Belle A. Powell 84 years
Belle A. Powell, 84, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Monrovia Farm.
Born in Westmoreland County, Mrs. Powell was a homemaker and widow of Harry L. Powell. She was a member of The Friendship Club of Colonial Beach, was an active member and former president of the Home Extension Club in Westmoreland and was an avid needleworker and reader.
She was the mother of Joseph B. Powell and his wife, Ginny, of King George.
Survivors include her children, Margaret A. Koontz and her husband, Robert, of Dale City, H. Shirley Powell and his wife, Joan, of Colonial Beach, Betty J. Penn and her husband, John, of Plantation, Fla., and Joseph B. Powell and his wife, Ginny, of King George; 10 grandchildren, Dr. Stephen R. Koontz of Fort Collins, Colo., Kenneth H. Koontz of Arlington, Cathy P. Cavender of Surf City, N.C., Rebecca P. Petersen of Stamford, Conn., Amanda Powell of Richmond, Holly A. Penn and Miles C. Penn, both of Plantation, Fla., Heidi Compton of Orlando, Fla., Jason H. Powell of New Kent and Wendy S. Powell of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Katie Dickinson and Mildred Grigsby, both of Colonial Beach; and three brothers, John Martin of Colonial Beach, Teddy Martin of Florida and Albert Martin of Pennsylvania.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. Burial will follow in the Powell family cemetery on Monrovia Farm.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave., Suite 210, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.

Kendall Wayne Berry 68 years
Kendall Wayne Berry, 68, of Montross died Tuesday, May 11, 2004.
Mr. Berry was a Westmoreland State Park ranger and was the husband of Evelyn Younkin Berry. Other survivors are four sons, Kenneth W. Berry, Douglas L. Berry and Dale L. Berry, all of Montross, and Michael S. Berry of Colonial Beach; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Friday, May 14, at Welch Funeral Home, Montross. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. c/o Mrs. Gwen Odell, Box 453, Montross, Va. 22520.

David Lee Woods 73 years
David Lee Woods, 73, of Fairview Beach died Friday, May 7, 2004, at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond. Arrangements are incomplete at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

Charles Edwards Thomas 84 years
Charles Edwards Thomas, 84, of Montross died on Friday, April 30, 2004.
Thomas was a retired self-employed merchant, and he was a member and a deacon of Popes Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ester Nash Thomas; two nephews, Junior Morris of King George and Charles Lane "Brick" Thomas of Colonial Beach; a niece, Margaret Ann Griffith of Fredericksburg; two great-nieces, Lisa Todd MacNevin of Richmond and Anne Truxtun Pride of Raleigh, N.C.; a great-nephew, Benjamin Verbin Madison III of Norfolk; and other great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services was held on Monday, May 3, at Popes Creek Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. The family received friends at Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel on Sunday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to Popes Creek Baptist Church, Box 592, Montross, Va. 22520.

Mary Jett Schools 58 years
Mary Jett Schools, age 58, of Emmerton, widow of Russell Morris Schools, died Thursday, April 29, 2004.
Mrs. Schools is survived by two sons, Russell M. "Rusty" Schools of Warsaw and Joseph "Joey" Schools and his wife, Danielle, of Tappahannock; a daughter, Debbie Schools of Austin, Texas; three brothers, John T. Jett Jr., Paul D. Jett and Earl S. Jett, all of Fredericksburg; and three sisters, Margaret J. Morgan and Palma J. Blom, both of Stafford, and Anna J. Johnson of Suffolk.
A funeral was held on Sunday, May 2, at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Emmerton, with burial in the church cemetery.
The family received friends at Welch Funeral Home, Marks Chapel, 10300 Richmond Road, Warsaw on Saturday, May 1.
Memorial contributions may be made to Richmond County Rescue Squad, Box 55, Warsaw, Va. 22572.

Paul "Houston" Muterspaw Jr. 63 years
Paul "Houston" Muterspaw Jr., 63, of Colonial Beach died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Muterspaw was a truck mechanic for Virginia Paving.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce M. Muterspaw; children, Yvonne Sudduth and her husband, Ronald, of Colonial Beach, Christy Jones and her husband, Chris, of Millers Tavern, Lauri Bruton and her husband, Bill, of Marietta, Ga.; Charles Felton and his wife, Cheryl, of Colonial Beach; his children, Cheryl, Paul III, Karen and Barbara; a sister, Janet Stewart of Indiana; 24 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family received friends on Friday, May 7, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.

Earl Franklin Musselman 70 years
Earl Franklin Musselman, 70, of Stafford County died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at his residence. He was a loving father and grandfather. He was the owner of Professional Lock and Key Service, which he began in 1969 out of the back of a station wagon. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and the Sons of the Confederacy, and was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was the father of Janelle Schopfel of King George. In addition to his daughter of King George, he is survived by two sons, Jay Musselman and Jerry Musselman, both of Stafford; and one more daughter, Jenifer Musselman of Strasburg; one brother, Homer Musselman of Stafford; and three grandchildren, Jeremy Musselman and Rhiannon Musselman, both of Stafford, and Ava Schopfel of King George.
A funeral was held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Fairview Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert W. Sizemore officiating. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Md.
The family received friends Monday, May 10, 2004, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

Paul Alfred Leach 65 years
Paul Alfred Leach, 65, of Colonial Beach died Friday, April 30, 2004. Mr. Leach was a member of Rappahannock Christian Church and Colonial Beach Moose Lodge 1636.
He is survived by his wife, Robin G. Leach; two daughters, Donna Lynn Meushaw of Alexandria and Jodie Lynn Webb of Mullins, S.C.; a sister, Patricia McKee of Mount Jackson; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 8 at Rappahannock Church of Christ, 9514 Richmond Road, Warsaw. The family received friends at the church. A memory of pictures was accepted.

Marian Rita Zell unknown
Marian Rita Zell of LaPlata, MD, and formerly of Colonial Beach, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Civista Hospital in LaPlata.
Marion loved her family, cooking, sewing, playing cards & bingo. She is preceded in death by her husband, Enoch "Joe" Zell, a son, Danny, a daughter, Carolyn and a great grandson, Destin Heiston. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Harris and Eleanor Collins and four children, Judy and her husband, Gene Heiston of LaPlata. Mary and her husband Bill Davis of Upper Marlboro, Bob and her wife Brenda Zell of Montross, Va. and Jim and his wife Sandy Zell of West Virginia. She is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Friday, May 7th at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. & 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home at 211 St. Mary's Avenue in LaPlata. A mass service will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 8th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Roger E. Hammer 81 years
Roger E. Hammer, 81, of Dahlgren, formerly of Lacy Springs, died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Heritage Hall Health Care in King George.
Born at Weyers Cave, Mr. Hammer had retired as a television repairman. He was the widower of Sarah C. Hammer.
Survivors include two sons, William "Bill" Hammer of Dahlgren and James "Jim" Hammer of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; a sister, Clara Hammer Payne of Harrisonburg; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, David Hammer.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. Ted James officiating. Burial will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Mary Hinson Dean 92 years
Mary Hinson Dean, 92, of Beales Wharf went home to be with her Lord Sunday, May 2, 2004. One of seven children, she was born at Pleasant Retreat at Templemen's Crossroads on March 9, 1912.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Ridgely Dean; her parents, George Hinson and Mary Marks Hinson; her brothers, Milton, Phil, Elton and Gus Hinson; a sister Dora Garner Harper; and a grandson, George Milton Dean Jr.
Mary is survived by her children, George Milton Dean of Beales Wharf, Myrtle Lee Dean France and her husband, William, of Montross, and Nancy Dean Wolff and her husband, Noel, of Marysville, Wash; her grandchildren, Catharine Dean of Richmond, Garrett Dean of Charlotte, N.C., James Dean of Richmond, Rebecca France of Richmond, Mary Scott France Coffey and her husband, David, of King George, and Michelle Wolff Thurston and her husband, Robert, of Everett, Wash; her great-grandchildren, Kelly Dean of Richmond and Benjamin and Erin Coffey of King George County; a sister, Lillian Hinson Newton of Bushfield Road; a sister-in-law, Helen Anthony Hinson of Kinsale; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service to celebrate Mary's life was held on Tuesday, May 4, at Nomini Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Nomini Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o William Howeth, 2789 Cople Highway, Montross, Va. 22520, or to the Westmoreland County Rescue Squad, Box 37, Mount Holly, Va. 22525.
Welch Funeral Home, Montross, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy L. Blankenbaker 71 years
Dorothy L. Blankenbaker, 71, of Spotsylvania County, died Sunday, May 2, 2004.
Born in King George County, she had retired as a certified nursing assistant from Hughes Home. She was the owner of Rick's Cafe in Fredericksburg from 1969 to 1984.
Mrs. Blankenbaker attended New Life International Outreach Ministries, was a member of Certified Nurses Assistant Association, a former charter member of the Fredericksburg Moose Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and former member of Montague Baptist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Gusty and Sadie Dillon and the widow of Thomas J. Blankenbaker, Sr.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Beyer Mercado and her husband, Vito, of Spotsylvania; five sons, James E. Beyer Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of Richmond; H. Davies Beyer, Steve R. Blankenbaker and his companion, Debbie Underwood; Rickey E. Blankenbaker and his wife, Lori; and T.J. Blankenbaker Jr. and his wife, Kathy, all of Spotsylvania; two stepdaughters, Marie Catlett and Lucy Pritchett, both of Spotsylvania; three stepsons, Bo and Roy Blankenbaker, both of Spotsylvania and Jerry Blankenbaker of Florida; a sister, Shirley Carneal; and a brother, William Dillon, both of Spotsylvania; 15 grandchildren, Timmy, Shane and Shannon Margrave, Jason, Emily, Dorothy Jean and Mercy Lynn Beyer, Rickey and Katie Blankenbaker, Jessica Brown, Kayla and Brittany Blankenbaker, James Phillips, Tanya Smith and Patsy Michael; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Beyer Phillips of Lynchburg.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Shaun Matako officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends on Tuesday, May 4, at the funeral home.
