Harvey H. Barrett 82
Harvey H. Barrett, 82, of Falmouth died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002. He was the father of George E. Barrett and grandfather of Gene Barrett, both of King George County.
Mr. Barrett was the widower of Bertha K. Barrett and was retired from the City of Fredericksburg as head of the maintenance department. He was a Marine Corps veteran, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Falmouth Baptist Church and American Legion Post 55.
In addition to his son and grandson of King George, Mr. Barrett is survived by another son, Edward L. Barrett of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Elizabeth Rollins of Falmouth; two other grandchildren, Petra K. Gidlund of Denver and Crystal Weeks of Mississippi; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday, Sept. 24, at Falmouth Baptist Church. Entombment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Leslie A. Powers officiated.

Joe Atkins 86
Joseph H. "Joe" Atkins, 86, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, in Colonial Beach.
Born in Wythe County, Mr. Atkins had retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, after 25 years. He was a World War II Army veteran, having received the purple heart and bronze star and was a former prisoner of war serving in Europe.
He attended Oak Grove Baptist Church at Oak Grove and was a member of Max Meadows Presbyterian Church in Wythe. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Virginia M. Atkins; three sons, Steve M. Atkins of Lorton, Okla., David R. Atkins of Scotia, N.Y., and Joseph W. Atkins of Colonial Beach; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held today at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in Colonial Beach. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George County. The Rev. Willard Bowen officiated.

Alfred Gordon White 89
Alfred Gordon White, 89, of New York died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in New York. He was the oldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Irving White of King George County.
Mr. White is survived by his wife, Mildred White; two sons, Richard White and Douglas White; two sisters, Margaret Golightly of Winchester and Catherine Acey of Culpeper County; and a brother, Sidney "Marvin" White of Lynchburg.
In addition to his parents, Mr. White was also preceded in death by a daughter, five brothers and two sisters.
Burial will be private.
Elbert P. Mac Macomber 67
Elbert P. "Mac" Macomber Jr., 67, of Colonial Beach died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Greenport, N.Y., he had retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant after 20 years of service. He was also the former owner-operator of Macomber Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning in Westmoreland County.
His memberships included the Masonic Lodge 199, Order of Eastern Star 177, Moose Lodge 1267 and the American Legion, all in Colonial Beach. He was also an associate member of the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad Auxiliary.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Macomber; two daughters, Vicki Ballentine of Woodbridge and Cindi Morgan of Colonial Beach; his mother, Mary Macomber, and a sister, Dorothy Horton, both of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday, Sept. 16, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in Colonial Beach. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George County. The Rev. Richard Headley officiated.

Annie Mae "Anna" Johnson, 72, of King George County died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, in Colonial Beach.
Born in King George, Mrs.
Johnson worked as a cook and was a member of Little Ark Baptist Church in King George. She was the daughter of the late Raymond and Blanche Barclay.

Sadie S. Hall, 83, of Montross died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002.
She was the widow of Howard Samuel Hall and was a member of Currioman Baptist Church.
Survivors include her three sisters, Louise

Thelma M. Clare 81
Thelma M. Clare of King George County died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Mary Washington Health Center in Colonial Beach.
Born Sept. 12, 1910, at Edgehill in King George, Mrs. Clare was a homemaker and very active in the businesses of her husband and family.
She was a member of Potomac Baptist Church and active in previous years with the Daughters of America, King George Council 26; Women's Club; Garden Club; and King George Fall Festival Committee.
She was the widow of L.V. Clare, a prominent King George businessman.
Survivors include her son, Robert L. Clare III, a daughter, Ellen Clare Washington, and granddaughters, Linda Clare and Dixie Lee Washington Tolley, all of King George; two sisters, Ercell Mothershead Breedon of King George and Elizabeth Mothershead Gill of Ruckersville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Friday, Sept. 13, in Potomac Baptist Church cemetery in King George. The Rev. Dennis Newton officiated.

Deets M. Beall, 83, of Colonial Beach died at his home Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002.
Born in Clarksburg, Md., he had retired as a truck driver for Armstrong Oil Co., and was the widower of Mazie Mae Beall.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Beall Langowski of Frederick, Md.; a son, Stephen D. Beall of Frederick; a sister, Violet V. Howell; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Saturday, Sept. 14, in Historyland Memorial Park in King George County. The Rev. Clinton Owens officiated.

Eunice Settle Atwill 103
Eunice Settle Atwill, 103, affectionately known as "NuNu" to her friends and family and formerly of Montross, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, in Tappahannock.
Born in 1899 at Lara, Northumberland County, the daughter of Frank Settle and his wife Eunice Pike Healy, she taught in schools throughout the Northern Neck at Callao, Cople, Piney Grove, Sharps and Templemans before her marriage to Robert Atwill in 1931. Following her husband's death in 1960 she became manager of the gift shop at Stratford Hall.
She is survived by her niece, Elizabeth "Lou" Yeatman and great nephew, Allen Yeatman of Montross, with whom "NuNu" made her home for 35 years before moving to the Skilled Nursing Facility at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital in 1995. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Virginia Settle of Dahlgren and Lillian Settle of Spotsylvania County; other nieces, Willianna Settle Abrams of Seminole, Fla., and Mary Settle
Johnson of Panama City, Fla.; nephews, Frank Settle III, Robert W. Settle, Richard H. Settle, and Fairfax H. Settle of Tappahannock.
A funeral was held at Nomini Baptist Church in Templemans on Monday, Sept. 16. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Ernest Robinson 83
Ernest Robinson, 83, of Covington died August 31, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He was the brother of Adell Robinson, Edna Jordan, Dora Robinson and Mandy Bundy, all of King George County.
Mr. Robinson was born on Oct. 7, 1918, and had been employed as a maintenance worker for apartment complexes.
In addition to his brother and sisters of King George, Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Davis Robinson; a son, Ernest Robinson Jr. of Warrenton; a stepson, William Davis of Clinton, Md.; and another brother, Earl Robinson of Fredericksburg.
A funeral was held Monday, Sept. 9, at Lee Funeral Home in King George. Burial was in Culpeper National Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Robinson officiated.
James Richard Gros 86
James Richard "Dick" Gros, 86, of Dahlgren died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Heritage Hall Health Care in King George County.
Born in Delphi, Ind., Mr. Gros had retired as an electronics engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. He restored the organ at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in King George and also built the choir organ.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia W. Gros; a daughter, Sylvia King of Harrisonburg; two sons, James W. Gros of Harbor City, Calif., and Eugene W. Gros of Eagle Point, Ore.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Virginia Gros; and two grandsons, Charles Gros and Seth McClaine.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The body was donated to the Virginia Anatomical Division in Richmond for research.
