Mrs. Mary Pauline Blanks Tucker, age 91 of Lawrenceville, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 in the W. S. Hundley Annex. She was the widow of Howard William Tucker and is survived by a daughter Carolyn Tucker Jones of South Hill; three sons David H. Tucker and wife Mollie, Wallace B. Tucker, Howard William Tucker, Jr. and wife Carolyn all of Lawrenceville and many wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren. Please omit flowers and consider your favorite charity for all memorial contributions. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at Crestview Memorial Park. Mrs. Carrie Call Wilson, age77 of Tanglewood Shores, Bracey, died Monday, May 11, 2009 at Community Memorial Healthcenter. She is survived by her husband, Ray Wilson, her daughter Nancy J. Walton both of Bracey; four sons Rick A. Wilson of Colorado, Michael R. Wilson of Chesterfield, Darren E. Wilson of Greensboro, NC and Nathan E. Wilson of Clarksville, her sister and brother Lou Call and James L. Call both of Newport News, thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Thursday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia at 3:00 P. M. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Lung Association of Virginia, 9221 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, Va. 23235, Attention: COPD Donation.

Ms. Mary Martin, 48, of Manson, NC died Sunday May 10, 2009 at her residence. She was a drywall finisher and is survived by two sons; Sean and Brian Martin, a daughter Christina Michelle Estes all of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. , two sisters; Janet and Ann Martin both of Boydton, Va., three brothers; David, Gary and Charles Martin all of Laytonsville, MD. and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 2709 South VA. Dare Trail, Nags Head, N.C. at 2:00 P.M.

Mr. James Albert Spence
February 18, 1946 - May 7, 2009
Mr. James Albert Spence, 63, of South Hill , died Thursday, May 7th 2009, at his residence.
He was a truck driver and is survived by his wife Peggy Carter Spence, four sisters; Maude Thomas, Ann Smith and Dean Smith all of LaCrosse and Mary Atkins of Blackstone, a brother Tom Spence and wife Juanita of LaCrosse.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 A.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home & Crematory.
Any memorial contributions to the family will be appreciated.

Mr. Walter Levon Folsom
October 18, 1947 - May 1, 2009
In remembrance of a kind and well respected man whose ever present unique humor lightened the hearts of all who knew him. Levon was born and raised in Fayetteville, NC, graduated from Fayetteville Senior High School in 1966. He served for two years in the
U.S. Marine Corp, and then returned home to complete and AAS degree in Business.
He served as the traffic manager of Kelly-Springfield Tire Plant in Fayetteville, NC for ten years, then pursued a career as a traffic consultant in the trucking industry. He operated his own business in Fayetteville, Greenville and Rocky Mount, NC before relocating to Lake Gaston in Bracey, VA.
Levon loved to fish! Anyone who visited him at Lake Gaston learned his “secret” fishing spots along with the newest of lures and techniques for bass fishing.
Levon Folsom is survived by his wife of almost forty years, Sharon Harrell Folsom; his son Christopher Shawn Folsom and wife Pamela Jean of Raleigh, NC; his father L. W. Folsom and wife Betty of Ft. White, FL.; a sister Sharon Stewart of Fayetteville, NC and a brother Richard Folsom and his wife Jan of Blount’s Creek, NC. He was preceded in death by a son Michael Keith Folsom in 2002 ; and his mother Nina Mae Folsom in 2004.
God has chosen to take this good and fine young man long before any who knew and loved him were prepared to see him go.
A Memorial service will be held in South Hill, VA. at the Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday , May 9, 2009.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made to the Walter Levon Folsom Memorial Fund at Massey Cancer Center, VCU, P.O. Box 980037, Richmond, VA. 23298-0037, for the research of Pancreatic Cancer.

Lieutenant Colonel William Henry "Bill" Todd
May 17, 1920 - April 29, 2009
William Henry “Bill” Todd, age 88 of South Hill, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. He was a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel and a private Pilot. He flew 30 bombing missions over Germany during World War ll and 50 missions in Korea. Among the many medals he was awarded was the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He was a Master Mason and a member of the American Legion. He was the widower of Nell Elizabeth Todd and is survived by his daughter and her husband Cecelia and Ernie Pyles of Demorest, GA; his brother Paul McGinnis and wife Dottie of Southbury, CT; two step grandchildren, three step great grandchildren , several nieces and nephews and a special lady Evelyn Webb of La Crosse. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Crestview Memorial Park with American Legion military Honors. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 422, South Hill, VA 23970.

Mr. Edwin Johnson Cole
November 21, 1924 - April 20, 2009
Mr. Edwin Johnson Cole, age 84 of La Crosse, died Monday, April 20, 2009 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. He was a retired employee of the former Lloyd Manufacturing Co. in South Hill and an Army veteran. He was the widower of Frances Kearney Cole and Elsie Lucy Cole and is survived by his daughter and her husband Susan and Jay Carter of Warrenton, NC; his son and his wife Kelly and Martha Cole of La Crosse; two brothers Herman W. Cole of Bracey and Joseph Z. Cole of Smithfield. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Thursday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in the Cole Family Cemetery near Bracey. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Kingswood United Methodist Church.

March 2, 1978 - April 15, 2009
Mr. Jeremy Chad Cramer, age 31 of La Crosse, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009. He was a Lineman for C. W. Wright Construction Co. in Chester. He is survived by his mother Elizabeth R. Simpson of La Crosse, his father James E. Stokes of Jacksonville, Florida, his daughter Camryn Cramer of South Hill; two sisters and their husbands Meagan and Ken Moody of La Crosse, Mindy and Timmy Aleman of Bracey; two brothers David Riley of Chesapeake and Jack Marland of Richmond; his maternal grandmother and step grandfather Gertrude and John J. Berryman, lll of Newport News and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Saturday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory followed by cremation.

Mrs. Gladys Gehander Maitland
April 18, 1934 - November 27, 2003
Mrs. Gladys G. Maitland, age 69, of La Crosse, VA and formerly of Toms River, NJ died November 27, 2003. Survived by two sons, Glenn C. Maitland of La Crosse, VA and Donald S. Maitland of Milton, FL; a sister Lillian Avalone of Matthews, NC; and a brother, Victor Gehander of Arizona. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home followed by a visitation until 8:30 p.m.

Mrs. Dorothy Strickler Kates, age 71 of Mechanicsville and formerly of Boydton, died Monday, June 8, 2009. She was a retired employee of Reynolds Metals Co. and graduated from a Richmond business and technical college. She is survived by her son Christopher A. Kates of Mechanicsville, her grandson Christopher Lee Kates of Chesterfield, a special cousin Shirley Gregory, a special nephew and niece Robbie and Linda Floyd all of Chase City. She was predeceased by her parents David Edgar and Bessie Mae Harris Strickler, her brother David Eugene Strickler and her sister Thelma Strickler Floyd. Dot was Salutatorian of her 1955 Boydton Senior Class, Cheerleader captain and Homecoming queen. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 P. M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with a graveside service at 2:00 P. M. Saturday at Crestview Memorial Park.

October 27, 1926 - June 2, 2009
Mr. C M “Curly” Caldwell, age 82 of South Hill, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 in a Petersburg hospital. He was a retired Master Sargent from the U. S. Army and a veteran of World War ll, Korea and Vietnam. He was also a retired manager of the Virginia Employment Commission South Hill office. He is survived by his wife Millicent Connell Caldwell; three daughters Doris Boever of Tampa, Fla., Peggy Vogler of Corpus Christi, Tex. And Carla Feller of Allen Park, Mich.; a son Keith Caldwell of Palm Bay, Fla.; two sisters Myrtle Harris of Pomaria, S.C. and Malda McLean of Ellenboro, N.C.; a brother Henry Caldwell of Troupe, Tex.; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; two step daughters Margaret Beard and Susan Walker both of Brodnax; three step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P. M. Thursday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory , followed by visitation. Mrs. Carrie Wright “Kizzie” Roberts, age 91 of South Hill, died Friday, May 29, 2009 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was the widow of Willie L. “Roy” Roberts and was predeceased by three sisters Bertie Payne, Amy Ellis and Lilly Hendrick and a brother Billy Wright and is survived by her son Tony Wayne Roberts of South Hill, two daughters Janice White of Raleigh, NC and June Allen of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, a sister Gracie Kidd of South Hill, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Monday at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

Mr. Donald Degen
October 24, 1922 - May 27, 2009
Mr. Donald Degen, age 86, of Palmer Springs/Boydton , died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at his residence. He was retired employee of the U.S. State Department for thirty five years, a B-17 Tail Gunner during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the husband of Thelma Harrison Degen.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter Donna D. Williams of Palmer Springs/Boydton, a son Dennis C. Degen of Frederick, MD, a half-sister Letha Stewart of Silver Springs, MD., five grandchildren Adam Kattaron, Donald N. Degen, Michael Degen, Leah Burris Murillo and Jessica Burris and three great granddaughters. Mr. Degen was predeceased by a son Brian Harrison Degen and a grandson Steven Anthony Degen. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 P.M. in Bethesda Baptist Church, Palmer Springs with interment in Crestview Memorial Park with American Legion military Honors. The family will receive friends Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation Inc., 30 E. 33rd St., New York, NY., 10016.
