Stephens

William Howell Stephens, age 86, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997 in Francis Marion Manor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo Medley Stephens.

He is survived by one sister, Minnie Seatz, Todd, N.C.; two brothers, Charles O. Stephens of Sugar Grove, and Jay Stephens, Maryland; one half-sister, Faye Stephens, Lenoir, N.C.; one half-brother, Junior Stephens, Texas; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. in Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment was in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat.

Walls

Elmer Lee "Big Jim" Walls, age 73, of Konnarock, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

He was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He attended Azen Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Moore Walls; two stepdaughters, Francis Smith and Joann Allison, both of Glade Spring; four sisters, Lucille Russell, Joppa, Md., Magdalene Testerman, Laurel, Md., Ora Mae Wilson, Mountain City, Tenn., and Lois Walls, Edgewood, Md.; three brothers, Earnest Walls, Marion, Jack Walls, Oxford, Penn., and Dean Walls, Damascus; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, in Azen Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles E. "Jody" Blevins and the Rev. Randy Lester officiating. Burial was in Azen Cemetery.

Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus was in charge of arrangements.

Watterson

Charles Henry "Buddy" Watterson, age 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997 in Coral Gables, Fla. He was formerly of Marion and was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edna Watterson.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Berkowitz of Coral Gables, Fla., and Melody Mancuso of Bayport, N.Y.; two sons, William Watterson of Bowdoin College, Maine, and Charles "Chip" Watterson of Bayport, N.Y.; several grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ellen Bowman of Marathon, N.C.; one brother, Robert Watterson of Brentwood, Tenn.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Coral Gables, Fla.

Cummings

Viva Irene Cummings, age 84, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997 in Fredricksburg.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Joycelyn Koval, Ocala, Fla.; two sons, William F. Barr, Pompano Beach, Fla., and Sidney L. Barr, Waynesboro; five sisters: Catherine Russell, Augusta, Ga., Margaret Hoth , Franklin Park, Ill., Ida Johnson and Dorothy Russell, both of Chilhowie; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Lebanon United Methodist Church with the Rev. R.J. Cullop officiating. Burial followed in the Lebanon UMC Cemetery.

Newberry Funeral Home in Chilhowie was in charge of arrangements.

Davis

James Ralph Davis, age 67, of Chicago, Ill., died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997.

He was born at Loves Mill on April 30, 1929 and raised in Chicago, Ill. He was a Marine Corps veteran and received the highest degree in Electronics from the University of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents, George E. Davis and Ernestine Hamm Davis Anderson.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel M. Boggs Davis; one daughter, Susan M. Weismayer, Suwanee, Ga.; one son-in-law, Kirt Weismayer, Suwanee, Ga.; three grandchildren, Amanda, Adam and Rebecca Weismayer, all of Suwanee, Ga.; two brothers, Richard A. Davis, Marion, and David G. Davis, Hendersonville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 17, at Seaver- Brown Funeral Home with burial in Mt. View Cemetery in Chilhowie.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Fleenor

Margaretta Francisco Fleenor, age 77, widow of Fred Fleenor, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law: Janice Meade of Landrum, S.C., Brenda and Charles Harrison of Taylors, S.C., Barbara and Eddie Choate of High Point, N.C., Kay Fleenor, and Ann and Palma Ball, all of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Joyce Fleenor of Marion; one sister, Geneva Sue Smith of Scott County; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. in Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Pat Gilbert officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Hash

Ruth Mozelle Hash, age 76, of Deland, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997 in Mariner Health Care of Orange City.

Mrs. Hash was born in Groseclose and moved to Deland, Fla., three years ago. She was the widow of Herman L. Hash and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 4667 in Marion.

She is survived by one brother, Marvin L. Waddell, Mercer, Penn.; one son, Richard E. Waddell, Deland, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Joy Bilovus, Orion, Mich.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will also be fondly remembered by one very special cousin, Kay Devault, Marion.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Entombment followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Ormond Beach, Fla. 32127.

Mitchell

Clarence Preston "Snooks" Mitchell, age 76, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997 at his home in Marion.

Mr. Mitchell lived most of his life in Smyth County. He retired from Virginia House Furniture and attended the Antioch Baptist Church in Marion.

Survivors include his wife, Ardella Mitchell, Marion; two stepdaughters, Theresa Stewart, Richmond, and Annette Thomas, Ellicott City, Md.; three stepsons, Frederick Hughes and Theodore Hughes, both of Baltimore, Md., and Dewight McDaniels, San Francisco, Calif.; three sisters, Betty Jeffries and Julia Jones, both of Hollis, N.Y., and Catherine Gaylord, Mistah, N.J.; five stepgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Cox officiating. Burial will follow in the New River Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Orr

Kennett Eugene Orr, age 74, of Catawba, died Thursday, Jan.
9, 1997 at his home.
He was born April 26, 1922 in Rich Valley. He and his wife have been residents of Catawba Valley since 1959. He was a charter member of the Catawba Ruritan Club.

Mr. Orr had been involved with the Boy Scouts for many years and earned awards such as the Silver Beaver and Wood Badge. He was a lifetime member of the Catawba Volunteer Fire Department. He was a Sunday School teacher at Central United Methodist Church for 25 years. He was retired from the Roanoke County School System, where he was Assistant Principal at Northside High School for 18 years and Assistant Principal at Arnold R. Burton Vocational School for eight years.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie Ann Fringer Orr; one daughter, Kathleen L. Orr; one son and daughter-in-law, Kennett R. and Karen Givens Orr; two grandsons, Joshua Kennett Orr and Jonathan William Orr, both of Catawba; one sister, Doris Orr, Rich Valley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Ross M. Orr Jr. and wife Sandy, Bethlehem, Penn., and Dr. William K. Orr and wife Lois, Fishersville; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Central United Methodist Church with Dr. William Davis officiating. Interment was in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central United Methodist Church Elevator Fund in memory of Gene Orr.

Lotz Salem Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
