SCOTT
John Wingfield Scott, 36, of Bumpass, died on September 19, 2002. He is survived by his daughter, Grace Vaughan Scott of Frederick, Md.; his parents, Vaughan H. and Walter W. Scott of Richmond; his brother, Dr. Walter W. Scott Jr. and his wife, Dr. Angela R. Scott of Greenville, N.C.; his sister, Mary Wingfield Scott Walters and her husband, Paul L. Walters of Richmond; two nephews and a niece. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Burial will be private. Contributions in his memory can be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 East Grace St., Richmond, Va. 23219, or to Ducks Unlimited, P.O. Box 5204, Richmond, Va. 23220 to support conservation efforts.

THOMAS
Dr. Frederick B. Thomas, DDS, age 83, of Bedford, died Thursday, September 19, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Julia Kirkwood Thomas; two sons and daughters-in-law, John F. and Catheryn Thomas, Wilmington, N.C. and Charles M. and Shannon Thomas, Bedford; a daughter, Mary Katherine Thomas, Bedford; two grandsons, Alexander Jacob Thomas, Andrew Frederick Thomas; an aunt, Martha M. (Pete) Thomas, Hampton. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, September 21, 2002 at 2 p.m. from the Thaxton Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Michael DuVal. Interment will follow in the Peaks Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence at any time. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.

Raye Edward Usry of Richmond, beloved son of Elizabeth G. Usry and the late George William Usry, died suddenly September 19, 2002. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Usry; his sister, Mary Anne Usry Dease and her husband, Richard Gregory Dease; grandson, Justin Michael Usry. Raye was a bright light in the universe, a loving and gentle spirit. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. September 21, 2002 at the Palmer Chapel at Hollywood Mausoleum. Funeral arrangements handled by Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave.

VAUGHAN
Chester Hagood Vaughan, 84, of Charles City Road, Richmond, Va., went to be with the Lord September 20, 2002. He is survived by his brother, Willie E. Vaughan of Richmond; and his sisters, Virginia Newcomb of Mechanicsville and Gracy Campbell, Margaret Hudson and Frances V. Palmer, all of Richmond. He was a member of Varina Baptist Church. He served in the 159th Quartermaster Battalion, Medical Detachment in the China, Burma, India theatre during WWII. The family will receive friends from 2 until 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., where services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. BAILEY
Gladys Jefferson Bailey, 93, of Richmond, formerly of Chatham, Va., died March 2, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Oliver Bailey. Survivors include her daughter, Charlotte Downs and her husband, Dean Downs Sr. of Mechanicsville; two sisters, Janet J. Lawrence and Octavia J. Oakes, both of Chatham, Va.; four grandchildren, Deborah Embler of Meriden, Conn., Cheryl Green of Chester, Paula Downs of Chesterfield, and Dean Downs Jr. of Blacksburg, Va.; nine great-grandchildren; and a devoted sister-in-law, Hollie Bailey Shelton and her husband, William Shelton of Mechanicsville. Mrs. Bailey was a longtime member of Westover Baptist Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday (today). Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Westover Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westover Baptist Church.

BRICE
Annie P. Brice, 93, of Goochland, Va., formerly of Richmond, Va., departed this life Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Meadows Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 4, 2 p.m. at the Chief Cornerstone Baptist Church, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to service, Rev. Adlai Allen, pastor, officiating. Interment church cemetery. Robert Mealy Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Please omit food.

BRYAN
Sarah Cooke "Cookie" Bryan of the 900 block of Marshall Circle, Virginia Beach, passed away unexpectedly February 27, 2002, while vacationing in Louisiana. Mrs. Bryan was born in Norge, Va., and was the daughter of the late George Harris Cooke Sr. and the late Frances Marguerite Williams Cooke. Mrs. Bryan was valedictorian of her class at Toano High School in 1946. She graduated from Riverside School of Nursing in 1950, and retired as a registered nurse in 1994, with over 25 years of service; her most recent 16 years spent with Sentara Leigh Hospital. Cookie was a member of the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church and it's Agape Sunday School Class for over 45 years. At the time of her death, she was co-president of the class. Cookie played in several bridge clubs, played tennis at least once a week, and was currently a member of the Virginia Beach Racquet Club. She had also enjoyed square dancing with the Dixie Squares and round dancing. Mrs. Bryan was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Sanders; and two brothers, George Harris Cooke and Dwight Haley Cooke. Survivors include her beloved husband, Bill; her daughters, Roxanne Sheppard, Rhonda Harris, and Rochelle Heron; her sisters, Frances Ward, Wanda Calhoon, Rose Seay, and Lucille Humphreys; her brother, Littleberry Milton Cooke; two grandsons, Casey and Carter Heron; her sons-in-law, Steve Sheppard and Naval Commander Chaz Heron; and her stepchildren, Bill Bryan Jr., Wayne Bryan, and Colleen Duesberry; as well as their spouses and children. A memorial service will be conducted at 12 Noon, March 5, 2002 at the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 19th St. and Pacific Ave., by Rev. James M. Tongue. The family will receive guests in the Social Hall after the service. Burial will be private. The family will also receive visitors at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Chapel, 2002 Laskin Rd., Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Cookie's name to either the Agape Sunday School Class or the National Commission Against Drunk Driving.

BURTON
Norma (Shirley) Smith Burton, age 71, died suddenly on Friday, March 1, 2002, at her residence. She was a native of Nelson County and resided in Richmond for 54 years. She was a member of the Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Burton; two sons and daughter-in-law, Joel T. Burton of Mechanicsville, Va., Steven Tabb Burton and wife, Carol of Fort Worth, Texas; granddaughter, Alex Paige Burton; sister, Gertrude Robinson of Richmond. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

COLEMAN
Mrs. Lillian A. Coleman of Richmond departed this life Friday, March 1, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

COUDRIET
Charles Edward Coudriet, 55, passed away February 28, 2002 after a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Mr. Coudriet took an active role with the Multiple Myeloma Foundation to lobby Congress for more funding for the disease. Mr. Coudriet, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, was employed with various banks in Virginia and Maryland before returning to his birthplace of Richmond, Va. to work for Dominion Resources where he was president and CEO of Dominion Capital when he retired in December 2001. He also served as a former president and chairman of the board of Saxon Mortgage in Glen Allen, Va. Mr. Coudriet was a board member and former president of the National Home Equity Mortgage Association. He also enjoyed memberships at the Commonwealth Club and the University Club of Washington, D.C. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Jeanette Coudriet. Surviving are his wife, Katherine Furlong Coudriet; his two daughters, Katherine Anne and Charlotte McCauley Coudriet; and his son, Charles Edward Coudriet Jr. Also surviving are his sister, Susan and her husband, Ralph Freeman; and his brother, Steve and his wife, Ginny; and two nieces and two nephews. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with a Christian Vigil Service 7 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12 noon Monday at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park Ave. and Laurel St., Richmond. Interment Greenwood Cemetery. DENTON
Lucenia B. Denton, 91, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on March 1, 2002. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Stanley A. Dorsey and Haywood O. Denton; and her son, Bill Dorsey. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Anna Dorsey; grandchildren, Vickie Brunk, Debbie Robold, Stan Dorsey, and Chris Dorsey; nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). ENGLISH
Mrs. Betty B. English, age 78, of Richmond, died Thursday, February 28, 2002 at The Hermitage in Richmond. Mrs. English was born on October 19, 1923, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of the late Percy H. and Hazel H. Bayly. She was the loving wife of the late Mr. Edward J. English for 47 years. Mrs. English was a graduate of Stephen's College in Missouri, married in Hilo, Hawaii and she and her husband later returned to Richmond to live. She was a former school teacher and business manager of the Westwood Club. She was an active volunteer in all of her children's activities and also volunteered at The Science Museum of Virginia. Survivors include her three children, Betty S. English of Richmond, Kathryn English Roberts of Charlotte, N.C., and Marguerite (Riti) English Caton and her husband, David O. Caton Jr. of Hellertown, Pa.; her grandchildren, Kristin L. Roberts and Brian A. Roberts, both of Charlotte, David O. Caton Jr. and Sarah E. Caton, both of Hellertown, Pa.; and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Capt. Donald Bayly, USN (Retired) of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister, Judy Bayly of Turlock, Calif. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday evenings at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made in remembrance of Mrs. Betty B. FOX
Frances Beasley Fox of Richmond died February 26, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Paul H. Fox; daughter, Susan F. Fox-Hill and son-in-law, Col. Richard M. Hill; and a niece, Linda Beasley Pinney. Mrs. Fox was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Richmond, Tuckahoe and Windsor Farms Garden Clubs. She served on the Women's Committee of the Richmond Symphony, and also was a member of the Richmond Woman's Club. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2002 at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Rd., Richmond, Va. 23226. GARRETT
David R. Garrett, 55, of Powhatan, died February 28, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Juliana T. Garrett; a son, Benjamin John Carter of North Carolina; a daughter, Jessica Reed of Hawaii; his mother and stepfather, Hazel B. and Robert N. Daniels of Florida; and his stepmother, Betty Garrett of Midlothian. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the May Memorial Baptist Church, Powhatan. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.

GIBSON
Nell H. Woodlief Gibson of Richmond died on March 1, 2002. She was the widow of Stephen P. Gibson and was also predeceased by her parents, three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two brothers, Aubrey Woodlief Jr. and Bervin Woodlief, both of Wake Forest, N.C.; four sisters, Joyce Tilley of Rocky Mount, N.C., Lavoy Adams and Clina Wheeler, both of Durham, N.C. and Nadine Bradley of Winston-Salem, N.C. She is also survived by her special adopted family, Steve, Patti and Jackie Miller. Mrs. Gibson was a native of Wake Forest, N.C. and a long-time resident of Richmond. She was a former member of Leigh Street Baptist Church and a long-time active member of Elkhardt Baptist Church. She retired from the Travelers Insurance Co. after 35 years of service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday. Interment 12:30 p.m. Monday at Dale Memorial Park. Flowers are accepted, or memorial donations may be made to Elkhardt Baptist Church or Leigh Street Baptist Church.

HARRISON
Earlene Johnson Harrison of Richmond died Thursday, February 28, 2002 at the Masonic Home of Virginia. She was the widow of John A. Harrison, Winton H. Newkirk and John Bernard Spivey. She is survived by her sister, Beverly A. Johnson of Richmond; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Dallas H. Johnson of Fluvanna; four nieces, Dalene M. Landes of Midlothian, Sherran A. Haley of Ft. Worth, Texas, Sylvia M. Johnson and Virginia Lee Staton of Palmyra; seven great-nieces and nephews and two great-great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harrison was a retiree of Reynolds Metals Company. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she served as a Deacon, and was a member and past president of the Scottish Rite Woman's Club. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where services will be held at 12 noon Monday, March 4. Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia, 4101 Nine Mile Rd., Richmond, Va. 23223 or the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center at Richmond, Inc., 4202 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, Va. 23227.

HARRISON
Elisabeth Acker Harrison, age 88, of 10016 Cedarfield Ct., Richmond, Va., died suddenly and quietly on February 17, 2002. She is survived by three sons, Clayton Adelbert Farrar Jr., The Rev. C. Thomas Farrar and Lt. Col. David S. Farrar, USA (Ret); one daughter, Ann Farrar Browning; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two stepsons, Charles and Peter Harrison; and one stepdaughter, Elizabeth Harrison Morgan. Mrs. Harrison was born and raised in New York City and attended Spence in Vassar College. She married Clayton Adelbert Farrar Sr. (deceased) in 1934 and Henry A. Harrison (deceased) in 1964. She was one of the first female aviators flying small planes all over the country, a lifelong volunteer for the Red Cross, she drove ambulances during WWII. She was a master bridge player who enjoyed sharing her knowledge. Private funeral services will be held graveside at the Acker Family Plot, Woodlawn Cemetery, New York City on March 23. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice.
