Alva Wilder Smith, age 87, of Mechanicsville, widow of Rev. Procter A. Smith, died Friday, September 8, 2000. She is survived by three daughters, Dixie S. MacDonald and her husband, Iain MacDonald, Carol S. Longest and her husband, Edmond E. Longest of Mechanicsville, and June P. Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, E. Scott Longest, Stuart B. Longest, Douglas S. Longest and Charles L. Scott; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Edley W. Wilder; two sisters, Cassie W. Jones and Katherine W. Smith, all of Raleigh, N.C. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her close friend, Edith M. Gibbon. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 13 at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Interment in Signal Hill Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Hillcrest Baptist Church, 11342 Hillcrest Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23116 or Bon Secours Hospice, 5801 Bremo Rd., Richmond, Va. 23226.

SMITH
Mrs. Catherine E. Curley Smith of 900 Old Denny St., Richmond, died Saturday morning, September 9, 2000, at her residence. She is survived by her husband, Jessie O. Smith of Richmond; one son, Roger Z. Meade Sr. of Acworth, Ga.; one stepdaughter, Ms. Eleanor Smith of New York, N.Y.; one grandson, Roger Z. Meade Jr.; two granddaughters, Monique Bonner and Tia Meade; one great-grandson, Roger JaQuan Meade; one brother, Lawrence Curley (Dorothea) of Petersburg; one nephew, Milton Curley (Beverly) of Dinwiddie; three aunts, Alfreda James and Ruth Pride (Thomas), both of Petersburg and Ida Mae Garner of Stony Creek; one uncle, Norman Wilson (Evelyn) of New York; one aunt-in-law, Marion Wilson of New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Zetta B. Smith (Rev. Charles Smith) of New Haven, Conn., Elsie Pickett of North Carolina; two brothers-in-law, Roy Lee Smith of Connecticut, and Willie Smith of North Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at Little Zion Baptist Church, Carson, with Rev. Darrin Brandon officiating. Interment will be in Dinwiddie Memorial Park. The remains will lie in state at the church on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until the hour of service. Relatives and friends are asked to assemble at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Curley, 842 Fort Henry St., Petersburg at 11:45 a.m. Services under the direction of Tucker’s Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg. Please omit food.

SOMMER
Rosalie Coberly Smith Sommer, 81, of Racine, Wis., died Sunday, September 10, 2000, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Racine after several weeks of illness. She was a native of Petersburg and a graduate of Petersburg High School and Longwood College. She was the daughter of the late Vergil J. Coberly Sr. and Alice Dolan Coberly of Petersburg. She was predeceased by her first husband and father of her children, Robert Nelson Smith of Racine. She is survived by her husband, Frederick August Sommer of Racine; two daughters, Alice Smith Stirle of Racine and Barbara Ann Smith of Pocatello, Idaho; one son, James Coberly Smith of Los Angeles; a sister, Alice Coberly Hall of Atlanta; a brother, Vergil J. Coberly of Petersburg; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Interment will be in Racine on Friday, September 15, 2000.

STALL
Robert Jennings Stall Jr., age 82, of Fredericksburg, died September 9, 2000 at Robinson’s Adult Home in Spotsylvania. He was born in Columbia, S.C., and raised in Savannah, Ga. Mr. Stall graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering in June 1941. He was Manager of Industrial Development & Planning at Southern Railroad in Washington, D.C., until he retired in 1984. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during WWII and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain. Mr. Stall was a dedicated member of the Anglican Church. He married Helen Heyward Wilson of Atlanta, who survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Eleanor Sanford of Burgess; two sons, Robert J. Stall III of Norfolk and Walter Stall of Fredericksburg; and three grandchildren. A memorial graveside service will be held Saturday, September 23, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. at Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Ga. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Anglican Church.

TAYLOR
Jean Marie Taylor, age 82, died Sunday, September 10, 2000. She is survived by her husband, John A. Taylor Sr. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Forest Lawn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Building Fund, 8200 Woodman Rd., Richmond, Va. 23228.

TIPTON
John Talmadge Tipton, 57, of Meridian Avenue, Hopewell, died Friday, September 8, 2000 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg. He was born in Urbana, Ohio and had made his home in this area since 1961. Mr. Tipton was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #1472, Hopewell, a member of Prince George Golf Course and a supervisor at Miller Manufacturing, Inc., Richmond, Va. He was the son of the late Booth and Ruth Thompson Tipton and the widower of Prudence Marshall Tipton. Surviving are two sons, M. Troy Tipton and Adam Shane Tipton, both of Hopewell; two grandchildren, one sister, Vernell Wright of Chester; one brother, Donald Tipton of Prince George; and a friend, Alva Allen of Goochland. A Moose memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with visitation following until 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, September 14, 2000 at 10 a.m. in New Apostolic Church. Interment will be in Southlawn Memorial Gardens, Prince George, Va.

WALTERS
Mary Ward Briggs Walters, 83, of Locust Dale, Va. (Madison County), went peacefully to be with her Lord on September 10, 2000. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Denise Walters; three grandchildren, Sara Gordon Walters, John Howard Walters and Andrew Gordon Walters Jr.; and her goddaughter, Linda "Boo" Ingram. She leaves behind many who loved her. Graveside funeral services will be Wednesday, September 13, at 2 p.m. in the Graham Cemetery, Orange, Va. Rev. Forest Porter will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Preddy Funeral Chapel, 250 W. Main St., Orange, Va.

WILKERSON
Departed this life September 10, 2000, Mr. James C. (Brother and Jimmy) Wilkerson Jr. of 524 Chimborazo Blvd., formerly of 306 W. Duval St. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Funeral notice later.

WILKERSON
Infant Justin Michael Wilkerson died Sunday, September 10, 2000. He is survived by his parents, Colin L. Wilkerson and Erica Luce; two brothers, Cody and Austin; and a sister, Ashley; grandparents, Jerry Wilkerson and wife, Carolyn, Patricia and Michael Baggett and Linda and Robert Miller and Richard D. Luce. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Private graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Dale Memorial Park.

Mrs. Edith Shell Carter
September 13, 1922 - September 6, 2003
Mrs. Edith Shell Carter, age 80 of La Crosse, died Saturday September 6, 2003 in a Richmond Hospital. She was a retired cook at Wilson Brothers Barbecue.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Tolbert of La Crosse; two sons, James H. “Junior” Carter of South Hill and Ronnie D. Carter of Tidewater; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 2:00 P. M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department., 114 N. Brunswick Ave., South Hill, VA 23970 or Southside Rescue Squad, P. O. Mrs. Lena May Taylor Crowder
March 30, 1917 - October 14, 2003
Mrs. Lena May Crowder, age 86 of South Hill, died Monday, October 13, 2003 in a Richmond hospital. She was the widow of John Foster Crowder and is survived by her daughter and her husband Mary Taylor and Ronnie Tatum and her son and his wife Eddie and Nancy Crowder both of South Hill and her granddaughter Melissa Tatum of Richmond. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Thursday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Hill United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 105 Franklin Street, South Hill, VA 23970 or to the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department, 114 N. Brunswick Avenue, South Hill.

Mrs. Audrey Brett Callis
January 3, 1933 - October 14, 2003
Mrs. Audrey Brett Callis, age 70 of South Hill, died Tuesday, October 14, 2003 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was a volunteer at both CMH Community Hospice and the Concord Baptist Association. She was the widow of Douglas W. Callis and is survived by four daughters Rhina Jones of Bracey, Tamara Weston of Mechanicsville, Bonnie Graham of Dublin and Toni Lambert of Brodnax; two sister-in-laws Delores Callis of South Hill and Dot Randall of Baton Rouge, LA; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Thursday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. Mrs. Bessie Mae King
April 30, 1911 - September 12, 2003
Mrs. Bessie Mae King, 92, of Ebony, died Friday, September 12, 2003 in Brian Center in Lawrenceville. She was a homemaker and the widow of Emmett H. King. She is survived by two sisters; Katie Clary and Susie Writtenberry both of White Plains, a brother, Harry Edenbeck of Ebony, four nieces and six nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Prospect Cemetery, Ebony. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

Mr. John Baxter Cole
November 11, 1926 - September 11, 2003
John Baxter Cole, age 76 of La Crosse , died Thursday, September 11, 2003 at his residence. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Cole is survived by his wife Frances Lucy Cole; three brothers Edwin J. Cole of Franklinton, NC, Joseph Z. Cole of Smithfield and Herman W. Cole of La Crosse; three nephews and a niece. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at the Cole Family Cemetery near Bracey. Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Christopher Earl Okamoto
January 24, 1974 - September 10, 2003
Mr. Christopher Earl Okamoto, age 29 of Tanglewood Shores, Bracey, died Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at his residence. He was an employee of Clary Logging. He is survived by his mother and step father Rose and Tom Hamilton of Bracey; two sisters Sophie Wray and her husband Dean of Chester and Stephanie Okamoto of Richmond, two nieces Tegan and Taylor Wray and a special friend Toni Edwards of Bracey. Ms. Mary Lilly Hutchinson
August 19, 1920 - November 18, 2003
Mary Lilly Hutchinson, age 83 recently of Palmer Springs, VA and formerly of Northern Virginia, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She is survived by two daughters Mary Lou Morrison of Palmer Springs and Susan Gleim of Fort Lauderdale, FL; a son Lamuel McRae Lilly of Shelby, NC; three sisters Minnie Bell Clark of Daniels, W. Va., Melva Sheehand of Newark, Del. And Martha Harper of Albuquerque, New Mexico; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Saturday at Bethesda Baptist Church at Palmer Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 120 South Hill Avenue, South Hill, VA 23970. Mr. Hal Thomas Erwin
April 22, 1918 - November 18, 2003
Mr. Hal Thomas Erwin, age 85 of South Hill, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003 in a South Boston hospital. He was a retired farmer and a World War ll and Korean War Navy veteran.. He is survived by his wife Joan S. Erwin; four sons James H. Erwin and Samuel T. Erwin both of South Hill, Edward R. Erwin of Paulsbo, Washington and Richard K. Erwin of St. Stephens Church, VA; four daughters Betty K. Dayton of Dorothy, NJ, Elizabeth Mae Erwin of Philadelphia, PA, Diane Counseller of Kissemmee, FL and Donna Marie Erwin of South Hill; twenty one grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery at North View. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. July 10, 1935 - November 15, 2003
Mrs. Joanne Elliott Tanner, age 68 of Chase City, died Saturday, November 15, 2003. She was a retired businesswoman and pianist. She was predeceased by a daughter Michele Tanner and is survived by her husband Franklin W. Tanner; two daughters Johnna Beth Tanner of Mystic, Conn. and Patricia Bromley of Morrisville, Vermont; a son Paul C. Tanner of Groton, Conn.; a sister Roberta Lachapelle of Sunset Beach, NC. and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted this month in Connecticut and later in Chase City.
