Elbert Lee Cantrell
WHITEWOOD, VA. -- Elbert Lee Cantrell, 88, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late James H. and Mary Louise Boyd Cantrell. He was the widower of Nancy Rebecca Horn Cantrell. Surviving are a son, Beve Cantrell of Mosely, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Frances) Hughes of Whitewood and Mrs. Daniel (Ethel) Watson of Richlands; a sister, Rosie Keen of St. Paul; a brother, Raymond Cantrell of Pilgrim Knob, Va.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va. The Revs. Troy Lester and David Horton will officiate. Burial will be in Ferrell Family Cemetery on Horne Mountain. Mr. Cantrell was also preceded in death by two sons, Alden Cantrell and Victor Cantrell; and a grandson, Jerry Helton. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Buchanan Funeral Service.

Molly Asbury Gregory
CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Molly Asbury Gregory, 97, formerly of Vansant, Va., died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She was born in Bradshaw, W.Va., a daughter of the late Henry and Cosby Jewell Asbury. She had lived in Buchanan County several years and in Chesapeake for 20 years. She was a member of Taylor Road Baptist Church and the widow of Hulen Gregory. Surviving are a daughter, Jackie Yates of Chesapeake; three sons, Eugene Gregory of Smithfield, Va., Bill Gregory of Kansas City, Kan., and Richard Gregory of Carrolton, Va.; a sister, Florence Rife of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Burl Asbury of Jolo, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. John Zion and Jeff Slone will officiate. Burial will be in Looney Cemetery in Vansant. Mrs. Gregory was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ollie Hagy and Myrtle Mullins; and three brothers, Bill, Cleve and John Asbury. Among survivors are son-in-law Paul Yates of Chesapeake; and daughters-in-law, Nancy Gregory of Smithfield, Dee Gregory of Kansas City and Sandy Gregory of Carrolton. Pallbearers will be Rush Yates, Ralph Keen, Roger Hagerman, Steven Justus, Trinkle Coleman, Paul Yates and Roger Yates. Friends may call at 5 p.m. Saturday in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel.

William Matthew "Billy" Blankenship
HURLEY, Va. -- William Matthew "Billy" Blankenship, 29, died Friday, May 12, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a son of Billy C. and Lois Salmons Blankenship and attended the Old Regular Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Hurley High School Class of 1988. He was an employee of Rapoca Coal Co. Buchanan No. 2. Surviving, besides his parents, are a brother, David Tommy Blankenship of Hurley; maternal grandmother, Delphia Salmons of Hurley; and paternal grandmother, Mary Blankenship of Harman, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church in Wolford, Va. by Grundy Funeral Home. Elders Josh Justus Jr., James Stacy, Eddie Cooper, Bill McCoy, Kermit Lester and Gary Justus will officiate. Burial will be in Salmons Family Cemetery in Hurley. Mr. Blankenship was also preceded in death by an infant brother; maternal grandfather, Miles B. Salmons; paternal grandfather, Byrd Blankenship; and two cousins, Teddy Blankenship and Austine Salmons Jr. Among survivors are several uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. Pallbearers will be cousins. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Blankenship, Jerry Blankenship, Larry Blankenship, Freeman Blankenship, Lloyd Blankenship, Austine Salmons, Miles B. Salmons Jr., James Salmons, Tommy Salmons and Ora Salmons. Friends may call at 5 p.m. Sunday at North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church, where services will be held Sunday and Monday at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Ramey Hackney
BIG ROCK, Va. -- Gladys Ramey Hackney, 86, died Friday, May 12, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a daughter of the late William Albert and Matilda Ramey, and a member of the Jesus Only Church. She was the widow of Willie Hackney. Surviving are two daughters, Betty Jean Clevinger of Mouth Card, Ky., and Magdalene Bartley of Maxie, Va.; four sons, Jack Hackney of Abingdon, Herman A. Hackney of Mouth Card, William George Hackney of Grundy and Harold D. Hackney of Maxie; three sisters, Ollie Clevinger of Dublin, Va. and Dicie Slone and Irene Darnell, both of Mouth Card; two brothers, Leslie Ramey of Columbus, Ohio, and Elmer Ramey of Mouth Card; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Chapel. The Revs. Ralph Taylor, Jimmy Kerr, Ray Sawyers and Howard Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock. Mrs. Hackney was also preceded in death by two sons, Thomas F. and Eugene Hackney. Pallbearers will be Gary Bartley, Jerry Bartley, Charles Bartley, Ronald Clevinger, Michael Hackney, William Anthony Hackney, Mitchell Herman Bishop and Mark Hackney. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. D. Patel, Jonathan Bartley, Virgil Clevinger, Matthew Rife, Anthony Hackney, John D. Addison, Andy Scarberry, Brad Vandyke and Michael Shawn Hackney. Friends may call at 5 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home, where services will be held Sunday and Monday at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hubert Eugene Lester
BIG ROCK, Va. -- Hubert Eugene Lester, 40, died Friday, May 12, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol Tennessee. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a son of Ocie Taylor Lester and the late Miles Lester, and a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1978. He was of the Pentecostal faith and an employee of Buchanan County Transportation System. Surviving, besides his mother, are three sisters, Mary Coleman of Big Rock, Ruby Browning of Kingsport and Janice Phillips of Maxie, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Danny Hess, Darrell Davis and Michael Trent will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock. Mr. Lester was also preceded in death by a brother, Franklin D. Lester. Among survivors are brothers-in-law Jerry Coleman of Big Rock and John Browning of Kingsport. Pallbearers will be nephews. There will be services Sunday at 7 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel.

Jessie Honaker
GRUNDY -- Jessie Honaker, 78, died Monday, May 15, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol Tennessee. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Floyd and Lovis Cline Honaker. He was a member of Grundy Baptist Church for 43 years, where he served as a deacon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of corporal. He was the recipient of the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Co. and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. Surviving are his wife, Alta Keen Honaker; two daughters, Barbara H. Rowlett of Grundy and Lillian Keen of Lutz, Fla.; two sons, Steve Honaker of Abingdon and Johnny A. Honaker of Grundy; two sisters, June Matusiak of Baltimore and Estelle Gallager of Ironton, Ohio; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Baptist Church by Grundy Funeral Home. The Revs. Don Pope and Rick Ellis will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va., with full military rites by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Mr. Honaker was also preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Hurley, Etta Honaker and Mary Honaker; and six brothers, Matthew, Tilden, Garland, Floyd Jr., Oscar and Elliott Honaker. Among survivors are grandchildren Michael Rowlett, Jonathan Rowlett, Angela Baldwin, David Trent and Chris Looney; and great-granddaughter Haylee Alexis Baldwin. Pallbearers will be Michael Rowlette, Mike Lester, Brian Allen, Shannon Prater, Ted Newsome, Arlie Boyd, Lonnie Raines, Jay Rife, Homer Newsome and Charlie Wood. Honorary pallbearers will be Dillard Keen, Raymond Lester, Harold Lee Shortridge, Mike Yates, Chuck Crabtree, Scott Keen, Ross Mullins, Ronnie Stiltner, Doug Baldwin, Leonard Matney, James E. Dellinger, Dr. J.P. Sutherland Jr., Kenny Prater, current and former deacons of Grundy Baptist Church and the men of Grundy Baptist Church. Walter Breeding
BIG ROCK, Va. -- Walter Breeding, 61, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a son of the late Marion and Ocie Elswick Breeding. He graduated from Grundy High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Pittson Coal Corp. and a member of United Mine Workers of America. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Gilbert Breeding; a daughter, Alta Sue B. Looney of Breaks, Va.; two sons, Ray Allen Breeding of Vansant, Va., and Gary Edward Breeding of Abingdon; seven sisters, Dixie Cantrell, Ella Rose, Mary Feltcher and Alma Roark, all of Michigan, Gay Hutchinson of Pinckney, Mich., Ethel Corbett of Atlanta and Claudetta Glascox of Richlands; a brother, Marion Breeding Jr. of Big Rock; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bob Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock with full military rites by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Mr. Breeding was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Willard Breeding. Among survivors are son-in-law Lance Looney of Breaks; daughters-in-law Patricia Breeding of Vansant and Crystal Breeding of Abingdon; and grandchildren William Looney, Jonathan Looney and Alex Breeding. Pallbearers will be Scott Branham, Johnny Fletcher Jr., Jerry Fletcher, Bryan Hutchinson, Ronnie Cantrell and Danny Cordle. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. V. Modi, Bob Miller, Dr. Frank Sutherland, James Baird, Billie Bowman, Charles Bowman, Robert Bowman, Johnny Bowman, Earnest Blankenship, Bill Elswick, Dr. Pilla, Dr. Claustro and Richard Smith. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel, where a song service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virgil Curtis Mullins
BREAKS, Va. -- Virgil Curtis Mullins, 72, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at home. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Bruce and Laura Owens Mullins. He was a retired machinist for Unysis Corp. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, a graduate of Grundy High School and the widower of Lanora Spencer Mullins. Surviving are two daughters, Terri Renard of Breaks and Sandy Coombe of Dryden, Mich.; three sons, Michael Mullins of Lapeer, Mich., and David Mullins and Jimmie Harper, both of Warren, Mich.; two sisters, Lucille Mounts of Breaks and Ivel Harris of Chester, Va.; a brother, Robert Mullins of Oklahoma City; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. in Breaks Church of Christ by Grundy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Colley Cemetery in Breaks with full military rites by members of John Ratl iff Post 164 of the American Legion. Mr. Mullins was also preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce and Pauline Mullins; and two brothers, Kermit and Warren Mullins. Pallbearers will be Mike Mullins, David Mullins, Jerry Owens, Charles Mullins, Greg Owens and Robert Kelly. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Friday at the church. William James "JR" Tackett
HURLEY, Va. -- William James "JR" Tackett, 75, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at home. He was born in Harold, Ky., a son of the late Tapley Byron and Elizabeth Roberts Tackett. He had been a resident of Buchanan County for several years, and he was a member of Bethany Bible Church. He was a retired coal miner and merchant. Surviving are his wife, Ola K. Tackett; two sons, James B. Tackett and David Keith Tackett, both of Hurley; a sister, Georgia Runyon of Pikeville, Ky.; four brothers, Luther Tackett of Columbus, Ohio, Charles Tackett of Las Vegas, Nev., Garland Tackett of Slippery Rock, Pa., and Eugene Tackett of Pikeville, Ky.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Bethany Bible Church by Grundy Funeral Home. The Revs. Paul Rife, Ernest R. McCowan and Kenneth Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in Annie E. Young Cemetery in Pikeville. Mr. Tackett was also preceded in death by a sister; and three brothers. Among survivors are daughters-in-law Carolyn Sue Tackett and Patty Tackett, both of Hurley; grandchildren William Keith Tackett of Hurley and Christina Marinda Tackett of Canover, N.C.; great-grandchildren Taylor Thomas and Devin Thomas; and three special friends Ruby Potter, Rebecca Cooper and Debby Blevins. Abraham Lincoln White
PATTERSON, Va. -- Abraham Lincoln White, 72, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at home. He was born in McDowell County, W.Va., a son of the late Starlin and Millie Jane Street White. He had lived in Buchanan County for several years. He was a member of Deliverance Tabernacle Church and a member of IOOF Lodge 17 of Grundy. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Norfolk and Western Railway, with 41 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Mary Kathleen Owens White; five daughters, Elizabeth Ann Meadows of Vansant, Va., Barbara Lynn Matney of Patterson, Surbrena Carol Clevinger of Grundy, Patricia Gail Keen of Odenton, Md., and Aleta Jo Bowles of Statesville, N.C.; two sons, Willard White of Lynchburg, Va., and Kenneth R. White of Patterson; two sisters, Ethel Smith and Lottie Yates, both of Oakwood, Va.; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Deliverance Tabernacle Church in Patterson by Grundy Funeral Home. The Revs. Dewey Ward, T.R. Stump and Elmer Helton will officiate. Burial will be in Matney Cemetery in Patterson with full military rites by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Among survivors are sons-in-law David Meadows of Vansant, Timothy Matney of Patterson, Adrian Clevinger of Grundy, Ronnie Keen of Odenton and Timothy Bowles of Statesville; and daughter-in-law Carolyn White of Lynchburg. Pallbearers will be Scotty Matney, Joey White, Terry White, Josh White, Jeff McCracken, Ryan Stiltner, Richard Brown, Tim Bowles and Kelly White. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Blankenship, Clell Daniels, LeRoy Vandyke, Fred Meadows, Carmel Deel, Buddy Bowman and Chuck Neal. Flower bearers will be granddaughters.
