Philip Grove 91 years
Philip Grove, 91, of Heritage Hall Health Care in King George died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital.
There are no immediate survivors. The body was cremated. No funeral is planned. Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, is handling arrangements.

James Edward Gouldman 77 years
James Edward Gouldman, 77, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born at Colonial Beach, Mr. Gouldman was a former poultry farmer and service manager for Dow Chemical. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church at Oak Grove.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Gouldman of Montross; two daughters, Dani Dodd of Colonial Beach and Cathy Perry of Leedstown; two brothers, Gene Gouldman and Wilbur Davis Gouldman, both of Colonial Beach; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Kirk Gouldman.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Prentice Kinser officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443; or to St. Peter's Episcopal Church Outreach Fund, c/o Wanda Mason, 601 Colonial Ave., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.

Ethel Myrtle Dodson 86 years
Ethel Myrtle Dodson, 86, of Colonial Beach died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was a retired machine operator for IBM.
Mrs. Dodson was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard E. "Chick" Dodson, and a stepson, Louis M. Dodson.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara J. Smith of Colonial Beach and Margaret A. Hofmann of Titusville, Fla.; two sons, John E. Travers of Ocala, Fla., and Ernest H. Travers of Germantown, Md.; one stepson, Bernard W. Dodson of Arlington; two brothers, Ernest M. Wickstrand of Waynesboro, Pa., and Raymond E. Wickstrand of Richmond; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A viewing/service was held on Monday, Jan. 19, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel.
A graveside service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 20, in Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington.
Memorial contributions may be made to Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.

John Middleton Branson 92 years
John Middleton Branson, 92, of Montross passed to his heavenly reward Friday, Jan. 16, 2004. He was the husband of Mary Carter Harris Branson until her death in 1970. He was a retired maintenance supervisor for Westmoreland County schools and for the Town of Montross. He served on the Montross Town Council, and was a longtime faithful worker at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, where he belonged to the United Methodist Men and served as a church trustee.
John M. is survived by his wife, Earleane Robins Branson; his daughters, Jane Carter Branson and Evalyn B. Sanford and her husband, Billy, all of Montross; his stepchildren, Betty M. Eby of Tappahannock, Robert A. Mason of Newport News and Richard F. Mason and his wife, Cathy, of Hampton; three grandchildren, Becky S. Bowen and her husband, Eddie, Richard C. Sisson and his wife, Melanie, and Bill Sanford and his wife, Nicole; stepgranddaughter Elizabeth Eby; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary Bowen, Nicholas Bowen, Megan Hundley and Ryan Sisson.
The family received friends at Welch Funeral Home, Montross, on Sunday, Jan 18, with Masonic rites.
A funeral was held on Monday, Jan. 19, at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Montross Rescue Squad or to Andrew Chapel UMC Cemetery Fund.

Margaret Sorley Woodworth 96 years
Margaret Sorley Woodworth, 96, of Salem, Oregon died December 24, 2003 in Salem. She is survived by two sons, Dr. E. Patterson Woodworth of King George/Fredericksburg, VA and Dr. Bruce M. Woodworth of Salem, Oregon, 6 grandchildren and 6 greatchildren.

Mamie B. Ray 87 years
Mamie B. Ray, 87, of Newark, N.J., died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark. She was a native of King George County and had retired from domestic work.
She was a member of Union Bell Baptist Church in Stafford, where she was a member of the Deaconess Board, the Women's Prayer Ministry and the Gospel Chorus.
The widow of Isaac E. Ray, she is survived by two sons, Lewis I. Ray of Stafford County and David E. Ray of Scotch Plains, N.J.; a sister, Gladys Newman of Alexandria; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held on Saturday, Jan. 10, at Union Bell Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clarence E. Mays, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The body was viewed on Friday, Jan. 9, at A.L. Bennett Funeral Home, Fredericksburg, and one hour before the service Saturday at the church.

Margaret P. Powell 73 years
Margaret P. Powell, 73, of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Mechanicsville.
Born in Washington, Mrs. Powell was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, James A. Powell Sr. of Colonial Beach; a daughter, Jennifer Stewart of Colonial Beach; two sons, Berkley Muse and James C. Powell, both of Colonial Beach; three sisters, Dorothy Duke, Mary Sue Paddy and Alice Hafner, all of Oak Grove; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Nancy Williams Marsh 63 years
Nancy Williams Marsh, 63, of Colonial Beach died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, is handling arrangements, which are incomplete.

John Clayton Craig 66 years
John Clayton Craig, 66, of King George County died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at his home. He was a member of Good News Tabernacle Baptist Church, King George. He was a lover of bluegrass music and was an accomplished guitar player. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Welch Craig.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Craig of King George; two sons, Keith Craig of Chesapeake and Gary Lee Craig Sr. of King George; a brother, Michael Craig of Richmond, Ohio; a sister, Elizabeth Gipe of Florida; three grandchildren, Kevin and Austin Craig, both of Chesapeake and Gary Lee Craig Jr. of Fredericksburg; a sister-in-law, Pat Craig of Houston, Texas; four aunts, Mickey Hiles of Cincinnati, Ohio, Shelby Richards of LaGrange, Ky., Opal McCarty of Houston, Texas, and Virgie Bickett of Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Billy Bowler and the Rev. Dave Sisson officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family received friends on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the funeral home.

Alice C. Corbin 84 years
Alice C. Corbin, 84, formerly of Stafford County died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Retreat Hospital in Richmond.
Born Oct. 16, 1919, in Stafford, she was the widow of Frederick Corbin of Stafford.
She was the aunt of Maynard Beverly of King George. In additional to her newphew of King George, she is survived by one sister, Beatrice Tyler of Stafford; three other nephews, Osbourne Beverly of Fredericksburg, Reginald Beverly of Pasadena, Md., and Rudolph Beverly of Pasadena; and four nieces, Delores Taylor and Patricia Wayne, both of Chesterfield, Marilyn Gallaway of Georgia and Theresa Holt of Piscathway, N.J.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Mount Olive Baptist Church, Stafford, with the Rev. Ronald William Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery in Stafford.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Bailey Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, and one hour before the service time Thursday at the church.

Bessie Ann Bumbrey 51 years
Bessie Ann Bumbrey, 51, of King George died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the home of her parents, after a battle with brain cancer. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Chuch, where she sang with Voices of Hope and was a member of Women's Ministry. She worked for the White Packing Co. for 18 years.
She is survived by her son, Leroy V. Bumbrey of King George; her parents, Deacon George and Minister Annie L. Parker of King George; three brothers, the Rev. James E. Parker and Gregory F. Parker, both of King George, and George G. Parker of Chesapeake; and one sister, Rachel D. Parker of New York.
A funeral was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Good Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Williams Jr. officiating. Remains was viewed one hour prior to the service time at the church.
Remains was also viewed on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal. The family received friends on Tuesday at the church.

Lloyd B. Babylon 96 years
Lloyd B. Babylon, 96, of Colonial Beach, formerly of Arlington, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Mary Washington Health Center in Colonial Beach.
Born in Cando, N.D., Mr. Babylon served with the Seabees in the Navy during World War II. He had retired as a bus driver for D.C. Transit and then worked as a chauffeur for the Bureau of Budget. He was a member of Walker Chapel United Methodist Church in Arlington.
The widower of Marjorie H. Babylon, he is survived by a niece, Edyth Vechery of Colonial Beach; two great-nieces, Jennifer N. Washburn and Jacqueline A. Vechery, both of Colonial Beach; and a great-nephew, Lt. Col. James C. Vechery of Alabama.
A visitation was held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. A visitation was also be held on Thursday, Jan. 8, at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, where a funeral was held on Friday. Burial was in National Memorial Park, Falls Church.

Winifred Schlosser Ptucha 79 years
Winifred Schlosser Ptucha, 79, of Montross passed away at her home Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004. She was the widow of Nicholas Paul "Nick" Ptucha and was a member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church. She was active in 4-H Clubs, was a master gardener and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Montross and the Westmoreland Garden Club.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Robert "Bob" and Angie and James and Patty; four grandchildren, Jami Anastasi, Alexandra "Meagan," Jessica May and Thomas "Ryan"; a brother, Edward Schlosser of Spiritwood, N.D.; and three sisters, Arlene Wolsky of Corvalis, Mont., Coe Flemmer of Nebraska and Carole Weinrich of Brookings, S.D.
Per her request for cremation, a memorial Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Tappahannock.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Timothy's Memorial Garden Fund, Box 129, Tappahannock, Va. 22443.

Dorothy Virginia Ashton-Penn 79 years
Dorothy Virginia Ashton-Penn of Philadelphia died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at her residence. Born Oct. 4, 1924, in King George County to the late Mary P. Ashton and William F. Ashton, she was a homemaker all her life. She made her home in Philadelphia at a young age.
Mrs. Penn is survived by her husband of 57 years, Otis C. Penn Sr.; two sons, Otis C. Penn and his wife, Joyce, of Lady Smith and Jerome C. Penn of Philadelphia; two daughters, Cecilia Smalls and her husband, Bernard, of Fort Washington, Md., and Valerie White and her husband, Ray, of Cherry Hill, N.J.; four brothers, Thomas Ashton and his wife, Ophelia, of Landover, Md., Ralph Ashton and his wife, Helen, of Upper Marlboro, Md., Earl Ashton and his wife, Barbara, of Washington and Vernell Ashton of King George; four sisters, Margaret Toliver and her husband, the Rev. Edward Toliver, Ruth Lewis and her husband, James, of King George, Mildred Ashton of King George, and A. Shirley Garland of Largo, Md.; a sister-in-law, Virginia Ashton of King George; two grandsons, Marlan and Derrick; and one granddaughter, Lauren. She was preceded in death by a son, Marvin, and a brother, Robert Ashton.
Additional survivors include numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a host of friends in Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
A funeral was held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the Non-Sectarian Church of God, 51st and Haverford Avenues, Philadelphia.
Interment was in Fernwood Cemetery.
Terry Funeral Home, Philadelphia, handled arrangements.
