Veronica T. Gresham, 51, departed this life Thursday, February 7, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Avalon Gresham; three sons, Alexander Jones and his fiancee, Lisa Gary, Deon Gresham and Christopher Austin; daughter, Latoya Austin; a host of in-laws and friends. The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2002 at Christian Fellowship Ministry, King William. Interment at the Escobrook Baptist Church Cemetery, Shacklefords. Viewing 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the J.K. Redmond Funeral Homes, Shacklefords.

HAMLETT
Mary Elizabeth T. Landrum Hamlett, 97, of Chesterfield, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at the Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. She is survived by six daughters, one son, twenty-six grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and twelve great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Friday, February 15, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Tom Lowman officiating. Friends and family that would like to attend the services should assemble at the graveside. E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, Colonial Heights is handling arrangements.

HARRIS
Emanuel B. "EB" Harris of Henrico, VDOT employee, died February 12, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy W. Harris; two daughters, Pamela and Patrice Harris; two grandchildren; parents, Emanuel and Nellie Harris; one brother, William R. Harris; two sisters, Mary Cotton and Althea Warren; mother-in-law, Frances E. Warren; four brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law; and a host of relatives and friends. Memorial services Saturday, February 16, 2 p.m., Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 8th Ave. and Masonic Lane.

HASTY
Carlton Edward Hasty, 75, of Colonial Heights, died on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Sebrell, Va. and was the son of the late Percy Lewis and Iola Mabel Denson Hasty. Mr. Hasty was a U.S. Navy and Marine Corps veteran having served in World War II and Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Marks Methodist Church in Petersburg, Blandford Masonic Lodge #3 A.F.& A.M., American Legion Post 284, DAV Post 47 of Petersburg and a former member of the Scottish Rite and former member of the Acca Temple Shrine. Mr. Hasty is survived by his wife, Janie B. Hasty; two sons, Charles E. Hasty and wife, Betsy P. Hasty of Midlothian and Harvey L. and wife, Sharon P. Hasty of Virginia Beach; a stepson, Carroll W. Aldridge of Richmond; two daughters, Carolyn K. and husband, Ralph Rowe of Richmond, Barbara Chesher of Colonial Heights; five grandchildren; two sisters, Iola H. Joyner of Franklin, Va. and Doris H. Bess of Courtland, Va. A graveside service will be Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 11 a.m. in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, with the Rev. Jerry Parker officiating. A Masonic service will be conducted at the graveside. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Blandford Lodge #3 and the American Legion Post 284.

Mrs. Virginia Newkirk (Gin) Johnson of Richmond departed this life Sunday, February 10, 2002. She is survived by her son, Bernard N. Johnson Jr.; two daughters Bernadette Johnson and Viola Branch; three grandchildren, Bernard L. Johnson, Eric L. Branch and Yvette Branch, two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Newkirk, Evelyn Lively, Willie Harris and Clara Dawson, several nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets, where funeral services will be held Friday, February 15, 1 p.m. Rev. L.B. Samuel, officiating. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. JONES
Donald E. Jones, 72, of Richmond, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Ethel A. Jones. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Jones Jennings; one son, Donald E. “Rick” Jones Jr. and his wife, Laura, all of Richmond. Also surviving are his sister, Thelma Jones Smith and her husband, Kenneth of Chesterfield; one brother, Horace O. Jones of Topping, Va.; four sisters-in-law, Edna Dillard and Dorothy Allen of Champlain, Va., Margaret Allen of Tappahannock, Va. and Eleanor Jones of Maryland; and three grandchildren, Gregory Jennings, Catherine and David Jones; also many loving nieces, nephews and friends. His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and where services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church Building Fund, 4210 Penick Rd., Richmond, Va. 23228 or the American Cancer Society. Mr. Jones was a retired superintendent with James Fox and Sons Contractors. He was also a lifetime member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, continuing his parents' commitment and services to the church.

JOYNES
Augustine Victoria Joynes, 92, died February 12, 2002 at her home in Warrenton. She was born November 29, 1909 in Capeville, Va. Mrs. Joynes attended Tidewater Institute in Chesapeake, graduating with honors. After marrying Henry W. Joynes, they resided in Philadelphia, Pa. and in Washington, D.C. before coming to Warrenton in 1938, where they were a vital part of the community. She was co-owner and vice president of the Joynes Funeral Home in Warrenton and Cheriton properties, a rental business. Her husband for more than 50 years, Henry W. Joynes died in 1984. Survivors include a son, George Woodson Joynes of Warrenton; three daughters, Mary L. Jackson of Owings Mills, Md., Barbara L. Joynes of Silver Spring, Md., and Lois J. Wysinger of Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 16 from 10:30 a.m. until services begin at noon in the First Baptist Church, Warrenton. The Rev. Matthew Zimmerman Jr. will officiate. Interment will be at the Warrenton Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Joynes Funeral Home, Warrenton.

KESTLE
Donna L. Kestle of Glen Allen died February 13, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Edward Kestle; her children, Abigail Kestle and Betty Eshbough; her sisters, Debbie Wyatt, Lisa Overstreet and Nancy Huestess; her brother, Sam Horton; and her grandchildren, Raylynn and John. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends Friday, 6 to 8 p.m., with a Christian Wake at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., St. Paul's Catholic Church. John W. King Jr., 49, of Haynesville, died Monday, February 11, 2002. He was a U.S. Marine Corp Sgt. for 13 years. Surviving are his parents, John W. King Sr. and Olive J. King, Haynesville; sisters, E. Jane King Frush, Newland, Alice V. Morris, Charlottesville; brother, Curtis Lee King, Richmond; uncle, Lawrence W. Smith. Memorial service 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Rainswood. Memorials to Veterans Memorial Fund, Totuskey Baptist Church, 3030 Lake Road, Lottsburg, Va. 22511.

LANDES
Rose Marie Landes, 85, widow of Frank C. Landes, died Thursday, February 14, 2002 in Dillwyn. Survivors are five children, Barbara Heifner of Dillwyn, Bruce Landes of Midlothian, Pamela Morris, Michael and Warren Landes, all of Fork Union; one sister and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until time of the service. Public viewing will begin 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment at a later date will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Fluvanna Co. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 96, Palmyra, Va. 22963.

LEAZER
Mark W. Leazer, 47, of Richmond, died February 10, 2002. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle "Dani" Leazer; father, Wayne I. Leazer of Minnesota; and mother, Jacquelyn S. Hutchins of Florida; three brothers, W. Paul of Nevada, Matthew W. of Colorado and Shawn W. Leazer of Florida; two sisters, Theresa L. Crowl of Virginia and Eva Maria Leazer of Oregon; and his special friend, Jeanne Allen. The family will receive friends 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Catholic Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be forwarded to Theresa L. Crowl, 9370 Crossover Dr., Mechanicsville, Va. 23116 for the establishment of an Education Fund for Mark's daughter, "Dani".

LUCY
Margaret Edwards Lucy of Richmond, with her family by her side, passed away to be with her Lord on February 14, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Bradford E. Lucy Sr.; daughter, Sandra G. Lucy; two sons, Bradford E. Lucy Jr. and John A. Lucy, all of Richmond; sister-in-law, Nan Grissom of Courtland, Va. Mrs. Lucy was an active member of Bon Air Baptist Church and a member of the John Mann Sunday School Class. She was actively involved with the Relay for Life and the Hawthorne Cancer Resource Center. She was a wonderful wife, incredible mother and loving friend, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. A graveside service will be held Saturday 11 a.m. at Dale Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Bon Air Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Hawthorne Cancer Resource Center, 1459 Johnston-Willis Dr., Richmond, Va. 23235.

MATTOX
Joe Earley Mattox Sr. was born in Glade Hill, Virginia (Franklin County), July 30, 1935, the first born of 11 siblings to Earley Henry (Boy) and Minnie Francis Hughes Mattox (both deceased). He attended both elementary and secondary schools in Franklin County, Virginia and graduated from Franklin County Training School, Rocky Mount, Virginia in 1955. Joe received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia in 1972, and studied further in the area of counseling at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia. Born and raised in a Christian home, he was the son of a Primitive Baptist Minister. He remained a member of Sweet Union Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia until he departed this life. From 1953 to 1959, Joe served in the U. S. Navy. He traveled extensively and acquired skills to assist him in seeking success in his personal life and future careers. On August 20, 1958, in Union Hall, Virginia (Franklin County), he married Rachel C. Edwards and from this union three sons were born, Joe Earley Jr., Cullen Littell and Ivan Obra Sr. Survivors include a loving and devoted wife, Rachel E. Mattox; three loving and devoted sons, Joe Earley Mattox Jr. (Richmond, Va.), Cullen Littell Mattox (Manhattan, N.Y.) and Ivan Obra Mattox Sr. (Maidens, Va.); two loving and devoted daughters-in-law, Octavia Mattox (Richmond, Va.) and Janice Mattox (Maidens, Va.); four grandsons, Jamar, Ivan Jr., Nathan and Cordell; two granddaughters, Ashley and Joniqua; eight brothers, George (Louise), Jim, Bill (Joan), Paul (Lillie), Donnie (Freda), Bobby B. (Debra Faye), all of Rocky Mount, Va., Frankie (Ethel Mae) of Oakland, Calif., Bob A. (Jennifer) of Wirtz, Va.; two sisters, Frances (Curtis) Clayborne and Debra (Richard) Hopkins, both of Rocky Mount, Va.; one aunt, Julia Mack of Rocky Mount, Va.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Virginia Edwards of Pittsburgh, Pa., Fannie Preston and Joseph (companion, Cecelia) Edwards of Rocky Mount, Va., Dewell (Hilda) Edwards and Benjamin (Teretta) Edwards of Orlando, Fla., Elder Elbert (Virginia) Edwards of Union Hall, Va., Velather (Ellerson) Weaver of Lafayette, Calif.; a special uncle, Mr. Edward S. Edwards of Rocky Mount, Va.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, among whom were especially dear to him, Brenty, Tyrell and Tiffany Smith of Long Island, N.Y. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Coburn Chapel on the Virginia Union University Campus. MAYHEW
Marian Nicole Mayhew departed this life on Sunday, February 10, 2002. She was born on September 29, 1919 to the late Angelina and Steven Sanders in Trinidad and Tobago. She was predeceased by her husband, Irving Mayhew. She is survived by four devoted sons, Michael, Rudolph, Kenneth Mayhew and Andrew McDonald ; three daughters-in-law Miriam, Daphne and Patricia Mayhew; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Ursula Denehy; sister-in-law; Enid Sanderson; a host of surrogate children; nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave., where family will receive friends Friday (tonight) 6-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday 1 p.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1415 Perry Street. Tony L. (T.J.) McGill Jr., 23, of Richmond, passed away Monday, February 11, 2002. He is survived by his father, Tony L. McGill Sr. and wife, Deborah; his mother, Charlise Singletary Blunt; his children, Tony III, Taryn and Noah; brothers and sister, Don and Dana Philpy and Austin; beloved grandparents, relatives and friends.
