DOGGETT
Sissie Mae Doggett, 90, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston. Born on August 23, 1910, in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Lee Doggett and Martha Nathelia Moore. Miss Doggett worked as a nurse's assistant for Ralls Nursing Home for 33 years, then moved back to Boydton in May of 1976. Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Watkins Cooper Lyon Chapel in Clarksville with Rev. Edward Herzel officiating. Interment will follow in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Skipwith. Surviving are sisters, Nancy Naegler and Mary Lee Herzel, both of Morganton, N.C.; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday prior to the funeral at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home.

HATCHER
Kathleen Harmon "Kitty" Hatcher, 73, of Richmond, died Thursday, May 24, 2001. She was the widow of Robert E. Hatcher and is survived by her sisters, Virginia Gunter of Vass, N.C., and Mildred Spear of Carthage, N.C.; a brother, Robert Wayne Harmon of Hot Springs, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hatcher was a member of New Covenant Baptist Church, a past president of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Lupus Foundation, and a retired employee of the commonwealth of Virginia with 45 years of service. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Funeral service 1:30 p.m. Sunday in New Covenant Baptist Church, with interment in Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lupus Foundation of America Inc., Central Virginia Chapter, P.O. Box 25418, Richmond, Va. 23260-5418.

JONES
Justice E. Jones was born to Henry and Bessie Laws Jones on April 5, 1912 in Ottoman, Va. Justice was educated in the Lancaster County Public School System. He joined Hartswell Baptist Church in Ottoman and served on the trustee board. During World War II, Justice honorably served his country in the United States Army from August 28, 1942 to March 11, 1946 in the United States and in the South West Pacific. He was married to the late Virginia Ransom; although this union was not blessed with children, it was filled with love. Justice worked in many different facets throughout his lifetime. He first began working at the Level Green Farm in Ottoman, later working for the Ransome store as an attendant, and at the Naval Service Weapons Center in Dahlgren, Va., where he worked in the public works department. He shall always be remembered as a kind, easy going man, who was willing to do things for others. On Tuesday, May 22, 2001, Justice went home to be with the Lord. He leaves to cherish his memories: his nephew, Graham H. Jones and wife, Josephine of Tappahannock, Va.; one niece, Lucile Jackson and husband, Elmer; a host of other nieces, nephews; five sisters-in-law, Mary and Mabel Brown, Evelyn, Dorothy and Mattie Ransom, all of Baltimore, Md.; a host of cousins; three devoted friends, Artie Ransome, C.E. Saunders, and Eather Haynie. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, May 26, at Hartswell Baptist Church, Ottoman, Va.

JORDAN
Mrs. Elizabeth B. Jordan, born April 17, 1928, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001. She was the widow of her loving husband, Cabell C. Jordan Sr. and is survived by three children, Bonnie A. Barnes, Jacqueline L. Disse and her husband, Buck, Cabel C. Jordan Jr. and his wife, Lena; three grandchildren, Lisa D. Harris, Kathy D. Dmytryszyn, Edward L. Disse III; one stepgrandchild, Acie Bryant; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Harris, Kaitlyn Disse, Kanyon Dmytryszyn; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Aidan Dillon. Mrs. Jordan was a lifetime member of Pine Street Baptist Church and was retired from Philip Morris. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment Riverview Cemetery.

LOWERY
Michael Wayne Lowery, 43, of Sandston, departed this life Wednesday, May 23, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Marie Lowery; his daughter, Elizabeth; his son, Jeremy; his mother, Ada Norris; one brother, Stanley Lowery; three sisters, Diane Keenan and her husband, Mell (Butch), Sue Roberts and Tina Turner; also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Stanley R. Lowery. Mr. Lowery was a member of Mechanicsville Moose Lodge, an active member of the Sandston Youth Association and Babe Ruth Baseball. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and where a Moose service will be conducted 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Nelsen Chapel. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sandston Youth Association and Babe Ruth Baseball, or to the Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 911, Sandston, Va. 23150.

LYONS
William Keith (Bill) Lyons of Richmond passed away Friday, May 25, 2001 at his home after a long and courageous fight with a brain tumor. Bill was born on December 14, 1949 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C. and was the son of the late C. Keith Lyons and the late Elaine Stoops and Nelson Stoops, who preceded him in death. He was raised in South Charleston, W.Va. and attended West Virginia University. He continued to be an avid fan of the Mountaineers. Bill had a 29 year career in the pharmaceutical industry. His latest position was with Astra Zeneca in Richmond. Surviving are his wife, Corrie Hamilton Lyons; son, Matthew; and daughter, Sarah. He is also survived by his three sisters, Linda Renier, Margaret Batchelor and her husband, Ed and Marie Monroe and her husband, Rodney; along with their children. Bill is also survived by two stepbrothers, Jim and Nelson Stoops and their families. His extended family includes his three brothers-in-law, Skip, Billy and David Hamilton and their families. During his career he moved numerous times and called Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Richmond all home. Bill loved and was loved by his family and friends and was fondly known for his sense of humor and huge heart. He will be sorely missed by all. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 27 at 1 p.m. and a service to follow at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, Pouncey Tract Rd., Glen Allen, Va. Burial immediately following at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Duke University Medical Center, 047 Baker House, Box 3624, Durham, N.C. 27710; or MCV Massey Cancer Center Brain Tumor Research, P.O. Box 980037, Richmond, Va. 23298. These two institutions helped Bill maintain a productive and fulfilling life.

MASON
William Frank Mason Jr. of Pulaski and formerly of South Hill died May 24, 2001 in Pulaski, Va. Survived by two daughters, Jo Carol Cole of Pulaski and Bonnie Rector of Whitwell, Tenn.; a son, William Frank "Frankie" Mason III of Huntsville, Ala.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Graveside service Sunday at 2 p.m. in Round Hill Church Cemetery, Emporia. Visitation Saturday (tonight) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. McCUTCHEN
Lorene V. McCutchen, 80, of Fishersville, died Friday, May 25, 2001, in Staunton. She was born February 28, 1921, in Brunswick County, Va., a daughter of Willie Lorenzo and Ione Roberts Vaughan. During WWII she was a civilian employee at Camp Pickett, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Lindsey Vaughan; and three brothers, Jack Vaughan, Ralph Vaughan and Randolph Vaughan. Surviving are her husband, Carroll S. McCutchen; four daughters, Margaret L. Prior, Kathryn M. Mirabella, Alexis Crickenberger and Susan M. Smith; two brothers, Roger Vaughan and Murle Vaughan; six grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Fishersville United Methodist Church by Rev. James Harris and Rev. Larry Nolff. Interment will follow in Augusta Memorial Park, Waynesboro. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McDow Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fishersville United Methodist Church Ministries, P.O. MORRIS
Bobby G. Morris, age 61, of Amelia, died on May 24, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Rita A. Morris; sons, Bobby Jr. of Amelia and Freddie Young of North Carolina; daughters, Anna L. Cregger of Amelia and Angela G. Hughes of Crewe; brothers, Steve of West Virginia and Harry of California; sisters, Elizabeth Woolwine of West Virginia and Panzy Kanode of North Carolina; and 13 grandchildren. NEBLETT
Elizabeth Hester Deel Neblett, 90, of Richmond, widow of Sterling Neblett Sr., departed this life May 24, 2001, at Chippenham Hospital. Mrs. Neblett was born September 21, 1910, in Clintwood, Va. She is survived by one daughter, Sallie Baskerville Neblett; one son, Sterling Neblett Jr.; one sister, Lessie Deel Garber Sutherland; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a 56-year member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild, a longtime member of the Forest Hill Garden Club, and a volunteer at Chippenham Hospital for 17 years. Mrs. Neblett was a wonderful and gracious lady, beloved by everyone who knew her. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2001, at Maury Cemetery. Gather at the chapel Monday, May 28, at 12 noon to proceed to the cemetery. NORTON
Patricia Miller Norton, 75, of Richmond, formerly of Chicago, Ill., passed away May 24, 2001. She is survived by her son, Clifford C. Norton and his wife, Ann Lewis of Richmond; daughter, Susan Kinne and her husband, Donnelly of Los Altos, Calif.; also two grandchildren, Christopher A. and Craig M. Norton, both of Richmond. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. Interment private. A special thank you from the family to the First Floor ICU nurses at Johnston-Willis Hospital.

RAE
Vera Osterberg Rae, age 82, died May 24, 2001. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann Araway. She is survived by two sons, Carl B. Rae, Emporia, Richard H. Rae, Quinton; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be conducted (today) Saturday, 11 a.m., at the Aberdour Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Emporia. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Echols Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

ROBERTS
Meredith Ann Coffin Roberts of Levittown, N.Y., formerly of St. Alburns, N.Y., passed away May 24, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Roberts and is survived by her children, Candace Quispe, Kenneth Roberts, Robin Roberts, Tara Sangster and Kerri Kanack; sister, Cynthia Carr; and brother, Robert Coffin; and 14 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday (today) in Branch's Baptist Church. Friends and family to gather at Candace's house following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

SMITH
On Thursday, May 24, 2001, Elizabeth Oglesby "Betsy" Smith of Goochland County died at home after a long illness. Mrs. Smith moved from Southern Pines, N.C., to Roanoke, Va., to take a position as parish secretary at St. John's Episcopal Church. It was there that she met and married S. Strother Smith Jr. of Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. Smith celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last October. Mrs. Smith spent many years as an independent insurance agent, as manager of the S. Strother Smith Jr. Insurance Agency. Mrs. Smith was also known for her involvement in Planned Parenthood of Virginia, serving as the organization's president for several years. She was a member of the Country Club of Virginia, Woman's Club and the Tuckahoe Woman's Club. She was survived by her husband; and three children, The Rev. S. Strother Smith III of Abingdon, The Rev. Caroline Smith Parkinson of The Plains and Richard H. Smith II of Alexandria; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at St. James's Episcopal Church, Richmond, on Saturday at 11 a.m., with a private interment. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospice of Central Virginia, c/o Bon Secours Health Care Foundation, 5875 Bremo Rd., Ste. 710, Richmond, 23226.

THRIFT
Thelma Hopwood Thrift of Richmond, widow of Douglas Bowcock Thrift, died Friday, April 20, 2001 after a long illness. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

VAN
DEN BERG Milton H. van den Berg passed away May 23, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Katherine van den Berg of Maryland; one daughter, Kathy Malone of Maryland; two sons, Robert van den Berg of Maryland and James van den Berg of Richmond; and five grandchildren, including Leslie and Robyn van den Berg of Richmond. Private services will be held May 26, 2001, at Delaney Valley Memorial Gardens, Timonium, Md.

WELLFORD
Daniel Hendrickson Wellford died on May 25, 2001, with his family by his side at his home in Oxford, Md., after a long illness. He was born in Woodbury, N.J., on April 5, 1926, but was raised in Wilmington, Del. He served in the US Army for three years during World War II, after graduating from the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. Following the War, he received his B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the St. Anthony Club. He briefly worked for the DuPont Company as a chemist before being hired by Pan American World Airways. After 30 years of service, he retired as a 747 captain. An avid sailor and outdoorsman, he cruised extensively with his wife, the former Sandra Shettle, whom he married in 1976, and their dogs. He was a member of the Tred Avon Yacht Club, the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club and the Cruising Club of America. As well as his wife Sandy, he is survived by his children, Renee, Caroline, Daniel Jr. and Polly; a stepson, George; eight grandchildren, a great-granddaughter; his brother, Beverly; and sister, Virginia. A service of Christian burial will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Michaels, Md., on Tuesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. Interment will be at the Oxford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Talbot Special Riders, P.O. Box 391, Easton, Md. 21601.

WINN
Pauline P. Winn, 73, died May 24, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital. She is survived by her sons, John, 51, Dann, 48, and Keith, 39; her father, John P. Pajchak; her sisters, Phyllis P. Johnson and Helen P. Jones; and her grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
