FARMER
Edith B. Farmer, 80, of Richmond (formerly of Fredericksburg), died Friday, May 25, 2001 at her residence. Arrangements are incomplete at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel.

FARRAR
Nelvina C. Farrar, 80, of Dillwyn, died May 26, 2001. She was born December 14, 1920 in Coeburn, Va. She is survived by her husband, Robert D. Farrar Sr.; two children, Karen F. Smith of New Canton and Tim P. Farrar of Dillwyn; stepchildren, Remona Hatcher of Columbia, S.C., Robert D. (Danny) Farrar Jr. of New Canton and Larry E. Farrar of Jarratt; four sisters, Virginia Weaver of Duff, Tenn., Flossie Harvey of Raleigh, W.Va., Hildred Walton of Oak Hill, W.Va., and Barbara Harvey of Beaver, W.Va.; a brother, Henry Childs of Saline, Mich.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn with interment in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, W.Va. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buckingham Rescue Squad or the Dillwyn Fire Dept.

GOFF
Mrs. Louise Frances Goff, age 85, of Manassas, Va., formerly of Cumberland, Va., departed this life on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 in Manassas. She is survived by three sons, William Goff Jr. of New York, Frederick Carter Goff and Charles Edward Goff of Virginia; one daughter, Mary Leslie Booker of New York; 17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Johnson of New Jersey and Rosa Bell Mack of Maryland; one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Goff; a sister-in-law, Thelma Mack; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Her remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home, Cumberland, Va. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m. at Center Union Baptist Church, Cumberland. Rev. Louis Hembrick, pastor, officiating with interment in the church cemetery.

GRAFF
Conrad Lawrence "Larry" Graff Jr., 78, of Glen Allen, died Friday, May 25, 2001 at home. He is survived by his wife, Verna Wickham Graff. They were married for 54 years. He is also survived by two daughters, Verna L. Graff-Gessaman and her husband, John R. Gessaman, and Virginia Graff-Muse and her husband, David J. Muse; five grandchildren, Lea Graff Gessaman, Kurt Loren Gessaman, Eleanor Mercedes Muse, Roger Muse and Kathleen Gilfoil; and two brothers. Mr. Graff led a distinguished naval career beginning with his enlistment in the United State Navy in Los Angeles, California in September 1940, and serving faithfully and honorably as a Chief Machinist Mate in the regular Navy until retirement from active duty in April 1960. Mr. Graff was in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, serving on the U.S.S. Tennessee on Battleship Row, where he earned the first of many medals. He stayed on the U.S.S. Tennessee through the Battle of Midway before transferring to the U.S.S. Denver. It was on the U.S.S. Denver, in October 1944, that he was again decorated in the historically significant Battle of Surigao Straight, the longest gun to gun battle engagement in U.S. Naval history. Mr. Graff was in the final stages of the Pacific War, active in the occupation of Japan. He received a total of 17 battle-related decorations during the engagements of World War II. He continued serving his country in ports around the world, as well as at home, until full retirement after 30 years on June 1, 1970. Mr. Graff loved Glen Allen Baptist Church and was a faithful member. He was a member of Glen Allen Lodge #131, AF&AM, Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, where he took an active part in conferring the Ninth Degree for many years, ACCA Temple Shrine, a charter member of the Glen Allen Shrine Club, Past Patron of Glen Allen Chapter #61, O.E.S. and a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Remains rest at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Glen Allen Baptist Church. Interment in the Church of Our Saviour Cemetery, Montpelier.

GREDEL
Barbara J. Gredel, age 57, of Sandston, died Saturday, May 26, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Steve Gredel; and three children, Tommy, Kevin and his wife, Laura and Bernadette Gredel; one brother, Craig Miles; one sister, Connie Wynn and her husband, George; and a grandson, Morgan Gredel. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

HATCHER
Kathleen Harmon "Kitty" Hatcher, 73, of Richmond, died Thursday, May 24, 2001. She was the widow of Robert E. Hatcher and is survived by her sisters, Virginia Gunter of Vass, N.C., and Mildred Spear of Carthage, N.C.; a brother, Robert Wayne Harmon of Hot Springs, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hatcher was a member of New Covenant Baptist Church, a past president of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Lupus Foundation, and a retired employee of the commonwealth of Virginia with 45 years of service. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Funeral service 1:30 p.m. Sunday in New Covenant Baptist Church, with interment in Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lupus Foundation of America Inc., Central Virginia Chapter, P.O. Box 25418, Richmond, Va. 23260-5418.

HUBARD
William Stebbins Hubard, 77, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, May 25, 2001. He was born in Farmville, Va., December 18, 1923. He graduated from Farmville High School in 1941. He then attended St. Christopher's School and graduated in 1942. He received his A.B. from the College of William & Mary in 1947 and graduated summa cum laude from Washington & Lee University in 1950 with an LL.B. degree. He was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1949. He was a partner of Martin, Martin & Hopkins from 1950-1954 and then served as vice president-administration at Shenandoah Life Insurance Company from 1954-1985. He was also president of Center in the Square from 1985-1991 and was a director of Coreast Savings Bank from 1975-1989. He served his country in the United States Navy during WWII from 1943-1946. He served his state as a member of the Commission on Local Government from 1980-1998 (chairman 1983 and 1991) and as a member of the Board of Visitors of the College of William & Mary from 1970-1979. He served his city as a member of the Roanoke City Council from 1972-1980 and as a commissioner and chairman of the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority from 1959-1972. He was involved in numerous organizations throughout the Roanoke Valley and received the following awards for his community service: Father of the Year - Civic Affairs, 1960; Roanoke Jaycees, Distinguished Citizen, 1980; National Conference for Community and Justice, Humanitarian Award, 1993; National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Silver Hope Award, 1999. He was a member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati, Sons of the American Revolution, Phi Beta Kappa, Order of the Coif and Omicron Delta Kappa. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Elizabeth "Libba" Grey Jeffreys from Goldsboro, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, W. Stebbins Hubard Jr. and Patricia "Bunny" C. Hubard; daughter and son-in-law, Gay Hubard Kelly and R. Glenn Kelly; daughter and son-in-law, Virginia "Ginny" Hubard Alphin and George M. "Monty" Alphin; and son and daughter-in-law, Thomas M. Hubard and Susan W. Hubard; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, Edmund Wilcox Hubard Jr. of Silver Springs, Md., and John Wayles Eppes Hubard of Virginia Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews. His two sisters, Page Hubard Wiley, Denton, Texas, and Fredrika Hubard Nichols, Portsmouth, Va., both predeceased him. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 29, at 12:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends after the service in the church garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Apple Ridge Farms, 541 Luck Avenue, SW, Suite 228, Roanoke, Va. 24016.

JOHNSON
Erma G. "Tommy" Johnson, 89, of Colonial Heights, died Friday, May 25, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Mallory T. Johnson; a daughter and son-in-law, Ora "Dee" and Steven Garcia; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas A. and Denise Johnson; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; three nieces, Edna Paylor, Mary Bailey and Jean Linville; a nephew, Rev. Kenneth King. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3701 Conduit Rd., Colonial Heights, where there will be a viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church.

Walter H. Loving of 5321 Snowden Lane, died May 26, 2001. He was founder and former owner of Walter H. Loving Realty Co. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

LYONS
William Keith (Bill) Lyons of Richmond passed away Friday, May 25, 2001 at his home after a long and courageous fight with a brain tumor. Bill was born on December 14, 1949 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C. and was the son of the late C. Keith Lyons and the late Elaine Stoops and Nelson Stoops, who preceded him in death. He was raised in South Charleston, W.Va. and attended West Virginia University. He continued to be an avid fan of the Mountaineers. Bill had a 29 year career in the pharmaceutical industry. His latest position was with Astra Zeneca in Richmond. Surviving are his wife, Corrie Hamilton Lyons; son, Matthew; and daughter, Sarah. He is also survived by his three sisters, Linda Renier, Margaret Batchelor and her husband, Ed and Marie Monroe and her husband, Rodney; along with their children. Bill is also survived by two stepbrothers, Jim and Nelson Stoops and their families. His extended family includes his three brothers-in-law, Skip, Billy and David Hamilton and their families. During his career he moved numerous times and called Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Richmond all home. Bill loved and was loved by his family and friends and was fondly known for his sense of humor and huge heart. He will be sorely missed by all. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 27 at 1 p.m. and a service to follow at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, Pouncey Tract Rd., Glen Allen, Va. Burial immediately following at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Duke University Medical Center, 047 Baker House, Box 3624, Durham, N.C. 27710; or MCV Massey Cancer Center Brain Tumor Research, P.O. Box 980037, Richmond, Va. 23298. These two institutions helped Bill maintain a productive and fulfilling life.

MARSHALL
Joseph Franklin Marshall Sr., age 77, of Colonial Heights, died Friday, May 25, 2001. He is survived by his son and his wife, Joseph F. Jr. and Debbie A. Marshall of Colonial Heights; two daughters and their husbands, Carol M. and Anthony R. Creasy of St. Stephens Church, and Connie M. and Edward R. Barricks of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother and his wife, Linwood L. and Lorraine Marshall; two grandchildren, Andrew J. and Kristen E. Marshall. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association.

MAY
Mr. Ralph May Jr. of Richmond, Va. died in his home on Thursday, May 24, 2001 following a lengthy illness with cancer. He was born on October 28, 1944, son of the late Ralph and Alka "Cookie" May Sr. of Wytheville, Va. Ralph is survived by his partner of 18 years, David J. Domster; along with numerous friends and loved ones. He received his B.S. of English from the University of Richmond and his Master of Education from The University of Virginia. His career began as an educator in Rural Retreat, Va., continued in Richmond, Va., where he excelled as a high school guidance counselor in the Henrico County School System. As an educator, Ralph mentored numerous students who continued to seek his advice and friendship until his death. More recently, Ralph worked as a manager at Verizon and continued to positively influence those around him. He was very active with individual's rights, supporting such organizations as The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, ROSMY, Virginians for Justice and GLOBE. Ralph chose to live life in a manner that elevated everyone around him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2001, 1 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church of Richmond, 1000 Blanton Ave., Richmond, Va. Immediately following the service, friends of Ralph are welcome at his home to remember his neverending spirit. Memorial contributions may be made to The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, Virginians for Justice, ROSMY or the organization of your choice.

MONROE
Mary W. Monroe, 83, of Richmond, formerly of Chatham, N.J. and Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y., died Friday, May 25, 2001. She was a devoted wife and mother and is survived by her husband of 56 years, Paul S. Monroe Sr.; two sons, Dr. Paul S. Monroe Jr. and Dr. John A. Monroe; a sister, Helen Miller; a brother, John Wilkalis; three grandchildren, Rachel, Nicholas and Alexander Monroe. Mrs. Monroe waa a recent recipient of the Rumpford Award from Rutgers University and a graduate of Bucknell University. Services and interment will be held at a later date in New York.
