Rosalie Schmaus 100 years
Rosalie Schmaus, 100, of Sisseton, S.D., left this life on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at her home. She lived to love 11 children, now ages 55-82, 60 grandchildren, 114 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren, with more descendants on the way.
Among her grandchildren are Debra (wife of Chris) VanBriesen of Stafford, Dori (wife of Mark) Sewell of King George, David (husband of Kathy) Tarrell of Sioux Falls, S.D., and formerly of Fredericksburg, Tammy (wife of Mike) Mitzel of Chamberlain, S.D., and formerly of King George, and Steven Tarrell of King George. Among her great-grandchildren are James & Bethany VanBriesen, Alexander & Evan Tarrell, and Lucas, Alicia, Jonathan, Cole, & in utero baby Mitzel. She is also survived by two siblings and numerous extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, her parents, and 11 siblings.
Rosalie George was born March 12, 1903, in South Dakota. The third oldest of 14 children, she helped with child-rearing, serving meals, milking cows, and other farm chores most of her life. She graduated high school and attended college for a short time before returning home to help care for a newborn brother.
She married Edward Schmaus Feb. 7, 1920, and together they farmed and raised their own large family. Although they left the Sisseton area in the late 1920s and 1930s to homestead property in Canada and Idaho, they returned both times after a short period and lived most of their lives in the Sisseton area. They were married 63 years before Edward's death in 1983.
During her long lifetime, she saw many changes in the world, but the two things that always meant the most to her were her faith and her family. She was baptized at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton and was a life-long Catholic. She had a great devotion to St. Jude and prayed often that he would ask God to work needed miracles for her. Among prayers favorably answered were the safe returns of her oldest son from his tour of duty as a ball turret gunner and another son in the infantry during World War II and of many other relatives from their military tours during the decades of war and peacetime, and the receipt of a needed organ transplant for her oldest granddaughter.
She lived by the motto "Give your best to the world, and the best will come back to you," and that outlook and her faith carried her through the Great Depression, nursing her children through diphtheria, whooping cough, measles, and polio epidemics, and living through all her hardships and joys. Although she never had much in material wealth, she was generous in giving what she had to those in need. For example, she gave her newest clothes to charity and wore her old ones and always offered food to anyone, a relative or not, who stopped by her door.
She remained active all her life, delighting grandkids by going down slides at the park with them until she was in her 80s, and picking berries and making pies from scratch by memory into her late 90s.
When medical personnel assumed her mental faculties had declined with age and asked if she could still say her "abc's," she impishly told them she could say them backwards and promptly and deftly did so. Although her health had declined the last several months of her life, her faith and spirit stayed strong. On her 100th birthday, she sang along with a granddaughter singing her favorite song, "On this Day, O Beautiful Mother." She spent her last days laughing with family members and friends.
