Estelle Sisson Omohundro Osborne 88 years
Estelle Sisson Omohundro Osborne, 88, of Montross, died Saturday, April 3, 2004. Mrs. Osborne was actually named Willie Estelle Sisson at birth but always went by Estelle throughout her lifetime. Born October 9, 1915 to Emma Belfield and George Roland Sisson, Sr., she was the second oldest in a family of eight children. As a young girl growing up, she loved working outdoors better than helping in the house, especially riding her father's work horses.
She married Alvin Wyatt Omohundro, Sr., and raised two children, Lucille and Wyatt. In 1955, she married C. A. "Jimmy" Osborne and soon after they started the Dairy Freeze in Montross. Most of her brothers and sisters left home for work in the Washington D. C. area. Estelle was never interested in leaving Westmoreland County. In fact, when Jimmy built a new house up on Chandler's Mill Hill, he wasn't positively sure until the last minute that she would actually leave "Templemans" and move that far away. But she did.
Estelle will be remembered for many of her beautiful crocheted afghans as well as needlepoint pictures. Most of us in the family are blessed with one of these beautiful creations in our homes.
She will also be known for opening her home to the new State Troopers who came to the area and needed a place to stay. Buddy Jackson, Allen Seager, Tommy Gladson and Mike Sweet just to name a few, all were part of her extended family. Estelle was well liked and loved by all. She was a loving and caring daughter to her mother and father in their last years and opened her home for many years to them and cared for them. Estelle was a lifetime member of Nomini Baptist Church and volunteered her services to help many people in the community including volunteering many hours and days at Tappahannock Manor. She will be truly missed by many.
Survivors include her two children, Alvin Wyatt Omohundro of Mechanicsville and Lucille O. Johnson of California; four grandchildren, Ann Johnson Murray, Karen Johnson Caporalli, Clyde Edward Johnson, Jr., and Lisa Omohundro Greeves; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a sister, Louise Sisson Stinson of North Carolina; a stepson, Robert Osborne of Richmond and sister-in-law, Gwen Sisson of Montross. Mrs. Osborne was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Thompson and Laura Settle and four brothers, George Roland Sisson, Jr., Benjamin Sisson, William "Duck" Sisson and Robert Jack Sisson.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6 at Nomini Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Reverend William L. Burruss officiated. Pallbearers were George Sisson, Johnnie Sisson, Roddie Sisson, Ronnie Stinson, Allen Seager, Stanley Schoppe, Robbie Whitman, and Buddy Jackson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Montross Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 1174, Montross, Va. 22520.
