EDWARDS
Cornelius Carlin Edwards, 94, of Orange and Ivy, Virginia, died August 2, 2002 at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. He was born August 11, 1907 in Culpeper County, Virginia, the son of the late Cornelius Jackson Edwards and Adelaide Highlander Edwards. He is survived by two daughters, Cornelia Edwards Craun and husband, Ray of Orange, Va., and Janice Edwards Stargell and husband, Jimmy of Ivy, Va.; five grandchildren, Phyllis Craun-Selka and husband, Dan of Tanzania, Africa, Douglas Craun and wife, Lori of Fairfax, Va., Carlin Stargell Camp Leggett and husband, Bill of Free Union, Va., Kevin Stargell and wife, Jessica of Richmond, Va., and James Stargell and fiancee, Lucretia Finlay of Omaha, Neb.; seven great-grandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Clara Kilby Edwards; one son, Carlin Eugene Edwards; two brothers, W. Whitney Edwards, and Milton J. Edwards; three sisters, Blanche Edwards Highlander, Mary Edwards Bywaters, and Clara Edwards Beard. He was a member of the Orange Baptist Church and a retired gasoline truck driver with the Virginia Department of Transportation. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Orange Baptist Church, with Dr. Stanley Johnson officiating. Pallbearers are Cecil Pasini, Ralph Kilby, Pattie Hamner Hellmann, Gary Beach, Thomas Ross, John Amos, Brian West, and Thomas Bennett. Honorary pallbearers are Eugene Wagner, Melvin Amos, G.I. Johnson, Silas W. Barnes Jr., and Charles Schoolcraft. Interment will be held in the Graham Cemetery, Orange, Va. The family will receive friends immediately after the funeral service in the Pine Room at the Orange Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Orange Baptist Church General Fund, P.O. Box 167, Orange, Va. 22960, or the Oakland Baptist Church, Richardsville, Va. 22736. The Preddy Funeral Home of Orange in charge of arrangements.

GREGORY
Charles Edward Gregory Sr., age 87, died Thursday, August 1, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie W. Gregory; and two sons, Charles E. Gregory Jr. and Edward L. Gregory. Mr. Gregory was retired from Citizens Home Insurance Co., a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, and a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Jack Rohrer of Ohio; two sons, Garland N. (Pete) Gregory and his wife, Joyce of Manakin, and Richard E. Gregory of Richmond; one daughter-in-law, Annie Mae Gregory of Richmond; one sister, Mary Gregory of Richmond; one brother, R. Ernest Gregory of Sandy Hook; 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2002, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad or to your favorite charity.

A memorial service for Jean Stratton Anderson Ham, who died July 21, 2002, will be held on Tuesday, August 6 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Hermitage Home, 1600 Westwood Ave.

HAYNES
Lonnie Ragland Haynes, 75, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Glen Allen, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, August 2, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife, Gerry E. Haynes; two daughters and their husbands, Mary (Cathy) and Luis Paniagua, Brenda and Craig Griffith; stepdaughter and husband, Debbie and Dennis Weaver; sister, Mary S. Ruess; and family members; and best friends, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor of Mechanicsville. The family will receive friends Sunday, 3 to 6 p.m. and Monday, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Funeral services Tuesday, 11 a.m. Interment Forest Lawn.

HEILMAN
Nancy J. Heilman, age 66, of The Hermitage at Cedarfield, passed away into eternal life on Friday, August 2, 2002. Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Heilman; daughter, Suzanne Heilman Poe and her husband, Lane Houghton Poe; loving granddaughters, Wendy Elizabeth Poe, Ellen Wesley Poe; and sisters, Janet Stuchal and Marjorie Renneisen. Family and friends will gather 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. and proceed to Greenwood Memorial Gardens at 11:30 a.m. for a 12 noon graveside service. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at The Hermitage at Cedarfield, followed by an Ice Cream Social. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maymont Foundation.

HEMBREE
Evelyn Y. Hembree, previously of Richmond, Va., passed away August 1, 2002. She is survived by her son, Bryan Hembree; parents, Maggie and Bill Yancey; brother, OB Yancey III; and sister, Kathy Lee. Memorial services to be held August 10, 2002, 11 a.m. at Emmaus Baptist Church, Quinton, Va. Pastor Valerie King to officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Emmaus Baptist Church Building Fund.

HOTCHKISS
Grace Ellsworth Hotchkiss, 82, died August 3, 2002 in Suffolk. Born in Southampton County, she was the daughter of the late Walter F. and Mary Rollins Ellsworth, and was the widow of Robert J. Hotchkiss. Mrs. Hotchkiss was a retired postal employee with the Sedley Post Office and was chosen Citizen of the Year by the Sedley Ruritan Club for 2001. She was a member of the Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and a member of Grace Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Madelyn H. Stainback and her husband, George of Abingdon, Va., Rebecca H. Lee and her husband, Don of Courtland, Anita H. Cotton and her husband, Bobby of Coinjock, N.C.; one son, Edward A. Hotchkiss of Franklin; nine grandchildren, Katharine Britt, Amy Wilkinson, Dr. Andrew Stainback, Michelle Weist, Vicki Fitzgerald, Holly Fowler, Andrea Stone, Allison Cotton, and Sam Cotton; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Wallace Ellsworth. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, August 5, in Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, Sedley, with Rev. Elizabeth V. Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, and suggest that memorials be made to Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 73, Sedley, Va. 23878, or Sedley Volunteer Fire Department, 18080 Johnsons Mill Road, Sedley, Va. 23878.

Mary Lou Inge, 95, of the Richmond area, died August 2, 2002. She was the widow of George Braxton Inge, and the daughter of the late Thomas Vance and Essie Catherine James Rivenbark. She was a retired owner of Deluxe Market, Hopewell. She is survived by her daughter, Mildred Louise "Mickie" Ground and husband, Ed of Paris, Texas; a son, George Thomas Inge and wife, Hazel of Hopewell; three grandchildren, Carmen Inge Wilson and husband, Charles of Mechanicsville, Mark Andrew Ground and wife, Rhonda of Paris, Texas, and Leslie Ground Harris and husband, Craig of Mexia, Texas; a great-grandson, Braxton Matthew Harris of Mexia, Texas; twin sisters, Adelle Rivenbark Smith and Fay Rivenbark Brown and husband, Kay; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 6, in Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home at 12 noon, with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 11 a.m. until time of the service. Verda Dowdy Neely, age 98, of Richmond, died Friday, August 2, 2002. She was the widow of Russell E. Neely and is survived by two sisters, Ratia Hicks and Lillian Steep of Lewisburg, W.Va.; also several nieces and nephews. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. NEWMAN
Ralph Belton Newman Jr., 50, of Holly Springs, N.C., died Thursday, August 1, 2002. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 5, 2002 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary, N.C. Surviving are his wife, Carol Zeissler Newman of the home; his mother, Doris Whitten of Chase City, Va.; three daughters, Velvet Lynn Newman, Crystal Newman, Ivy Newman; and two grandchildren, Benjamin Gage and Donna Reine. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Belton Newman Sr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 S. Boylan Ave., Raleigh, N.C. 27603. NEWTON
Charlene Barefield Newton, born October 24, 1934, passed away July 30, 2002 after a valiant two-year battle against leukemia. Ms. Newton is survived by two sons and their wives and a daughter and her husband, Dr. David E. Newton, Mary Jo and their children, Ashley Page and Daniel Emory, Mr. Philip R. Newton, Janet Burton and their twins, Andrew Lee and Paige Elizabeth, Mrs. Elizabeth P.N. Andrews, T. Ritchie, and their daughter, Shannon Elizabeth, all of Richmond. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Eugenia P. Glass; and a sister, Mrs. Lucy B. Power and her husband, Ray C., all of Albany, Ga. She is predeceased by her father, Mr. Emory Harrison Barefield; and her infant brother, Emory Harrison Barefield Jr. Ms. Newton was a devout Christian lady who was a member of Skipwith Baptist Church in Richmond and recently of Culpeper Baptist Church in Culpeper, Va. A memorial service will be led by Drs. Tom Miller and Paul Lee at Skipwith Baptist Church, 1900 Skipwith Rd., on Sunday, August 4 at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Skipwith Baptist Church Endowment Fund in Ms. Newton's memory.

NISWANDER
Virginia P. Niswander, 87, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 2, 2002. She was the widow of Ted S. Niswander Jr., and is survived by her daughters, Anna Belle Thomas and Jewel Davis; sister, Frances Ogden; brother, Robert C. Painter Sr.; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Niswander was a retiree of Cokesbury Book Store with more than 20 years of service. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park. POLLARD
Mrs. Imogene Gibson Pollard, 91, of Newport News, died on August 2, 2002 in Richmond. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters and is survived by her husband, Wendell (Snub) Pollard; son, Wendell Pollard Jr.; daughter, Betty Ryland Pollard; two sisters, Ellen Loving and Virginia Crowder; brother, Mason Gibson; two grandsons, Thomas O. and Jonathan C. Pollard; and one great-grandson, Christopher T. Pollard. Mrs. Pollard was born in Goochland, Va., grew up in Columbia, Va., and after her marriage to Snub, moved to Richmond and Newport News. She was an active member at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newport News for over 20 years. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, and where funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday. Interment to follow in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lakewood Manor in Richmond, St.John's Episcopal in Columbia, or St. Stephen's Episcopal in Newport News.

Harold Walker Powell, 77, of Mechanicsville, died Friday, August 2, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Edna Robbins Powell; a son, David H. Powell and his wife, Linda of Fredericksburg; a daughter, Sandra P. Carden of Mechanicsville; a sister, Kathryn P. Wood of Mechanicsville; and three grandchildren, Jonathon Powell, Jessica Carden and Daniel Powell.
