Mary Isabelle Johnson 59 years
Mary Isabelle Johnson, 59, of Dahlgren died of cancer Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Johnson worked as a child-care provider and companion aide. She was a member of New Monrovia Baptist Church in Colonial Beach. Survivors include a daughter, Etta Mae Lucas of Fredericksburg; three sisters, Virginia Ashton of King George County, Martha Washington of San Antonio, Texas, and Jacqueline Chapman of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Robert Brown of Fort Washington, Md.; a granddaughter; and a grandson. A funeral was held Saturday at New Monrovia Baptist Church. Burial was in the Watts family cemetery in Colonial Beach. The Rev. Welford McDowney officiated. Lee Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements.

Dennis Leroy Harding 52 years
Dennis Leroy Harding, 52, of White Oak in Stafford County died of cancer Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at his home. He was the father of Amy Harding of Colonial Beach. Mr. Harding, a native of White Oak, worked as a specialty wood worker for Accent Millwork. He was a member of the Patawomeck Indian tribe. In addition to his daughter of Colonial Beach, Mr. Harding is survived by his wife, Kathy Harding; three other daughters, Crystal Raines and Misty Harding, both of Stafford, and Denise Harding of Petersburg; a son, Dennis D. Harding of Stafford; two sisters, Louise Calvinelli of New Jersey and Geraldine Sullivan of Fredericksburg; three brothers, Joe Harding, Jake Harding and Pete Harding, all of Stafford; and six grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Found & Sons Funeral Chapels, Fredericksburg. Burial was Tuesday in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Charles Leonard officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Dennis Harding Memorial Fund, c/o The National Bank of Fredericksburg, Attention: Gerri Bartman, Box 7207, Fredericksburg, Va. 22404; or to Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave., Suite 210, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.

Harry Wayne Gillespie 75 years
Harry Wayne Gillespie, 75, of Spotsylvania County died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. He was the stepfather of Helen Wine and Earl Irvine of King George County. A native of Clarksburg, W.Va, Mr. Gillespie was a carpenter for D.C. McLean. He was an Army veteran and the widower of Opal Gillespie. In addition to his stepdaughter and stepson of King George, Mr. Gillespie is survived by two daughters, Linda Gillespie of Clarksburg and Judy Gillespie of Pennsylvania; a son, Lonnie Gillespie of Weston, W.Va.; two other stepdaughters, Sharon Nichols and Brenda Pitts, both of Fredericksburg; another stepson, Clyde Irvine of Grafton, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A funeral was held today at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Burial was in Stafford Memorial Park. The Rev. R. Kenneth Brooks officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave., Suite 210, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.

Barbara Ann Gallagher 53 years
Barbara Ann Gallagher, 53, of Montross died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. Mrs. Gallagher was a health-care provider. Survivors include her husband, Charles Roger Gallagher; a daughter, Holly Ann Gallagher of Montross; three sons, Charles Robert Gallagher of Montross, Roger Allen Gallagher of Norlian, N.C., and James Kyle Gallagher of Blacksburg; her parents, Verlan and Mabel Johnson Ball of Harlan, Ky.; six sisters, Suvilla Jewell, Verla Mae Jones, Betty Sue Dean, Zonda Bright, Margaret Usrey and Sylvia Jean Dean, all of Harlan; two brothers, Foyt Ball and Ricky Ball, both of Harlan; and two grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Patricia Sue Gupton and Dawn Gallagher. A funeral was held Tuesday at Providence United Methodist Church, Chiltons. The Rev. Lois Phemister officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Montross Rescue Squad, Box. 1114, Montross, Va. 22520. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, handled the arrangements.

George Henry Alford 77 years
George Henry Alford, 77, of King George County died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Alford, a native of Lancaster County, had retired from the Naval Weapons Laboratory at Dahlgren, and also from the Virginia Department of Transportation, having worked at the scales in Dahlgren. He was a volunteer with the Dahlgren Rescue Squad, a deacon at Shiloh Baptist Church in King George, an accomplished gun Smith and an avid gardener. He was a World War II Army veteran and a Naval reservist. Survivors include four sisters, Elizabeth G. Scott, Mary Lou Hackelton, both of King George, Aline V. Alford and Roberta A. Alford, both of Falmouth; three nieces and four nephews; three great-nieces and five great-nephews; and two great-great-nieces. A funeral was held today at Shiloh Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Bill Bragdon and the Rev. Charles Anderson officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund, 13457 Kings Highway, King George, Va. 22485. Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements.

Charlie Junior Price 73 years
Charlie Junior Price, 73, of Woodbridge died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home. He was the brother of Goldie Bottoms of King George County. Mr. Price was a retired trash truck operator in the Woodbridge area and attended Open Arms Pentecostal Church in Dale City. In addition to his sister of King George, Mr. Price is survived by his wife, Annie L. Price; two other sisters, Affoledu Butcher of Florida and Billie Jean Lipscomb of Woodbridge; and a brother, Jimmy Price of Nokesville. A funeral was held Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bowling Green. The Rev. Elijah Byrd officiated.

Mary Dainese Pillow 84 years
Mary Dainese Pillow, 84, of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and the widow of Garland Henry Pillow. Survivors include two sons, Francis W. Pillow of Colonial Beach and Larry B. Pillow of Butler, Pa.; a sister, Bernice Harris of Keysville, Va.; a brother, Maynard T. Smith of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Pillow was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary D. Mohr; and a son, James G. Pillow. A funeral was held Friday at Midway Baptist Church in Phenix. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Willard Bowen officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Oak Grove Baptist Church, Box 1003, Oak Grove, Va. 22443. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, handled the arrangements.

James Dennis Moreland 58 years
James Dennis Moreland, 58, of Lothian, Md., died of cancer Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at his home. He was the father of James D. Moreland Jr. of King George County. Mr. Moreland had worked as a foreman at Poole and Kent Corporation in Baltimore for over 20 years. He attended the Steamfitters Apprentice School in Washington, and was a member of Steamfitters Local 602 for 40 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Union Church and coached youth sports. In addition to his son of King George, Mr. Moreland is survived by his wife, Jackie J. Moreland; two daughters; two other sons; a sister; three brothers; and six grandchildren. A funeral was held Saturday at Hardesty Funeral Home, Galesville, Md. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Lombardi Cancer Center, Attention: Development Office, 3800 Reservoir Road, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20007; or North Beach Union Church, 8909 Dayton Ave., North Beach, Md. 20714.

Katrina Valente Mickens 30 years
Katrina Valente Mickens, 30, of Fredericksburg died of cancer Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the Washington Hospital Center. She was the sister of Kevin Mickens and Corey Mickens, both of King George County. A Fredericksburg native, Miss Mickens was a fifth-grade teacher at Harrison Road Elementary School in Spotsylvania County. She was a graduate of Virginia State University in Petersburg, and was a member of Union Bell Baptist Church in Stafford County. In addition to her brothers of King George, Miss Mickens is survived by her parents, George and Mamie S. Mickens of Stafford; four sisters, Pearl Coleman of Fredericksburg, Patricia Smith and Helen Banks, both of Spotsylvania, and Mary Martin of Stafford; and five other brothers, James Coleman of Woodbridge, Phillip Coleman of Caroline County, Reginald Coleman of Stafford, and Timothy Mickens and George Mickens Jr., both of Spotsylvania. A funeral was held Monday at Union Bell Baptist Church. Burial was in the Barnett and Boxley family cemetery in Stafford. The Rev. Clarence Mays officiated. Bailey Funeral Service handled the arrangements.

Hunter James Madeiros infant
Hunter James Madeiros, infant son of Mary Twigg and Bryan Madeiros of Colonial Beach, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. In addition to his parents, Hunter is survived by a sister, Georgia Madeiros; his maternal grandmother, Kimberly D. Herbert of Colonial Beach; two aunts; and several cousins. A graveside service was held today in Historyland Memorial Park in King George County. Found & Sons Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, handled the arrangements.

Edith W. "Edie" Dunkum 51 years
Edith W. "Edie" Dunkum, 51, of Colonial Beach died at her home Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, after a long illness. Born in Washington, she was a former resident of Falls Church. She had worked as an administrative assistant at Control Data in Arlington, and more recently worked at Bowie's Restaurant in Oak Grove. Survivors include her husband, R. Thomas Dunkum; and a sister, Patty King of Franklin, N.J. A memorial service was held Saturday at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. The Rev. Dick Jackson officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to a favorite charity.

Dorothy Mae Conley 73 years
Dorothy Mae Conley, 73, of Stafford County died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at her residence. She was the mother of Evelyn Coulter of King George County Mrs. Conley had resided in Dumfries from 1945 to 1983, when she moved to Stafford. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Triangle. In addition to her daughter of King George, Mrs. Conley is survived by four other daughters, Kathleen Clark, Dorothy Trumpower and Shirley Kedzierski, all of Triangle, and Melvina "Frances" Fields of Stafford; four sisters, Helen Jones and Dawn Treat, both of Fredericksburg, Sally Davis of Stafford and Ellen Clark of Petersburg, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday, Dec. 31, at First Assembly of God. Burial was in Dumfries Cemetery. The Rev. Clifford Burroughs officiated. Mountcastle Funeral Home, Dale City, handled the arrangements.

Robert Lewis Ware 54 years
Robert Lewis Ware, 54, of Oak Grove died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Born in Westmoreland County, Mr. Ware had retired as a laborer from White Packing Co. He was a member of Little Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Anne Ware; two sisters, Shirley Jenkins of Laurel, Md., and Annie Rogers of Washington. A funeral was held Saturday at Little Zion Baptist Church, Oak Grove. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. William B. Scott officiated. Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, Nomini Grove, handled the arrangements.

Lila Crouse Stevens 65 years
Lila Crouse Stevens, 65, of Sparta, N.C., formerly of King George County, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Wake Forest, N.C. Born in Chester, Pa., Mrs. Stevens moved to King George at an early age. She had retired as a civilian personnel manager from Fort Belvoir after 32 years. She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in the Passapatanzy area of King George and was an Army veteran. Survivors include three sons, Nicki Garcia and John Stevens, both of King George, and Stevie Garcia of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Virginia Brooks of King George; three brothers, James Crouse of Stafford County, Frankie Crouse of King George, and Harvey Ward of Grand Rapids, Mich.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held last Sunday at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. Burial was in Mountain View Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Willis Dempsey officiated.
