Edward Joseph (Edd J.) Keene
ROWE, Va. -- Edward Joseph (Edd J.) Keene, 80, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Peter Cleveland and Lou Emma Lowe Keene. He had spent most of his life in the Rowe area. He was a retired coal operator. He was a member of the Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church for 50 years, serving as a deacon for 35 years. He was the widower of State Ira Keene. Surviving are three daughters, Shelva Jean Compton of Richlands and Patty Sue Keen and Vada Baldwin, both of Rowe; three sons, Dallas Carl Keene of Morganton, N.C., Joseph Edward Keene of Richlands and Dalma (Dale) Keene of Tazewell; two sisters, Juanita Street of Ashboro, N.C., and Minnie Hess of Burlington, N.C.; 28 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker. The Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. Mr. Keene was also preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Joan Compton; and a son, Joseph Roy Keene. Among survivors are sons-in-law Sturgle Compton of Richlands and Harlis Keen and Ned Baldwin, both of Rowe; daughters-in-law Donna Keene of Richlands and Kathy Keene of Tazewell; and a special son-in-law, Don Compton. Pallbearers will be grandsons and granddaugthers. Honorary pallbearers will be the nursing staff of Medshares Home Healthcare, Janie Fleming and the staff of Stat Medical Equipment. Friends may call any time Thursday in the funeral home where a service will be held at 7 p.m. Honaker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Clarence Tackett
BUCHANAN COUNTY, Va. -- Funeral services for Frank Clarence Tackett will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Buchanan Funeral Service in Keen Mountain, Va. The Rev. Carl Ball will officiate. Burial will be in Davis Cemetery on Davis Mountain. Mr. Tackett, 57, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at home. He was born in Aberdale, W.Va., a son of the late Wilber and Maxie Newsom Tackett. He was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Co. and a member of UMWA Local 1374. He was of the Holiness faith. Surviving are his wife, Opal Tackett; four sons, Scotty Dean Tackett of Graham, N.C., Marty Tackett of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kennell Ray Tackett of Pittsboro, N.C., and Steve Franklin Tackett of Raven, Va.; four sisters, Geraldine Overton and Alfie Stroud, both of North Carolina, and Barbara Hall and Geniva Hall, both of Kentucky; four brothers, Bert Tackett, Carl Tackett and Edgar Tackett, all of North Carolina, and Rex Tackett of Georgia; and two grandchildren. Mr. Tackett was also preceded in death by a sister, Carol Bennett. Among survivors are grandchildren Chasity Martin and Joseph Randall Tackett. Pallbearers will be Joe Tackett, Johnny Johnson Jr., Doug Keen, Aaron Helton, Jimmy Knight and Larry Rose. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Buchanan Funeral Service.

Hazel Nancy Short Hale
VANSANT, Va. -- Funeral services for Hazel Nancy Short Hale will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain, Va. Roger Street and the Revs. Fred Rife Jr., Charles Hubbard and George Durham will officiate. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery at Hale Creek, Va. Mrs. Hale, 73, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Buchanan County, Va., a daughter of the late Paris Orville and Lou VanDyke Short, and was a member of the Church of God. She was the widow of Ervin Arwood Hale. Surviving are three daughters, Betty Sparks of Cedar Bluff, Va., Nancy White of Spotsylvania, Va., and Faye Looney of Vansant; six sons, Ronnie Hale of Richlands, Billy Hale of Dismal, Va., Leon Hale of Vansant, David Hale and John Michael Hale, both of Bristol Virginia, and Bobby Hale of Thomasville, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Meadows of Seaford, Del., Dora Cook of Bald Knob, W.Va., and Mae Hale of Bradshaw, W.Va.; a brother, Dock Short of Powhatan, Va.; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hale was also preceded in death by three sisters, Chloe Sparks and Ida and Edra Short; and two brothers, Howard and Arthur Short. Pallbearers will be Thomas Halstead, Bob Rose, Thurman Payne, Bruce Rife, David Payne and Lee Charles. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in Buchanan Funeral Service at Keen Mountain, Va.

Clyde Keen
JEWELL VALLEY, Va. -- Funeral services for Clyde Keen will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands. The Revs. Joe Gross and Clayle Daniels will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va., with military graveside rites by members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 of Richlands and Disabled American Veterans Tazewell County Chapter 31. Mr. Keen, 84, died Friday, June 23, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late Glen and Della Cox Keen, was a lifelong resident of the Jewell Valley area and a member of the Rosa Cole Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Woosley Camp Holiness Church. He was a retired miner for Jewell Ridge Coal Corp at Jewell Valley, a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7327 and a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant. Surviving are his wife, Hazel Adams Keen; a daughter, Mrs. Tommie (Debbie) Breeden of Jewell Valley; a son, Donnie Ray Keen of Jewell Valley; a sister, Elsie Hicks of Roanoke; a brother, Dennis Keen of Bandy, Va.; five grandsons; four great-grandsons; and a great-granddaughter. Mr. Keen was also preceded in death by a sister, Vernie K. Lockhart; and three brothers, Rayle and Earl Keen and Cecil Cox. Among survivors are grandsons, Nathan Glen Keen and wife Mary, Michael Kevin Keen, Wesley Ray Keen, Joshua Albert Breeden and Sean Thomas Breeden; great-grandsons Cole Saber Keen, Matthew Aaron Keen, Tyler Blane Keen and Logan Todd Keen; and great-granddaughter Savanah Jamison. Pallbearers will be Winfred McGlothlin, Larry Joe Keen, Ernest Ray Vandyke, Jeffery Lamie, Dale Keen and Dennis Keen Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Rosa Cole Pentecostal Holiness Church and Woosley Camp Holiness Church. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday in Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Georgia Ann Perkey
OCOEE, Fla. -- Funeral services for Georgia Ann Perkey will be conducted Sunday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mike Leonard and Billy Merritt will officiate. Committal services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Tri-Cities Memory Gardens. A procession of family and friends will leave the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Monday. Mrs. Perkey, 76, of 2420 Johio Bay Drive, formerly of 635 Bristol Caverns Highway, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the home of her daughter. She was born in Patterson, in Buchanan County, Va., a daughter of the late Sam Matney and Laura Matney, had lived in Bristol since 1965 and moved to Ocoee four months ago. She was a homemaker, a member of State Street Church of Christ and the widow of Robert C. Perkey. Surviving are five daughters, Shelma Blaylock of Jefferson City, Tenn., Patricia Medlin of Jonesborough, Tenn., Bobbie Newman of Ocoee, Shirley Reed of Blountville and Penny Millard of Bristol Virginia; five sons, Robert W. Perkey of Hickory, N.C., David Perkey, James Perkey and Don Perkey, all of Bristol Tennessee, and Ronnie K. Perkey of Merritt Island, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Perkey was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Newman; and a granddaughter, Kay Bowman. She was a loving mother. Pallbearers will be grandsons and sons-in-law. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home or any time at the home of a daughter, Shirley Reed, 3960 Highway 126, Blountville, Tenn. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ryland Eugene Ball
COUNCIL, Va. -- Ryland Eugene Ball, 66, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late Irving Ball Sr. and Rachel Smith Ball, and had spent most of his life in the Council area. He was a member of the Venia Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, a farmer and timberman, and operated Council Service Station for several years. Surviving are his wife, Helen Compton Ball; three daughters, Patty Harrigan of Duffield, Va., and Mrs. Charlie (Ronda) Bostic and Mrs. Ronald (Janet) Bostic, both of Council; four sons, Lonnie Ball and Leslie Ball, both of Council, and Kennie Ball and Marlie Ball, both of Honaker; 11 grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Guy Harris and Giles Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in the Family Cemetery on Fletcher Ridge, Va. Mr. Ball was also preceded in death by a brother, Irving Ball Jr. Pallbearers will be nephews.BR> Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday in Honaker Funeral Home.

Thurman Walls Stacy
GRUNDY -- Funeral services for Thurman Walls Stacy will be conducted Tuesday at 11 am. in the Bee Branch Old Regular Baptist Church on Slate Creek by Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home. Elders Roscoe Crouse, Curtis Crouse, Roger Coleman, Hershel Hurley and David Lester will officiate. Entombment will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. with full military rites by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Mr. Stacy, 69, of the Slate Creek Section of Buchanan County, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Joe G. Stacy and Elpha Burks Stacy, was a retired truck driver and heavy-equipment operator and a veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1948-50. He was a 40-year member of the Bee Branch Old Regular Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Nora Ward Stacy; five daughters, Linda Childress and Mrs. Eugene (Mona) Anderson, both of Abingdon, Mrs. Joe (Vickie) Keene and Mrs. Donald (Rita) Matney, both of Grundy, and Mrs. Tim (Kimberly) Ratliff of Rosedale, Va.; five granddaughters; and four grandsons. Mr. Stacy was also preceded in death by two sisters, Emma and Cynthia Stacy. Among survivors are granddaughters Amy Street, Amanda Keene, Keisha Matney, Sara Ratliff and Michele Anderson; and grandsons Anthony Keene, Brandon Matney, Christopher Childress and Daniel Ratliff. Pallbearers will be Joe Keene, Donald R. Matney, Tim W. Ratliff, Eugene Anderson, Anthony Keene, Brandon Matney, Christopher Childress, Josh Street and Daniel Ratliff. Honorary pallbearers will be Jess Mullins, Dr. V. Modi, Chad Stiltner, Sandy Blankenship, Hazel Gibson, Reual Ratliff, Perry Matney, Willie Keene, Jeff Burks, third floor nursing staff at Buchanan General Hospital, Total Home Health Care staff, employees and brothers of Bee Branch Old Regular Baptist Church, Lonzo Ward and Woodrow Ward.BR> Services will be held at the church Monday at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Building Fund of Bee Branch Old Regular Baptist Church. Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ollie Virginia Ball Dale
VANSANT -- Ollie Virginia Ball Dale, 71, of the Deskins area died Monday, June 26, 2000, at home. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Henry and Naomi Price Ball. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Sayer Brothers and Magic Mart. She was the widow of Charlie Dale. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Nairn of Henderson, Nev.; two sons, Ervin Dale of Vansant and Carter Lockhart of Newport News, Va.; three stepdaughters, Mildred Wing of Houston and Thelma Whittington and Bernadine Lochlear, both of Baltimore; a stepson, Billy Dale of Lake Anna, Va.; five sisters, Margie Stiltner of Hurley, Va., Naomi Baldwin of West Virginia, Lola Anne Cook of Falls Church, Va., Martha Foster of Kannapolis, N.C., and Ocie Barton of Davenport, Va.; three brothers, Billy Ball of Council, Va., Jimmy Lee Ball of Abingdon and Roy Ball of Davenport; three grandchildren; 17 step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. LeRoy Wilson and Giles Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Mrs. Dale was also preceded in death by a son, Larry Winford Dale; two sisters, Edna Thomas Whitt and Maudie Rose; two brothers, Everett Ball and Henry Harmon Ball; a stepdaughter, Edith Owens; and two stepsons, Johnny and Charles Dale. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel where services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. ROCKY MOUNT, Va. -- Funeral services for Albert Gene "A.G." Honaker will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker. The Rev. Frank Johnson will officiate. Burial will be Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Mr. Honaker, 55, died Monday, June 26, 2000, in a Rocky Mount hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late William Lee and Sue Elmer Honaker. He had lived in the Roanoke area for eight years, moving to Rocky Mount five years ago. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School in Lebanon. He attended Lake Drive Church of Christ in Vinton, Va., and was employed as a diesel mechanic by Pepsi Co. in Roanoke. Surviving are his wife, Judy Johnson Honaker; four sons, Scottie Honaker of Charleston, S.C., Stevie Honaker and Michael Honaker, both of the home, and Phillip Honaker of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Shelby Jean Johnson of Roanoke and Margaret McClanahan of Mavisdale, Va.; and a brother, Bobby Dean Honaker of Mavisdale. Mr. Honaker was also preceded in death by a son, Jared Honaker. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday in Honaker Funeral Home.

Morgan O'Quinn
HAYSI, Va. -- Morgan O'Quinn, 85, of Route 2, Greenbrier Community died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Joshua and Lillie Belle Thomas O'Quinn. He was a retired coal mine operator. He attended the Old Regular Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Ethel Raines O'Quinn; four sons, Curtis O'Quinn of Haysi, Louie O'Quinn and Kenneth O'Quinn, both of Vansant, and Jerry O'Quinn of Tazewell, Tenn.; three daughters, Mildred Boyd, Sally O'Quinn and Betty Lou Deel, all of Haysi; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.n. in Haysi Funeral Home Chapel. Elders Jackie Church and Jerry Matney will officiate. Burial will be in O'Quinn-Deel Cemetery at Route 2, Haysi. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where a service will be held at 7 p.m. The Rev. Darrell Thacker and elder Frank Newsome will officiate. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
