J. "Clayton" Boaz
The funeral for James "Clayton" Boaz, 85, of Stuart and formerly of Bassett, who died Dec. 27, 2005, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bassett Funeral Service chapel in Bassett. The Revs. Dwayne Pruitt and Jim Churchwell will officiate.
Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral Friday.
He was born in Patrick County on Jan. 3, 1919, to William Boaz and Minnie Frye Boaz. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
He served in the Army during World War II. A longtime businessman, he formerly owned and operated The Enterprise newspaper and the Coffee Break Restaurant in Stuart. He also owned other businesses in the Stuart area. In the 1970s, Boaz served as the mayor of Stuart.
Surviving are a son, James Boaz of Penhook; and a grandson, Alex Finney Boaz of Bassett.
Memorials may be made to the People's Church of the Living God Building Fund, P.O. Box 590, Bassett, Va. 24055.

Robert C. Boaz
The funeral for Robert Clyde "Buck" Boaz, 89, of Richmond and formerly of Stuart, who died Dec. 24, 2005, was held Wednesday at the Stuart United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Clyde DeLoach officiating. Burial was in the Stuart Cemetery.
A flag presentation was made by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard and Masonic rites were given by Mountain Home Lodge No. 263.
Members of the lodge also served as pallbearers.
Moody Funeral Home in Stuart was in charge of arrangements.

John A. Hairston Jr.
A graveside service for John Andrew Hairston Jr., 77, of 1607 Spruce, St., Martinsville, who died Dec. 28, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Cemetery with the Rev. Eugene Reynolds officiating.
Friends will be received at the home of his sister, Mary Jamison, 205 Southland Drive, Martinsville.
He was born in Martinsville on Oct. 28, 1928, to John Andrew Hairston Sr. and Frances Scott Hairston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Ziglar Hairston.
Surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Clark of Richmond and Mary Jamison of Martinsville; and a brother, Clarence W. Hairston of Martinsville.
Hines Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Christopher B. Jones
Christopher Bernard Jones, 58, of 805 Forest Lake Drive, Martinsville, died Dec. 27, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Martinsville on June 7, 1947, to Helen Waller Jones of Fieldale and Stafford Lee Jones. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Katina Penn.
He was a veteran of the Army and worked at Drake Extrusion Corp. for 10 years before becoming disabled.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Janet Barbour Jones of the home; three daughters, Shelby Estes and Coletha Penn, both of Forestville, Md. and Pam McLaughlin of Martinsville; a son, Christopher L. Jones of Jarrett; four sisters, Brenda Brooks of Martinsville, Donna Spencer and Sharlene Hampton, both of Fieldale and Lisa Hird of Martinsville; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pentecostal Assembly Building with the Rev. Benjamin Redd officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends for one hour before the funeral and other times at the home.
Hines Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Robert F. Kerrick
A funeral for Robert "Bob" Fremont Kerrick, 63, of Martinsville, who died Dec. 26, 2005, was held Wednesday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Ramsey and Minister Lawrence Harris officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Church Cemetery in Penhook.
Pallbearers were William Smith, Doug Barnes, Robbie Watkins, William Powell, Travis Powell, Ken Engle, Allan Willie, Earl Utt and Olaf G. Hurd Jr.
Norris Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Lemons
EDEN, N.C. -- Frank "Arvin" Lemons, 81, of 241 E. Aiken Road, died Dec. 28, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Spray to Frank Lemons and Lillie Gatewood Lemons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lou Cox Lemons; and a sister, Nelva DiMatteo.
He retired as owner of Arvin's Tile Company and was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.
Surviving are two sons, John Frank Lemons and Arvin Van Lemons, both of Eden; a sister, Vivian Cruise of Eden; two brothers, Zendale Lemons and Hubbie Lemons, both of Eden; three grandchildren; a several nieces and nephews; and other relatives in Henry County, Va.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Fair Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 211 N. Oakland Ave., Eden, N.C. 27288.

Novella F. Mills
A graveside service for Novella Francis Mills, 67, of 1417 Cardinal Lane, Martinsville, who died Dec. 26, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Henry Memorial Park in Bassett with Kelvin Muhammed officiating.
Visitation will be held today at the home.
She was born in Martinsville on Aug. 24, 1938, to Lorenzo Mills and Gertrude Perkins Mills. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Hairston.
She retired from Centel Telephone Company and was a volunteer for the Red Cross. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of East Martinsville.
Surviving are a son, Lynn Muhammed of Henry County; a granddaughter; a grandson; a brother, Lorenzo Mills of San Bernandino, Calif.; two sisters, Norma Jean Gebo of San Bernandino and Sharon B. Price of Martinsville; and a great-granddaughter.
Hairston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mae W. Shelton
Mae Williams Shelton, 84, of Patrick Springs, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Patrick County on June 17, 1921, to Robert Lee Williams and Maggie Purdy Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clivie Eugene "Gene" Shelton; two sisters, Dessie Martin and Pearl Williams; and two brothers, Frank Williams and Daniel Williams.
She retired as a CNA from the Blue Ridge Nursing Center and was a member of Liberty Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Ann Justice of Patrick Springs; a son, Michael Shelton of Patrick Springs; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Linwood "Bill" Williams of Patrick Springs.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty Primitive Baptist Church with Elder John Wingfield officiating. Burial will be in the Shelton-Branham Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m today at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Primitive Baptist Church, 1131 Five Forks Road, Stuart, Va. 24171.

Irene G. Slaydon
Irene Fair Grogan Slaydon, 99, of 507 Forest St., Martinsville, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Rockingham County on Dec. 23, 1906, to James Lincoln Grogan and Ida Cayton Grogan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Herman Slaydon; three sisters, Mamie Bivins, Alice Caudell and Mattie Wilson; and two brothers, James B. Grogan and J. Lincoln Grogan.
She was a charter member of the Church of Christ in Collinsville where taught Sunday school. She was a current member of Oak Level Church of Christ.
Surviving are three daughters, Georgia Clear of Pittsburgh, Norma Carter of Elkin, N.C. and Jo Barnes of Ridgeway; a sister, Ora Ratcliff of Martinsville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services with Ministers Ron Urley and David Epler officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
Friends will be received for one hour before the funeral Friday and other times at the home.
