Blevins

Charles Woodrow Blevins, age 77, of Chilhowie, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a retired employee of the Pepsi-Cola Co., Marion.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Emily Tuell Blevins; one son, Charles William Blevins, Chilhowie; three daughters, Rosie Overbay, Alice Sue Sheets, both of Chilhowie, and Marie Shupe, Max Meadows; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lloyd L. Sheets officiating. Burial was in the Grosses Creek Cemetery.

Williams Funeral Home in Chilhowie was in charge of arrangements.

Calhoun

Carey Evans Calhoun, age 35, of Bristol, Tenn., formerly of Sugar Grove, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997 in Johnson City Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident in Elizabethton, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold K. Calhoun, Sugar Grove and Bartow, W.Va.

She was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and was employed by HFS Inc. in Elizabethton.

Survivors include her mother, Marguerite R. "Meg" Calhoun, Bluff City, Tenn.; three sisters, Ann B. Jones, Bluff City, Tenn., Pamela Hannam, Arlington, and Pat Samuels, Columbia, Mo.; one brother, Peter S. Barrow, Silver Spring, Md.

Funeral services and burial were held in Arbovale, W.Va.

Memorial donations may be sent to No-Kill Cat Shelter, 26474 Honey Locust Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.

Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol was in charge of local arrangements.

Powers

Mabel Gwyn Powers, age 83, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 in Francis Marion Manor.

Mrs. Powers was the widow of Avery Isaac Powers and a member of the Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lois Powers.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Howard (June) Richardson, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Carson L. and Kathleen Powers, Marion; one brother, Clarence Powers, Chilhowie; five sisters, Virginia Heath, Grey Grinstead, and June Brinkley, all of Chilhowie, May Gibson, Aliceville, Ala., and Dorothy Pollard, Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. in Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Burial will follow in the McClure Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carter

Rev. C.F. Carter, age 88, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 at his home in Sugar Grove.

Rev. Carter was a minister for the Church of God of Prophecy for more than 40 years and was a member of the Home Builders Association. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Willie Lee Carter.

He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Testerman Carter of Sugar Grove; three daughters, Nell Masters of Augusta, Ga., Maxine Woodard of New Castle, Del., and Bobby Joyce Neal of Wilmington, Del.; four sons: Vernon C. Carter and Richard L. Carter, both of New Castle, Del., Lewis Carter of Newark, Del., and Randall E. Carter of Bear, Del.; five stepchildren including a special stepson, Ed Testerman of Speedwell; 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at McCrery Memorial Chapel in Wilmington, Del. Burial followed in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, Del.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Felty

Edith Edna Martin Felty, age 102, of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

She was born Feb. 18, 1894 in Greenwood, the daughter of the late John William and Matilda Jane Moyer Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Felty and an infant son.

Mrs. Felty graduated from Greenwood High School and Roanoke Business College. She came to Wytheville and accepted a position with the S.F. Ewald Insurance Agency in 1914. She joined the St. Paul Methodist Church in 1915 where she taught Sunday School for 50 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Willis L. (Helen) Corvin, and Mrs. William L. (Margaret) Snavely of Wytheville; four grandchildren, William B. and Mary Corvin, Herndon, Willis G. and Loretta Corvin, Thaxton, Lynda H. and Ray Dossett, Morehead City, N.C., Robert J. and Caroline Hurt, Smithfield; one step-grandson, Michael and Teresa Snavely, Marion; 11 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Maude Du Bois, Milford, Penn.; one sister-in-law, Myrtle Repass, Birdmont Health Care Center; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with interment in the East End Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church or the West End United Methodist Church.

Gullion

Sherman "Dude" Gullion, age 66, died Monday, Jan.
6, 1997 at his home in Marion.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Powell Gullion of Marion; two daughters, Pam Gullion of Abingdon, and Angela Barr of Chilhowie; one son, Kevin Gullion of Atkins; one brother, Daniel Gullion of Dublin; three grandchildren, Jarrett Gullion, Tristian Barr and Colin Gullion.

Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Seaver- Brown Chapel with burial in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

Harris

Helen Aldena Farmer Harris, age 78, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997 at her home in Lehigh Acres, Fla.

Born in Rugby, Mrs. Harris was a member of the Women's Army Corp and attached to the Pentagon during World War II, as well as working for the Secret Service. She was a staunch Republican and a member of the First Baptist Church in Lehigh Acres, Fla.

She is survived by her husband, Edmund Harris of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; two daughters, Karen Lynn Harris Milam of York, Penn., and Pamela Lee Ragland of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; two sons, Donald H. Harris of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Kevin P. Harris of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; three sisters, Zuria Austin of Austin, Texas, Stella Faye Farmer and Ada Marie Tilson, both of Marion; two brothers, Robert Farmer and Jack Farmer, both of Marion; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Haw Orchard Baptist Church, Grayson County, with the Rev. Rex Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Haw Orchard Cemetery. The eulogy will be given by her oldest granddaughter, Dawn Michelle Gully. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Hope Hospice, 205 E. Joel Blvd., Lehigh Acres, Fla.

Kirk

Beulah Sheets Kirk, age 95, widow of Glenn M. Kirk, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997. Mrs. Kirk was a member of Comers Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by six daughters, Mary Lee Kirk, Pauline Pickle, and Helen Barnes, all of Marion, Opal Stamper of Chilhowie, Charlotte Childers of Spartanburg, S.C., and Carol Caldwell of Bluefield, W.Va.; three sons, Gene Lowman of Sugar Grove, Frank Lowman of Columbus, Ind., and Ray Lowman, Bel-Air, Md.; one stepdaughter, Katherine Stone of Marion; two stepsons, James Kirk of Christiansburg, and Ralph Kirk of Salem; one brother, Gordie Sheets of Sugar Grove; 54 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Price and the Rev. Roger Frost officiating. Burial followed in West Cemetery in Marion.
