GRUNDY, Va. -- Keith G. Stiltner, 66 years of age, of the Deel Section, passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Jarriet P. and Margie Looney Stiltner. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Church of Christ. He was a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1952 and attended Southwest Virginia Community College. He was a retired employee of Pittson Coal Corporation and a former employee of Grundy Funeral Home. Mr. Stiltner is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mrs. Peggy Jean Stacy Stiltner, Grundy; two daughters, Barbara Lynn Mitchell, Atlanta, Ga., and Lisa Karen Stiltner, Atlanta; two sons, Nathan D. Stiltner, Lenoir, N.C., and Keith Gordon Stiltner Jr., Atlanta; two brothers, Ronald N. Stiltner, Port Orange, Fla., and Billy R. Stiltner, Daytona Beach, Fla.; and also by nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Billy Pinson Stiltner. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Vernon Blankenship, Evangelist Mike Rife and Joe D. Slone officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. Active pallbearers will be: Timothy Clifton, Jason Keith Stiltner, Matthew Gordon Stiltner, Larry Stiltner, Terry Stiltner, Mike Stacy, Jake Stacy, Russ Jarriet Stiltner and Barney Stiltner. Honorary pallbearers will be: Jerry Shields, Johnny Stacy, Leslie Stacy, Lacy Love Jr., Lonnie Love, Ralph Cordle, Jimmy Day and Jackie McClanahan. There will be services at the funeral home chapel Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

Weltha Margaret Stiltner Young
MAXIE, Va. -- Weltha Margaret Stiltner Young, 75, of Convict Hollow section, passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital. Born in Buchanan County, Sept. 24, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Enoch Stiltner and Mary Ellen Clevinger Stiltner. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ for the past 10 years and a homemaker. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading the Bible and watching cartoons with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Otis Young; one sister, Mable Hurley; and four brothers, Edd Stiltner, Jack Stiltner, Earnest Stiltner and Ralph Stiltner. She is survived by three daughters, Marie Mullins of Maxie, Mrs. Tony (Cathy) Duty of Grundy, Va., and Mrs. Rodney (Renee) McLelland of Taylorsville, N.C.; four sons, Clarence Young of Clyde, Ohio, Steve Young of Clintwood, Va., Larry Young of Big Rock, Va., and James Mullins of Hiddneite, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Melba) Harmon of Clyde and Sue Lockhart of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and one brother, James Stiltner of Clyde. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Little Prater Church of Christ, Grundy, with Evangelist Mike Trent officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock. Active pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the elders and deacons of the Little Prater Church of Christ. The body will be left at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel where friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening with services at 7 p.m. with Pastor Danny Hess. The body will be taken to the Little Prater Church of Christ Thursday evening at 4 p.m. where evening services will be held at 7 p.m. The family of Weltha Margaret Stiltner Young is being served by Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home, Grundy, Va.

Mrs. Gladys Presley
COUNCIL, Va. -- Funeral services for Mrs. Gladys Presley will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. Entombment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Lebanon, Va. Grandsons and family will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Wellmont Hospice, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, TN 37620. Mrs. Presley, 85, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Bristol, Va. Born April 10, 1915, in Buchanan County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Elbert Perry and Martha Hale Fletcher. She was a lifelong resident of the Council area and was of the Southern Baptist faith. She was retired from Russell Manufacturing and was a member of the Council Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Floyd Presley. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Presley of Bristol, Va., and Betty Rose of Bristol, Tenn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Maxwell and Joyce L. Presley of Vansant, Va.; one sister, Maxie Ray of Abingdon, Va.; four grandchildren, Donna Robinson, Allen Rose, Randy Rose and Farrell Harris; and four great-grandchildren also survive.

Charles Stuard Hipps
HURLEY, Va. -- Charles Stuard Hipps, 77, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at his home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County on March 28, 1922, the son of the late Charlie M. Hipps and Mary Alice Cooper Hipps, he was a member of Hurley Church of God in Jesus Name. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, having received the Purple Heart Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal, the American Theater Service Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. He was a member of VFW 7360, the American Legion John Ratliff Post 164 of Grundy, Va., was the organizer of the Buchanan County Rescue Squad, where he was an emergency medical technician. He was a retired coal miner. Mr. Hipps was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Darrell Hipps, Coy Hipps, Clark Hipps and Crawford Hipps; one sister, Pearl Tester; and one half-brother, Denver Hipps. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Annie Mae Justus Hipps of Hurley; two daughters, Mrs. Lonzo (Ruth) Lester of Grundy and Mrs. Jim (June) Packard of Lakeland, Fla.; four sons, Benny Hipps and Donnie Hipps, of Frederick, Md., Teddy Hipps of Hurley, and Tommy Hipps and wife, Leslie, of Wakersville, Md. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Dr. Buford Smith, Reverend Jerry Ward and Reverend Herbert Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the American Legion John Ratliff Post 164. Active pallbearers will be Lonzo Lester Jr., Brandon Hipps, Joshua Hipps, Justin Hipps, Timothy Shortridge and Keith Skeens. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Hensley, Dr. V. Modi, Cubert Coleman, Jerry Justus, Earl Justus, Billy Justus, Bobby Belcher and Billy Christian. The body will remain at the funeral home, where friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday evening with services Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. The family of Charles Stuard Hipps is being served by Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy.

Mr. Jessie James Stiltner
MEADOWVIEW -- Mr. Jessie James Stiltner, 72, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Buchanan County and a son of the late Bill Stiltner and Liza King Stiltner. He was preceded in death by a son, Lonnie Chester Stiltner. He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Mary Stiltner; four sons, Dean Stiltner of Bristol, Va., Danny Stiltner of Bristol, Tenn., Leon Stiltner of Grundy and Jimmy Stiltner; four daughters, Edith, Susie, April and Norma Jean; two brothers, Hardin Stiltner of Dismal, Va., and Billy Stiltner of Bristol, Va.; two sisters, Hattie Patrick of Bristol, Va., and Ellen Mooney of Defiance, Ohio; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Farris Funeral Service of Abingdon is serving the family of Mr. Stiltner.

Vicey Ramey Yates
BUCHANAN COUNTY -- Vicey Ramey Yates, 95, of the Conaway section, passed away at her home Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, following a lengthy illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late G.T. "Thompson" and Louise Looney Ramey. She was a member of Sumac Grove Primitive Baptist Church and a devoted mother and housewife. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert H. Yates on Jan. 18, 1971. She is survived by three sons, Ralph Edward and wife, Edith Yates, of Big Rock, Va., Glenn Thomas and wife, Mae Yates, of Yorktown, Va., and Harry Eugene and wife, Judy Yates, of Conaway; one sister, Mrs. Ocie and husband, Don Cantrell, of Big Rock; one half-sister, Sue Justus of Big Rock; and one half-brother, Johnny Mullins of Big Rock. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Yates and Ruby Puckett; three sons, Elbert Harvey Yates Jr., Harold Yates and Kermit L. Yates; two sisters, Clementine Mullins and Ethel Hagy; and four brothers, Clell Ramey, Wilson Ramey, Bud Ramey and James Ramey. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Mike Rife officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. Saturday evening. There will be evening services at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p.m. Saturday evening. Active pallbearers: Teddy Yates, Jeffery Yates, Steve Stiltner, Randy Fletcher, Tim Birkicht, Wesley Smith, Phillip Skeens and Danny Cantrell. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

Narcie Lee Hale Skeens
GRUNDY, Va. -- Narcie Lee Hale Skeens, 66 years of age, of the Stiltner's Creek section of Route 1, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands, Va., following an extended illness. Born in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Willie E. and Zella Lewis Hale. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was a former nursing aide at Grundy Hospital for 10 years, a former employee of Buchanan County School System and a former employee of Vansant Food City. Mrs. Skeens is survived by her husband, Keister Allen Skeens of Grundy; one daughter, Teresa Brown and husband Gary, Meadowview, Va.; six sisters, Dolly Hale, Richlands, Joyce Ross and husband Ray, Bristol, Tenn., Darlis Armes and husband, Ersel, Lebanon, Va., Sue Meadows and husband, Jimmie, Claypool Hill, Va., Maxine Perry and husband, Bill, Grundy, and Polly Riley, Bristol, Va.; and one grandson, Christopher Eric Endicott, Meadowview. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Buford and L.C. Hale. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Dean Powers, Tim Charlton, Rev. Ancil Childress and Evangelist Mike Rife officiating with burial to follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Monday evening at 6 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be: Christopher Endicott, Patrick O'Conner, Donald O'Conner, Michael O'Conner, Billy Perry, Brian Perry, Bradley Armes, Keith Armes, Jimmy Meadows Jr., Johnny Ross, Terry Ross, Jason Raines, Kenneth Tran, Kevin Dye, Frank McGlothlin, Keith Stiltner, Bruce Stiltner and Tim Brown. Hazel Madilene Boyd
VANSANT, Va. -- Hazel Madilene Boyd, 62, of the Boyd Ridge section passed away Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at her home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Fanning and Ethel Jackson Boyd. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. Miss Boyd is survived by five sisters, Martha May and husband Walter, Freeburn, Ky., Myrtle Boyd, Waldo, Fla., Marie Charles and husband Glen, Vansant, Kathlene Lockhart and husband Donald, Vansant, and Dorothy Hibbitts and husband Robert, Vansant; two brothers, Jennings Boyd and wife Audrey, Bishop, Va., and Ernest Boyd and wife Betty, Freeburn; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Teddy Wayne Boyd, July 25, 1955, and David Francis Boyd, July 22, 1996. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 1, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders, Paul Varney, Elmer Brown, Price Viers, Don Stacy, Franklin Viers and Mike Smith officiating, with burial to follow in Boyd Family Cemetery on Boyd Ridge on the head of Leemaster near Vansant. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be nephews. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

Mr. Elmer Deel
ABINGDON, Va. -- Mr. Elmer Deel, 68, has gone to be with his Heavenly Father on Feb. 26, 2001. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Emory Floyd Deel and Nancy Jane Deel. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ocie Hill, formerly of Haysi, Va., and a brother, Earl Deel, formerly of Abingdon. Mr. Deel was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He was retired from the Buchanan County School System and was a member and elder of Shakesville Church of Christ in Bristol. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathleen Mayo Deel; two daughters, Debra Mitchell and husband Alvin of East Brookfield, Mass., and Kimberly Lambert and husband Lanny of Hudson, N.C.; two grandchildren, Sarah Lambert and Steven Mitchell; a sister, Rosa Ramey of Haysi, Va.; five brothers, George Deel of Haysi, Joseph Deel of Birchleaf, Va., Robert Deel of Abingdon, David Deel of Richlands and Emory Deel of Johnson City, Tenn. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Mr. Steve Bufkin of Wilkes Christian Church, Michael F. McCoy, evangelist, of Macedonia Church of Christ, Mr. Wayne Lambert of Shakesville Church of Christ, and Mr. Don Cooper of Bluefield College of Evangelism officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Farris Funeral Service is serving the family of Mr. Deel.

Robert Wayne Randolph
GRUNDY, Va. -- Robert Wayne Randolph, 33, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Erwin, Tenn., he was a son of Wayne Eugene Randolph of Erwin and Mrs. Janet Sue King Randolph Vanover of Grundy. He had been a resident of Grundy for several years, was a member of Johnson City Seventh-day Adventist Church and was a construction worker. Mr. Randolph is survived by his father, Wayne Eugene Randolph, Erwin; mother, Janet Sue King Randolph Vanover, Grundy; and stepfather, Terry Vanover, Grundy; one sister, Shana Altemos, St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers, Dathan Vanover, Blacksburg, Va., and Jonathan Vanover, Abingdon, Va.; and paternal grandmother, Kathleen Howell, Erwin. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Britney Nicole Randolph and maternal grandparents, Carson and Marie King. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 2, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Michael Trent and Pastor John Cooper officiating, with burial to follow in the Bob Yates Cemetery on Little Prater, Route 4, Grundy. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Thursday evening at 6 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Brian Burleson, Bobby Burleson, Gerald Burnette, Arthur Vanover, Darrel Deel, Jimmy Elswick and Luther Stacy. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jack Briggs, Sandy Duty, Rona Compton, Ples Stacy, Glemma Stacy and ICU staff at Buchanan General Hospital. Mrs. Goldie (Ethel) Mitchell
TAZEWELL COUNTY -- Mrs. Goldie (Ethel) Mitchell, 71, of the Bearwallow section passed away Friday, March 2, 2001, following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Dora Mitchell White, both Buchanan County natives. She was a 1947 graduate of Whitewood High School and taught school for several years. She was a member of Lake Park Freewill Baptist Church in Richlands. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer Horn, second husband, Mitchell Lyons, third husband, Paul Mitchell, five brothers, three sisters, and two infant children. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by one son, Donald Horn and wife, June, of Raven, Va.; four daughters, Kay Horn of Bristol, Va., Pamela Lester of Bearwallow, Lisa Horn of the home and Becki Lyons of Council, Va.; one sister, Bertha Clifton of Pekin, Ind.; two grandsons; two granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and one step-great-grandson also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at Lake Park Freewill Baptist Church in Richlands with Rev. Lawrence Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in the Jewell-White Cemetery at White Mountain, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at Lake Park Freewill Baptist Church after 5 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216 Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216. Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff is in charge of arrangements.
