Leslie

Reginald W. Leslie, age 74, of Glade Spring, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include one son, Glen Leslie, Glade Spring; one daughter, Glenda Leslie, Glade Spring; three grandchildren, Gary Leslie, Leigh Leslie, and Derrick Leslie, all of Glade Spring; one great-granddaughter.

Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, in Mt. Rose Cemetery with the Rev. Wiley Mayo officiating. Donations may be made to Glade Spring Rescue Squad.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

McBride

Carrie Evelyn Rader Jonas McBride, age 60, of Atkins, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 at the Wytheville Community Hospital.

Mrs. McBride was a native of Tennessee, but had lived in Smyth County for several years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Rader; one son, Michael A. Jonas; and two brothers, F.D. Rader and Henry Rader.

Survivors include her husband, N. Lee McBride, Atkins; her mother, Faye Mickels, Greensboro, N.C.; three daughters, Sharon A. Minter, Rural Retreat, Mitzi G. Nelson, Marion, and Deena R. King, Climax, N.C.; two sons, Douglas G. Jonas, Blacksburg, and Jonathan F.W. Jonas, Bluefield, W.Va.; one brother, Jay D. Rader, Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Mary F. Felts, Phoenix, Ariz., Dorothy A. Beasley, Pensacola, Fla., and Wilma L. Rader, Burlington, N.J.; 24 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment followed in the Round Hill Cemetery.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Morrell

Annie Crumley Morrell, age 93, of Bristol, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Daniel Morrell, and two daughters, Rosemary Westfall and Glenna Nease.

She was owner and operator of Goose Pimple Junction Grocery with her husband. She had been a pianist for many years at area churches. She was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include one son, David Morrell, Chilhowie; one brother, Hal Crumley, Gray, Tenn.; seven grandchildren including a special granddaughter, Anna Gentry, Abingdon; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jack Garland officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Akard Funeral Home in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Osborne

Robert L. Osborne, age 70, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 at his
home in Saltville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Havens) Osborne.

Survivors include three sons, Howard Osborne and Willis Osborne, both of Saltville, and Charles Osborne, Chilhowie; four grandchildren; one great-grandson.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Surber and the Rev. Curt Havens officiating. Burial was in the Ridgedale Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Powers

Hazel Taylor Powers, age 89, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mrs. Powers was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and had lived most of her life in Smyth County. She was the widow of Vaughn J. Powers and a member of Parker's Chapel Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Bud (Ethel B.) Ashby, Chilhowie; six sons and daughters-in-law: Howard L. and June Richardson, Earl G. and Irene Powers, Rev. Joe D. and Norma Powers, Jessie Blain and Wanda Powers, and V.J. and Molly Powers, all of Marion, and Ronnie F. Powers, Chilhowie; a special son-in-law, Bud Ashby; two sisters, Blanche Stamper, Chilhowie, Grace Martin, Chicago, Ill.; 37 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. in Parker's Chapel, Dry Fork, with the Rev. Chester Hensley and the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Church Cemetery.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Scott

Azel "A" Scott, age 75, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

He was a resident of the Hayter's Gap Community where he operated the A.E. Scott Grocery for many years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Kennedy Scott; one daughter, Mitzi J. Burkett, Mesa, Ariz.; three brothers, Sunshine Scott and Clyde Scott, both of Abingdon, and Bascom Scott, Palmyra; two sisters, Cleo Mays and Shirley Hagy, both of Abingdon; one granddaughter, Chelsey Burkett, Mesa, Ariz.

Graveside services will be conducted today, Jan. 8, at 2:30 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Moses Salyer officiating. Family and friends may assemble at the funeral home at 2 p.m. for a procession to the cemetery.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.

Smith

Thomas Taylor Smith, age 83, formerly of Marion, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997 in the South Fulton Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

Mr. Thomas lived most of his life in the Marion area before moving to Atlanta for the past year and a half. He was a graduate of the Bluefield State College. He worked as a brickmason in the Marion and Wytheville areas having been a part of the construction of many buildings in the downtown area.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Smith, Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Sandra Moody and Tomasina Barnes, both of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Karen Barnes and Shelli Barnes, both of Atlanta, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, David Campbell-Moody, Troy Campbell-Moody, and Korey Campbell-Moody; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill E. Hinton and the Rev. Carol Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow in the Round Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Snavely

William Luther (Bill) Snavely, age 78, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Mr. Snavely was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Frank and Lena BaumGardner Snavely. He was a lifetime member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat where he served as a councilman and trustee, a past member of the Wythe County Rescue Squad, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a shop foreman at new car dealerships in Wythe and Smyth counties for over 50 years.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Hurt Snavely of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teresa Snavely of Marion; two granddaughters, Kara Snavely and Ashley Snavely; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Lynda and Ray Dossett, Morehead City, N.C.; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Robert and Caroline Hurt, Smithfield; four step-grandsons, Keith and Todd Dossett, Darden and Robby Hurt; one step-great-granddaughter, Megan Dossett.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger, the Rev. Norman Wilhoit, and Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 478, Rural Retreat, VA 24368 or the charity of their choice.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat was in charge of arrangements.
