David A. Lawson
David Arnold "Soupy" Lawson, 56, of 1991 Stone Dairy Road, Bassett, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at his home.
He was born in Galax on Feb. 1, 1950, to Arnold Lawson and Sylvia Quesenberry Vaughn. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was employed at Davenport Energy with over 20 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda Lawson; a daughter, Michelle Renae Lawson Stephen of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sons, David Eric Lawon and Darrell Edward Lawson, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, James Otis Lawson of Collinsville; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with Minister Tim Wood officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Norris Funeral Services.
Arrangements are by Norris Funeral Services.

Massie Short
Massie Short, 69, of Bassett, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2005 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Bassett Funeral Service will announce arrangements.

Christine C. Washburn
Christine Curran Washburn, 48, of 1751 Morningside Drive, Bassett, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born in Martinsville on May 17, 1957, to Richard "Dick" Curran and Nancy Curran. She was preceded in death by her father.
She was a hostess at the Dutch Inn.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Washburn II of Bassett; a daughter, Crystal Whitlow of Ind.; a son, David Tuttle of Bassett; a sister, Connie Grodensky of Martinsville; two brothers, Steve Curran of Chilhowie and David Curran of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held.
Arrangements are by Norris Funeral Services.

Myrtle E. Clark
The funeral for Myrtle Estelle Clark, 81, of 25 High Ridge St., Fieldale, who died March 5, 2005, at her home, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Fieldale Baptist Church with Dr. Joe Bryant officiating. Burial will be in the Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church for one hour before the funeral.
She was born in Fieldale on Sept. 27, 1924, to John Richard Clark and Lelia Nichols Clark. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Esther C. Martin, Blanche Clark, Virgie C. Martin and Louella C. Martin, and two brothers, Carl R. Clark and Johnnie C. Clark.
She retired from Tultex in 1987 and was a member of Fieldale Baptist Church.
Surviving are her twin sister, Mary Odell Arnold of Gainesville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Collins Funeral Services at Bassett is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Colston
Robert "Ed" Colston, 89, of Bassett, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Blue Ride Rehab Center in Martinsville.
He was born June 28, 1916, in North Carolina to William Colston and Vertie Triplett Colston. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Renee and Phillip Colston; a brother, Walter Colston; and a sister, Dorothy Colston.
He retired from Stanley Furniture Co. after 38 years of service. Colston was a member of Fort Trial Christian Church where he was a deacon and a member of the Adult Sunday School class and the men's club.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Susie Colston of the home; a son, David Colston of Fayetteville, N.C.; a daughter, Betty C. Moore of Collinsville; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Mayford Colston of Bassett.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Trial Christian Church with Minister Lee Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the church.
Memorials may be made to Fort Trial Christian Church, 6368 Virginia Ave., Bassett, Va. 24055.
Bassett Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Maurice E. Dillard
Maurice E. "Moe" Dillard, 52, of 444 Wells Hollow Road, Bassett, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount. He was the husband of Vanessa Wimbush Dillard.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Collins Funeral Services in Bassett.

Doris L. Harris
The funeral for Doris Louellen Harris, 67, of 175 Shelton Circle, Stuart, who died March 5, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Northside Baptist Church at Bassett with Pastor Ron Peal and the Rev. Gilbert Hawks officiating. Burial will be in the Pinkerton and Shelton family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Services in Bassett from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
She was born June 1, 1938, in Caswell County, N.C., to Robert Randolph Bowles and Ruth Lavern Brown. They preceded her in death.
She had provided child care and foster care from her home. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Samuel Graham Harris of the home; a daughter, Cathy Louverne Rorrer of Stuart; three sons, Randy Graham Harris of Stuart, Tony Dale Harris of Bassett and Timothy Lee Harris of Stuart; a sister, Annie Mae Reynolds of Danville; three brothers Curtis Randolph Bowles and Roger Lee Bowles, both of Bassett, and Ronald Allen Bowles of Ridgeway; five grandsons; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary G. Jenkins
Mary Grimes Jenkins, 85, of 800 King's Way Road, Kings Grant Community, Martinsville, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at her home.
She was born in Lynchburg on Jan. 26, 1921, to Jessie Orville Grimes and Mary Estella Callahan Grimes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Richard Jenkins Jr.; a son, Dr. Larry Richard Jenkins; and a brother, Edwin Grimes.
She retired as a librarian with the Virginia School System and moved to Kings Grant, where she helped organize and develop the Kings Grant Library. She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church.
Surviving is one daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Jo Jenkins of Cary, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Kings Grant Victory Chapel. A private burial will be held at Mountain View Cemetery at Clifton Forge.
Memorials may be made to the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, P.O. Box 326, Collinsville, Va. 24078, or the Clifton Forge United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 16, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.

William Joyce Sr.
A memorial service for William Joyce Sr., 65, of 864 Crestview Drive, Bassett, who died March 2, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bibleway Holiness Church, 155 Moses-Moore Drive, Bassett. Elder Randy Martin will officiate.
Visitation will be held at the church from 6 p.m. until the service Thursday.

Earnest R. Lawson
The funeral for Earnest R. Lawson, 77, of Patrick Springs, who died March 5, 2006, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick Memorial Hospital in Stuart, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. The Revs. Curtis Hall and Bernard Handy will officiate.
Burial will be in Minnie's Chapel Wesleyan Church cemetery with military honors by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service.
Lawson was born in Patrick County on May 2, 1928, to Novice and Nettie Thompson Lawson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Hester Fain; and two brothers, Murry and Nash Lawson.
He was an Army veteran and had worked for Pannill Knitting and Sara Lee Corp. He was been a member of Minnie's Chapel Wesleyan Church for 45 years and served as Sunday school superintendent and taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years. He also was on the church board and was a lay speaker for the church.
Surviving are his wife, Rosie Clark Lawson of the home; two sons, Ralph Lawson of Martinsville and Randy Lawson of Chatham; a daughter, Lesia Murray of Mayodan, N.C.;' five grandchildren; and one sister, Evelyn Underwood of Roanoke.
Memorials may be made to Minnie's Chapel Wesleyan Church, c/o JoAnn Bishop, 598 Salem Highway, Stuart, Va. 24171.

Ethel F. May
The funeral for Ethel Ferguson May, 84, of 240 Riverside Drive, Bassett, who died March 5, 2006, at Stanleytown Health Care, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Collins Funeral Chapel. Pastors Stan Thompson and Marvin Wade will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the funeral Wednesday.
She was born Nov. 29, 1921, in Danville to Ernest L. Ferguson and Eula Simmons Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond Carl May on Sept. 18, 1999; two sisters, Shirley F. Stephens and Sally F. Williams; and three brothers, Henry Ferguson, Jimmy Ferguson and Lee Ferguson.
She owned and operated a child care center in her home for more than 15 years, and she attended Leatherwood Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Bertha May Merriman of Bassett and Carolyn May Pruna of Reidsville, N.C.; a son, Joel Robert May of Blacksburg; a sister, Virginia F. Williams of Swansboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren, 144 Mount Hermon Church Road, Bassett, Va. 24055, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 3907, Martinsville, Va. 24115.
