MARTIN
Mattie Ferguson Martin, 102, of Richmond, died on Thursday, September 26, 2002. She was the widow of Curtis E. Martin and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Jacqueline Martin; three grandchildren and their spouses, Judy and Ray Green of South Boston, John and Suzanne Martin and Leslie and Robert Shakespeare, all of Richmond; six great-grandchildren, Hillary and Andrew Green, Mathew, Travis, Benjamin Martin and Adam Lyons; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Tori and Austin Shakespeare; and a number of nieces and nephews. Her family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church or your favorite charity.

MORBITZER
Kurt M. Morbitzer M.D., 83, of Sutherland, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2002 at the Southside Regional Medical Center. He is predeceased by his eldest son, Capt. Christopher G. Morbitzer, USA, who was killed in Vietnam in 1971. He is survived by two sons, Michael A. Morbitzer and Timothy K. Morbitzer; and three daughters, Marianne M. Bubier, Kathleen P. Block, Alexandra N. Morbitzer; his daughter-in-law, Renate L. Morbitzer; granddaughter, Michelle A. Morbitzer; and four grandsons, Joshua K. Bubier, Zachary T. Bubier, Jonathan Block and Matthew Block. Kurt was born in Troppau, Sudetanland in 1919. He served with distinction in World War II. After graduating in 1949 from the University of Erlangen, Germany, he worked with the U.S. military Police as an interpreter and translator as well as practicing medicine with the U.S. Army. In 1955, Kurt then continued his internship at St. Mary's Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y. and his residency in neuro-psychiatry at the New Jersey State Hospital, Ancora. He received his medical degree from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology specializing in neuro-psychiatry in 1962. Dr. Morbitzer became the Clinical Director of Central State Hospital in Petersburg in February 1962. In September 1962 he was appointed Psychiatric Director of the Southside Area Mental Hygiene Clinic in Petersburg. Dr. Morbitzer is greatly recognized by his peers as founder and creator of the 5 West Psychiatric Wing in Petersburg General Hospital. He entered into private practice in 1969 where he remained until his retirement in 1988. Dr. Morbitzer was also a consulting psychiatrist at Fort Lee, Va. and the Federal Correctional Institute of Petersburg for over 20 years. He was also staff at the Petersburg Psychiatric Institute and Poplar Springs Hospital. Kurt was an honorary Paul Harris Fellow member of the International Rotary Club for over 30 years, traveling to many countries throughout Europe. He was also a lifetime member of the American Psychiatric Association. Kurt must enjoyed his summer home on Lake Gaston for over 32 years. The family will hold a memorial service from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at the J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice or your local SPCA.

NOEL
Mrs. Mabel "Sweetie" Noel, age 87, died September 26, 2002 in Farmville. She was the widow of John F Noel and is survived by three sons, T. Howard Noel of Roanoke, Charles E. Noel of Mechanicsville and John W. Noel of Charlotte Courthouse; one sister, Mrs. Alice B Conway of Richmond; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville. Funeral services 2 p.m. Sunday, Farmville Baptist Church. Interment Trinity Memorial Gardens. Remembrances may be made to the Farmville Volunteer Fire Department.

PATTERSON
Henry S. "Pat" Patterson, 71, of Richmond, Virginia, passed from this life to the next on September 25, 2002. Pat was a prominent custom home builder in the West End of Richmond for 25 years. He was a past member of the board of directors of The Home Builders Association of Richmond. He graduated from Augusta military Academy and was an alumni of Hampton-Sydney College. He was proud to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard. Pat is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Virginia N. Patterson; his son, Staton Patterson; his daughter, Paige Person and her husband, Dennis; and his two precious grandchildren, Cody and Caitlin, all of Raleigh, N.C. He also leaves his stepfather, Stuart Butler; and sister, Joan Gleason. Pat lived in Richmond his whole life and recently maintained homes in both Richmond and Raleigh to be near his children and grandchildren. He was very much a family man and enjoyed living next door to his grandchildren. Pat loved his summer home in Ophelia, Virginia on the Potomac River. He could often be seen sitting on his deck over the water with the surf rolling in and the breeze blowing. He called these his "10 plus 3-star days." He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church on River Road, where there will be a graveside service held on Monday, September 30 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd.

ROYALL
Marian Miffleton Royall, 76, of Richmond, widow of James G. Royall Sr., passed away Thursday, September 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Royall Watkins and survivors include her son, James G. Royall Jr. of Richmond; and her daughters, Susan M. Royall and Nancy R. Roache, both of Louisa; grandchildren, Scott Ballou, Melanie Watkins, David Ballou, Michael Watkins, Heather Royall, Randy Roache and Benjamin Roache; a great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Ballou. The family will receive friends Friday, September 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Avenue. Graveside services will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Saturday, September 28, at 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society, 2100 L Street, NW,Washington, D.C. 20037, or your favorite animal care charity.

SCHRASS
Mark C. Schrass, 53, of Richmond, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia G. Schrass; mother, Pauline C. Schrass; one brother, Stephen Schrass; and one sister, Elizabeth Schrass. Services will be held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens on Sunday, September 29 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. David May will officiate the service for the family.

SIROTT
Shirley Sirott, a resident of Odessa, Texas, passed away on September 26, 2002 at the age of 80. Born on February 5, 1922 in Richmond, Va., she moved to Odessa in 1972 from Los Angeles, Calif. She was a member of Temple Beth El and her interests include Mahjong, reading and being a homemaker. Her father, David Kocen; her mother, Rachel Kocen; and all her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Norley Sirott; her daughter, Rae Sirott and husband, David Cohen of Sickleville, N.J. Services will be Monday, September 30, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, with Rabbi Sidney Zimelman officiating. Memorials may be made to Temple Beth El.

SPEARS
Betty Ann "Betsy" Spears, 46, of Virginia Beach, passed away September 26, 2002 in her residence after a long and heroic battle with cancer. Betsy Spears, the youngest of four children, was born November 24, 1955 in Richmond, Virginia to Betty Irma and the late Lester Clay Asbury. She graduated from Virginia Tech, class of 1979 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture. Mrs. Spears retired earlier this year, after 22 years of teaching in Virginia Schools. For the last 18 years, she was a well-loved and respected horticulture instructor at Norfolk Technical Vocational Center. She developed and directed an outstanding Arbor/Environmental Career Day in conjunction with the Virginia Cooperative Extension of Virginia Tech and the Norfolk Arbor Day Committee. She served on the Virginia Department of Education Horticulture Curriculum Committee, won the 1998 to 1999 Rufus Beamer Career and Technical Education Award for excellence in teaching and was elected Teacher of the Year at Norfolk Technical Vocational Center 1993 to 1994. Betsy enjoyed gardening and was well-known in the Norfolk area for her beautiful bedding plants in the spring and the spectacular poinsettia plants that she and her students cultivated every Christmas season. She was an aerobics instructor at the Virginia Beach Recreational Center (Bayside & Great Neck), a member of Baylake United Methodist Church and Cape Story by the Sea Civic Association. She was a loving wife and mother who went out of her way to help others. She will be missed by all that knew her and will live in our hearts. Survivors include her loving husband of 17 years, Robert Laurence Spears; a son, Robert Clay "Bobby" Spears of Virginia Beach; her mother, Betty Irma Asbury; a sister, Brenda Kay Heath; a brother, Thomas Pierce Asbury and his wife, Cecelia all of Richmond, Virginia. Also surviving are her loving-in-laws, Yvette Spears, Larry and Shelley Spears, Ric and Susan Spears and Scott Spears. Her brother, Jerry Lester Asbury, preceded her in death. A church service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2002 at Baylake United Methodist Church, 4300 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, by Reverend Ted David and Reverend Michelle Hall. The family will receive friends at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel this afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m.

STATON
Ann Eck Staton, 72, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2002 in Tampa, Fla. A native of Richmond and a resident of Tampa since 1977, she retired from the state of Virginia in 1990. She is survived by her loving children, her daughter, Bonnie E. Lovell of Tampa, Fla.; and her son, Thomas M. Eck Jr. of Flowery Branch, Ga.; her grandchildren, Catherine Ann Hastings of Atlanta, Ga., D. Carter Hastings Jr. of Tampa, Fla. and Duncan L. Eck and Thomas M. Eck III of Flowery Branch, Ga. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave. Interment private.

THOMPSON
Rachael Nero Thompson, formerly of Richmond (Fulton), died September 23, 2002 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Surviving are her husband, Verdell Thompson; her mother, Shirley P. Benjamin; other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" Street. Graveside services will be held Monday 12 noon at Evergreen Cemetery. Rev. Richard Tucker officiating.

TONEY
Herbert L. Toney Jr., age 77, of Spotsylvania, died Sunday, September 22, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital. He was a native of Hopewell. He retired in 1980 from Quantico as supervisor of the maintenance department after 35 years. He was Navy veteran having served in WWII, and a member of Massaponax Baptist Church. He was a member of V.F.W. and Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge No. 4. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn P. Toney; two sons, two daughters and five granddaughters. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Covenant Funeral Service Fredericksburg Chapel with Rev. John Edmonds officiating. Burial will follow in Confederate Cemetery, Spotsylvania. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Massaponax Baptist Church, 5101 Massaponax Church Rd., Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.

TURNER
Jane J. Turner, 88, formerly of Newport News, died September 26, 2002 in Tarboro, N.C. Born in Clinton, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Oscar S. Jones and Blanche Griffiths Jones. She was married to Lt. Col. Harry Turner for 57 years prior to his death in March of 2002. She was an accomplished violinist and pianist who was active in amateur theater throughout her life. Her musical career included playing the violin with the Utica Symphony in New York, piano accompanist for a dance studio in Hollywood, Calif.; and she sometimes served as the piano accompanist for the Little Theater Group in Newport News. She was a member of the Air Force Officer Wive's Club in Detroit, Honolulu and Washington, D.C., where she wrote, produced and directed shows for entertainment at the Officer's Club. She was of the Methodist faith. Jane leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter and son-in-law, Sheila T. Lanier and Ronald C. Lanier of Whitakers. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 29, 2002, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, Va. Graveside services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, with the Rev. William R. Kyle Jr. officiating.

TURNER
Theodore Roy "Ted" Turner, 80, Charlottesville artist and retired art professor, died Thursday, September 26, 2002 at home. Born January 10, 1922 in Fredericks Hall, Virginia, Ted was the son of Charles W. and Edna Turner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally. He is survived by three daughters, Suzanna Turner of Palmyra, Va., Vicki Morgan of McLean, Va. and Jane Quinn of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Sara Morgan, Elizabeth Morgan, Christopher Morgan, Hunter Quinn, Cameron Quinn, Reid Quinn and Nicky Quinn. Ted graduated from the Virginia Professional Institute (College of William and Mary) with a B.F.A. in 1943. He then served in the U.S. Navy for three years. He went to earn his M.A. in Art History at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Upon graduation, he began his teaching career at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he taught medieval architecture. In 1952 he moved to Charlottesville, Va., where he taught printmaking, watercolors, sculpture, art history and photography at the University of Virginia. He taught there for 33 years until his retirement in 1985. Devoted to his painting, his work was shown in exhibitions which included: (Group and One Man) Virginia Museum, Chrysler Museum; Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts; Montgomery Museum; Babcock Gallery, New York; New York University; William and Mary College; Brooklyn Museum; Philadelphia Print Club; Peridot Gallery, New York; Dyansen Gallery, New York; and University of Virginia. Ted was also represented in public collections such as the Virginia Museum, University of Virginia, Washington and Lee University, Brown University, Dartmouth College, Roanoke Museum, Mary Baldwin College, Mississippi Art Association, Hollins College, New York Public Library, Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond and the James Center in Richmond. His many awards included a Certificate of Distinction in Watercolor at the Virginia Museum in 1959 and first prize in watercolor and an award for his work in oil at the Chrysler Museum in 1962 and 1966 respectively. In 1955 and 1956 he earned watercolor awards at Virginia Intermont College and a Purchase Award at the National Watercolor Exhibition, Mississippi Art Association in 1961. In 1982 he was awarded a Purchase Award at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York. He won a Painting Award in York, Pennsylvania in 1990 and again in 1997 at York he won an Award of Excellence for his acrylic. In 1999 at Hampton Bay Days he was awarded for his painting in oil. Ted once said, "Some people say artists paint for a lack of something vital in their lives. I paint because I am happiest when I am painting. I can't think of anything else to do that is nearly as interesting. That is really what its all about." A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 1 p.m. at Monticello Memory Gardens, Monticello Mountain. The Reverend Margaret Via will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the ceremony at Ted's home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in his name to the McGuffey Art Center, 201 Second St., S.W., Charlottesville, Va. 22902 or to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

ZIEGLER
Ralph Wenger Ziegler, 85, a resident of 9638 Mount Zion Road, Linville, died September 26, 2002 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ziegler was born on January 22, 1917 in Columbiana, Ohio and was the son of the late William A. and Mattie Wenger Ziegler. He had lived in the Singers Glen area for the past 40 years. He was a pastor, serving most recently in the Northern District of the Mennonite Conference. He was a church planner for the First Mennonite Church in Richmond, Virginia. On January 22, 1940, he married the former Osie Ola Hertzler who survives. Surviving are two sons, Donald Wesley Ziegler, Akron, Pennsylvania and Ralph Gordon Ziegler, Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Audrey Joyce Guardacosta, Harrisonburg; one sister, one brother, eight grandchildren, one stepgranddaughter and one great-granddaughter. Mr. Ziegler was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Ziegler and Mildred Louise Owen; and a sister. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Park View Mennonite Church, with Pastors Loren Horst, Howard Miller, Tom Buckingham and Paul T. Yoder officiating. Burial will follow at Lindale Mennonite Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Mennonite Board of Missions, 901 Parkwood Drive, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22802.
