KERSULIS
Jean Temple Kersulis, 74, of Richmond, died July 23, 2001, at Henrico Doctors' Hospital. She was born on May 14, 1927, to Leta O. and Arthur R. Temple of Champaign, Ill., and was a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Education, with a master's degree from the University of Virginia. For more than 30 years she was an elementary school teacher in Champaign, St. Paul, Minn., Louisville and Richmond/Henrico Co. She was also a resource teacher and for more than two decades, she'd been an elementary school supervisor for the Henrico County School system. She retired in 1990. She was the widow of Walter T. Slip Kersulis of East St. Louis, Ill., a collegiate basketball and football stand-out at Illinois who went on to play professional basketball for Billy Reynolds' St. Paul Lights. He later joined Reynolds Metals in Louisville and was head of data processing for Reynolds in Richmond at the time of his death. She was a charter member of the Mu Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa International Education Honorary Society, a member of Delta Gamma Social Sorority, and a volunteer for the Leukemia Society. In recent years she was a partner for the Temple Farm, Tolono, Ill., with her sister, Virginia Temple Lawler, Raleigh, N.C. who survives. Other survivors include two nieces, Robin Lawler, Davidson, N.C. and Gayle Kersulis Wright, Ramona, Calif.; a nephew, Brian A. Lawler, Silver Spring, Md., and his wife; other relatives and a host of loving, loyal friends. The funeral service will be at noon, Wednesday, at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an organization of the donor's choice. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana, Ill., at a later date.

KYLE
Master Chief Clarence T. Kyle (USN, Ret. after 30 years of service) departed this life July 17, 2001. He is now resting in peace. Mr. Kyle was preceded in death by his brother, Roy Kyle. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Mays; four children, Clarence Jr., David, Laurie and Jennifer; ex-wife, Cynthia; brother, David; three sisters, Jewel Polhill, LaTanya Williams and Janet Hendricks; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, one daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law. Remains rest at the Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" St.. where the family will receive friends Wednesday, July 25, 7 to 8 p.m. and where funeral services will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m. Interment Quantico National Cemetery.

LaCHANCE
Thelma J. LaChance, 66, of Richmond, departed this life Sunday, July 22, 2001. She is survived by her sisters, Marjorie Barker, Catherine Mullenax, Peggy Jordan, Dorothy Lee Castlebury; a brother, Joseph Jordan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

MARION
Nicole Brooke Marion, 14, of Dunnsville, departed this life Sunday, July 22, 2001. She was a graduate of Essex Intermediate School. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Calvert Delano and Lewis Marion. She is survived by her parents, Jerry and Sandra Marion; her brother, Christopher; her paternal grandmother, Jean Marion of Dunnsville; her maternal grandmother, Polly Delano of Howertons; her aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Terrance Neist and Mr. and Mrs. John Weiss, all of Howertons, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne King of Haynesville, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Delano of Loretto, Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Delano of Dunnsville, Rodney Delano of Howertons, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Allen of Richmond and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Marion of Saluda; her cousins, Lindsay Neist, Stacey Weiss, Chris and Shannon Shea, Archie King, Jessie King, Bradley King, Casey Delano, Beth Rawls, Brandon Delano, Joseph Delano, Billie Joe Delano, Ashley Delano, Jamie Allen, Meg and Buddy Terry and K. D. and Rachel Delano; her great-uncles and aunts, Mrs. and Mrs. Dean Delano of Warsaw, Mr and Mrs. Joseph Boughan of Newport News, Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Seargent of Appomattox and Mrs. Edwin (Aleia) Delano of Texas. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Interment Howertons Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tapphannock or Richmond County Rescue Squads. A special thanks to Richmond County Rescue Squad.

ORCUTT
Erma Brown Orcutt, 88, of Colonial Heights, died on Monday, July 23, 2001. She was born April 1, 1913 in Lunenburg Co., Va. to Richard Lawrence and Lula Crafton Tucker. She was the widow of Charles W. Orcutt. She was a member of Highland United Methodist Church and participated in all phases of the life of the church. During her years of service she was a member of the administrative board, worship, missions, kitchen and education committees. She was a past president of the Mary Murphy Bible Class, past president of the United Methodist Women, past president of the Joy Club and member of the senior bell choir. She is survived by a daughter, Alice Brown Nelson and her husband, Rev. Ben Nelson of Fairfax, Va.; four grandsons, Mark, Jonathan, David and Lee Nelson of Fairfax; a stepson, Calvin Orcutt and wife, Polly; a stepdaughter, Joyce Learnard and husband, Ralph; a stepdaughter-in-law, Martha Orcutt; 11 stepgrandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and devoted nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be Thursday, July 26, 2001 at 11 a.m. in Highland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Dennis Lipke, Rev. William Rawling and Rev. Ben Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, South Hill, at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. Memorial contributions may be made to Highland United Methodist Church, Colonial Heights.

PHILLIPS
Mrs. Ruth Shores Phillips, age 87, of Blackstone, Va., died Saturday, July 21, 2001. She was a native of Newport News and was preceded in death by her husband, Zolton J. Phillips II. She is survived by a son, The Reverend Zolton Phillips III and his wife, Sue of Blackstone; a grandson, Zoltan J. Phillips IV of Richmond; a granddaughter, Karen Sue Ward of Florida; and two great-granddaughters. Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Naomi Chapter of the O.E.S. and the Blackstone Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will be held 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at the Blackstone Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the residence, 500 8th St., Blackstone, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to "The Memorial Fund" of the Blackstone Presbyterian Church, 301 Church St., Blackstone, Va. 23824.

POWELL
Julia Whitlow (Sis) Powell, of Richmond and Lottsburg, Va., died Saturday, July 21, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry W. (Tump) Powell and is survived by her son, Harry E. (Pookie) Powell; two grandchildren, Troy E. Powell, Julie R. Powell; two great-grandchildren, Elisha, Kathryn Powell; and two stepgrandchildren, Hope and Kirk. Her family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Goochland, Virginia.

Robert Coleman Ray, 64, of Mechanicsville, passed away Monday, July 23, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Jean; three daughters, Charlotte Gooch, Donna Parker, Melinda England; three granddaughters, Jana Dunnavant, Jennifer Gooch, Angeline Davis; one son-in-law, Mike Parker; three beloved cousins, Ralph Poe of Atlantic Beach, N.C., Rick O'Connell and Joe Donat of Daytona Beach, Fla. Mr. Ray was a retired electrician for Reynolds Metals South Plant. A wake will be held Thursday, July 26, 2001, from 6 to 9 p.m. at K.L. Jordan Funeral Services, 5008 Nine Mile Rd. SALE
Jennie May Scott Sale, 100, died Saturday, July 21, 2001. She was the widow of Raymond Scott Sr. and John M. Sale. She is survived by her son, Raymond Scott and his wife, Jane Shaw Scott; her Scott grandchildren, Elizabeth Lux of Richmond, Jane Keith Casper of Virginia Beach, and Kerry Hulcher of Woodbridge, Conn.; her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Martin, Greg and Bryan Hulcher; and one great-great-grandchild, Katarina Martin. Mrs. Sale is also survived by a stepson, John Sale; and a stepdaughter, Barbara Wright. She had been a longtime member of St. Benedict's Church when living in Richmond, and the Church of the Visitation while at her retirement home in Wake, Va. Her devotion to her church, family and many friends will long be remembered. The family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., with a recitation of the Rosary at 5 p.m. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Riverview Cemetery. SANDERS
Marilyn E. Sanders, 41, of Richmond, passed away Friday, July 20, 2001. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Woodrow and Mildred Sanders, and brother, Vernon Sanders. She is survived by four sisters, Sue Ellen Sanders, Nanalou Rock and family, Jennifer Johnson and family and Sherry Hershey and family; one brother, Woodrow Sanders Jr. and family; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dale Memorial Park.

SCHWIER
Ollie Jett Schwier, 95, of Reedville, died July 22, 2001. Surviving are a daughter, Mildred S. Rogers; a son, Robert J. Schwier, both of Reedville; sister, Beulah J. Dawson, Kilmarnock; brother, William O. Jett, of Reedville. Funeral services 3 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfields United Methodist Church, Burgess. Interment Roseland Cemetery, Reedville. SHIPES
James Colin Shipes, age 58, of Shipman, died Friday night, July 20, 2001, at his residence. Born February 13, 1943, at Chester, Pa., he was a son of the late James C. Shipes Sr. and Marquerite Bethune Shipes Mills. He was a retired consultant engineer with the Lanna Dulap & Spriggs Co. of Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Margie Gowen Shipes; a daughter, Sandra L. Davis of Richmond; and two sons, Eric Shipes of Fredericksburg and James C. Kirkland of Navarre, Fla.; two sisters, Lorraine L. Arnett of Quinton and Carol Ann Lynch of Gilbertsville, Ky.; two brothers, Glenn Shipes of Richmond and Eugene Shipes of Mechanicsville; a half brother, Wayne Allen Mills of Richmond; and four grandchildren, Jesse Scott Kirkland, Camryn Davis, Jenny Davis and Ariane Shipes. A memorial service will be held today at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Robert Massie officiating and the family will receive friends following the service. SHOWNS
John William Showns Jr., a native of Mount Jackson, Va., and a resident of Disputanta, died Sunday, July 22, 2001 at the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond. He was the son of the late John William Sr. and Evelyn Mae Campbell Showns. Mr. Showns was a member of the Grace Baptist Church and retired from Allied Signal with over 29 years as a boiler technician. He also served in the Army for 15 years, with two tours in Korea. Mr. Showns is survived by his wife, Audrey Harding Showns; three sons, Steven Showns, Gregory Showns, both of Disputanta, and John W. Showns III of Okinawa, Japan; daughters, Rosemary Quiros of Panama, Shirley Carrico of Oklahoma and Jenette Showns of California; a special grandson, Stevie Showns and eight other grandchildren; sisters, Welda Baker of Mount Jackson and Anise Booth of Buchanan. A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 in the chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, with the Rev. Raleigh Nunnally officiating. Interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park in Prince George. The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made to the Grace Baptist Church, 23814 River Rd., Petersburg or McGuire VA Medical Center Hospice Unit, 1201 Broad Rock Blvd., Richmond.

Nadine Scott Soloman, age 47, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Richmond, Va., died July 14, 2001. Survived by husband, Howard Solomon; daughters, Lauren and Emily; parents, Lois and David Goode of Richmond. Formerly Head Nurse of Progressive Care Unit at Stuart Circle Hospital, most recently employed at Borland Grover Clinic in Jacksonville. Memorial service Thursday, July 26, 11 a.m., St. John's Episcopal Church, 2401 E. Broad Street, Richmond, Va. Covered dish reception in church parish hall following. Frances Carroll Speir, a longtime resident of Richmond, passed away at the home of her granddaughter in Charleston, W.Va. on Sunday, July 22, 2001 after a long illness. Funeral notice later.

STEVENS
Dorothy D. Stevens, of Richmond, died Sunday, July 22, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Gordon Stevens; a daughter and her family, Sharon, Ralph and Sara Small; two sisters and six brothers. Mrs. Stevens was a member of Seventh Street Christian Church. Her family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Westhampton Memorial Park.
