KAIN
Ruth B. Kain, 89, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord, February 1, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Kain; and is survived by her brother, Clifford H. Bivins Sr. and sister-in-law, Lillian G. Bivins; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Mrs. Kain retired from the Internal Revenue Service. She was kind, generous, and devoted to her nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday in Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the SPCA.

LANCASTER
Edna M. Lancaster, age 79, died January 31, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Fran Corle; and son, Stan Lancaster. A memorial service only will be held at Second Branch Baptist Church on Saturday, February 3, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.

MAGRUDER
Joyce Thomas Magruder, 80, of Richmond, passed away January 31, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Magruder. She is survived by her son, Charles Massie Magruder; a sister, Evelyn Nunnley; and a brother, Herbert Thomas. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, in particular, Anne Page Lowery. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Riverview Cemetery.

MARSHALL
John Edward Marshall, 66, of Chesterfield, died Thursday, February 1, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Marshall; his daughter, Tina Marshall-Beck; his son, Mark Marshall; his mother, Clara Marshall; two grandsons, Ashton and Spencer Beck. Mr. Marshall was retired from Preston Trucking Co. with 30 years service. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday., and where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

MAYER
James E. Mayer Sr., age 57, of Richmond, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Teresa; four children, James E. Jr., James E. III, Johnathan and Katie Mayer; one grandchild, Kristi; mother, Katie; one sister, Delaine; and one brother, Ronnie. All services will be private. Arrangements by K.L. McEWEN
Helen Gambrell McEwen, 88, of Ashland, died on Thursday, February 1, 2001. The family will receive friends at Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Ashland. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Mrs. McEwen, a native of Abbeville, S.C., graduated from Winthrop College in 1933 and received a master's degree from the Smith College School for Social Work in 1937. She was a social worker at the Family Service Agency in Philadelphia from 1937 to 1942, when she became the executive secretary of the Family and Child Service Agency in Winston-Salem, N.C., a post she held until 1946. She was the widow of Noble Ralph McEwen, a professor of psychology at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland from 1948 until his death in 1971. For 25 years, until 1981, Mrs. McEwen was the superintendent of children's ministries at Duncan Memorial Church. Beginning in 1973, she worked part time for Dr. J.B. Weems, the Ashland dentist, and after his death, for Dr. Gilda Ferguson. Mrs. McEwen is survived by her son, Charles of New York; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Jill of Lancaster, Pa.; and her grandchildren, Hannah and Daniel of Lancaster. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the children's library at Duncan Memorial Church, P.O. Box 247, Ashland, Va. 23005, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

MINOR
Departed this life January 30, 2001, Mrs. Janette Brown Minor of 5300 Glenside Dr., formerly of the 2300 block of Idlewood Ave. She is survived by her son, Anthony J. Minor; one aunt, Lucille B. Harvey; and other relatives and friends, among them, Norma Murray, Gloria Wyche and James H. Minor. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. Rev. James Ryan officiating. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home, 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

MOSS
Carrie Louise Goolsby Moss, 77, wife of James A. Moss Jr., died Tuesday, January 30, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital in South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Bessie Perkins Goolsby, a member of the Slate River Baptist Church in Buckingham County, Va., and attended Maple Creek Baptist Church in Greer, S.C. She was retired from the Bryant Division of Westinghouse in Bridgeport, Conn. Her survivors include her husband; two daughters, Shirley Moss Neighbors of Naugatuck, Conn., and Frances Moss Anderson of Greer, S.C.; one son, James E. Moss of Bridgeport, Conn.; sister-in-law, Odessa Branch of Farmville, Va.; two sons-in-law, William E. Neighbors of Naugatuck, Conn., Nathanial Anderson of Greer, S.C.; five grandchildren, two great- grandchildren. Visitation at the E.B. Allen Funeral Home, 706 Griffin Blvd., Farmville, Va., on Saturday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Slate River Baptist Church on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., with burial in the church cemetery.

MURRAY
Departed this life January 28, 2001, Mrs. Gruzel B. Murray, formerly of the 2100 block of Idlewood Ave. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Murray. She is survived by one sister, Mary Hayes; several nieces and nephews, among them, Rev. John Steed; and cousins and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Arthur Jones officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home, 12:45 p.m. Saturday.

PATTERSON
Mrs. Gwendolyn T. Patterson of 9402 Maji Dr., formerly of 2803 Edgewood Ave., died January 30, 2001. Surviving are her daughter, Helen B. Carter and her husband, Jerome T.; a son, James Thompson and his wife, Bertha S.; five grandchildren, Daniel W. Branch Jr., Gerri Carter Harris, Patricia Fergerson, Shelia Quash and Michael Thompson; eight great-grandchildren; host of cousins, two devoted, Sandra Shelton and Willieanna Wiggans; adopted daughter, Patricia Humphrey; other relatives and family friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. The family will receive friends Saturday 11 to 11:45 a.m. at First Union Baptist Church, 3510 Dill Rd., where funeral services will be held at 12 noon. Rev. Selwyn Baccus officiating. Entombment Forest Lawn Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Union Baptist Church Building Fund.

REEVES
Ora Ann Reeves, 83, of Richmond, died Thursday, February 1, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, M.B. Reeves. She was a long time employee of Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. and a member of Patterson Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William Douglas and Sally M. Reeves; one brother, Douglas Armfield; four sisters, Virginia Reeves, Ruby Scanlan, Blanche Mayo and Nancy Ayers. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Westhampton Memorial Park.

RICHARDSON
Clarke Trimyer Richardson Sr., 84, of Mathews, Va., passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2001. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was the owner and pharmacist of Richardson's Drug Store, Mathews. He is survived by his wife, Maria Vivo Richardson; two daughters, Genie R. Saunders and her husband, Curt of Hartfield, and Rosie R. Cooke and her husband, Bill of Mathews; a son, Clarke Trimyer Richardson Jr. and his wife, Debbie of Mathews; two sisters, Eugenia R. Murray and Mary R. Noah, both of Mathews; a brother, Charles Hudgins Richardson Sr. of Mathews; six grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren. The family will receive friends at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, on Saturday, February 3, 2001, from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be a graveside service held on Sunday, February 4, 2001, in Christchurch Cemetery, Mathews at 2 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, Mathews, Va. 23109 or Central United Methodist Church, P.O. SPROUSE
Louis A. Sprouse Sr. died at his home on February 1, 2001, after a four and a half year battle with congestive heart failure. Mr. Sprouse retired from Richmond Engineering Co. (RECO), with 42 years service and 35 years as supervisor. He was born October 5, 1915, in Free Union, Va., was the son of the late John M. Sprouse and Cora Lee Thomas Sprouse. He is survived by his wife, Bernice F. Sprouse; and son, Louis A. "Buddy" Sprouse and his wife, Cathy of Mechanicsville; one daughter, Linda L. Salyer of Center Cross, Va.; four grandchildren, Rhonda S. Reid and her husband, Jason of Buena Vista, Brenainn, Rebekka, and Mary Kebhinn Sprouse of Mechanicsville; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Samantha Reid of Buena Vista; one sister, Nellie S. Davis of Free Union. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, and where services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment Forest Lawn.

STRUMB
James (Lee) Strumb, 44, of Richmond, passed away January 31, 2001. He was preceded in death by his brother, David Michael Strumb. He is survived by two children, Joseph Lee Strumb and Misty Holmes; his mother, Barbara Ann Robertson Strumb; his father, James Thomas Strumb and stepmother, JoAnne M. Strumb; brother, Thomas Otho Strumb; and one sister, Lesley S. Richardson; and many nieces, nephews and devoted friends. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment private.

TAYLOR
Departed this life January 31, 2001, Mr. Anthony J. Taylor of 2010 Cleary Rd. He is survived by his father, Mr. Burrell Schools; sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Y. Hash and Ms. Charlene Taylor; brother-in-law, Mr. Paul Hash Jr.; one aunt, two uncles, four nieces, two nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" St. Funeral services will be held Friday (today) 1 p.m. at the Faith Landmarks Ministries, 8491 Chamberlayne Rd. Rev. Randy Gilbert, pastor. Rev. Cheryl Ivey- Green officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

TAYLOR
Blanche Word (Tiny) Taylor, 78, formerly of 210 Hospital St., died January 31, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Bobbie Riley; her son, Joseph Word; a host of grandchildren, among them one devoted, Kachelle Riley; several great-grand-children, a host of nieces and nephews; devoted son-in-law, Percy L. Riley Jr.; daughter-in-law, Rosa Word, a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Graveside services will be held Saturday, 12 noon, at Riverview Cemetery, Rev. Ronald C. Taylor officiating.

THOMAS
Died February 1, 2001, Gladys Conley Thomas, 82, widow of John Nathan Conley. She is survived by her daughter, Margret Lozella Conley Edwards; her son, James Nathan Conley; her brother, J.D. Simpson; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Westhampton Memorial Park.

TODD
George Washington Todd, age 99, died January 31, 2001. Immediate survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, George W. Todd Jr. and Carol S. Todd; grandsons, Charles G. and Clifford J. Todd; sisters, Garnett T. Tompkins and Katherine T. Harris; and brother, Albert J. Todd. Mr. Todd was the son of the late Walter Curry and Katie Peaco Todd. His wife of 58 years, Alice Trevvett Todd, died in 1996. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1920, serving as captain of C Company in the Corps of Cadets, and attended several colleges, including Virginia Tech, William and Mary, and the University of California, Berkeley. In World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Uvalde. He was employed by several companies, including Motor Boat Sales, Pinnell's, and Ward Motor Corp. He had been a member of numerous clubs and organizations including the Richmond Light Infantry Blues, the Virginia Boat Club, and the Virginia Power Boat Association, of which he was first commodore and held life membership, and Ginter Park Baptist Church. The family will receive at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., on Friday, February 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Saturday, February 3, at 2:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at Ginter Park Baptist Church at 3:30 p.m. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Ginter Park Baptist Church.

TURNER
Cathy D. Turner, of 2702 Martingale Rd., Colonial Heights, departed this life, January 31, 2001 at MCV Hospital. She is survived by seven children; her mother, Mae Williams; two sisters, three brothers; her grandmother, Bertha Prescott; a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 2611 Bells Rd. Rev. Terry O. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends attending services, assemble at the church Saturday, 10:30 a.m.
