Lillie L. "Lou" Doan 85 years
Lillie L. "Lou" Doan, 85, of Colonial Beach died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Concord, N.C., Mrs. Doan was a graduate of Cannon High School and Blanton Business College in Asheville, N.C. She worked in several departments of the federal government for many years.
Survivors include a niece, Eunice Strassner of Rileyville; a nephew, Dale Gamble of Candler, N.C.; four great-nephews, Patt, Mitch, Paul and Preston Strassner; two great-great-nieces; and five great-great-nephews.
The family received friends on Sunday, June 20, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. A funeral and burial was held in North Carolina.
Memorial donations may be made to Wendy's Feline Friends, 1228 Holly Vista Drive, Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.

Rita L. Brooks-Cowan 86 years
Rita L. Brooks-Cowan, 86, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, formerly of Colonial Beach, died Monday at her home. A funeral was held on Thursday, June 17, at Cedar Hill Funeral Home, Suitland, Md. David Bogner Family Funeral Home, Ohio, was in charge.

Frances Mae Collins 76 years
Frances Mae Collins, 76, of West Virginia, went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 3, 2004. She was born June 8, 1927, and had resided at Heritage Hall Health Care in King George. She was the widow of Sgt. 1st Class Franklin Alfred Collins, who had served our country in World War II.
She is survived by 5 daughters, Shawn Elaine Land of Ladysmith, Karen Kite and Christine Lester, both of West Virginia, "Bitsy" Jackson of Maryland and Helen Grupp of West Virginia; a son, Frank Collins Jr. of Washington state; a daughter-in-law, Myrtle Cash; a brother, Jimmy Drenning; and three sisters, Judy Goldstein, Maveadelle Gardner and Patty Cegellis. She was blessed to be the grandmother and great-grandmother to numerous children. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Law; and two sisters, Margaret Adams and Edith McGuffin.
Mrs. Collins' last wishes were to be cremated with no service, and her ashes to be joined with her husband's on the bridge where they first kissed.

William Owen Barker 84 years
William Owen Barker, 84, of Colonial Beach died on Sunday, June 13, 2004. Mr. Barker had retired from C&P Telephone Co. as a repairman. He was a member of Ephesus Christian Church, VFW Lodge 9619 in Clinton, Md., Montross Moose Lodge 2333 in Montross, Masonic Lodge Hiram Tokoma 10, in Washington, D.C., and the American Legion Post in Colonial Beach.
He is survived by his wife, Ina May Barker; two sons, Michael B. Barker of Colonial Beach and Stephen Joseph Barker of Georgetown, Fla.; three brothers, Kenneth Barker of Clearwater, Fla., and Bobby Barker and Wayne Barker, both of Montross; a sister, Mildred Grigsby of Rollins Fork; and a cousin, Keith Barker of Colonial Beach.
A funeral was held on Wednesday, June 16, at Welch Funeral Home, Montross. Interment was in Popes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Baynesville. The family received friends Tuesday, June 15, with a Masonic and Moose service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison Street, Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.

Ruby T. Smith 93 years
Ruby T. Smith, 93, of Colonial Beach died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Washington & Lee Home for the Elderly.
Survivors include a sister, Lorraine Philpot of Colonial Beach; and a sister-in-law, Florence Smith of Jamaica, N.Y.
A funeral was held on Saturday, June 5, at Little Zion Baptist Church, Oak Grove, with Pastor William B. Scott officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The family received friends at the church. Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, Nomini Grove, is handling the arrangements.

Maurice Joshua Simms, Jr. 60 years
Maurice Joshua Simms Jr., 60, of King George County, formerly of Rock Point, Md., died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Simms was a waterman and had worked in the construction business in the Washington, D.C., area. He was an Army and Navy veteran, a member of the American Legion in La Plata, Md., and enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his father, Maurice J. Simms; his mother, Mae Stine-Simms; and a son, Donnie Wayne Atkins.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Elaine Simms; a son, Kevin Maurice Atkins; two grandsons; a brother, James F. Simms; a sister, Joan E. Cooksey; four nieces; one nephew; and a host of friends.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 5, at Holy Ghost Church in Issue, Md. The family will receive friends one hour before the service time.
Raymond Funeral Home, La Plata, Md., is handling the arrangements.

Blanche F. Shook 88 years
Blanche F. Shook, 88, of Colonial Beach died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Mary Washington Health Center, Colonial Beach. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, King George.
Mrs. Shook was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford E. Shook, and a daughter, Patricia Tipton. She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Allison and Betty Jean Litz, both of Colonial Beach; a son, Jack R. Shook, of Hendersonville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held on Thursday, June 3, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with the Rev. Willard Bowen officiating. Interment was in Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, Bladdensburg, Md. The family received friends from on Wednesday, June 2, at the funeral home.

Oliver Minor Rawlette 79 years
Oliver Minor Rawlette, 79, of Tappahannock, formerly of Colonial Beach, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004. He was a World War II Merchant Marine veteran, a retired carpenter and a member of Colonial Beach United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mildred B. Rawlette; and his brother, Lovel M. Rawlette.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gwen Rawlette Thomas and Jim Thomas; three grandchildren, Ronnie J. Thomas, Lisa M. Thomas and Leslie Hope Thomas, all of Tappahannock.
A funeral was held on Saturday, June 5, at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Interment was in Howertons Baptist Church Cemetery, Dunnsville. The family received fiends on Friday, June 4, at the funeral home.

John S. Morris 81 years
John S. Morris, 81, of Colonial Beach died at his residence Sunday, June 6, 2004. He was the husband of Annie Belle Morris.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, at Little Zion Baptist Church, Oak Grove. Burial will follow in Historyland Memorial Park, King George. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at the church.
Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, Nomini Grove, is handling the arrangements.

David Ray Halverson 56 years
David Ray Halverson, 56, of Colonial Beach died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at his home.
Born in Freemont, Mich., Mr. Halverson was employed at ASPLUNDH Tree Expert Co. for the last 12 years. He was a member of the Fredericksburg Order of Eagles, was a U.S. Army veteran, having served two tours in Vietnam, and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He had made his home with the Fitzgerald family for the last 20 years.
Survivors include two brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 5, at the Fitzgerald residence, 835 Kellogg Mill Road, in Stafford County.
Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, is handling the arrangements.

Lola Butler Dove 78 years
Lola Butler Dove, 78, of Montross died Thursday, June 3, 2004. Mrs. Dove was the widow of Richard Hayden Dove and was a member of Popes Creek Baptist Church. She was a former volunteer with the Northern Neck Hospice Support Services and a member of the Telephone Pioneers Association.
Survivors are her two sons, Richard H. Dove Jr. and his wife, Fay, and James A. Dove and his wife, Sheila, all of Montross; two sisters, Virginia E. Nash of Montross and Ann B. Flemer of Colonial Beach; five grandchildren, Alex Dove, David Petrillo, Greg Dove, Michael Cote and Stephanie Dove; and one great-grandson, Hayden Dove. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Jean Brewer; and four brothers, Richard Thomas Butler, Warren S. Butler, Clyde M. Butler and Buford L. Butler.
A funeral was held on Sunday, June 6, at Popes Creek Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery.
The family received friends at Welch's Funeral Home, Montross, on Saturday, June 5.
Memorial contributions may be made to Popes Creek Baptist Cemetery Fund, Box 592, Montross, Va. 22520; or to Montross Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 1174, Montross, Va. 22520.

Aubrey W. Owens Jr. 61 years
Aubrey W. Owens Jr., 61, of Fredericksburg died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Cherry Hill, N.J.
Born in Fredericksburg, he worked as a general laborer.
Mr. Owens was the brother of Doris M. Smith of Colonial Beach. In additional to his sister of Colonial Beach, he is survived by two other sisters; Mary F. Myers and Barbara J. Minor, both of Fredericksburg;
Survivors include a son, Absalom Owens of Texas; a daughter, Colea Owens of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, James E. Owens of Silver Spring, Md., Charles Saunders of South Carolina and Francis Howell of Norfolk; one sister-in-law; one brother-in-law; and one aunt, Elizabeth Lumpkin of Hustle.
A funeral was held on Friday, May 28, at A.L. Bennett Funeral Home, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Charles Wormley giving the eulogy. The body was cremated.
Viewing was on Thursday, May 27, at the funeral home.

Marguerite V. Klotz 93 years
Marguerite V. Klotz, 93, of Colonial Beach died peacefully Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in the presence of her family, after a short illness.
Mrs. Klotz is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Walter F. Klotz Sr.; her daughter, Marguerite V. Staples of Colonial Beach; her son, Walter F. Klotz Jr. of King George County; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Klotz was born in Upper Marlboro, Md., July 26, 1910, and graduated from Eastern High School and the Horton School of Business in Washington, D.C. She moved to Colonial Beach with her husband in 1945. Together, they owned and operated several businesses, including Playland Novelty on the boardwalk and the Gem 5&10 store.
Mrs. Klotz was an active member of the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary since 1947, the Colonial Beach Lioness Club and the Friendship Club. She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church since 1945, where she was the Sunday School treasurer for over 50 years.
The family received friends on Sunday, May 30, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. Mrs. Kotz's funeral was held on Monday, May 31, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Ron Okrasinski and the Rev. Johnny Almond officiating. Interment was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, Box 212, Colonial Beach, Va. 22443; or to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Box 420, Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.
