Painter
Rex F. Painter, age 76, of Cripple Creek, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 1996 at the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mr. Painter was an active member of Crockett Chapel United Methodist Church in Cripple Creek. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge for 54 years, was a former member of Wythe County Electoral Board, former member of the Wythe Lions Club and the ASCS Board. He retired from the Virginia ABC Board after 22 years of service and was a prominent Wythe County farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Whitman Painter of Cripple Creek; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth Painter and Dick Willard of Cripple Creek; one brother and sister-in-law, Blair S. and Jean Painter of Cripple Creek; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Crockett Chapel United Methodist Church in Cripple Creek with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating. Burial followed in Fleming Cemetery. Poston
Shirley McVey Poston, age 56, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996 at her home in Chilhowie. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one son, Howard Kenneth Poston, Chilhowie; two daughters, Deborah Cox, Galax, and Jeanna Poston, Bristol, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Jason and Heidi Ring and Kelly Poston.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm. Monday, Dec. 9, at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Frank Branson officiating. Interment followed in the Middlefork Cemetery.

Stamper
Leabelle D. Stamper, age 79, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996 at her home in Konnarock. She was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and had lived in Konnarock most of her life.
Mrs. Stamper was a member of the Konnarock Seventh Day Adventist Church and a member of the Damascus Senior Citizens.
She was the widow of Worth Thomas Stamper. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lillie Rupard Perry; two daughters, Virginia Ruth Shepard and Ethel Lea Jones.
Survivors include six daughters: Louellen Fleming, Lilburn, Ga., Edna Johnson, Lansing, N.C., Lillie Rose Holeman, Charlotte, N.C., Mary Frances Barr and Anita K. Severt, both of Konnarock, and Alicia Richardson, Sugar Grove; three sons, Dennis Albert Stamper and Danny Thomas Stamper, both of Konnarock, and Donnie Everett Stamper, Whitetop; one sister, Ethel Wiles, Lake Worth, Fla.; one brother, Ralph Perry, Aberdeen, Md.; 25 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in Konnarock Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Ron Ihrig officiating. Interment was in the Azen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family, c/o Anita Severt, 40025 Horsepen Road, Damascus, VA 24236.

Thomas
Roger Dale Thomas, age 40, of Marion, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996 in Marion.
Mr. Thomas was a native of Smyth County and had lived most of his life in Marion. He was employed at Marley Mouldings for the past six years and was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Thomas.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Thomas, Marion; two daughters, LaDona Dawn Thomas and Brittney Danielle Thomas, both of the home; his father, Sammy Roger Thomas, Marion; one sister, Dana Lynn Fletcher, Marion; his grandmother, Bessie Faye Blevins, Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Chapman and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Brooks
Gladys Anderson Brooks, age 86, widow of Glen Brooks, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. Mrs. Brooks was a member of the Comers Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Virginia McClanahan, Marion, and Pearl B. and J.C. Lane of Flatridge; seven sons and four daughters-in-law: Earl Brooks of Marion, Pete Brooks of Freesburg, Ill., Blaine and Carolyn Brooks, and Rex and Kay Brooks, all of Sugar Grove, Glen Jackson and Joyce Brooks of Konnarock, Garland Brooks of Flatridge, and David and Ruby Brooks of Powhatan; five sisters: Hassie Grinstead and Hattie Testerman, both of Marion, Mary Tolliver and Dolly Cullop, both of Troutdale, Selvia Cannella of Joppa, Md.; one brother, Bane Anderson of Troutdale; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren.

Heldreth
Patsy A. Heldreth, age 61, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996 at her home in Masaryktown, Fla.
She was a native of Groseclose and had moved to Masaryktown 30 years ago. She was a homemaker and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include three sons, Mike Evans, Sugar Grove, Steve Evans, Chilhowie, and Travis Heldreth, Richmond; two daughters, Jill Bailey, Abingdon, and Rebecka Heldreth, Masaryktown, Fla.; one sister, Virginia Shepherd, Spring Hill, Fla.; seven grandchildren.

McCready
Christine Haynes McCready, age 75, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1996 in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn.
She was a member of McCready United Methodist Church and was the widow of Carl McCready.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie McCready, Bristol, and Jeff McCready, Saltville; three daughters, Mrs. Ken (Mary) Schott, San Antonio, Texas., Mrs. David (Joan) Bansemer, Bristol, and Mrs. Mac (Pat) Buchanan, Saltville; one sister, Olivene McCready, Niceville, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in McCready United Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard Hawk officiating. Burial was in Elizabeth Cemetery. Memorials may be made to McCready United Methodist Church, Saltville.

Earl Trent, age 68, of the Widener's Valley Community, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1996 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
Survivors include his wife, Elruth Trent; four sons, Eddie Dean Trent, Meadowview, Harold Junior Trent, Glade Spring, Tommy Trent, Chilhowie, and Ricky Trent, Damascus; two brothers, Billy Trent and Jack Trent, both of Glade Spring; two sisters, Helen Caroll and Carolyn Caldwell, both of North Carolina; three half-sisters, Martha Owens, Abingdon, Nellie McCracken, Damascus, and Mary Milhorne,
Johnson City, Tenn.; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Blevins
Mamie Lee Blevins, age 89, of Marion, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996 in Francis Marion Manor. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Camie Blevins, and a son, James Camie Blevins Jr.
She is survived by one daughter, Lois Blevins, Chilhowie; one son, H.L. Blevins, Glade Spring; 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at the Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. Burial followed in the Cleghorn Cemetery.
