Killinger

Bernice Ritchey Killinger, age 80, formerly of Marion, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997 at the home of her daughter in Indian Trail, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Killinger, and was the daughter of the late Rev. Ernest Ritchey, a Methodist minister in Marion.

Mrs. Killinger and her husband were lifetime residents of Marion. Mrs. Killinger was an active founding member of the Wilderness Road Garden Club. Her dedicated efforts to make a Nature Trail along the Middle Fork of the Holston River have been carried on by numerous Girl and Boy Scouts, Job Corp students and the Town of Marion.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca "Becky" Killinger and Randy Gillis of Indian Trail, N.C.; two granddaughters, Bryna Suzette Allen of Dallas, Texas, and Wendy Michelle Allen of Boulder, Colo.; two sisters Helen Lambert and husband of Roanoke, and Inez Barker of Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Commander Glen Ritchey and wife of Washington State; one brother-in-law and wife, Dr. George P. Killinger of Marion; 11 nephews and two nieces.

A memorial service will be held at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Marion on May 10 and later a sprinkling of her ashes over her husband's grave at Round Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church roof and expansion fund, at Mrs. Killinger's request.

Lowe-DeBord Funeral Home in Charlotte, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Scott

Carl "Buck" Scott, age 71, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997 in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.

Mr. Scott was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Marine Corp. He was a member of the Furnace Hill Lutheran Church and was retired from Brunswick Corporation after 37 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret E. Scott of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Eugene and Anita Scott of Roanoke; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia "Pat" and David Bowman, Barbara Ann and Willie Anderson, and Rebecca "Becky" Scott, all of Marion; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister and brother-in-law, Dorthy and Sam Haga of Plainsville, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Stella Robinson of Marion; one aunt, Mattie Moxley of Marion; several nieces and nephews; two special nieces, Norma Reedy of Marion, and Jean BaumGardner of Los Alamos, N.Mex.; a very special little girl, Anna Bowman; three special friends, Glenna Sexton, Polly Sturgill, and Shirley Burgess.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with Vicar Cecie Haxton officiating. Burial will follow in the Attoway Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel.

Smith

Gladys Pearson Smith, age 86, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997 in the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

Mrs. Smith was born in Virginia but moved to New York City as a teenager where she lived for more than 70 years.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Smith, New York City; two sisters, Mary Ella "Boots" Valentine and Kathleen Foote, both of Marion; one sister-in-law, Juanita Pearson, Pearisburg; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Nolan Wolfe officiating. Burial was in Round Hill Cemetery.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

White

David Edwin White Sr., age 68, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997 at his home in Glade Spring. He was a native of Smyth County but had lived most of his life in Washington County.

Mr. White attended the Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church. He was a former employee of the Olin Corporation and Simmons-Rand Company.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Woolwine White; one son, David E. White Jr., Glade Spring; three daughters, Teresa White Dutton, Bristol, Carol White Puckett, Glade Spring, and Janet White Mutter, Marion; one brother, George Franklin White, Glade Spring; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 1, in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tim Graham, the Rev. Dennis Blazier and Jim Litton officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 106 Kirkwood St., Glade Spring, VA 24340; or to the Glade Spring Lifesaving Crew, 412 E. Glade St., Glade Spring, VA 24340.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon handled arrangements.

Broyles

A. Kent Broyles, age 92, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. He retired from Automotive Service & Supply Company and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Miller Broyles of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Dwane and Sarah Broyles of Spartanburg, S.C.; one sister, Pauline Oliver of Bristol, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Cynthia Powell and Dottie Broyles, both of Spartanburg, S.C., and Caroline Broyles of Columbia, S.C.

Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. J.N. Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 1 to 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 115 S. Church St., Marion, VA 24354.

Burnop

Carl C. Burnop, age 81, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Warren Burnop of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and William Jones of Kiawah Island, S.C.; two sisters, Helen Harris of Marion, and Elva Greer of Rock Falls, Ill.; one brother, Lee Burnop of Marion; two grandchildren, Chad H. Groseclose and Jason G. Groseclose, both of Charleston, S.C.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Weston B. Guthrie officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Collins

Rebecca Jane Eller Collins, age 82, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was the widow of John Wesley Collins Jr.

Mrs. Collins was a member of the Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Owens and Renie Haga, both of Chilhowie; one son, George W. Collins, Chilhowie; five sisters, Mary Manuel, Damascus, Bertha Lee Whitaker and Pearl Jovall, both of Pennsylvania, Nokie Lampkins, Goochland, and Edith Price, Elkton, Md.; three brothers, R.C. Eller, Bristol, Tenn., Glen Eller, Maryland, and Ernest Eller, Abingdon; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 5, in the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. Burial will be in the Sulphur Spring Cemetery.

Newberry Funeral Home in Chilhowie is in charge of arrangements.

Gillenwater

Dorothy "Dot" Henderson Gillenwater, age 79, of Saltville, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. She was the widow of Roby P. Gillenwater.

She was a member of the Saltville Baptist Church, and a member of the Saltville Chapter No. 151 Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a funeral director as well as one of the owners and operators at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home. She was also a past secretary of the Southwest Funeral Directors Association for many years and held a membership with the National Funeral Directors Association and the National Selected Morticians.

Survivors include one daughter, Whitley Gillenwater Cardwell, Saltville; two granddaughters, Rachel and Sarah Cardwell; one sister, Mrs. Mark (Sally Irene) Farris, Abingdon; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Jividen and the Rev. Benny Frye officiating. Burial was in Elizabeth Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad.

Pratt

Nina Kate Pratt entered into eternal life on Feb. 1, 1997 at the Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville. She was the last surviving child of Nellie and James Thomas Buchanan and was the widow of Marion Thompson Pratt of Locust Cove.

She leaves behind six grieving children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Survivors include Marion and Gene Griffin of San Antonio, Texas; Stuart and Dreama Pratt of Rural Retreat; Eleanor and Dick Wassum of Independence; Linda and John DiYorio of Wytheville; Janet Pratt; and Jane and Charlie Clark of Rich Valley.

Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. They include Dr. Mac Griffin, Tippy Matherley, James, Tim, Todd and Steven Pratt, Chris and Ashley DiYorio, Champ, Will and Ben Clark. Great-grandchildren are Chace Griffin, Gabriel DiYorio, and Jamie Matherley.

A service celebrating her life was held Monday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Locust Cove Presbyterian Church where she was a charter member. The Rev. Rich Cardo and the Rev. Luther Watson officiated. Burial was in the Ridgedale Cemetery.
