Junior C. Justus
RICHLANDS -- Junior C. Justus, 81, of Richlands, Virginia, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, in Columbia Clinch Valley Hospital, Richlands. He had been a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, before moving to Richlands 19 years ago. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, a retired coal miner and a former employee of Richardson Furniture Company. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Chloe W. Hurley Justus; one daughter, Imadean Childress, Raven; five sons, Ronald Justus, Ray Justus and Glen Justus, all of Cedar Bluff, Irvin Justus, Pounding Mill, and Gerald Bryant Justus, North Tazewell; two grandsons; 11 granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Sarilda Boyd
Sarilda Boyd, 78, of 1208 Woods Road, Lynchburg, Virginia, formerly of Route 2, Haysi, died Friday, March 6, 1998, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was a native of Buchanan County, the widow of William R. "Bill" Boyd, and was a member of Russell Prater Church. Survivors include two sons, Ivan Boyd, Haysi, and Macie Boyd, Lynchburg; one foster son, Clifton Boyd, Lynchburg; four daughters, Mavis Deel, Haysi, Minnie Dell, Arbutus Justice and Polly Smith, all of Lynchburg; three sisters, Draxie Viers and Sarah Ann Deel, both of Vansant, and Emily Deel, Haysi; three brothers, Lilburn O'Quinn and Milton O'Quinn, both of Haysi, and Lawrence O'Quinn, Tazewell; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Virgil Lee Cook
Virgil Lee Cook, 66, of Council, Virginiadied Wednesday, March 4, 1998, in a Grundy, Va., hospital. He was a native of Derby, Va., and a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. He was employed as a coal miner, a machine operator with road construction for 30 years, and, most recently, was employed with Mac's Construction. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Jane Ball Cook; one daughter, Mrs. Johnny (Betty Ann) Martin, Honaker; two sons, Virgil Franklin Cook Jr., Honaker, and Arnold Jeffrey Cook, Council; his mother, Myrtle Mae Keen Cook Harris, Honaker; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Carrie Tiller Ratliff
Mrs. Carrie Tiller Ratliff, 92, of Council, Virginia, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, in a Grundy hospital. She was a native of Buchanan County, had resided in Buchanan County her entire life and attended the Free Will Baptist church. She was the widow of her first husband, Walker Tiller, and her second husband, Bob Ratliff. Survivors include four daughters, Thelma Viers, Prater, Virgie Hardy, Amarillo, Texas, Ida Fern Tiller, Honaker, and Iva Nell Ratliff, Leemaster; one son, E.B. Tiller, Council; one stepdaughter, Bertha Roman, Bristol Virginia; two sisters, Vertie Hawkins, Roanoke, and Pearl Owens, Maryland; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

Elder Spencer H. Burks
Elder Spencer H. Burks, 74, of the Clarks Valley Section of Russell County, Virginia, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, in a Richlands hospital. He was a native of Buchanan County, a farmer, coal miner and a well-known merchant in the Tazewell County and Russell County areas for many years before his retirement. He was a member of Holston Regular Baptist Church, Mendota, and a minister for 35 years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Leenell Coleman Burks; five sons, Danny Burks, Dave Burks and Nick Burks, all of Abingdon, Doug Burks, Belfast, Va., and Scotty Burks, Honaker; one daughter, Mrs. Joe (Donna) Keene, Richlands; one sister, Mrs. Elpha Stacy, Slate Creek, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Versie Leona Casey
Versie Leona Casey, 83, of 171 2nd Street, Bristol, Va., died Thursday, March 5, 1998, in a Bristol, Tenn., hospital. She was a native of Buchanan County, had lived in Bristol for 13 years, moving from Drill. She was of the Holiness faith and the widow of Luther Casey. Survivors include two sons, Fayne Casey, Bristol Virginia, and Earl Casey, Honaker; two sisters, Ethel Dye, Richlands, and Della Cardona, Houston; two grandsons; one step-grandson; one great-granddaughter; two step-great-granddaughters; and one step-great-grandson.

Ethel D. Delaney
Ethel D. Delaney, 90, of the Looney's Creek section of Buchanan County, Virginia, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, in Buchanan General Hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church for 51 years, and was a homemaker. She was the widow of Frank Delaney. Survivors include one daughter, Lucille Sebold, Grundy; two sons, Evans Delaney, Grundy, and Everett Delaney, Maxie, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Opal Looney, Grundy, and Mrs. Lexie McCoy, Arcadia, Fla.; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

John O. Hess
John O. Hess, 75, of Oakwood, Virginiadied Wednesday, March 4, 1998, in a Kingsport hospital. He was a native of Poplar Creek, Va., a lifelong resident of the Buchanan County area, a retired miner and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. He was of the Holiness faith. Survivors include his wife, Stella Marie Hess; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Brown, Richlands; one sister, Mrs. Pinkie Cochran; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

William "Bill" Matney
William "Bill" Matney, 80, of Patterson, Virginia died Monday, March 2, 1998, in Buchanan General Hospital. He was a native of Buchanan County, had lived in Maryland several years, moving back to Buchanan County after his retirement. He was a member of Patterson Church of Christ, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a retired employee with the State of Maryland. Survivors include three brothers, Ernest Matney, Dewey Matney and John Matney, all of Patterson; and several nieces and nephews.

Miss Dorothy O'Quinn
Miss Dorothy O'Quinn, 70, of 1121 McNeil Street, Bristol, Va., died Monday, March 2, 1998, in Bristol, Tenn. She was a native of Council, Va., had lived in Bristol for over 30 years, moving to Bristol from Honaker, and was a member of Belle Meadows Baptist Church, Bristol. Survivors include two sisters, Lucinda O'Quinn, Bristol Virginia, and Florence Coleman, Cedar Bluff; and several nieces and nephews.

Jettie Geraline Clevinger Slone
Jettie Geraline Clevinger Slone, 63, of Home Creek section of Buchanan County, Virginia, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at the home of her daughter in Kodak, Tenn. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church Number 2, and a homemaker. She was the widow of Lewis Franklin Slone. Survivors include four daughters, Bernice Owens, Dandridge, Tenn., Delores Blackburn and Freida Ratliff, both of Kodak, Tenn., and Peggy Slone, Hurley; one stepson, James Elmer Slone, Fort Gay, W.Va.; seven sisters, Ruby Hagy, Vansant, Burchie Vestal, Oakwood, Madge Rowe, Melba Lester, Laura Bell Clevinger and Wilma Baldwin, all of Grundy, and Shelby Jean Keene, Keen Mountain; three brothers, Kin Clevinger, Vansant, Kerksey Clevinger, Elkhorn City, Ky., and Everett Clevinger, Defiance, Ohio; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Andy Basil Cantrell
BUCHANAN COUNTY, Va. -- Funeral services for Andy Basil Cantrell will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain, Va. The Revs. Troy Lester and Ralph Horton will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill with military graveside rites by John Ratliff Post 164 of the Americna Legion. Mr. Cantrell, 74, of the Horne Mountain section died Friday, April 28, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. H.C. Scott, Dr. Larry Mitchell and Dr. G.V. Reddy. Buchanan Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
