Roy Edwin Brune 83
Roy Edwin Brune, 83, of Montross died Thursday, May 15, 2003.
Mr. Brune was a retired bank examiner for the FDIC, a World War II Army veteran, a member of Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, the Elks Northern Neck Post 2666, where he served as past exalted ruler, and the United Methodist Men's Group. He was also treasurer and member of the board of directors for the Montross Rescue Squad.
Survivors include his wife, Frances H. Brune; a daughter, Betty Jane Turnbull of Durham, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Susan H. Staples of Colonial Beach; a stepson, Robert L. Hinson of Springfield; two sisters, Gladys Hammond of Venice, Fla., and Helen Larssen of Sacramento, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Harper.
A funeral was held Saturday, May 17, at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment was Tuesday, May 20, in Culpeper National Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Dameron officiated.
Pallbearers were Wallace Turnbull III, Andrew Roy Turnbull, Michael Straughan, Ryan Staples, Brad Hinson and Chris Nardella.
Memorial contributions may be made to Montross Rescue Squad, Box 1174, Montross, Va. 22520; or to a favorite charity.

Belle Cannon Smith 96
Belle Cannon Smith, 96, of King George County died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Woodmont Center.
She was the first woman barber in Fredericksburg and served clients for 50 years in the city. She was a member of Mount Zion Church of God.
Survivors include one daughter, W. June Trigger of King George; three sons, Jack L. Cannon, U.S. Marine Corps retired, of Raton, N.M., retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. James R. Cannon of Los Lunas, N.M., and Lonnie A. Cannon of Orange County. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Joseph F. Cannon.
A funeral was held Wednesday, April 30, at Covenant Funeral Service in Fredericksburg. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Charles Sullivan officiated.

Ernest G. Prevatt 85
Retired Army Maj. Ernest G. Prevatt, 85, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, April 13, 2003.
A memorial service was held Saturday, May 3, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Colonial Beach. The Rev. Ronald Okrasinski officiated.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 203 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.

Sidney Marion Peterson 74
Sidney Marion Peterson, 74, of King George County died Monday, April 28, 2003, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond.
Born in Baton Rouge, La., Mr. Peterson was the former owner/operator of Harmony Park in King George. He had retired as a major in the U.S. Air Force after 20 years and was a former school teacher in King George.
He was a former member of the Board of Supervisors in King George for eight years and had run for the House of Delegates, 99th District. He earned a law degree from the D.C. School of Law.
Survivors include his wife, Anna M. Peterson of King George; four daughters, Christine M. Peterson of Silver Spring, Md., Cheryl A. Peterson of Colorado, Terese Peterson of Friendsville, Md., and Jeanette L. Wester of Hickory, N.C.; two sons, Michael B. Peterson and Timothy M. Peterson, both of King George; two sisters, Norma Rose of Port Arthur, Texas, and Rose Grado of St. Charles, La.; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church in King George. Commital of ashes, with military honors, will follow in Historyland Memorial Park in King George. The Rev. Sherman Davis will officiate.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to a favorite charity.
Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, is handling arrangements.

William Lenzi 87
William Lenzi, 87, passed away Sunday, April 27, at the home of his son, William S. Lenzi and his wife, Merry Ellen, of Falmouth. He was the grandfather of William Lenzi and his wife, Katherine, of King George County.
Mr. Lenzi was born in Sharon, Pa., May 5, 1915. His wife, Mary, preceded him in death in 1992.
He leaves behind three other grandchildren, Mark Lenzi of North Carolina, Lisa Iden and her husband, Jack, of Spotsylvania County, and Luke Lenzi of the home; also four great-grandchildren, Cristal and Hunter Iden and William Christopher and Regan Lenzi.
Services were private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Anne's Church, 601 Fruit Ave., Farrell, Pa. 16121.

Helen Thour Himes 81
Helen Thour Himes, 81, of Colonial Beach and Baltimore, Md., passed away Friday, May 2, 2003, after a long and valiant battle with cancer.
While in Colonial Beach, she resided in and maintained the Irving Avenue family home, Endurance, which was built by her grandfather in 1899.
She was an employee of the National Security Agency, where she served as administrative assistant to the assistant director. She later became the program director for the agency's employment program for disadvantaged Baltimore youth.
During the Vietname War, she served as a volunteer American Red Cross gray lady, working with returning service personnel.
She loved homemaking, nature, gardening and cooking. She won several blue ribbons for pies at Maryland county fairs. She also enjoyed visiting and participating in church services of all denominations. She believed strongly in the brotherhood of man. Hers was a life well-lived and she will be missed.
She is survived by one son, Martin Himes of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and two daughters, Helen "Bonnie" Himes of Baltimore and Colonial Beach and Nancy Himes of Baltimore.
In accordance with the deceased's wishes, there will be no viewing, and interment of ashes will be private.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of doing something special for oneself.

Laura Ellen Coppage 73
Laura Ellen Coppage, 73, of King George County, loving mother "Nana" and devoted friend, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
A lifelong resident of King George, she had retired from the Naval Space Command after 33 years of service. She was a member of Oakland Baptist Church in King George.
Survivors include three daughters, Kay Oliver and her husband, Bobby, of Chesapeake, Joyce Thorne and her husband, Jim, of Mount Holly, and Jean Fraysse of King George; a son, Linnie Coppage of King George; two sisters, Elva Francis of Seattle, Wash., and Alice Mullins of LaPlata, Md.; a brother, Ernest Green of King George; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Saturday, May 3, at Oakland Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Dahlgren Rescue Squad, Box 1375, Dahlgren, Va. 22448.

Mary A. Quarles 75
Mary A. Quarles, 75, of King George County died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mrs. Quarles, a housewife, was born in Waldorf, Md. She was the widow of Thomas C. Quarles.
Survivors include two daughters, Diana Brown of King George and Karen Meeker of Ocala, Fla.; five sisters and two brothers, all of southern Maryland; and two grandchildren, Carolyn Brown of Alexandria and Roger Dingess Jr. of Ocala, Fla.
A funeral was held Monday, April 28, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in King George. The Rev. Ted James officiated. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to a charity of choice.

Deevie H. Martin 46
Deevie Harmon Martin, 46, of Stafford County died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was the sister of Terri Nelson of King George County.
Additional survivors include her husband, Paul D. Martin; two sons, John Preston Beach of Spotsylvania County and Dennis Wayne Beach Jr. of Stafford; two daughters, Ida Curry "Ibbey" Beach and Kimberley Anne Martin, both of Stafford; her parents, John and Ida Harmon of Stafford; a brother, John Harmon Jr. of Port Royal; two aunts, Eleanor Reynolds of Fredericksburg and Margaret Boutchyard of Falmouth; and two grandchildren, Dennis Wayne Beach III and Aellana Ashlyn Beach.
A funeral was held Monday, April 28, at Covenant Funeral Service in Fredericksburg. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. M. Paul Curry and the Rev. Leslie A. Powers officiated.
Memorials may be made to Stafford County Fire Department, Box 127, Stafford, Va. 22555; Potomac Hills Fire and Rescue, 729 Widewater Road, Stafford, Va. 22554; or to Widewater Fire and Rescue, 749 Widewater Road, Stafford, Va. 22554.

Jeremiah Johnson 38
Jeremiah A. Johnson, 38, of Port Royal, formerly of King George County, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
He was a member of Union Bethel Baptist Church in King George.
Survivors include his wife, Stephney, two sons, Antwane and Tyreese, and a daughter, LaKeysha, all of Port Royal; his father, Franklin C. Johnson of Waldorf, Md.; his mother and stepfather, Martha Hundley and John Hundley of King George; two brothers, Franklin A. Johnson of King George and Larry C. Johnson of Montclair, N.J.; and five sisters, Barbara Ann Beverly of Stafford, Geraldine Payton of Las Vegas, Nev., Christine Jackson of Waldorf, Md., and Erica Woodlund and Gail Johnson, both of King George.
A funeral will be held Thursday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Port Royal. Burial will be in Peace and Light Cemetery in King George. The Rev. Leonard G. Bland will officiate.
The body may be viewed until 8 p.m. today at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home in Port Royal, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Bill Johnson 69
Willard A. "Bill" Johnson, 69, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Westmoreland County, he had retired as a computer operator from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, after 34 years. After his retirement, he worked as a custodian for King George Parks and Recreation. He was a member of New Monrovia Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the deacon board and program committee, former superintendent of the Sunday school and member of the Spiritual Chorus. He was also a former member of the Gospel Mix Choir in King George, and was an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel M. Johnson; a daughter, Jawanda Lee; four stepdaughters, Linda Pratt of King George County, Lorraine Richards, Brenda Turner and Patricia Turner of Colonial Beach; two stepsons, Earl Turner of Colonial Beach and Robert Turner of Fredericksburg; four sisters, Maurice Johnson, Bessie and Carsile McDowney of Colonial Beach, Annette Brown of Fort Washington, Md.; and 14 stepgrandchildren.
A funeral was held Friday, April 25, at New Monrovia Baptist Church. Burial was in the Johnson family cemetery in Colonial Beach. The Rev. Welford McDowney officiated.
Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, handled arrangements.
