SCALES
Mr. Robert L. Scales, age 73, of Cumberland, Va., departed this life on Saturday, June 16, 2001 in Cumberland. He is survived by his wife, Betty Gilliam Scales; his four children, Michael D. Scales, Patricia D. Scales, Jeffrey C. Scales and Rita Scales-Modi; seven grandchildren; an aunt, Kittie Mae Morris; a son-in-law, Rahamtalla Elasha; a daughter-in-law, Olinga W. Scales; a sister-in-law, Mamie Scales; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. His remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home, Cumberland, Va. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Cumberland County High School Gymnasium, where remains will lie in state two hours prior to the service. Rev. Robert Jones, officiating, with interment in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.

SMITH
Joseph Smith of 3116 Woodrow Ave. entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 14, 2001, after a brief illness. Left to mourn his passing are his father, Deacon Aaron J. Smith Sr.; his daughter, Gloria Ann Kenny; four brothers, Deacon Aaron Jr., Rev. Lawrence V., Jerry L. and Morgan L. Smith; four sisters, Mary Ellen Langley, Margaret E. Smith, Harriet M. Matthews and Lora Scales; two brothers-in-law, James Langley Sr. and Monte Scales; three sisters-in-law, Helen, Lois and Celestine Smith; two aunts, Martha Brown and Estelle Curtis; two uncles, Edmund Smith and Spencer Curtis Sr.; one grandddaughter, one great-granddaughter, host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. After 12 noon Wednesday, remains will rest at Sharon Baptist Church, 1st and Leigh Sts., where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Interment St. James Baptist Church Cemetery, Beaverdam, Va.

STACKHOUSE
Kenneth Allen Stackhouse was born November 5, 1944 in Barnegat, N.J. and passed away on June 16, 2001 in Richmond, Va. He is survived by his wife, Marcia Dunham Stackhouse; his two children, Amy Dunham Stackhouse and Daniel Jennings Stackhouse; and his ten month old granddaughter, Emily Dunham Sussmann; his mother, Virginia Nunn; and his brother, Norman Stackhouse. Dr. Stackhouse was an associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Virginia Commonwealth University. After obtaining a Bachelors of Arts Degree, Magna Cum Laude, at Drew University, Dr. Stackhouse received his M.A. and Ph.D.. at the University of Florida. He was president of the Partners of the Americas, had served on the Board of Directors of the Association for Classical Hispanic Theatre and was a member of numerous honor societies and the author of numerous professional publications and translations. Dr. Stackhouse played flamenco and classical guitar, was fond of sailing and sailboarding, loved poetry and attended the symphony regularly. Dr. Stackhouse's remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday June 19. Funeral services will be held at Lakeside United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20. Burial will take place in the family plot in Barnegat Cemetery, Barnegat, N.J. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Richmond SPCA, 1600 Chamberlayne Ave.

STEELE
Jerrell A. Steele of 3909 Patrick Ave. died June 17, 2001. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Pk. Blvd. Funeral notice later.

WARE
Agnes High Smith Ware of Dunnsville, died on the morning of June 18, 2001 in Tappahannock. She was born December 24, 1912 in Baxley, Georgia to Agnes Eason High Smith and James Parker Highsmith. She graduated from Wesleyan College with an AB in 1933, received a masters degree in English from the University of Georgia in 1936 and graduated from Yale University with a Masters of Divinity in 1940. In 1944, she married James Catesby Ware who predeceased her. She taught French and English at Tappahannock High School and was a published poet. Sons James Catesby Ware Jr. of Norfolk and Peter High Smith Ware of Toronto, Canada; her daughters-in-law, Carolyn Cain Ware and Lynn Harting Ware; and her granddaughter, Catherine Cain Ware, survive her. Family visitation will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20 at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Helen War, 1115 Boaters Way, Dunnsville. The funeral service will be a Rappahannock Christian Church, Dunnsville at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2001. Interment church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Rappahannock Christian Church Endowment Fund, Essex County Public Library, Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia or the YWCA. Arrangements by Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock, Va.

ALIOTTI
Jean Seads Aliotti, 85, of Richmond, formerly of Izmir, Turkey and Rome, Italy, passed away on May 25, 2001. She was the widow of Guido G. Aliotti and is survived by her daughter, Virginia Solari, of Richmond; two sons, John C. Aliotti, of Richmond and Lucio G. Aliotti of Milan, Italy; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ms. Aliotti attended Mount Holyoke College and while traveling abroad met and married Guido Aliotti of Rome, Italy. While in Izmir, Turkey she taught math at the Air Force Dependant's School and in later years she was instrumental in setting up and running the Maryland University Extension Program for the Armed Forces overseas. In the early 80's they moved to Richmond to be close to their children. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to St. Bridget's Mother Butler sewing guild. A funeral service will be held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church at the corner of Forest and Patterson Ave. on Tuesday, May 29 at 12 noon with interment at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the local chapter for the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Rd., Glen Allen, Va. 23060.

BALALLO
Elpidio Quitasol Balallo, 80, of Richmond, passed away May 25, 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents, Teodurico and Juana Balallo. He is survived by his wife, Cristina Balallo; and his children, Gloria Damasco and her husband, Honesto, Amante Balallo and his wife, Esperanza, Samson Balallo and his wife, Lourdes, Cesar Balallo and his wife, Larcy, and Gerry Balallo and his wife, Beth; two brothers, Benjamin and Cosme Balallo; grandchildren, Ione Tara Damasco, Arnell Damasco, Raymond Balallo, Maricris Balallo, Kareena Ashley Balallo, Christopher Justin Balallo, and Alexa Rae Balallo; great-grandchildren, Kellie Divine Grace Balallo and Alysa Balallo. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday, and where a Christian Wake will be 7 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Resurrection will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church with interment to follow, Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

BOLIN
CWO4 Charles Howard Bolin, age 61, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2001. Mr. Bolin is survived by his wife, Mrs. Natividad G. Bolin; two daughters, Mrs. Charlin B. Hopkins and Mrs. Regina L. Bell; two sons-in-law, John R. Hopkins and Scott W. Bell; three grandchildren, Gavin C. Hopkins, Natalie B. Hopkins, and Brittany L. Bell, all of Richmond; sister, Gladys Kling; uncle, Lloyd Jenkins; aunt, Irene Jenkins; niece, LouAnne Kling; nephew, Charles Kling, all of Kansas. Mr. Bolin served 26 years in the U.S. Navy. After retiring, he volunteered his services at Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration for 12 years, where a memorial service will be held Saturday, June 2, at 1 p.m. in the chapel. Mr. Bolin will receive a naval burial at sea on a later date. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration.

BRADLEY
W. Edward Bradley of Richmond died May 24, 2001. He is survived by his daughters, Beth Bradley of Atlanta and Caroline Bradley of Richmond; son, Mark Bradley of Richmond; grandson, Caleb Wilson of Richmond. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends Sunday 4 to 6 p.m. Graveside services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Henrico Humane Society.

BRILL
Jerline Talley Brill of Highland Springs died Thursday, May 24, 2001. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Brill Jr. and is survived by many cousins and a host of devoted friends. Mrs. Brill was an employee with Liggett & Myers for many years and was a devoted member of New Bridge Baptist Church. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the New Bridge Baptist Church Building Fund.

BROWN
Mildred G. Brown passed away May 25, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph M. Brown. She is survived by a son, James Rudolph Jr. (Rudy/J.R.); and a stepson, Nick Brown; three granddaughters, Deborah Denmark, Donna Taylor and Susan Brown; a grandson, Jeff Brown; four great-grandchildren, Marie Smith, Daniel Denmark Jr., Christian Denmark and Cody Taylor. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

CAMPBELL
Elgin Reid Campbell of Richmond died May 24, 2001 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Edwards Campbell; daughter, Lisa Campbell; son, Bruce Campbell and his wife, Carole of Hopewell; brother, William Campbell of Charleston, W.Va. He was retired from the U.S. Navy, having been a hospital corpsman, dental technician and achieved the final rank of petty officer first class. He was retired from Bellwood DGSC in 1997 and a member of Bon Air Baptist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

CLARK
Virginia Wilson Clark, 41, of Mechanicsville, passed away May 26, 2001. She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Jo Guthrie. She is survived by her husband, James R. Clark; daughters, Latrisha D. Walton and Samantha R. Spicer; two sons, Robert J. Doak and Daniel W. Jenkins; three grandchildren; father, James A. Wilson; stepfather, Herman E. Guthrie. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 11 a.m. at Fairmount United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to East Hanover Vol. Rescue Squad.

CROW
Chief Master Sgt. William H. Crow, USAF retired, age 80, died May 24, 2001, in Richmond, Va. Born March 9, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Mr. Crow entered the military service at age 18. He served in the China-Burma-India Campaign of WWII. He was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in Muroc, Calif., from 1945 to 1954. He worked in the Air Force Flight Test Center on programs involving the XB-35 (The Flying Wing), the B36 and the X-1. He then served in the 86th Fighter Interceptor Wing in Landstuhl, Germany, and the 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (ADC) at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, with tours in Korea and at the 328 Combat Support Group of Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Missouri. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for outstanding achievement at Detachment One, 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Byrd Field, Sandston, Va. After his retirement, Mr. Crow was employed locally by Havener Supply. Mr. Crow is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elsie; his six children, Barbara of Los Angeles, Bill, Donald and Joseph of Richmond, Mark of Rimini, Italy, Rebecca of Tacoma, Wash.; his sister, Mildred of Montebello, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a Christian Wake service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Patrick's Church.

DOGGETT
Sissie Mae Doggett, 90, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston. Born on August 23, 1910, in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Lee Doggett and Martha Nathelia Moore. Miss Doggett worked as a nurse's assistant for Ralls Nursing Home for 33 years, then moved back to Boydton in May of 1976. Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Watkins Cooper Lyon Chapel in Clarksville with Rev. Edward Herzel officiating. Interment will follow in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Skipwith. Surviving are sisters, Nancy Naegler and Mary Lee Herzel, both of Morganton, N.C.; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday prior to the funeral at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home. Contributions to Liberty Baptist Church Building Fund.

EASTWOOD
Ruth Saul, 83, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001, wife of the late Charlie G. Eastwood; mother of Ken C. Eastwood and the late Nancy D. Eastwood; mother-in-law of Bonye H. Eastwood; sister of the late Aldridge and Cleveland Saul; grandmother of Amy and Barrett Eastwood; and sister-in-law of Lavonia Lawhorn. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 29 at 10 a.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

EELLS
Margaret (Peggy) Harby Eells, 83, of 1713 Bellevue Ave., Richmond, passed away Friday, May 25, 2001 at Johnston-Willis Hospital. She was born July 22, 1917 in Westfield, N.J., daughter of the late Walter Nathan Harby and the late Ada Jones Harby. She is survived by her husband, Henry Wilson Eells; son, John Harby Eells and wife, Alice of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Donna Christine Mayo, Damon Stark Mayo and wife, Cheryl, Sara Eells Charbonneau and husband, James, Erin Mallory Eells, John Christopher Eells; and three great-grandchildren, Bridget Mayo, Deborah Mayo, and Daniel Mayo. She was predeceased by her daughter, Carolyn Eells Mayo. Mrs. Eells was a retired executive assistant with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. Peggy was a member of St. Michaels Episcopal Church, the Newcomers Club, the D.A.R., the Mayflower Society and the Eastern Star. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Michaels Episcopal Church, 8706 Quaker Lane, Richmond, Va. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to your local rescue squad.
