Joey Lee Tiller
Joey Lee Tiller, son of Bonni Cummings and the late Walter Lee Tiller, died July 8 at his home.
He was born July 20, 1967. He was a graduate of Marshall High School in 1986. He enjoyed playing football, lifting weights, and working with animals.
Survivors include his mother; one brother, Charles Tiller of Falls Church; his grandmother, Norma Allen; an aunt, Wanda White of Poland Springs, Maine; an uncle, Rodney Allen of South Paris, Maine; his friend Dave Russell; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and his grandfather, Charles F. Allen of Bridgton, Maine.
Charles E. (Charlie) White
Charles Evans (Charlie) White, chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Frank R. Wolf, died of cancer on July 15 at his home in Oakton. He was 65.
He was well-known in Washington and Northern Virginia political circles for his dedication to his work and a keen sense of humor. He became Rep. Wolf’s top aide in 1987. He also served as the congressman’s campaign manager beginning in 1984 and continuing throughout his career on Capitol Hill. Prior to joining Rep. Wolf’s staff, he had worked for the TRW company for several years.
He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1983 with the rank of captain. He was commissioned as an officer in 1957 and first served aboard the USS Bayfield. After submarine training, Mr. White served in the submarine fleet aboard the USS Picuda, the USS Barbel and the USS Tang, and as the commanding officer of the USS Wahoo. He also served several tours with the Navy’s Bureau of Personnel and attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. His military honors include the National Defense Medal, the Navy-Marine Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three stars and the Navy Achievement Medal with gold star, Legion of Merit, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Navy Commendation Medal with two stars.
Mr. White was born in Fort Monroe, Va., and spent many of his early years inTexas. He was the only child of Air Force Col. Roy B. White and Anna A. White, who preceded him in death. He was a 1957 graduate of Texas A&M University and received a master’s degree in business administration from George Washington University.
He was an avid reader and runner. Other interests included writing poetry, hiking, and photography. He traveled with Rep. Wolf on human rights fact-finding trips to areas of the world including Sierra Leone, East Timor, Sudan, Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Chechnya, Algeria, Tibet and Romania and chronicled in photos and on video the human suffering he witnessed in many areas of the world.
He was a member of St. Leo’s Roman Catholic Church in Fairfax, Virginia.
His first marriage was to Kathleen Kelly, now deceased. A daughter, Lynn White, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Mary J. White of Oakton; two daughters from his first marriage, Leigh Sanders of Pittsburgh and Leslie White of
Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; one stepdaughter, Lt. Michelle Saari of Pensacola, Fl.; and three grandchildren, Kathleen White, Thomas Hummel and Michael Hummel.
Services will be held at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, July 27 at Ft. Meyer Memorial Chapel. The Rev. John Kelly, pastor of St. Leo’s Roman Catholic Church, will conduct the mass. A service will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.

Lt. Gen. Walter E. Lotz Jr.
Walter E. Lotz Jr., Lt. Gen. (Ret.), 83, of Falcons Landing died July 10.
A memorial service was scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Fort Myer Chapel in Arlington, with Chaplain LTC David L. Stricker and the Rev. Dr. Samuel C. Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Colton Lotz of Falcons Landing, Sterling, Va.; three children, Shirley Virginia Lotz of Annandale, Roger Colton Lotz of Lihue, Hi., and Anne Lotz Heins of Honolulu; ten grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.
The family has established the Walter E. Lotz Jr. Memorial Fund for the
Johnson HC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Falcons Landing Benevolent Fund. Arrangements were by Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg.
Maj. Gen. Jonas M. Platt
Maj. Gen. Jonas Mansfield Platt, USMC (Ret.) of Sterling died Thursday, July 28. Born Sept. 21, 1919 in Brooklyn, N.Y., graduated from Norwich University with a B.S. degree and Ohio State University with an M.A. degree. He served for 30 years in the Marine Corps, retiring in 1970. He served on the USS Washington during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific. He participated in infantry amphibious assaults of Pelellu and Okinkawa. He commanded an infantry battalion during the Korean Conflict. He went to Vietnam in 1965 and served as Assistant Division Commander of the 3rd Marine Division and later Chief of Staff of the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force. He was a graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the National War College. Decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, three Legions of Merit with Combat V, Bronze Star with Combat V and the Purple Heart.
Following retirement from the Marine Corps, Gen. Platt served for seven years in the Office of the Assistance Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, where he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Civilian Award and the Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Award. Other activities included the Council of Advisors on Professional Education for the Marine Corps University, Norwich University’s Board of Trustees, Council on Foreign Relations and the New York Yacht Club. Survivors include his wife, Anne Baker Platt of Sterling; a daugher, Joanne Platt Kilgore and son-in-law Gary Kilgore of Alexandria; four step-daughters, Cathy Baker of Charlotte, Vt., Lori Baker of Plainfield, Vt., Randi Baker of Mohrsville, Pa. and Betsy Baker of Burlington, Vt.; and his stepson, James Baker of Saratoga Springs, N. Y.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10 at Fort Myers Chapel, with interment at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Norwich University, Northfield, Vt. 05663. Arrangements are by Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg.
Lt. Col. Gervase Rozanski
Lt. Col. Gervase Joseph Rozanski, USAF (Ret.) of Falcons Landing Retirement Community died July 25 at Johnsons Center at Falcons Landing.
Born May 6, 1924 in Philadelphia, he served from 1944 to 1946 with the U.S.Air Force in the Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes campaigns as a pilot of a B-52 bomber. He recieved European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Air medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters, the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was also a sports photographer for the Philadelphia Inquirer. He remained with the Air Force Reserve until 1971.
Survivors include his wife, Eugenia A. Rozanski; a brother, Dennis Rozanski of Philadelphia; a niece, Stephanie Lovett; and a newphew, Dennis Rozanski Jr.
Services with military honors were scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 at Arlington National Cemetery. Friends are requested to gather at the Administration Office at 2:30 p.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Hospice of Northern Virginia, P.O. Francis A. Thompson II
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for Francis A. (Frank) Thompson II.
The church is located at 3022 Woodlawn Ave. at Route 50 in Falls Church.

Phyllis Marie McCauley
Phyllis Marie McCauley, 57, of Ashburn died July 31 at Washington Hospital Center. She was a graduate of Beaver Falls, Pa. High School Class of 1961 and worked as a telecommunications sales manager.
Survivors include her husband, Chuck McCauley of Ashburn; three daughters, Erma McDonough and Bea Neukirk, both of Ashburn, and Christine McCauley of Coral Springs, Fl.; her father, John Anthony Beatrice of Ashburn; two brothers, John Anthony Beatrice Jr. of St. John, In. and Tony Beatrice of Columbus, Oh.; son-in-laws John McDonough and Jason Neukirk, both of Ashburn; and grandsons Devin McDonough and Jared Neukirk, both of Ashburn.
Funeral services were held Aug. 5 at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, with Father Sean Rousseau officiating.
Taylor Mackenzie
Taylor Mackenzie Canary, age 1, of Sterling died Aug. 13 at Loudoun Hospital Center. She was born in Virginia on Jan. 10, 1999.
Survivors include her parents, Christen Baker and Christopher Michael Canary, both of Sterling; one sister, Hannah Canary of Sterling; her grandparents, Linda Baker of Sterling, Robert E. Baker of Front Royal and Doug
Brown and Linda Brown; four aunts, C.J. Baker of Sterling, Gabriella Pankow of Coon Rapids, Mn., Heather Reyes of Asheville, N.C. and Stacey Robinson of Goldsboro, N.C.; and four uncles, Matthew Baker of Sterling, Ben Pankow of Coon Rapids, James Reyes of Asheville and Shane Robinson of Goldsboro.
Visitation was scheduled at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, with services at 11 a.m. Aug. 17, with Pastor Brad Russell officiating. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Leesburg.
Eric Peter VanNederynen
Funeral services for Eric Peter VanNederynen, 15, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 at Galilee United Methodist Church, 20600 Broad Run Dr. in Sterling.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Sept. 21 at the church.
He is survived by his parents, Jeffrey and Mary Ellen Baade VanNederynen; his brothers, Kris VanNederynen of Orlando, Fl.and Patrick Van Nederynen of Sterling; and his grandparents, Albert and Dorothy Van Nederynen of Castleton, N.Y. and Donald and Mary Baade of Raleigh, N.C.
