William Allen Kitto

William Allen. Kitto, 40, of Ashburn died Oct. 23.

He was born in Oceanside, Cal., on Feb. 7, 1962. He was a graduate of West Virginia University where he was an avid and competitive athlete, leading the Mountaineer Swim Team to many victories. After his college swimming career he worked as a coaching assistant for the Mountaineer Swim Team.

He was an executive in the waste management industry for 17 years in Little Rock, Ark.; Seattle, Wa.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Raleigh, N.C.; Milwaukee, Wi.; and Ashburn.

Allen excelled as an executive in the waste management industry for 17 years. Allen worked and lived in various locations throughout his career including Little Rock, AK; Seattle, WA; Buffalo, NY; Raleigh, NC; Milwaukee, WI; and Ashburn, VA. A longtime advocate of working with young persons, most recently he was the strength and conditioning coach for the AshburnXtreme Ice Hockey Club.

Survivors include his wife, Christina L. Kitto; (Tina); three children, Craig, Carli, and Jack; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Kathleen Schramm; six brother-in laws; two sister-in laws; and eight nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on Oct. 28 at Saint Theresa Church in Ashburn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Allen Kitto's memory to The Kitto Family Fund, 21530 Tithables Circle, Ashburn, Va. 20148.

Julie Tatum-Athey

Julie Tatum-Athey of Sterling died Oct. 29 at the Leesburg home of her parents, Robert E. and Nancy Wills Tatum Sr., following a five-year struggle with colon cancer.

She was born Oct. 24, 1962 in Huntington, W.Va. and moved with with her family to Leesburg in 1969. She attended Loudoun County Public Schools and was a member of the Loudoun County High School Class of 1981. She played on the girls soccer and tennis teams. She attended Monroe Vocational School and Northern Virginia Community College. She graduated from a Nursing Program in 1991. Early in her nursing career she was employed by Loudoun Hospital Center in the Long-term Care Unit. She was an LPN with Dulles Medical Group in 1997, and was most recently employed at Falcons Landing Health Care Center before resigning last year due to her failing health.

Survivors include her parents; three children, Ryan Mitchell, Jacob Robert and Camille Grace; two sisters, Rhonda Tatum-Harrell, Clyde Harrell and Leah MOrgan Harrell of Berryville, and Jaymie Tatum Crider and Donald Crider of Warrenton.

A memorial service was held Nov., 2 at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, with the Rev. Lyman Eddy officiating. Memorial donations in her name may be sent to Hospice of Northern Virginia, 206 Gibson St. N.W., Leesburg, Va. 20176, or to the Life Foundation International, 901 S. Randolph St., Arlington, Va. 22204.

Maj. Harold D. Baggette

Maj. Harold Digby Baggette, USAF (Ret.), 68, a 21-year resident of CountrySide, died at home Oct. 30 after a long neurological illness.

Maj. Baggette, a member of the Strategic Air Command, was a participant in the Cuban Missile Crisis and a Viet Nam veteran, a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He served 24 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1978. From 1978 to 1995 he was a Program Manager in military-related electronic warfare projects for SWL Inc., a Northern Virginia technology firm. He attended the University of Alabama at Mobile and graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Business Administration.

Survivors include his wife, Susan; three brothers, Gerry of Channel Islands, Cal., John of Decatur, Al. and Phil of Seattle, Wa; three sisters, Sally Ann Ramey of Mobile, Dorothy Alba Bailey of Leroy, Al., and Gayle Wynn of Seattle; an aunt, Marguerite Robinson; four children, Traci Shifflet, Jayne Maher, and Rick and Mark Baggette; four stepchildren, Jason, Timothy and Pietri Freeman, and Melodie Whitbey; foster daughters Donna Dailey and Rebecca Shores; and grandchildren Joshua, Tabytha, Dylan, Christopher, Jonathan, Paige, Cora, Rose, Emily, Clare, Thoburn, Nicholas, Maxton, William, Palmer and Nathaniel. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Millicent Stana Baggette, and a brother, Robert Baggette.

A memorial service will be held at Galilee United Methodist Church in Sterling, with interment with Full military Honors at Arlington Cemetery. Dates were not announced. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Harold Baggette Memorial Fund at Galilee United Methodist Church, 20600 Broad Run Dr., Sterling, Va. 20165, or Home Call Hospice Services, Inc., 8325 Boone Blvd., Suite 403, Vienna, Va. 22182, or the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Woodholme Medical Building, Suite 515, 1838 Green Tree Road, Baltimore, Md. 21208. Arrangements are by Adams- Green Funeral Home in Herndon.

Richard Michael Brennan

Richard Michael Brennan, 71, died Nov. 1 at Loudoun Hospital Center.

A resident of Leesburg, he retired from Union Carbide as Director of International Affairs. His post career in Washington was as President of the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition and the Coalition for International Trade Equity. He had been working as a Realtor since 1993.

He served as Chairman of the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce in 1995-96 and was honored with a lifetime membership in 2000. He was also a member of the Loudoun County Economic Commission from 1995-2001, where he served as President, Vice President and Treasurer.

He was past Chairman of the U.S.Chamber’s Multinational Corporation Committee and the Chemical Manufacturers Association International Trade Committee, a board member of the International Council of the Conference Board and the Center for International Management Studies, an affiliate of the International YMCA. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Arline; a son, Thomas; daughters Patricia, Carolyn and Jeanne; eight grandchildren; one brother, William J. Brennan of Columbus, Ohio; and one sister, Betty Killeen of Lyndhurst, Ohio.

Services were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 5 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Leesburg, with Father Sean Rousseau officiating. Interment was at Union Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Memorials & Tributes Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216; or Lights of Love Ladies Board, Loudoun Hospital Center, 44045 Riverside Parkway, Leesburg, Va. 20176.

Francis O. Curtin

Francis O. Curtin died Nov. 1 at his home in Ashburn.

He was born June 16, 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio, lived in Greensboro, N.C. for ten years, and spent most of his life in Northern Virginia.

Survivors include his children, Christine Lamkin, Patrick Curtin and Francis Curtin; three grandchildren, Sean Francis Lamkin, Mitchell Ruschke Curtin and James Daniel Curtin; son-in-law Steve Lamkin; and daughter-in-law Lisa Curtin.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at Adams- Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden St. in Herndon. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 14 Cornwall St. N.W., Leesburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to St. James’ Episcopal Church. Arrangements are by Adams- Green Funeral Home.

Mildred Jones Knupp

Mildred Jones Knupp of Herndon died Nov. 23 at Reston Hospital.

She was born Nov. 26, 1906 in Timberville, Va. She was the widow of the late Jacob C. Knupp.

Survivors include one daughter, Jean E. Whitmer and husband Lawrence of Herndon; one sister, Ruby Branner and husband Don of Newmarket, Va.; grandchildren Linda W. Brown and husband Roger of Herndon; Cathy A. Schupbach and husband Gregory of Falls Church; and Karen W. Cobb and husband Elwyn (Bud) of Sterling; and Lawrence A. Whitmer Jr. and wife Lynn of Sterling; and great-grandchildren Erin L. and Elaine C. Brown of Herndon, Christy Ann Mickels of Vancourver, Wa., Christopher A. Schupbach of Falls Church, and Rachel B. and Shelby L. Whitmer of Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Herndon Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 1471, Herndon, Va. 20172. Arrangements were by Adams- Green Funeral Home.

Edwin W. (Ed) Stewart

Edwin Walker (Ed) Stewart, a lifelong resident of Sterling, died Nov. 7 at his home.

He was born Feb. 13, 1928 in Sterling. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and retired after 30 years from the custodial maintenance department of Arlington County Schools. He was an usher at the 7 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and held several offices as a Mason. He worked at St. Joseph’s with the custodial staff after his retirement, and worked part-time at Adams- Green Funeral Home for almost 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Elvira M. Stewart of Sterling; one son, Wayne E. Stewart; three grandchildren and other relatives. A mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 12 at St. Joseph’s, with interment at Sterling Cemetery. Memorials may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 12240 Waples Mill Road, Suite 4021, Fairfax, Va. 22030.

Herbert E. (Lefty) Collins

Herbert Eugene (Lefty) Collins of Sterling, 81, died Jan. 8 at his home.

He was born June 15, 1921 in Montgomery County, Md. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Gladys Collins.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Gary Alan and Dawn Collins, Steven Michael and Mary Anne Collins, and Jeanne Ellen and Alan Dutton; and six grandchildren, Audfa, Tiegh, Lance and Jeffery Collins and Jason and Christopher Dutton.

Funeral services were held Jan. 13 at Sterling United Methodist Church, with interment at Sterling Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Club, 4103 Benning Road N.E., Washington, D.C. 20019. Arrangements were by Adams- Green Funeral Home of Herndon.

Kevin Fondahn

Kevin Fondahn, a Centreville, Chantilly and Sterling resident, age 18, died last week.

Services will be held at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Soucey Place, Centreville (corner of Croanoke and Braddock) on Monday, Jan. 20. Visitation is from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. The service begins at 11 a.m.

Donations in honor of Kevin may be made to Lower Loudoun Little League, P.O. Box 23, Sterling, Va. 20167.

Doris M. Johnson

Doris M. Johnson, an 11-year-resident of Sterling, died Jan. 7 at Reston Hospital.

Survivors include two brothers, Thomas Johnson of Fort Washington, Md. and Joe Johnson of St. Petersburg, Fl.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19 at William Watters House, 22365 Enterprise St., Sterling.
