LUMPKIN
Robert Berkley Lumpkin, age 64, formerly of Cauthonsville, died September 18, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bailey Lumpkin; a sister, Lillian Lumpkin Williams; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Lucille Lumpkin Bourne; and two brothers, William Franklin and George Edward Lumpkin. Service will be at Upper King and Queen Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will be at the church one hour before service. Interment in church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Upper King and Queen Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Newtown, Va. 23126. Arrangements by B.W. White Funeral Home.

MASON
Mrs. Clara Hancock Mason, age 94, of the Masonic Home of Virginia, died Sunday, September 17, 2000, widower of James H. Mason. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Mildred Mason Brown of Richmond; two granddaughters, Patricia and her husband, David Thomas of Midlothian, Phyllis and her husband, Robert (Bob) Barker of West Linn, Ore. Mrs. Mason was a member of the Southminster Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Manchester Lodge #53 for over 53 years. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Masonic Home Chapel, 4101 Nine Mile Rd. Interment 3 p.m. Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Brookneal, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia, 4101 Nine Mile Rd., Richmond, Va. 23223.

POPE
John Blakely Pope III, age 80, of Richmond, died September 16, 2000 at McGuire VA Hospital. "So quiet was his approach that Heaven was unaware. A Glider Pilot had met his fate, and was now standing at the Heavenly Gate. 'How could this happen?' the Lord exclaimed. 'For unto Me is known all things.' The Glider Pilot's answer was, 'Sir, I came on Silent Wings.'" John was born on March 28, 1920 in Plainview, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Chemical Engineering. While in school, he joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi and Phi Lambda Upsilon honorary societies. Immediately following graduation, John worked for the Texas State Health Department. In response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps on January 8, 1942 and was trained as a Glider Pilot. Once his training was completed, John was sent to South Plains Army Air Field in Lubbock, Texas as a flight instructor. There he met Maxene Hignight, and they were married in Lubbock on September 2, 1943. In 1945, John transferred from active duty to the Officers Reserve Corps, serving until March 1980 when he retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Throughout his life John was very active in the community as a member of the National WWII Glider Pilots' Association and as a member of the American Legion. John is survived by his wife, Maxene; by his brother, Robert C. Pope and sister-in-law, Deedie Pope of Jackson (Miss.); and by his sister, Lucy Pope of Denver. He is also survived by his three children and their spouses: son, Blake Pope of Indianapolis; son, S. William (Bill) Pope and daughter-in-law, Sandra Pope of Midlothian; daughter, Constance Pope Goodman and her husband, Gary of Midlothian. Surviving grandchildren are Chris and John Goodman, Kimberly Pope Chandler and her husband, Scott, and Kelly Pope. John was predeceased by his parents, John Blakely Pope II and Alice Pope; and by his brother, James S. Pope. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 20 at the New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following organizations: New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 6415 Irongate Drive, Richmond, Va. 23234, 743-8163 or the American Cancer Society, 227-2345.

PRILLAMAN
Liezelle Webb Prillaman, age 88, widow of the late Phillip Ellis Prillaman Sr., died September 16, 2000. She was a resident of Heritage Oaks Retirement Community, Richmond, Va. Formerly of Martinsville, Va., she was a charter member of Collinsville Presbyterian Church and a retired employee of Bassett Walker Knitting Co. in Martinsville. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard W. Prillaman of Richmond, Va. and Phillip E. and Carolyn Prillaman of Warsaw, Va. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Denise Prillaman Garrett of Moseley, Va. and John William Prillaman of Austin, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, William Cole Garrett and Richard Tanner Garrett. Other survivors include sisters and brothers and their spouses, Betsy Guilliams, Estelle Akers, Cecil and Shirley Webb of Callaway, Va., Eva Hoy, Frances Stover, Nida Webb, Evelyn and Lee Jamison of Roanoke, Va., Anne Webb of Rocky Mount, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conduced at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at 2 p.m. Rev. Lee Jamison will officiate. Visitation one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to your favorite charity. Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Vearylant Rustin, 72, of Richmond, Va., died September 15, 2000 in Memorial Medical Hospital. She was a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Thomas Robinson; one sister, Gladys R. Lewis; and one brother, Sylvester M. Rustin. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 20 at 11 a.m. in Grove Avenue Baptist Church, 8701 Ridge Rd. Rev. Larry Posey officiating.

SMITH
Mrs. Elsie Green Smith, a life long resident of Richmond, entered into eternal rest September 17, 2000. Mrs. Smith was born Elsie Lorretto Green on February 13, 1912. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Smith, and is survived by three children, Ms. Patricia Smith Rochelle of Naples, Florida, Mrs. Wilma Smith Whitehill of Richmond, William E. Smith Jr. of Richmond; and her sister, Elizabeth Mayo of Richmond. Mrs. Smith was the beloved grandmother of five, the great-grandmother of 11, and the great-great-grandmother of two. A memorial service is planned for Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations may be made to Richmond Area ARC.

STANTON
Irene T. Stanton, age 76, died Sunday, September 17, 2000. She was a registered nurse and a member of the Brandermill Country Club Ladies Golf Association and the Church of The Epiphany. Survivors include her husband, Merritt S. (Bob) Stanton, Midlothian, Va.; daughter, Mary Carol Smith, Midlothian, Va.; sons, Merritt S. Stanton Jr., Apex, N.C., John T. Stanton, Hopewell, N.J.; grandchildren, Amy Lyn, Matthew S. and Stephanie R. Smith, Patrick M. and Kellie C. Stanton; and brother, John Trainor, Whitehall, N.Y. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of The Epiphany, 11000 Smoketree Dr. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Whitehall, N.Y.

She is survived by two sisters, Irene Bailey and Nannie Augusta Johnson; two brothers, Sullivan and Joseph Dejarnette; an array of special nieces, nephews, among them, Doris Scott Johnson (Rita) and cousins; two sisters-in-law and other relatives and friends. Mr. Leroy "Shad" Tinsley of 1713 Brookfield St. departed this life September 15, 2000. He is survived by his daughter, Lillian A. Adams (Everette); son, Leroy Anderson; ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; nieces nephews, among them devoted, Doris Gregory and James Minor Jr.; cousins, other relatives and friends. Departed this life September 15, 2000, Mrs. Sallie E. Turner of 700 S. Lombardy Street. She is survived by one daughter, Sarah J. Tyler Vaughan of 2502 Lambert Ave., formerly of Enfield, North Carolina, departed this life Sunday, September 17, 2000 at HealthSouth. He is survived by two sisters, Elner Bradley and Cassie M. Pittman; a brother, Ollie Vaughan; two sisters-in-law, Naomi Vaughan and Rosa Lee Vaughan; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 20 at 1 p.m. at the Reconciliation Church of God in Christ, 630 E. 16th St., where remains will lie in state at 12 noon. George Robert (Bob) Brown Jr. of Richmond died June 16, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Louise (Lou) Brown; his sons and their wives, George Robert Brown III and Shelia and David Garland Brown and Linda; daughter and her husband, Barbara Lee Dearmon and Jerry; grandchildren, Robert O'Neal Dearmon, Stephanie Brown Wingfield, LeeAnne Dearmon, Susan Brown Scheerer, Roy Edward Slaughter, George Robert Brown IV and Brandon David Brown; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Olivia, Katlin, Savannah, Drew, Sarah, Grayson and Isabelle. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends Sunday (today) 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and where services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. For many years, Mr. Brown was the owner and operator of Brown & Sons Citgo Service Station on Lakeside Avenue.

Mrs. Janie Southard Davis, 85, of Mechanicsville, widow of Charles William Davis, died Saturday, June 16, 2001. She is survived by four sisters, May Bowles, Maude Kirby, Ruth Farmer, and Katherine Dunn; and a brother, George Southard. Esther Martha Ondrovich Hamrick, age 85, of Richmond, passed on to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 13, 2001. She was the widow of Darrell Forrest Hamrick and is survived by her daughter Karen Sue Hamrick; two sisters, Matylda O. Rhoades and Natalie O. Steele; brother-in-law, Paul Steele and sister-in-law Iva Ondrovich; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Road. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 6 pm Sunday at the funeral home, where a funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, June 18, 2001.
