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Animal Hospital, 2412 N. Lombardy St., Richmond, Va. 23220.

BISHOP
Marguerite Irene Bishop, 95, of Richmond, formerly of Newton, N.J., widow of Elbert W. Bishop, died Thursday, March 15, 2001. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Carol Bishop of Powhatan; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Goeffrey Robbins of Newton, N.J.; also six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted at Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Heritage Oaks Chapel Fund, 1100 German School Rd., Richmond, Va. 23225.

BURRELL
Charles Everett Burrell of Lanexa, Va. departed this life March 14, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Elsie; daughter, Felicia; five sons, Lamont, Christopher, James, Sol and Noel; mother, Dulcenia Burrell; five sisters, Mildred, Cherri, Mona, and Charmaine and their husbands, and Eunice; two brothers, Ronald, Donald, and their wives; six grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, two sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, father-in-law, five aunts, two uncles, a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at J. Leroy Charity Funeral Home, Charles City, where family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Services 3 p.m. Sunday at New Elam Baptist Church, New Kent. Interment church cemetery.
