Elmer "Chappy" Martin 77 years
Elmer "Chappy" Martin, 77, of Tappahannock died at his residence Saturday, June 2, 2001. He was the father of Bertharine Ashton of Montross. Mr. Martin was a self-employed logger. He was a member of First Mount Olive Baptist Church, Newtown, and a watchcare member of Beulah Baptist Church, Minor. In addition to his daughter of Montross, he is survived by his wife, Leanna Elizabeth Martin; another daughter, Geraldine Tompkins of Tappahannock; two sons, Elmer Martin Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., and Alexander Martin of Tappahannock; four sisters, Margie Williams of New Jersey, Susie Newman and Betty Darby, both of Tappahannock and Agnes Martin of St. Stephens Church; and a brother, Bennett Martin of Camden, N.J. A funeral was held Saturday at Beulah Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Garland Fountain officiated. Washington Funeral Home, Tappahannock, handled the arrangements.

John H. "Jack" King 77 years
John H. "Jack" King, 77, of the Dogue area of King George County died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Heritage Hall Health Care in King George. Born in Westmoreland County, Mr. King moved to King George at age four and lived there the rest of his life. He had retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation and as a farmer. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn King; a son, John King Jr. of King George; two granddaughters; a grandson; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. Burial was in the Morgan family cemetery on U.S. 301 in King George. The Rev. Charles Anderson officiated.

Arin Micheal Harrison Johnson infant
Arin Micheal Harrison Johnson, infant son of Stacy Ray and Paula Ann Johnson, of King George County died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Besides his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Chelsea Johnson, Courtney Johnson and Caylee Johnson, and a brother, Andrew Johnson, all of the home; his maternal grandparents, Sherry and Donald Rice of King George; and his paternal grandparents, Patsy and Lee Johnson of King George. A private memorial service was held May 17.

Richard Lee Cooper 55 years
Richard Lee Cooper, 55, of King George County was found dead on the Potomac River shores near Belvedere Beach Wednesday, June 6, 2001. Born in Fredericksburg, Mr. Cooper worked as a logger for Williams Logging in King George. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Carla Cooper; a daughter, Rhonda Lynn Cooper of King George; and a sister, Sally M. Hall of King George. A funeral was held Saturday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Burial was in Mountain View Baptist Church cemetery in King George. The Rev. Willis A. Dempsey officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 6713 Passapatanzy Drive, King George, Va. 22485.

George F. Bonhag, Jr. 47 years
George F. Bonhag, Jr., 47, of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, from injuries he received in a single-vehicle crash on May 26 in King George County. Survivors include his wife, Alice L. "Jackie" Bonhag; and his mother, Lavern B. Bonhag. A funeral was held Saturday at Wildwood Baptist Church in Bethesda, Md. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to a favorite charity. Pumphrey's Funeral Home, Bethesda, handled the arrangements.

Doris Loraine Balderson 73 years
Doris Loraine Balderson, 73, of Montross died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Born in Westmoreland County, Mrs. Balderson was a member of Providence United Methodist Church, Montross. She was the widow of Ernest P. Balderson. Survivors include a son, Ray Ernest Balderson of Colonial Beach; two sisters, Cora Lee Frene of Silver Spring, Md., and Lillian Altman of Montross; a brother, Roy M. Sanford of Montross; and two grandchildren. A funeral was held Friday at Providence United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Lois Phemister officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Diabetes Association, Rappahannock Chapter, Box 1385, Fredericksburg, Va. 22402. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, handled the arrangements.

William Jack Sparks 80 years
William Jack Sparks, 80, of Colonial Beach died Saturday, June 2, 2001. Mr. Sparks was a World War II veteran and a past president of the eighth district of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had retired from the American Tobacco Co. Survivors include a brother, James E. Sparks of California; a sister, Etta Fowler of Norfolk; and a grandson. A funeral was held Tuesday at Bliley Funeral Home’s Staples Mill Chapel in Richmond. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Inez Smith Walker Richardson 81 years
Inez Smith Walker Richardson, 81, of Philadelphia, formerly of Port Royal in Caroline County, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at St. Agnes Hospital in Philadelphia. She was the sister of Mary Brooks, Helen Howard, Rosie Clarke and Durvell Smith, all of King George County. Born in Caroline, Mrs. Richardson had retired as a cashier at A&P Store in Philadelphia after 35 years. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Port Royal. In addition to her three sisters and brother of King George, Mrs. Richardson is survived by her husband, Edward B. Richardson; a daughter, Brenda Walker of Adelphi, Md.; a son, Walter Walker Jr. of Philadelphia; a stepson, Aaron Horton of Philadelphia; another sister, Martha Barclay of Hanover; another brother, William Smith of Ruther Glen; and eight grandchildren. A funeral was held Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Port Royal. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Gregory Nick officiated and the Rev. Thomas Barclay gave the eulogy. Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, handled the arrangements.

Charles Edward Peyton 76 years
Charles Edward Peyton, 76, of Oak Grove in Westmoreland County died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at a Warsaw nursing home. Mr. Peyton was a member of Little Zion Baptist Church and worked as an electrician for Underwood Electric Company. He had retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. Survivors include his wife, Zelda Smith Peyton; seven sons, Thomas Peyton, Wilbert Peyton, Rufus Peyton, Bobby Peyton, Carroll Peyton, Rodney Peyton and Clifford Peyton, all of Oak Grove; three sisters, Geraldine Reynolds, Christine Haskins and Patricia Latney, all of Oak Grove; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Christine Walker. A funeral was held Monday at Little Zion Baptist Church. Burial was in Smith Family Memorial Garden. The Rev. William B. Scott officiated. Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home in Lancaster handled the arrangements.

Ward Emerson Lohr 89 years
Ward Emerson Lohr, 89, of LaPlata, Md., died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Genesis Elder Care in LaPlata. He was the grandfather of Michelle Chisholm of King George County. Mr. Lohr attended Dahlgren United Methodist Church and had retired from Bethlehem Steel. Besides his granddaughter of King George, Mr. Lohr is survived by a son; a sister; another grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Saturday at Leckemby Funeral Home in Myersdale, Pa. Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, LaPlata, handled arrangements there.

Lydia Morgan Burnette infant
Lydia Morgan Burnette, infant daughter of Jessica Burnette of Colonial Beach and Paul Bergeron of King George County, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond from complications of surgery. Besides her parents, she is survived by her paternal grandparents, Mary and Jerry Bergeron of King George; and her maternal grandparents, Peggy Martin of Colonial Beach and Mike Burnette of Bowling Green. A graveside service was held Friday in Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev. Ricky Richie and the Rev. Deborah Fair officiated. Found & Sons Funeral Chapels, Fredericksburg, handled the arrangements.

Kathleen Kaye Bowers 45 years
Kathleen Kaye Bowers, 45, of Colonial Beach died of liver failure Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Arlington, she worked as a nurse for the American Red Cross for 15 years. Survivors include two daughters, Andrea E. Laigle and Stephanie M. Laigle, both of Centreville; her father, Robert Mac Kenzie Kaye of Front Royal; a sister, Karla Marie Miller of Front Royal; two brothers, Frank Robert Kaye of Front Royal and Kevin Scott Kaye of Annandale; seven nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Saturday at Advent Funeral Home in Falls Church. Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, handled local arrangements.

John Arthur Bland 85 years
John Arthur Bland, 85, of King George County died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. A King George native, Mr. Bland worked as a laborer and was a member of Little Ark Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Susie C. Bland; five daughters, Mary Evans of Landover, Md., Christine Drayton of Washington, Shirley Bland of Forestville, Md., Barbara Patterson of Glendale, Md., and Joyce Davis of Lanham, Md.; a son, Ervin Bland of Woodbridge; two brothers, James Bland and Clarence Bland, both of King George; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Thursday at Little Ark Baptist Church, Owens. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Ben Jones officiated. Lee Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements.

William D. "Bill" McCormick 83 years
William D. "Bill" McCormick, 83, of King George County died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Lexington, he had retired from the Army after 26 years. Survivors include his wife, Guadalupe "Fe" McCormick; five sons, Jacki McCormick, Robert McCormick and Wayne McCormick, all of Lexington, and Jimmy McCormick of Montana; two brothers, Preston McCormick and Walton McCormick, both of Lexington; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, Woodbridge. Burial was in Stafford Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Mark Byrd officiated.

Richard Alan "Rick" Frazer 31 years
Richard Alan "Rick" Frazer, 31, of King George County died Monday, May 14, 2001, as the result of a car and bicycle accident on State Route 206 in King George. Born in Fredericksburg, Mr. Frazer worked at Rappahannock Goodwill Industries in Fredericksburg. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in King George and was a graduate of Benedictine School in Ridgely, Md. He was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed dancing. Survivors include his parents, Richard A. and Patricia B. Frazer, with whom he resided; two sisters, Ryan Giorgis of Richmond and Robyn Frazer of the home; his maternal grandmother, Alma Bishop of Fort Belvoir; his paternal grandparents, Harry F. and Stella B. Frazer of Lewes, Del.; and one niece. A funeral was held Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Christopher M. Agnew and the Rev. Norman Siefferman officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Benedictine School Foundation, c/o Sister Jeannette Murray, O.S.B., 14299 Benedictine Lane, Ridgely, Md. 21660. Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements.
