Margaret Mothershead Schenk, 80, of Montross died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Foneswood, Mrs. Schenk was a member of Ephesus Christian Church there. She was the widow of Frederick William Schenk. Survivors include two daughters, Rita Howard of Alexandria and Donna Schenk of Montross; a sister, Vera Hynson of Oak Grove; a brother, Garnett Mothershead of Montross; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A funeral was held Wednesday at Welch Funeral Home, Montross. Burial was in Ephesus Christian Church cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Margaret Schenk Memorial Fund, c/o Welch Funeral Home, 17546 Kings Highway, Montross, Va. 22520.

Thomas Leroy Richard Sr. 80 years
Thomas Leroy Richard Sr., 80, of Montross died Thursday, August 9, 2001, at Warsaw Retirement Village. Born in Stafford County, Mr. Richard was a supervisor at the Department of Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. Before working there, he served in the U.S. Army for two years until he was honorably discharged. More recently, he worked for Capital Heights Pharmacy and the East Side Cab Company #258. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Washington and Carmody Hills Baptist Church in Seat Pleasant, Md. He also was a member of Eureka Lodge #5 in Washington. He was the widower of Dorothy Savage Thomas. Survivors include a daughter, Vondell Mayo of Montross; a son, Richard Thomas Jr. of Fort Washington, Md.; a sister, Dorothy Thomas Clark of Washington; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Tuesday at Parkview Baptist Church in Landover, Md. Washington Funeral Home, Tappahannock, handled the arrangements.

Norris W. "Punky" Lumpkin Jr. 54 years
Norris W. "Punky" Lumpkin Jr., 54, of Colonial Beach died of cancer Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Warsaw, Mr. Lumpkin had retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, where he was a telecommunications specialist. He also previously worked for Contel and ITS. He was a member of the Colonial Beach Rod Club and a former member of the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Linda A. Lumpkin; and a daughter, Kelly Jewell of Colonial Beach. He also was the stepfather of the late J.C. Dye. A funeral was held today at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fredericksburg. The Rev. Ronald S. Okrasinski officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.

Dorothy J. Barnett 93 years
Dorothy J. Barnett, 93, of King George County died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Beverly Health Care of Fredericksburg. Born in Washington, Mrs. Barnett had retired from the United States District Court there. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in King George, where she sang in the senior choir and was a member of the Missionary Society and Sunday school. Mrs. Barnett, the widow of Milton Barnett, is survived by a sister, Annabelle W. Dickens of King George. A funeral was held Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Larry Finch officiated. Lee Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements.

Lois Dorothy Wheatley Wriston 86 years
Lois Dorothy Wheatley Wriston, 86, of King George County died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Coeburn, W.Va., she had resided in Scarbro, W.Va. She was the widow of Lacy E. "Big Lacy" Wriston. Mrs. Wriston was a member of Fairview Methodist Church in East Kingston. Survivors include a daughter, Lydia Davis of King George; a brother, George M. Wheatley of New Market, Tenn.; and a grandson. A funeral was held today at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, W.Va.

Retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer Joseph E. Holmes 74 years
Retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer Joseph E. Holmes, 74, of Henderson, Nev., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at his home. He was the husband of Patricia Holmes of King George County and stepfather of Erik Pierce of Colonial Beach. He had retired in 1986 as associate professor emeritus of mathematical sciences at Mary Washington College after 18 years. A World War II veteran, he served aboard the USS Nassau in the Pacific and retired from the Naval Reserve in 1986 after 31 years. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and was active in chapters in Las Vegas and at Lake of the Woods. He also held memberships in other military organizations, including the World War II Memorial and the USN Memorial. His varied background also included teaching in a New York prison, at a New York high school, and at Ithaca College, as well as police and corrections work, plumbing and working as an attendant at a mental hospital. In addition to his wife and stepson, he is survived by a daughter, Daphne Holmes of Bedford, Texas; another stepson, Kelvin Pierce of Vienna; two grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandsons. A memorial service, with full military honors, was held at the Veterans Memorial Chapel in Boulder City, Nev.

The Rev. Earl S. Cox 86 years
The Rev. Earl S. Cox, 86, of Fredericksburg died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Cox was a retired Baptist minister, having served as pastor of Colonial Beach Baptist Church and of Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian. He also served as the associate pastor of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church in Richmond. After retirement, Mr. Cox founded Potomac Fence Co. He was a member of the Portsmouth Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years, and also was a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lula Cox; two sons, Irvin E. Cox of Charlottesville and Donald E. Cox of Fredericksburg; and six grandchildren. A funeral was held today at Fredericksburg Baptist Church. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Dr. J. Larry Haun and the Rev. J. Howard Cates officiated. Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, handled the arrangements.

Viola "Sister" Bumbrey-Shelton 88 years
Viola "Sister" Bumbrey-Shelton, 88, of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at her residence. Born in King George County, Mrs. Bumbrey-Shelton had retired as owner of a dry cleaning business in New York. She was a member of Shiloh (Old Site) Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Young Women's League. She was the widow of Brice Shelton. Survivors include four sisters, Vernice B. Tyler and Eliza B. Williams, both of Fredericksburg, and Eunice B. Lewis and Gertrude B. Wilkinson, both of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Veola Bumbrey and Richard E. Bumbrey, both of Fredericksburg. A funeral was held Sunday at Shiloh (Old Site) Baptist Church, Fredericksburg. Burial was in Glen Haven Memory Gardens in Stafford County. The Rev. Milton Branch officiated and the Rev. Lawrence A. Davies gave the eulogy. A.L. Bennett Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Bettie Tate Brooks 79 years
Bettie Tate Brooks, 79, of Montross died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. She was the widow of Maurice Stuart Brooks. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Johnson of Montross and Gracie Quarles of Louisa; a son, Calvin Brooks of Camp Springs, Md.; two sisters, Emma Johnson and Dorothy Tate, both of Montross; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Thursday at Siloam Baptist Church, Zacata. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Clarence Long officiated. Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, Oldhams, handled the arrangements.

Lucy Maria Williams 82 years
Lucy Maria Williams, 82, of Fredericksburg died Friday, July 27, 2001, at the Fredericksburg Nursing Home. Born in King George County, Ms. Williams was a member of Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church in King George. Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Wilson and Grace L. Sullivan, both of Fredericksburg; 15 nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Sunday at Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Deborah Fair officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church, 8330 Fletcher's Chapel Church Road, King George, Va. 22458. Willie C. Smith Sr. 65 years
Willie C. Smith Sr., 65, of Oak Grove died as the result of an automobile accident Friday, July 27, 2001, at Washington Hospital Center. A native of Oak Grove, Mr. Smith was a maintenance technician for the Private Industry Council in Seat Pleasant, Md. He also was a founding member of New Hope Baptist Bible Church in Oak Grove and chairman of the board of deacons. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Smith of Oak Grove; three sons, Willie C. Smith Jr. and Sylvester Smith, both of Oak Grove, and Richard Smith of Tennessee; a daughter, Dorinda Epps of Lancaster, Pa.; four sisters, Senora Allen, Blanche Johnson, Margaret Purce and Maude Smith, all of Oak Grove; and five grandchildren. A funeral was held Wednesday at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George County. The Rev. Jerry W. Francis Sr. officiated. Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, handled the arrangements.

Donald Derwood Smith Jr. 23 years
Donald Derwood Smith Jr., 23, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Colonial Beach as the result of an automobile accident. Born in Fredericksburg, Mr. Smith was a construction worker and member of Yeocomico Episcopal Church at Tucker Hill. Survivors include his father, Donald D. Smith of Mount Holly; his mother and stepfather, Brenda D. and Eddie Weston of Montross; a brother, Christopher Michael Smith of Montross; a stepsister, Pamela Leigh Eston of Montross; a stepbrother, Brian Scott Weston of Montross; his parental grandparents, Jack and Lucille Smith of Montross; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Mahan of Village; and his companion, Lacey Browning of Tappahannock. A funeral was held today at St. James Episcopal Church, Montross. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Pretice Kinser III officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Diabetes Association, 1290 Seminole Trail, Suite 2, Charlottesville, Va. 22901. Queen Slyvetta Richards 96 years
Queen Slyvetta Richards, 96, of Colonial Beach died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at her residence. A funeral was held Monday Little Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove. Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, Nomini Grove, handled the arrangements.

Floyd D. Madison 64 years
Floyd D. Madison, 64, of King George County died at his home Tuesday, July 24, 2001. A King George native, Mr. Madison had worked at the Virginia Department of Transportation, as a farmer at Powhatan Plantation and at C&R Enterprise, all in King George. Survivors include his wife, Doris Staples Madison; a son, Michael D. Madison of Orlando, Fla.; two stepsons, Carl Longest of King George and Danny Lee Staples of Oak Grove; a sister, Patty Gray of Port Royal; three granddaughters; a stepgranddaughter; a stepgrandson; and a nephew. A funeral was held at Friday at Montague Baptist Church in King George. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Kenneth Brooks officiated. Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements.

Beunos Kyle Kelley 82 years
Beunos Kyle Kelley, 82, of Fredericksburg died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at her residence. She is survived by her companion, Emmitt D. Kane, of King George County. Born in Johnson City, Tenn., she was a child-care provider and the widow of James A. Kelley. Additional survivors include a daughter, Beunos Dowd-Korn of Spotsylvania County; a son, James A. Kelley Jr. of Spotsylvania; a sister, Ruth P. Long of Concord, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Alby Gene Kelley. A funeral was held Thursday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. The Rev. Willis A. Dempsey and Price "Billy" Jett officiated.
