DENTON, N.C. -- Mary Lou Wimmer, 76, of 5111 Branchview Way, formerly of Pea Patch, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the home of a daughter in Denton. She was born in Pan, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Lilly Bell Keene Goodman, both Buchanan County, Va., natives. She lived in the Jewell Ridge and Pea Patch areas her entire life and was a member of Shelter Freewill Baptist Church at Whitewood, Va. She was the widow of Rufus Wimmer. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Columbus (Bonnie) Baker Jr. of Denton; three sons, Curtis Wimmer of Oak Creek, Wis., Kenneth Wimmer of Jewell Ridge, Va., and Darrell Wimmer of Oak Creek, Wis.; four sisters, Mrs. Joe (Corby) Wimmer of Abingdon, Pearlie Sutherland of Talmadge, Ohio, Pinkie White of Richlands and Mrs. Burb (Thelma) Vance of Swords Creek, Va.; three brothers, George Goodman Jr. of Talmadge, Ronald Goodman of Abingdon and Harold Goodman of Pounding Mill, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands. The Revs. Jimmy Cole, Earl Cole and Columbus Baker Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Pea Patch. Mrs. Wimmer was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Charlene Wimmer; and two brothers, Peerless and James Goodman. Pallbearers will be relatives and friends. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday in Hurst-Scott Funeral Home.

Eva Hester Vandyke Cox
RICHLANDS -- Eva Hester Vandyke Cox, 75, of 121 Franklin Ave., died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at her home. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Harve Vandyke and Macie Nipper Vandyke Lowe, both Buchanan County, Va., natives. She was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area, a retired employee of Mattie Williams Hospital and a member of Old Premier Full Gospel Temple at Red Ash, Va. She was the widow of Lee Cox. Surviving are a son, Delmer Cox of Doran, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Roy (Virginia) Hess or Richlands, Lottie Shelton of Doran and Mrs. Jack (Irene) Patrick of Paintlick, Va.; a brother, Raymond Vandyke of Raven, Va.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands. The Revs. Carl Ball and Leonard Meadows will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Among survivors are a special friend, Anis Whitt; a special caregiver, Greta Reynolds; grandchildren Kathy Cox and Mrs. Thaddeus (Vickie) McCoy; and a great-grandchild, Tamara McCoy. Pallbearers will be Daniel Baldwin, Paul Vance, Thaddeus McCoy, Wayne Ward, Bobby Johnson and Bobby Ball. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Harris, Dr. E.E. Moore, everyone at Community Home Care and Hospice of Norton. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday in Hurst-Scott Funeral Home.

Elder Wallace R. Cooper
PILGRIM KNOB, Va. -- Elder Wallace R. Cooper, 96, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in a Grundy hospital. He was born in McDowell County, W.Va., a son of the late Dave and Luvene Rife Cooper, both Buchanan County natives. He was a retired miner and farmer and served as an elder in Primitive Baptist Church for 71 years. He lived in the Buchanan County area most of his life and was a member of Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church at Pea Patch, Va. He was a member of UMWA Local Union 7327 of Jewell Valley, Va. He was the widower of Elzena Wimmer Cooper, Rachel Boyd Cooper and Rosie Horn Cooper. Surviving are five daughters, Kizzie Wimmer of Bluefield, Va., Ola Gay Nelson of Quaker City, Ohio, Girtrue Addair and Lovatta Lester, both of Pilgrim Knob, and June Matney of Fredericksburg, Va.; three sons, Sammy Cooper of Brunswick, Ohio, and Charlie Cooper and Gilbert Cooper, both of Jewell Ridge, Va.; four step-daughters, Dorothy Horn of Jolo, W.Va., Eunice Smith, Gertrude Bobinson and Donna Lambert, all of Clermont, Ga.; two stepsons, Tommy Roberts and Roger Roberts, both of Clermont; 31 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several great-grandchidren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church at Pea Patch by Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Richlands. Elders Eunice Davis and Junior Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Wimmer Cemetery at Pea Patch. Mr. Cooper was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rosie Cooper; five sons, Clarence, Clyde, Kermit, Eugene and Newton Cooper; a stepson, Luther Roberts Jr.; a grandson, Terry Vencil; three sisters, Louise Rife, Lucy Lester and Ida Lowe; and five brothers, Walter, Charlie, Booker, John and Arthur Cooper. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home, where a service will be held at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Lawrence Horn and Singers. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Glen Nickles
ABINGDON -- Glen Nickles, 78, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at his home. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late William Bowen and Ida Nickles. He lived most of his life in Dayton, Ohio, before moving to Abingdon in 1988. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division. While in Dayton, he volunteered as a cook for several nursing homes and hospitals. Surviving are his wife, Faye Sesco Nickles; a brother, Thomas Harold Nickles of North Tazewell, Va.; four sisters, Bessie Sammons of South Williamson, Ky., Ruby Hagy and Ruth Pridemore, both of Abingdon, and Wanda Wright of Huntington, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Mr. Nickles was also preceded in death by two brothers, Claude Nickles and Elmer Nickles. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Wilburn, Dr. Steven Hanor, Dr. Sarfraz Zaidi, Gene McCluskey and Dan Hendrickson. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Farris Funeral Service.

Larkin A. Clevinger
GRUNDY -- Larkin A. Clevinger, 72, of the Home Creek section of Route 1, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a son of the late Elder John W. and Mandy Keen Clevinger. He was a member and deacon of Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 382nd military Police Battalion in Germany. He was the recipient of the Army Occupational Medal and World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Sandy Vally Lodge 17 AF&AM, I00F Lodge 17 of Grundy and of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Co. and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Mable McClanahan Clevinger; two daughters, Mrs. Jesse (Carolyn) Cammer of Gastonia, N.C., and Mrs. Jerry (Peggy) Thompson of Florence, S.C.; two sons, Wesley Clevinger of Grundy and David Clevinger of Vienna, Va.; six sisters, Alice Coleman of Abingdon, Lou Owens and Jean St. Clair, both of Grundy, Rachel Cochran of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Stella Dales of Franklin, Ohio, and Polly Bateman of Shuqualak, Miss.; a brother, Gilbert Clevinger of Haysi; and four grandsons. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church, Route 1, Grundy, by Grundy Funeral Home. Elders Jerry Newsome, Frank O'Quinn, Jackie Yates, Mack Varney, Harold Smallwood, Roby Raines and Howard Daniels will officiate. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va., with full military rites by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Mr. Clevinger was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Fred and Jimmy Clevinger. Among survivors are a daughter-in-law, Christina Clevinger of Vienna; and grandsons, Chris Abney, Rick Thompson, Ryan Clevinger and Chad Clevinger. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Rolando M. Chavez, Dr. M.J. Thakkar, Howard L. Daniels, Billy Deel and Bill Elswick. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel, where Masonic rites will be held at 7 p.m. by members of Sandy Valley Lodge l7. Regular services will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl Armes Clark
ABINGDON -- Pearl Armes Clark, 74, formerly of Mavisdale in Buchanan County, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Drill, Va., a daughter of the late Rufus and Louisa Baldwin Armes. She was the widow of Carless Clark and resided in Mavisdale for 36 years before moving to Abingdon in 1978. She was of the Baptist faith, a homemaker and attended Spoon Gap Freewill Baptist Church in Abingdon. Surviving are a son, the Rev. James Clark of Richlands; a daughter, Judith Taylor of Abingdon; two sisters, Bea Shell of Orwell, Ohio, and Faye Whitt of Mavisdale; three grandsons; and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Herbert Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Mrs. Clark was also preceded in death by two brothers, James Perry Armes and Edward Armes; and a sister, Ida Mae Smith. Among survivors are a daughter-in-law, Mildred Clark of Richlands; a son-in-law, Haril Taylor of Abingdon; grandsons Eddie Clark of Richlands, Joel Clark of Lebanon and Jody Taylor of Abingdon; and great-grandson Cody Taylor of Abingdon. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Spoon Gap Freewill Baptist Church, c//o Ruth Bailey, 19181 Spoon Gap Road, Abingdon, VA 24211-6707. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday in Farris Funeral Service.

Fayrene Helton Reynolds Yates
ROWE, Va. -- Fayrene Helton Reynolds Yates, 46, of Stinson Ridge section of Star Route, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a daughter of the late Noah and Carrie Bailey Helton. She was a member of Helton's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church on Stinson Ridge and the widow of Woodrow Reynolds. Surviving are her husband, the Rev. Clarence Yates; two sons, Greg Reynolds of Rowe, Va., and Jason Reynolds of the home; two stepdaughters, Rita Reynolds of Raven, Va., and Joyce Yates of Marion; three sisters, Lorene Lester of Oakwood, Va., Gerlene McGlothlin of Rowe and Eva Mae Hale of Drill, Va.; three brothers, Carlos Helton and Buford Helton, both of Rowe, and F.P. Helton of Honaker; a grandson; and a step-granddaughter. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Roy Lee Wilson, Gilbert Roten and Eugene Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Reynolds Cemetery of Kent's Ridge. Mrs. Yates was also preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Helton. Among survivors are a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Reynolds of Rowe; a grandson, Clayton Reynolds; and a step-granddaughter, Kayla Reynolds. Pallbearers will be relatives and friends. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home, where a service will be held at 7 p.m. Honaker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lee Crouse
HONAKER -- Lee Crouse, 77, of the Gardner community, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Walter and Madie Musick Crouse. He lived in the Drill area, near Honaker, for many years and moved to the Gardner community in 1974. He and his wife operated Crouse's Grocery in Drill for several years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the infantry on the Phillipine Islands. He was a retired coal miner, formerly employed with Island Creek Coal Co. at VP 1 and a member of UMWA Local 1589 in Oakwood. He was the widower of Maude Martin Crouse. Surviving are a son, Roger Crouse of Honaker; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Jean) Griffith of Blacklick, Ohio, and Fay Perkins of Mount Vernon, Ohio; a brother, Curtis Crouse of Mount Vernon; and two granddaughters. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. Mr. Crouse was also preceded in death by a brother, Claude Crouse; and three sisters, Jeanette Clutter, Ethel Murphy and Kathleen Hamilton. Among survivors are granddaughters Kimberly Crouse and Karen Crouse. Pallbearers will be relatives and friends. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday in Honaker Funeral Home.

E.M. "Bud" Coleman
ABINGDON -- E.M. "Bud" Coleman, 80, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, in Wellmont Hospice in Bristol, Tenn. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late Hugh and Florence Arms Coleman. He lived in Buchanan County before moving to Abingdon in 1991. He was a member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of John Gentry VFW Post 7360 in Grundy and John Ratliff American Legion Post 164 in Grundy. He was a member of Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge 0017, the IOOF in Grundy and the UMWA District 28. He retired from Harman Mining Corp. in Grundy and was a member of Buchanan County Board of Supervisors for 10 years and the Buchanan County Electoral Board for nine years. He was the widower of Alice H. Coleman. Surviving are two daughters, Sue Edwards of Pembroke, Va., and Judith Fuller of Abingdon; a sister, Lorene Lester of Casstown, Ohio; four grandchildren, Vicky Lumpp of Roanoke, Joseph Edwards of Richmond, David Edwards of Charlottesville, Va., and Steven Fuller of Abingdon; and six great-grandchildren, Shane Lumpp, Chauncey Lumpp, Gabe Lumpp, Creed Lumpp, Jacob Edwards and Kaci Fuller. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. Pastor Chris Alford and the Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va., with military honors by John Ratliff American Legion Post 164, Grundy. Mr. Coleman was also preceded in death by a sister, Ona Johnson; and three brothers, Elmer Coleman, Thurman Coleman and Virgil Coleman. Among survivors are two sons-in-law, Victor Edwards of Pembroke and Garnett Fuller of Abingdon; and caregivers, Susie Keaton, Sandra Thayer and Louise Meade. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Glenn Stroud, Mike Pridemore, friends and deacons of Pilgrim Baptist Church and the Buchanan County Mens Club. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home, where a song service will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Pilgrim Baptist Church, 16438 Pilgrim lane, Abingdon, VA 24211. Edna McClanahan Elswick
GRUNDY -- Edna McClanahan Elswick, 87, of the Home Creek section of Route 1, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a daughter of the late James Milton and Caroline Looney McClanahan. She was a member of Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church, a homemaker and the widow of John Elswick. Surviving are three daughters, Nellene E. Clevinger Hutchinson, Mary Louise E. Case and Rebecca Lynn E. Hutchinson, all of Grundy; two sons, Otis Daniel Elswick and Billy Gene Elswick, both of Grundy; three granddaughters; seven grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church on Home Creek, Route 1, Grundy, by Grundy Funeral Home. Elders Frank Oquinn, Jerry Newsome, Jackie Yates, Mack Varney, Freddy Ramey, Willis Conrad and Roby Raines will officiate. The body will be taken to the church Monday at 11 a.m. to await the funeral hour at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. Mrs. Elswick, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, was also preceded in death by six sisters, Gracie Fields, Lucy Clevinger, Ethel Dotson, May Justus, Lillie Stiltner and Orie Fletcher; and five brothers, Roscoe, Hufford, George, Ellis and Dorsey McClanahan. Among survivors are two sons-in-law, Robert James Hutchinson and Roger Allen Hutchinson, both of Grundy; two daughters-in-law, Clara Elswick and Naomi Elswick, both of Grundy; three granddaughters, Billie Jean Warton of Elm City, N.C., Valerie Massengill of Bristol Virginia and Jennifer Hutchinson of Grundy; seven grandsons, Michael Case and John Allen Hutchinson, both of Grundy, Mark Case of Wolford, Va., James Neal Clevinger of Harman, Va., Robert John Hutchinson of Kingsport, Dwayne Elswick of Christiansburg, Va., and Victor Elswick of Alexandria, Va.; and five great-grandchildren, Christian McCrae Case, Cassidy Renee Case, Christina Marie Clevinger, Chastity Lynn Clevinger and Zachary Massengill. Pallbearers will be Michael Case, Mark Case, James Neal Clevinger, Dwayne Elswick, Robert John Hutchinson, Victor Elswick and John Allen Hutchinson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Larry G. Mitche, Dr. M.J. Thakkar, staff of the ICU Unit at Buchanan General Hospital and members of Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Saturday in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel, where services will be held Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
