MURDOCK
Carl Woodson Murdock Sr., 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather (Beebo), of Richmond, died at his home February 13, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Zilla Murdock; son, Carl Murdock Jr. and his wife, Jeanne; three daughters, Diane Smith, Nancy Murdock and Betsy Shores and her husband, Gene; 23 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. Woody was a member of Brookland United Methodist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Brookland United Methodist Church.

NOWELL
Addie C. Nowell, 84, of Surry, Va., passed away February 13, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Norman K. Nowell; daughter, Gayle Nowell Vergara and her husband, James; son, Richard Kenneth Nowell; sisters, Edith Hartmann and Gertrude Critcher. The family will receive friends at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10), from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment in Sunset Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Surry Co. Rescue Squad, 45 School St., P.O. Box 233, Surry, Va. 23883.

POTTS
Roberta Bowles Potts, 85, born in Petersburg and a long-time resident of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at Lucy Corr Village. Mrs. Potts was the daughter of the late Delia and John Bowles. She was the Charles of the Ritz representative and Cosmetic Department manager for Miller & Rhoads' Willow Lawn store for 22 years. Always active, she was a member of First Baptist Church, the Monument Ave. Crest Garden Club, a watercolor artist, couture seamstress and avid gardener. Mrs. Potts is survived by a son, Herbert L. Potts Jr. and daughter-in-law, Tammy Potts of Hopewell; a daughter, June Potts Rayfield and son-in-law, Charles Rayfield of Midlothian; a sister, Lillian Darter of St. Clare Shores, Mich.; a brother, John E. Bowles of Petersburg; a grandson, Jim Potts of Sunrise, Fla.; great-grandson, James; five nieces and nephews, Cheryl Hicks, Barbara Williamson and Gregory Faison, all of Michigan, John Bowles of Colonial Heights and Mark Bowles of Chesterfield. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2002 with the Rev. Dr. Philip L. Cumbia officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cat Adoption and Rescue Efforts, www.care-cats.org.

PROFFITT
John Atkins Proffitt Jr. of Halifax died Wednesday, February 13, 2002. The son of John A. Proffitt, M.D. and Lucille Gilman Proffitt, Mr. Proffitt was born in Richmond, Virginia, March 15, 1925. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Nancy Dance Proffitt. He completed an undergraduate degree at The University of Richmond and a Master's Degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne during WWII. Mr. Proffitt is also survived by his two daughters, Pamela P. McElrath of Richmond and Susan P. Powell of Franklin; one sister, Beverly Ann Proffitt; three grandsons, Bryce H. Powell, Jonathan R. Powell and William P.S. McElrath. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 16 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 800 N. Main Street, South Boston, Virginia. RANSON
John E. Ranson Sr., 70, of Dillwyn, died February 13, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Ruby P. Ranson; two sons, John E. "Chet" Ranson Jr. of Farmville; Thomas W. Ransom and wife, Betty Ruth of Enonville; three grandchildren, Bradford Ranson, William Boyers and Buffy Boyers; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Murphy; three brothers, Gilmore Ranson of South Carolina; Lyle Ranson of Ohio and Garland Ranson of Spout Springs. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home.

RICKS
Virginia T. Ricks, 81, widow of William B. Ricks, passed away February 14, 2002 at ManorCare Stratford Hall. She is survived by a great-nephew, Conrad Wood of Tallahassee, Fla. Mrs. Ricks was a long-time member of Ginter Park United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ginter Park UMC. Arrangements by Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel.

SCHOOF
Adele G. Schoof of Albany, New York died peacefully February 13, 2002. Widow of William P. Schoof, she is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, William G. and Mimi Schoof of Midlothian, Va. and Frank and Patti Schoof of Albany, N.Y.; daughter, Lois Dascher of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; four grandchildren, Melanie Adele and William Malone Schoof of Richmond, Va. and Debra Knight and Norman Dascher Jr. of Albany, N.Y. Born on Christmas Day 1908, Del was a lover of life, a businesswoman and entrepreneur far ahead of her time. Funeral arrangements by Keenan Funeral Home, Albany, N.Y. SHAW
James R. "Jimmy" Shaw of Richmond departed this life February 9, 2002. He is survived by his devoted companion, Elizabeth J. Redd; son, Edwin Shaw; daughter, Bernetta Conway; brother, Ernest Shaw (Edith), aunt, Leslie Farrow; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. His remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, where his family will receive friends Saturday 10 a.m. and where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Shaw was retired from Philip Morris, Inc. after 25 years of service.

Lonnie S. "Dixie" Southerland departed this life on February 12, 2002 at Chippenham Manor Nursing Home. He is survived by his daughter, Vanessa Johnson; son-in-law, Edward Johnson of Lake Village, Ark.; a devoted aunt, Florence S. Rogers of Richmond; a host of cousins, one devoted cousin, LaCretia Rogers; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 North 25th St. Remains will lie in state Saturday 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 4401 Hobbs La., where funeral services will be held 12 noon. Rev. Ronald C. STANLEY
Roxie Meadows Mawyer Stanley, 80, passed into paradise on February 14, 2002 to be with God and her husband, William Daniel Stanley. Mrs. Stanley, originally of North Garden, Va., has been a long time resident of Glen Allen. She is survived by her son, Dennis D. Stanley and his wife, Brenda Bickerstaff-Stanley of Rockville, Va.; two grandsons, Robert Daniel and Christopher James; two sisters, Gladys M. Walker and Hilda M. Martin; and one brother, Duval M. Mawyer. Roxie was a faithful and loving member of Biltmore Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., Friday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Biltmore Baptist Church, 1300 New York Ave., Glen Allen. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park.

STEIN
Arline F. Stein, 87, loving mother to Gil TenHoeve of Westwood, N.J. and Paula F. Stein of Manakin-Sabot entered God's loving graces on Sunday, February 10, 2002. She is also survived by a son-in-law, Allen; two grandchildren, Christine Elyse TenHoeve and A.J. TenHoeve; stepdaughter, Louise Petro; nieces, Regina Deer of Vermont, Dorothy Averna of New Jersey, Helen Breda of Vermont; and a nephew, Robert Murphy of New Jersey. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Saturday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to FLAG (For the Love of Animals in Goochland), P.O. Box 115, Manakin-Sabot, Va. 23103. She had a tremendous love for animals and adopted her loving dog, Renee, from FLAG.

THOMAS
Dwayne "Craig" Thomas, age 39 years, of Marydel, Delaware, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002. Mr. Thomas was a machinist for Kraft Foods in Dover, Delaware. He was a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge and the Delaware Street Rod Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Sampson Thomas of Marydel, Del.; one step-son, Justin and step-daughters, Brittney and Danielle; his father, Eldon C. Thomas; nieces and nephews, Haley, Hannah, Jacob and Jesse; cousins, Mike and Jeana Williams of Bumpass, Va.; and many aunts and uncles. Friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, February 16, 2002 at the Faries Funeral Home, 1250 South Governors Ave. Dover, Delaware. Services will be in the J T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 West Hundred Rd., Chester, Va. 23831, where friends may call Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside service will be Monday, February 18, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Bermuda Memorial Park, Chester, Virginia.

TUCKER
Leon E. Tucker Sr., age 84, of Mechanicsville, passed away February 14, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Louise Borkey Tucker; son, Leon E. Tucker Jr. of Danville, Va.; stepdaughter, Marie Marshall; and stepson, E. Ray Bowers Jr. of Richmond; sisters, Edna Eacho of Richmond, Blanche Mathews of Richmond; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was a WWII Navy veteran and retiree of Pinkerton Tobacco Co. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services will be held at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Hanover Courthouse Rd., Hanover, Va. on Saturday February 16 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please forward donations to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, General Budget Fund.

VESSELS
Departed this life February 6, 2002 in Washington, D.C., Lucy Blanche Vessels, formerly of King William County, Va. She is survived by one son, Robert E. Vessels Jr.; two daughters, Diane M. Nelson and Robbin L. Roberts; three sisters, Louise Johnson, Elva Bowler and Anne Berkeley; five, grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church, Aylett, Va. Rev. Robert D. Brown, officiating. Interment church cemetery. WALLACE
Eleanor Wallace, with her family at her side, passed away at her home on Tuesday, February 12, 2002. Mrs. Wallace was born Eleanor Eva Sompel in Dupont, Pa. on November 13, 1925. Her husband, David Price Wallace, whom she married on December 21, 1946 in Bennettsville, S.C., survives her. She is also survived by her four children and their families, Debbie and Sid Porter of Greensboro, N.C.; Davette and Charles Bent of Rockville, Va., David S. and Priscilla Wallace of Richmond, Va., and Johnny and Debra Wallace of Darlington, S.C. She was blessed with 16 grandchildren, Stephen Burton Jr., Wendy Porter, Miles Burton, Adrian Burton, Alexsis Wallace, Keith Figgs, Michelle Porter, Rebecca Porter, Leslie Wallace, Lisa Wallace, Justin Wallace, Sean Wallace, Brian Wallace, Emily Wallace, Ashlee Wallace and David Wallace; and with five great-grandchildren, Brittany Figgs, Hadyn Porter, Miles Burton Jr., Alexsis Wallace Jr. and Gavin Burton. Mrs. Wallace was a registered nurse. She served in leadership roles for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, was a longtime member of the Huntington Garden Club and Huntington Civic Association, a charter member of the Hungary Creek Swim Club. As member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, she served as Eucharistic Minister and was a member of Village Varsity. She will rest at Bennett's West Broad Street Chapel where her family will receive friends in a celebration of her life from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, February 15. A Mass will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 16. Interment will be in Roseland, N.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Michael's Catholic Church Building Fund.

WARREN
Jean Mays Warren, 66, native and former resident of Richmond, Va., died Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at her residence in Dunedin, Fla. She was a member of the Dunedin Tennis Club, a member of A.S.A. Sorority, Radford College, and worked for the J.C. Penney Co. for over ten years. She moved to Florida in 1977 from Camp Lejeune, N.C. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, William C. Warren Jr.; two sons, William R. "Ray," Hollywood, Md. and Frederick J., Clearwater, Fla.; a daughter, Teresa L. "Terry" Trudell, Dunedin, Fla.; a sister, Anne Mays Magnusdal, Richmond, Va.; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at Curlew Hills Funeral Home Chapel, Palm Harbor, Florida.

WATSON
Maston Watson of Bourbon Lane departed this life Thursday, February 14, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

WELSHIMER
Dr. Herbert J. Welshimer, 81, of Richmond, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Welshimer; and is survived by three daughters, Dr. Kathleen Welshimer, Susan Welshimer Shaw and Nancy Welshimer; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 North Fifth Street. Entombment Hollywood Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Second Presbyterian Church restoration fund or the Alzheimer's Association.

WHEAT
Gladys (Smitty) Wheat, 80, of Chancellor's Village Fredericksburg, formerly of Dahlgren, Va., died Thursday, February 14, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg. Born in Orchid, Va., Mrs. Wheat began employment in 1942 at NSWC Dahlgren as a mathematician and retired there in 1976. She was a former member of the Bloodmobile from 1976 until 1992, a chairman of the memorial fund of the American Cancer Society in King George County and a graduate of Mary Washington College in 1942. Survived by her husband, Richard W. Wheat; three sisters, Catherine Shelton of Bumpass, Va., Ruth Smith of Mineral, Va. and Frances Woolfork of Huntington, W.Va. There will be no visitation. A graveside service to be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 16 in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Spotsylvania County, Va. The Rev. Norman Sifferman officiating. Expressions may by made to Hospice Support Care Inc., 2119 Lafayette Blvd., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401 or to charity of choice. Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, is handling arrangements.
