RIKE
Miss Dorothy Victoria Rike, 99, of Richmond, died at a local nursing home Thursday, August 1, 2002. She was daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Englehardt Gustave Rike; and sister of the late Frances Rike Ewing. She is survived by her niece, Dorothy Ewing Ferrell and her husband, James William Ferrell III; a great-niece, Laura Elizabeth Wingfield Ferrell; and a great-nephew, James William Ferrell IV. A graduate of Stuart Hall School and the Julliard School of Music, Miss Rike was a member of St. James's Episcopal Church. She was a buyer for Thalhimers and retired as a buyer for Montaldo's. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 5 in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Stuart Hall School in Staunton or St. James's Episcopal Church.

SCHAAF
Edward M. Schaaf Jr., 88, of Richmond, died Friday, August 2, 2002. He was the widower of Edith Laughon Schaaf. He is survived by three children, Edward M. Schaaf III and his wife, Frances, F. Behle Schaaf and his wife, Dona, Elizabeth S. Chase and her husband, Jon; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Alexander, Kristan, Christopher, Whitney, Kelsey, Courtney and Erin; and his special friend, Lucille O'Neil. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Hollywood Cemetery. Mr. Schaaf was a graduate of the University of Richmond in 1936, and was a member of the football team from 1934 until 1936, serving as co-captain in 1935. He was inducted into the University of Richmond Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He served in the U.S. Infantry during WWII, was a member of the Commonwealth Club and retired from Philip Morris as Vice President of Manufacturing after 41 years of service. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

SHIRLEY
Frances Collins Shirley passed away August 1, 2002 after a long and inspiring battle with breast cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Elvin. Her spirit lives on through her family. Survivors include her children, Gayle Snelson and her husband, Earl; Steven Shirley and his wife, Hope; Cindy Leisling and her husband, Fred; Mark Shirley and his wife, Loressa. She was very proud of her nine grandchildren, Diane Martin, Chris Warner, Grey Snelson, Ric Snelson, Kasey Shirley, Troy Leisling, Taylor Shirley, Brooke Leisling and Kristen Cios. She had three great-grandchildren, Paige and Luke Warner and Jason Martin. She leaves behind her beloved friend of 43 years, Louise Fowler; as well as brothers, Eugene and Stuart Collins; and sisters, Mildred Gantz and Margaret Crowder. She was preceded in death by her brother, James. She was a fine Christian to whom Elvin, family and church meant everything. "And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered." Funeral services will be held at Pioneer Baptist Church, 3140 Darbytown Rd., at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Interment church cemetery. NELSEN FUNERAL HOME

SQUIRES
Malcolm Hart Squires, 86, of Petersburg, died August 2, 2002 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Severs in 1997. Mac was a local builder and former president of the Southside Virginia Home Builders Association. As a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church, he held office as a deacon, elder, and trustee, and was named Elder Emeritus in 1998. An avid historian, he served as Governor of the Jamestowne Society from 1987 to 1989. He is survived by a son, Malcolm H. Squires Jr. and his wife, Kathryn; a daughter, Alice S. Martin and her husband, Brandon; grandchildren, John Martin, Hart Squires, Harris Squires and Emily Martin; and one brother, William H. Squires of Greenwood, S.C. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 6 at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends in the church parlor following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Presbyterian Church.

TALLEY
Christine Pool Talley of Chesterfield, widow of Coley Talley, died August 2, 2002. She is survived by three daughters, Patsy Garrison, Mary and Nancy Lacks; two sons, James and Ron Talley; and five brothers and sisters, 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Hyles Baptist Church, 7200 Courthouse Rd., where the family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment 3 p.m. at the Oakridge Cemetery in South Boston. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hyles Baptist Church Bus Ministry.

WALKER
Lois Wills Walker went to be with our Lord on Saturday, August 3, 2002. Lois was the widow of the late Robert Otey Walker Jr., and the daughter of the late Buford Cox Wills and Carrie Tyler Wills formerly of Richmond, Va. She was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, the Rachel Sunday School class and the Tuesday morning Bible Study. She was also a member of Thalia Friendship Circle of the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters for over 40 years. Survivors include two devoted sons, Robert Otey Walker III and his wife, Anita Blythe Walker of Virginia Beach, and James Freeman Walker of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Jennifer Blythe Walker of Chesapeake, Kelly Walker Gregory and her husband, David Lee Gregory of Virginia Beach, Thomas James Walker and Nathan Wills Walker of Portsmouth; two great-granddaughters, Chelsey Renee Gregory and Jordan Lee Gregory of Virginia Beach; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Glenn W. Tharp; a nephew, W.D. "Skip" Tharp and his wife, Kathy Terrel Tharp, all of Bedford, Va.; a great-nephew, Christopher Freeman Tharp and his wife, Sarah Glass of Lynchburg, Va. The family will receive friends at 1717 Rally Dr., Broad Bay Estates, Virginia Beach, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Services will be held at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, with Rev. Mark Olson officiating at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2002. A private burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park immediately following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

WARD
Esther Rae Ward, age 82, of Cobbs Creek, died Friday evening. She was a native of Mathews County and a member of Beulah United Methodist Church. As a longtime member of Piankatank Rebekah Lodge #85, she served as Noble Grand and Treasurer, and received the Declaration of Chivalry. She drove a school bus for York Academy for 26 years. Survived by her husband, Julian Tod Ward Sr.; son Julian Tod Ward Jr. of New Kent; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Sunday evening, 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in the St. Paul Annex Cemetery, Susan. Memorial donations may be made to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, Mathews, Va. 23109. Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, is in charge of the arrangements.

WINFREE
Mr. Latham Thomas Winfree, born June 27, 1913 in Richmond, Va., died on June 14, 2002 in Peoria, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian Thomas Winfree and Elizabeth Cowherd Winfree. Before retirement, Mr. Winfree was a retail sales representative for several truck and automotive companies. Prior to relocating in Arizona, he served as chair of the East Rochester, N.Y. Narcotics Guidance Council and director of Civil Defense for East Rochester. In Arizona, he was a member and elder at the Faith Presbyterian Church; past president of Sun City AARP; past president of the First Rotary Club of Sun City; Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary International; past treasurer of the Sierra Winds Foundation, Peoria, Ariz. Mr. Winfree was a 33rd Degree Mason, having first affiliated with the Mechanicsville, Va. Masonic Lodge. Mr. Winfree is survived by his wife, Norma R. Winfree; sons and their wives, Latham Thomas and Eileen J. Winfree; Roderick L. and Beverly F. Fox; daughter and her husband, Adelaide and Glenn Garnsey; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Daisy Ballard, 101, who died June 14, 2001, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 21, in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

BERRY
James William Berry, age 87, passed away at a local hospital June 17, 2001. Mr. Berry was preceded in death by his wife, Florence F. Berry; and two sisters, Minnie B. Dale of Richmond and Christine B. Pippen of Glen Allen. His survivors include one brother, Ellis L. Berry of Glen Allen; and two sisters, Nannie B. Welch of Chesterfield and Helen A. Berry of Richmond; as well as one nephew, two nieces, six great-nephews, two great-nieces, and two great-great-nieces. Mr. Berry was retired from E.I. DuPont as an electrician with 38 years of service. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 207 and Lakeside Presbyterian Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at 2 p.m., at Westhampton Memorial Park.

BISHOP
Earl Payne Bishop, 66, retired, passed away June 17, 2001. Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bishop; and a brother, William Bishop, all of Buckingham, Va. Mr. Bishop was born in Buckingham County but was a longtime resident of Richmond. He is survived by five sisters, Virginia Wilkerson, Fannie Bishop of Lynchburg, Olene Ragland of Madison Heights, Va., Annie Bishop of Richmond, and Ruth Hoitt of Montpelier, Va.; five brothers, Roy, Kenneth, Dean, all of Richmond, Melvin of Mechanicsville, Va., and Austin of Arvonia, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., Mechanicsville with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Ln., off Laburnum Ave. The family received friends on Monday, June 18, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m.

BURTON
Covington Morrison Burton of Richmond, widow of Mahlon L. Burton Jr., died Sunday, June 17, 2001. She is survived by her son, David C. Burton of Ashland; her daughter, Ruth B. Faris of Midlothian; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Burton was retired from Hankins & Anderson Consulting Engineers. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 21, in Hollywood Cemetery. Arrangements by the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.

CHAVIS
Lawrence K. Chavis, of 18501 Chestnut Ridge, Petersburg, Va., departed this life June 17, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Chavis was born in Philadelphia, Pa. Upon graduation from high school he entered the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Bachelor of Science degree. He earned the Master of Education degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. While at Rutgers, Chavis was inducted into the Delta Xi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the honorary fraternity in Education. He completed further studies at the General Motors Institute of Technology, the Auto-Lite Electric Service School, and the Raybester Brake School. In 1940, Chavis joined the faculty of Virginia State College (now University). He was an enthusiastic instructor of Industrial Technology and was an active member of several college committees. He retired as assistant professor of Industrial Technology in 1975, after 35 years of service. In addition to his career as an educator, Chavis was an avid numismatist, having been a chapter member of the Franklin Mint Collectors' Society and the Southside Virginia Numismatic Society, holding the second honorary life membership in the latter organization, and served on this organization for two terms as president. His other numismatic affiliations include The American Numismatic Association, The Middle Atlantic Numismatic Association, Club Francais De La Medaille (Paris) and the Society of Paper Money Collectors, the American Negro Commemorative Society, serving on the Society's Board of Advisors. Chavis contributed numerous articles to numismatic journals, including the Virginia Numismatist. He received several citations for promoting numismatics throughout the state and nation. In 1977, Chavis was recommended to the White House by a former director of the Mint for appointment to the 1977 Annual Assay Commission. In 1980, he received the select Numismatic Ambassador Award from Krause Publications, publisher of Numismatic News, a major numismatic publication. He and his wife, the late Viola Chavis, traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, visiting mints and attending state, regional, and national conventions at which he presented award-winning numismatic exhibits. Chavis was most proud of his Martin Luther King Jr. collection which was shown in Atlanta, Ga., Richmond, Va. and Petersburg, Va. among other localities. Later the collection was donated to the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs, Colo. Chavis was a faithful member of the Zion Baptist Church and served as a member and former president of the Joint Usher Board and as a member of the Giles B. Evans Memorial Club and contributor to the Zion Herald News. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola S. Chavis. He is survived by his loving and devoted son, Lawrence E. Chavis; one grandson, Cedric E. Chavis and great-grandson, Cedric J. Chavis; daughter-in-law, Bettie D. Chavis. Also he leaves to mourn one sister, Grace C. Dingle of Philadelphia, Pa.; cousins, Hazel Lindsey of Woodford, Va., Doris F. Smith of Wilmington, Del., Phillis Drayton of W. Hemstead, N.Y. and Vera Woodruff of Detroit, Mich. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001 at the Zion Baptist Church, 225 Byrne Street, Petersburg, the Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White, pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the Dinwiddie Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the chapel of the James M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment.
