Ethel Bulger Carlson 97 years
Ethel Bulger Carlson, 97, of Kinsale died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Mary Washington Health Care in Colonial Beach. Born in Northumberland County, Mrs. Carlson was a member of Henderson United Methodist Church at Hycinth. She was the widow of Julian Robbins Carlson. Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn C. Glass of Tennessee and Mary C. Bryant of Village; three sons, Cannon Booker Carlson of Kinsale, Julian Robbins Carlson Jr. of Colonial Beach, and Leonard C. Carlson of Montross; a sister, Charlotte Autrey of Shady Side, Md.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Thursday at Welch Funeral Home, Montross. Burial was in Carmel United Methodist Church, Kinsale. The Rev. Brant Hays officiated.

Dorothy Mae Broadus 64 years
Dorothy Mae Broadus, 64, of King George County died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, from injuries she received in a car accident on State Route 218 in Stafford County. A native and lifelong resident of King George, Mrs. Broadus was a domestic worker and member of St. Stephens Baptist Church, where she was active on the usher board. She was the widow of Webster Broadus. Survivors include a son, Carrol White of King George; three sisters, Helen Poole and Lillian Branham, both of King George, and Mary Latney of Capitol Heights, Md.; six brothers, Lomas White and Percil Branham, both of King George, Mitchell White of Alexandria, the Rev. James White of Spotsylvania County, Berkley White of Washington and William Branham of Caroline County; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Saturday at St. Stephens Baptist Church in King George. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Anthony Jones officiated. Bailey Funeral Service handled the arrangements.

Houston W. Norris 68 years
Houston W. Norris, 68, of Colonial Beach died at his residence Monday, Jan. 14, 2002. Born in Washington, Mr. Norris had worked as a railroad expressman there. He had retired in 1998 as an ordnance handler from Fort A.P. Hill. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Colonial Beach. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Taylor Norris; three sons, Houston Norris Jr. of Westmoreland County, Mark Norris of Virginia Beach and Mike Taylor of Orange County; a stepdaughter, Becky Morgans of Colonial Beach; a stepson, John Higdon of Culpeper County; two brothers, Calvin Norris of Rollins Fork and James Norris of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Friday at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park, King George. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443; to the Colonial Beach Fire Department, Box 212, Colonial Beach, Va. 22443; or to the Westmoreland Chapter, American Cancer Society, 296 Federal Farm Road, c/o L.C. Reed, Montross, Va. 22520.

Ina Jean Osborne Haley 88 years
Ina Jean Osborne Haley, 88, of King George County died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mrs. Haley is survived by three daughters, Barbara Littrell of Spotsylvania County, Annabell Hodge of Sparta, N.C., and Georgia Mae Haynes of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; a son, Ralph E. Osborne of North Wilkesboro; 31 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Tuesday at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels, Fredericksburg. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Billy Barnes officiated.

Herman Lindy Graham 74 years
Herman Lindy Graham, 74, of Colonial Beach died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Graham had retired from Krispy Kreme in Alexandria and later did custodial work at Colonial Beach Baptist Church. He was a member of Christiansburg Baptist Church and an Army veteran who served during the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Linda L. Graham; a daughter, Dawn E. Graham of Colonial Beach; a son, Herman L. Graham Jr. of Charlottesville; a stepdaughter, April L. Larson of Farmington, Minn.; a stepson, Matthew Gawen of Elyria, Ohio; five sisters; four brothers; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Tuesday at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in Colonial Beach. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George County. The Rev. Johnny Almond officiated.

Holly Curtis infant
Holly Curtis, infant daughter of Jeff and Tracy Curtis of King George County, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. In addition to her parents, Holly is survived by a sister, Amber Fawn Boyer-Curtis of the home; a brother, Corey Michael Curtis of the home; and her paternal grandparents, Ed and Pat Curtis of Fredericksburg. Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, is handling the arrangements, which will be private.

Juanita Mozingo Clarke 76 years
Juanita Mozingo Clarke, 76, of Montross died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Farnham Manor. She was a life member of Currioman Baptist Church at Zacata. Survivors include her husband, Allen Clarke; two daughters, Brenda C. Riley and Janice Bryant, both of Montross; her mother, Janie Mozingo of Warsaw; a brother, John Thomas Mozingo of Oregon; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A funeral was held Saturday at Currioman Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Currioman Baptist Church, 1026 Eppings Tract Road, Montross, Va. 22520; or to Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck, Box 262, Warsaw, Va. 22572. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, handled the arrangements.

Rodney Glenwood "Puncho" Byrd 46 years
Rodney Glenwood "Puncho" Byrd, 46, of Westmoreland County died of cancer Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at his home. Mr. Byrd was a master gardener at George Washington Birthplace National Monument and a member of Little Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Byrd; a daughter, Monicia Fortune of Colonial Beach; three sons, Rickey Byrd of Washington, Rodney Byrd of Fredericksburg and Eric Byrd of Montross; his parents, Charles and Alberta Byrd; three sisters, Phyllis Jett, Betsy Sharpe and Renee Johnson, all of Colonial Beach; three brothers, Bobby Byrd, Charles A. Byrd and Gregory Byrd, all of Colonial Beach; and six grandchildren. A funeral was held this afternoon at Little Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove. Burial was in Robb's Hill Burial Grounds in Leedstown. The Rev. William B. Scott officiated. Lee's Funeral Home in King George County handled the arrangements.

Richard Wallace Skidmore 72 years
Richard Wallace Skidmore, 72, of Stafford County died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. He was the father of Teresa Ketola of King George, and brother of Pearl Cunningham and Thelma Leake, both of King George County. Born in King George, Mr. Skidmore had retired as an electrician from the federal government at the Quantico Marine Corps Base. He also retired as an animal warden in Stafford. He was a member of Elks Lodge 875, American Legion Post 89 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Post 4123. He was the widower of Nettie Skidmore and was a Navy veteran. A funeral was held today at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel. Burial was in Quantico National Cemetery. The Rev. Roland Preston officiated In addition to his daughter and sisters of King George, Mr. Skidmore is survived by four other daughters, Velda Cooper of Spotsylvania County, Wanda Weathers, Donna Perry and Dale Willis, all of Stafford; two sons, Richard W. Skidmore of New Orleans, La., and Eddie Dean Skidmore of Hibbing, Mich.; 21 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was also the father of the late James Abel. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Lung Association of Northern Virginia, 9735 Main St., Fairfax, Va. 22031.

Norman Clark Scholl 80 years
Norman Clark Scholl, 80, of Oak Grove died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Speed, Ind., Mr. Scholl had worked as a truck driver for 30 years for a moving company in Cleveland, Ohio, before he moved to Oak Grove in 1967. He was a member of the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department and coordinator of the Placid Bay Neighborhood Watch. Mr. Scholl was a World War II Navy veteran, having served on the USS Cormorant. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Bullock Scholl; two daughters, Juanita Irene "Peanut" Bennett of Mechanicsville, Md., and Mary Anne Karwatsky of Olmstead Falls, Ohio; a son, Norman Clark Scholl Jr. of Brunswick, Ohio; 13 sisters and brothers; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral was held today at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Oak Grove. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery. The Rev. Prentice Kinser III officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443; or to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Box 177, Montross, Va. 22520. Martha M. Pollard 77 years
Martha M. Pollard, 77, of King George County died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at her home. A King George native, Mrs. Pollard was a member of Union Bethel Baptist Church, where she served as secretary, sang in the Senior Choir and the Gospel Choir, was a member of the Flower Club and Nursing Unit and was a deaconess. Survivors include her husband, Leonard R. Pollard; three daughters, Francenia Verdel Reid of Fredericksburg, Lenee Jon-Pierre of New York City and Martha Benita Tice of Engelwood, N.J.; two sons, Dwight T. Pollard of New York City and Kelvin M. Pollard of Baltimore; three sisters, Clara Johnson and Kay Broom, both of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Mary B. Lucas of Washington; and one grandson. A funeral was held Monday at Lee Funeral Home, King George. The Rev. Joseph E. Tolliver officiated.

Robert M. Norris Jr. 89 years
Robert M. Norris Jr., 89, of Hague died of a heart attack Friday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his home. A Northumberland County native, Mr. Norris was executive secretary of the Potomac River Fisheries Commission from 1963 until his retirement in 1982. Prior to serving on the commission, Mr. Norris worked for the Farmers Bank of Hague. He served as a sergeant with the Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific during World War II. He was a real-estate broker when appointed to lead the commission in 1963, and resumed real-estate work after his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Booker Norris; two daughters, Betsy Warner Norris of Hague and Jane N. Taylor of Kinsale; two sons, Robert N. Norris III of Richmond and Motley B. Norris of Warsaw; and four grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Carmel United Methodist Church in Kinsale. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, handled the arrangements.

Marcus Anthony "Tony" Newcomb 47 years
Marcus Anthony "Tony" Newcomb, 47, of Sevierville, Tenn., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center. He was the brother of Marsha "Tuttie" Boger and the half brother of Frank Garrett, both of King George County. A native of Fredericksburg, Mr. Newcomb died of an apparent heart attack. In addition to his sister and half brother of King George, Mr. Newcomb is survived by a daughter, Danielle Newcomb, and a son, Kevin Newcomb, both of Waynesville, N.C.; a stepson, Jonathan Harris of Waynesville, N.C.; his father, Lloyd D. "Don" Newcomb of Fredericksburg; two other sisters, Gloria Robinson of Sevierville and Nicholette Balderson of Hartwood; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Jan. 2 at Wells Funeral Home, Waynesville, N.C.

Margaret Rose Shearey Mayberry 94 years
Margaret Rose Shearey Mayberry, 94, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Mary Washington Health Care Center. Mrs. Mayberry had been credit manager for Sears and Bonds Clothing Store in Alton, Ill., and later continued her career in Anacortes, Wash. She was the widow of William Roy Mayberry. Survivors include a daughter, Jean Mayberry Warner of Colonial Beach; two sons, William Mayberry of Snohomish, Wash., and James Mayberry of Lynnwood, Wash.; two brothers; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. A memorial service was held in Anacortes. Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, handled local arrangements.

Nellie Mae Lucas 91 years
Nellie Mae Lucas, 91, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mrs. Lucas was a member of Bayview Baptist Church in Colonial Beach. Survivors include a daughter, Ida M. Hall of Colonial Beach; four sons, Robert F. Allison of Colonial Beach, Robert J. "Bucky" Allison of Colonial Beach, John W. Allison of Cape Coral, Fla., and Albert Lucas of Easley, S.C.; 18 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. Burial was in Rappahannock Baptist Church Cemetery, Newland. The Rev. Kenneth Jubb officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.
