Smithers; one daughter, Cresenda Rose; three brothers, James Smithers of West Germany, George and Robert Smithers of Richmond; sister, Beverly A. McDuffie of Richmond; four nieces, one nephew, three great-nephews, one great-niece; two loving aunts, Gloria Colbert and Leah Gordon; one uncle, Leroy Smithers; two sisters-in-law, Alfreda and Carolyn Smithers; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends, devoted, Viola Anderson. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets, where funeral services will be held Friday, February 2, 1 p.m. Dr. Marquis Egerton officiating. Interment Maury Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the funeral home Friday, 12:30 p.m.

Miss Mary E. Sumner, retired Virginia Union University staff person, departed this life January 28, 2001. The staff of the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home is serving her family.

SWINSON
Miss Carlene E. Swinson of Richmond departed this life Monday, January 29, 2001. She is survived by three sisters, Phyllis S. Travis, Joyce A. Rivers and Yvonne S. Jewell; one brother, Carl Swinson Jr.; one uncle, Douglas Whitehead; two aunts, Mamie Nelson and Matilda Anderson; three brothers-in-law, Alvin R. Travis, Leroy Rivers and Fletcher L. Jewell Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets, where funeral services will be held Friday, February 2, 11 a.m. Mr. Sherman Walker officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the funeral home Friday, 10:30 a.m.

Departed this life January 31, 2001, Mr. Anthony J. Taylor of Richmond. Remains rest at the Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" St. Services to be announced.

TAYLOR
Shirley R. Taylor, age 63, of Ruther Glen, departed this life Wednesday, January 31, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Taylor. Survivors are two sons, James J. and Robert W. Taylor; four daughters, Theresa T. Hart, Wanda J. Taylor, Jessie T. Brown and Donna M. Stanley; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Brenda F. Mozingo. The family will receive friends at the B.W. White Funeral Home, Aylett, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Service 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church, Ruther Glen, Va.

TURNER
James V. Turner, age 29, died Saturday, January 27, 2001, in Augusta, Ga., beloved son of Leslie Turner and Jane Frye. Survived by two brothers, Robert and Mathew Turner; and also by his loving aunt, Cootsie Kerlin; and by his grandmothers, Gladys Bevins and Millicent Smedley. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 2, at 7 p.m. at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel.

WHITTAKER
Mr. John Franklin Whittaker, 74, of Ladysmith, died Monday, January 29, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Whittaker was the owner of Pioneer Produce in Fredericksburg and a World War II Navy veteran. He was the widower of Lillian Ayers Whittaker. Survivors include a daughter, Diane W. Corker of Ruther Glen; a son, Donald F. Whittaker of Keller, Texas; a devoted sister-in-law and a wonderful caregiver for our Mom and Dad for four years, Regina C. Martin; two sisters, Mrs. Polly Skinner of Woodford and Patricia Ketner of Ashland; a brother, Arthur D. Whittaker of Ashland; six grandchildren, Kathy, Frank and William Corker, Courtney and Trevor Whittaker and Celest Williams; four great-grandchildren, Katie, Lindsay and Dylan Williams and Courtney R. Whittaker Jr.; three nieces, Karen Bruce of Glen Allen, Robin Ann Gillian of Richmond and Tina Carter of Woodford; and three nephews, Michael Skinner of Montpelier, Douglas Whittaker of Ashland and Robert Ketner of California. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2001, in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Rev. Andrew Bullock officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bowling Green. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Lady Smith Vol. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 186, Ladysmith, Va. 22501.

WILSON
James M. Wilson, age 78, of South Hill, died Tuesday, January 30, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Mary Gee Wilson of the home; one son, William E. "Bill" Wilson of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Richard Kendall Wilson of Nashville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, James Berry Wilson and Raine Elizabeth Wilson, both of Richmond. A son, James M. Wilson Jr. preceded Mr. Wilson in death. Mr. Wilson was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 2, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Va., with interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Farrar Funeral Home, South Hill, on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The family requests memorial considerations be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4103 Monument Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23230-3818. YOCHAM
Elmer W. Yocham, 80, of Richmond, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at his residence. An Arkansas native, he was a son of the late Troy S. and Dorothy Weiher Yocham. Mr. Yocham and his late wife, Mabel, owned and operated the former Chuckwagon Restaurant on Jeff Davis Highway. He served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army. He is survived by two sisters, Shirley Harris of Texas and Vera Davis of Florida; a son, Bryan Troise of California; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Yocham, Mr. and Mrs. George Yocham, Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Yocham, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Yocham, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Yocham, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Yocham, all of Oklahoma; one grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Friday, February 2, 2001 at 3 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, with Rev. Carl Weaver officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights.

BALDWIN
Rev. Cornelius Mathew Baldwin departed this life August 13, 2001. He was born on October 26, 1932 in North Carolina to the late Mack and Nazzaree Baldwin. He is survived by his devoted wife, Deborah A. Baldwin; two daughters, Brenda L. Price and Eunice D. Baldwin; son, Anthony G. Baldwin; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Mrs. Evelyn B. Robinson; one uncle, George A. Taylor Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Eulogistic services will be held at Cedar Street Baptist Church, 2301 Cedar Street, with Rev. Keith Manuel, pastor of Gospel Baptist Church, officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.

BENNETT
Departed this life August 10, 2001, Authur Bennett. He is survived by his children's mother, Christine Bennett; two daughters, Sharee Waters and Andrea Bennett; and son, Andre Bennett; two grandsons, Da'Quan Waters and Da'Shawn Bennett, all of Richmond. Also left to mourn, father, Samuel J. Bennett Jr., Richmond; sister, Mary Ann Gunn of San Antonio, Texas; godmother, Gladys Broadway of Richmond; Kim Mann Slaughter, life-long friend, Richmond; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, one niece, caring friends and acquaintances; and he will be sadly missed by life partner, Tracy Braxton-Lamison. BENSON
Virginia Taylor Benson of Richmond went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 12, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Benson; two stepdaughters, Amy Robeson and Faye LaPrade; four grandchildren, Mary and Leslie Robeson and Beverly and Dennis LePrade; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Johnny Williford and William Turner; and one sister, Lillie Mae Duck. Mrs. Benson was a charter member of Meadowwood Church of God and was retired from Travelers Insurance. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Meadowwood Church of God. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Joseph Edward Breslin of Manasquan, N.J., formerly of Richmond, Va., died on Monday, August 13, 2001. Beloved husband of Eleanor (nee Maloney); devoted father of Joseph Edward Breslin, Thomas Francis Breslin and Mary Grace Heine; dear brother of Robert Breslin and Lillian Randall; loving grandfather of seven grandchildren. Memorial Mass at St. Denis Church, Manasquan, N.J. on Friday, August 17, at 9:30 a.m. Interment Calvary Cemetery Queens, N.Y. Cheatham; host of nieces, nephews and cousins; one sister-in-law, Pearl Cheatham; one brother-in-law, Curtis Jones; and other relatives and friends, among them, devoted Carl Alford. Alice Elizabeth Johnson Clarke of 3300 Kingsdale Road, Richmond, departed this life on Thursday, August 9, 2001, after a timely and lengthy illness. She was the oldest of four children born to the late Henry Johnson Sr. and Mamie Irene Robinson Johnson. She is survived by a caring and loving son, Derwin; one sister, Ruby J. Turner; two loving and devoted brothers, Henry and Robert T. Johnson; two aunts, Beulah J. Allen and Louise Robinson Bey; several nieces, several nephews, two sisters-in-law, Eva W. Clarke and Arlene M. Johnson (who was loving and devoted to Alice); two brothers-in-law, William H. and Joseph R. Clarke; one loving and special friend, Alma B. Watkins; one devoted and caring couple, Theodore and Ethel Crawley; innumerable cousins, among them one very special, Magnolia (Maggie) Patron; a caring and devoted care-giver, Brenda Taylor; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2001 at 11 a.m., First Baptist Church, Centralia, 2920 Kingsdale Road, Richmond, Va. Family and friends are requested to assemble at church 10:30 a.m. Remains will rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 1827 Hull Street, until day of service. DREWRY
Mary Drewry, age 96, a resident of the East Pavilion of Southampton Memorial Hospital, died August 11, 2001 in Franklin, Va. She is survived by two nephews, William Drewry Fuqua and his wife, Dianne of Carrollton, Ga., Dr. Edward Drewry Jervey and his wife, Thora of Radford, Va.; and a niece, Ann Porter Gridley Fisher of Fruitland Park, Fla. She was preceded in death by a nephew, Louis Paschal Jervey Jr. and survived by his wife, Ann of Franklin, Va. Also surviving are 12 great-nieces and nephews and 12 great-great-nieces and nephews. Miss Drewry was born in Capron, Va. October 21, 1904, the fifth daughter of James Emmett and Adelaide Darden Person Drewry. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James David Drewry and Irving Lassiter Drewry; and four sisters, Sally Darden Drewry Moss, Adelaide Esmond Drewry Jervey, Gladys Person Drewry Porter and Bertha Hope Drewry Fuqua. She received a B.S. degree from Madison College and attended summer sessions at R.P.I., Syracuse University, and the College of William and Mary. She was Girl Reserve Secretary with the YWCA in Newport News for one year, then returned to Capron, Va., where she served as postmaster for 13 years. She taught high school English for three years and was Visiting Teacher (School Social Worker) for 25 years in the Culpeper and Richmond, Va. Public School Systems. She retired in 1970. She was a life-long member of Capron United Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Pilot Club in Portsmouth in 1962, the Virginia Council on Social Welfare in 1975, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 15, at 9 a.m. at the Drewry Family Cemetery, Cedar View Road, Drewryville, Va., with her nephew, Dr. Edward D. Jervey, officiating. Wright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the Southampton County Historical Society, c/o Lynda Updike, 33335 Statesville Road, Newsoms, Va. 23874, or to a favorite charity.
