Edith Wheeler Brooks 96 years
Edith Wheeler Brooks, 96, of Spotsylvania County died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at her home. She was the mother of Agnes B. Oakey of King George County. A lifelong resident of Spotsylvania, Mrs. Brooks was the widow of Marcus A. Brooks. She was also a member of the Church of the Brethren and an avid gardener. In addition to her daughter of King George, Mrs. Brooks is survived by four other daughters, Mildred B. Ray of Spotsylvania, Lillian B. Self, Alma B. Henderson and Joyce B. Newton, all of Stafford County; four sons Franklin Brooks, Jasper W. Brooks and Melvin Brooks of Spotsylvania, and Roy Lee Brooks of the home; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral was held today at Covenant Funeral Service Chapel. Burial was in a family cemetery in Spotsylvania. The Rev. H. Lowell Self officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Spotsylvania Rescue Squad, Box 101, Spotsylvania, Va. 22553 or Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave., Suite 210, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.

Sara Frances Bragdon 81 years
Sara Frances Bragdon, 81, of King George County died Monday, March 11, 2002, at Carriage Hill Nursing Home. Born in Dallas and formerly of Brownwood, Texas, Mrs. Bragdon had been a professor of psychology at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. She was a graduate of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Brownwood and was the widow of Kerlin Bragdon. Survivors include two daughters, Sue Wright of Perth, Australia, and Judy Bragdon of Istanbul, Turkey; two sons, William A. Bragdon of King George and John G. Bragdon of Dallas; and seven grandchildren. A funeral was held Friday, March 15, at Shiloh Baptist Church in King George. Her son, the Rev. William A. Bragdon, officiated. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the International Mission Board, SBC, Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23230. Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements.

John Austin Watts 75 years
John Austin Watts, 75, of Fredericksburg died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. He was the father of Roy D. Watts of King George County. Born in Stafford County, Mr. Watts had retired as a carpenter. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose 1655 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 4123. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was the widower of Ellen Hockaday Watts. In addition to his son of King George, Mr. Watts is survived by another son, Johnny L. Watts of Stafford; a sister, Mary Audrey Spindle of Spotsylvania County; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Douglas D. Milliner will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Mary Ann Sorrell 69 years
Mary Ann Sorrell, 69, of King George County died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Stafford County, Mrs. Sorrell was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in King George. She was a flower gardener, and enjoyed sewing and bird watching. She was the widow of Charles R. Sorrell. Survivors include two daughters, Faith Smith of King George and Deborah Stephens of Fredericksburg; six sons, Charles R. Sorrell Jr. of Clarksville, Tenn., Wade Sorrell of Martinsville, W.Va., Ritchie Sorrell of King George, Kenneth Sorrell of Fredericksburg, Byron Sorrell and David Cling, both of the home; three brothers, William Dillon of Fredericksburg, Frank McConkie of Westmoreland County and Hazel Bibb of North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Historyland Memorial Park in King George. The Rev. Sherman Davis and the Rev. M.A. Timberlake will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, c/o Trudy Clifton, 113 Tallpines Ave., Locust Grove, Va. 22508; or to Hospice Support Care Inc., 2119 Lafayette Blvd., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.

Ernest Edward Rose 86 years
Ernest Edward Rose, 86, of Shiloh died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. A lifelong resident of Shiloh, Mr. Rose retired from the Naval Surface Weapons Center, Dahlgren, in 1984 after 34 years. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and its Senior Men's Class. He had served as a deacon and as a member of the building and grounds committee, the finance committee and the cemetery committee. Mr. Rose was a member of the King George Ruritan Club for 25 years. He loved farming, working in the garden, animals, fishing, hunting, baseball, football and refinishing furniture. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Rose; a daughter, Donna Gail Loan of Covington; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Rose was also the father of the late Barbara Elaine Rose. A funeral was held this afternoon at Shiloh Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Bill Bragdon and the Rev. Cecil Marsh officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund, 13457 Kings Highway, King George, Va. 22485. Nash and Slaw Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements.

Archie Newton 92 years
Archie Newton, 92, of the White Oak area of Stafford County died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Woodmont Center. He was the father of Betty Jubb of Colonial Beach and Alfred Gordon Newton of King George County. A Stafford native, Mr. Newton grew up on a farm at the end of Belle Plains Road. He had retired as a waterman and a farmer. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Stafford. In addition to his daughter of Colonial Beach and son of King George, Mr. Newton is survived by his wife, Esther Carver Newton; another daughter, Shirley Seay of Stafford; another son, Bobby Kenneth Newton of Stafford; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A funeral was held Saturday, March 9, at Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Ernest R. Babel officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 8330 Fletcher's Chapel Road, King George, Va. 22485. Harold L. Meadows 67 years
Harold L. Meadows, 67, of King George County died at his home Monday, March 4, 2002. Born in Covington, Mr. Meadows had worked as a farmer for Frank B. Taylor in King George for 45 years. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He was the widower of Mary E. Meadows. Survivors include a sister, Myrtle Lee Meadows of Port Royal; two brothers, Tony Meadows of Arlington and Richard F. Meadows of King George; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held Thursday, March 7, in Mountain View Baptist Church cemetery in King George. The Rev. Willis Dempsey and the Rev. Dennis Newton officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Mountain View Baptist Church, 6713 Passapatanzy Drive, King George, Va. 22485. Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, handled the arrangements. Betty M. Morgan Betty Mignonette Morgan, 91, of King George County died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Hughes Home in Fredericksburg. A King George native, Mrs. Morgan was a member of Potomac Baptist Church there. She was the widow of James H. Morgan. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Frances Taylor of King George; three sisters, Fannie Heimer and Virginia Purks, both of King George, and Juanita Sutton of Spotsylvania County; two brothers, Curtis Marshall and Ivias Marshall, both of King George; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Monday, March 11, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Dennis L. Newton officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Potomac Baptist Church General Fund, Box 701, King George, Va. 22485.

Floria Hewlin Lynch 91 years
Floria Hewlin Lynch, 91, of Colonial Beach died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Halifax, N.C., Mrs. Lynch attended public schools there. She was a member of Grant's Hill Baptist Church, Leedstown. She was the widow of Henry Merritt Lynch. She did domestic work for 40 years and later became a companion to the sick and needy. Survivors include four daughters, Beatrice Winfield of Washington, Flora Colbert of Philadelphia, Lenia Dixon of Mount Holly and Elizabeth Davis of Colonial Beach; a sister, Reather Alston of Enfield, N.C.; 21 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a niece and three nephews. A funeral was held Saturday, March 9, at Grant's Hill Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Lloyd Fox officiated. Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home, Lancaster, handled the arrangements.

Diane Marie Buck Lambert 31 years
Diane Marie Buck Lambert, 31, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, after a short illness. Mrs. Lambert worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for several years and was an organ donor. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth L. Lambert; a daughter, Gabrielle M. Lambert of the home; a son, Sean T. Buck of the home; her parents, Al and Janis Garcia of Stafford; a sister, Katherine Y. Callaway of Stafford; three brothers, Louis E. Garcia and Steven C. Garcia, both of South Riding, and Michael A. Garcia of Potomac Falls; her maternal grandmother, Marjorie W. Lash of Clarkdale, Ariz.; and her paternal grandparents, Jesus A. and Alfonsina L. Garcia of Nogales, Ariz. She was also the mother of the late Ronnie L. Lambert. A funeral was held Saturday, March 9, at St. William of York Catholic Church in Stafford County. The Rev. Paul Eversole officiated. Burial was private. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Diane Marie Buck Lambert Trust Fund, 42679 Freedom St., South Riding, Va. 20152. Sue Elizabeth Jones 86 years
Sue Elizabeth Jones, 86, of Fredericksburg died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was the sister of Ann Jones of King George County. A native of Spotsylvania County, Mrs. Jones had retired from C&P Telephone Co. She was a member of Massaponax Church and of Telephone Pioneers of America. She was the widow of Joseph Jones. In addition to her sister of King George, Mrs. Jones is survived by two sons, Franklin F. Jones and Reginald E. Jones, both of Spotsylvania; two other sisters, Mary Smith of Spotsylvania and Virginia Sheffield of Rose Hill, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Tuesday, March 12, at the mausoleum chapel in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. David Short officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Diabetes Association, Rappahannock Chapter, Box 1385, Fredericksburg, Va. 22402. Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg,handled the arrangements.

Bettie B. Johnson 87 years
Bettie B. Johnson, 87, of Montross died Monday, March 4, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Johnson attended public schools in Westmoreland County and was a member of Siloam Baptist Church in Montross. Well thought of in her community, she was always willing to help someone in need. She was the widow of Irving Johnson. Survivors include two daughters, Helen Ashton and Mary Hackett, both of Montross; five sons, Irving Johnson Jr., Clyde Johnson, Clarence Johnson, Earl Johnson and Robert Johnson, all of Montross; two sisters, Catherine Johnson and Jessie Smith, both of Montross; two brothers, James Tate of Montross and Charles Tate of Washington; 22 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Allen Tate and Walter Johnson. A funeral was held Thursday, March 7, at Siloam Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Clarence Long officiated. Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home, Lancaster, handled the arrangements.

Marie Anna Engel 72 years
Marie Anna Engel, 72, of Orange County died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville. She was the mother of Mark Anthony Engel of King George County. Mrs. Engel was born in Hartsville, S.C. She was the widow of Charles Elmer Engel. In addition to her son of King George, Mrs. Engel is survived by three other sons, David Charles Engel of Jonesville, N.C., Calvin Ira Engel of Leesburg and Charles Elmer Engel of Orange; two sisters, Edith Huggins and Betty Hewitt, both of South Carolina; a brother, Murray Johnson Jr. of South Carolina; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Engel was also the mother of the late Myron Jay Engel and Stanley Eugene Engel. A funeral was held Tuesday, March 12, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Orange. Burial was in Glen Haven Cemetery in Glen Burnie, Md. The Rev. Forest Porter officiated. Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, handled the arrangements.
