Rev. Leonard R. Cox, age 87, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was born May 22, 1909 in Smyth County, the son of the late Charles and Pearl Cox.

"Buster" was raised in Marion, attending school at the "Old Red Barn." In his early twenties, he moved to Gary, W.Va., to work in the coal mines.

In 1938, Elder Cox was baptized "In Jesus' Name" by Booker T. Jones of Gary, W.Va. While sick in January of 1939, he received the Holy Ghost. He was ordained as an Elder in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World and preached in various churches in West Virginia.

Other outstanding accomplishments in Elder Cox's life are in 1942, he was ordained as an Elder in the Emmanuel Tabernacle Church of the Apostolic Faith in Columbus, Ohio; in 1952, he was married on July 5 to Ruby Christopher in Marion and moved to Arlington where he pastored churches in northern Virginia and Washington D.C. for 15 years; in 1966, he was ordained in the Independent American Pentecostal Church in Washington D.C.; in 1968, he returned with his wife and children to Marion to take care of his father; in 1969, he began preaching at the First Baptist Church in Marion after the death of Rev. Campbell and remained the pastor at the First Baptist Church for 17 years; and also during this time, Elder Cox had a weekly, half-hour Sunday ministerial radio program on WMEV, WOLD, WCCR and Saltville.

Dr. Cox is survived by his wife, Ruby Christopher Cox of Marion; six children: Robert Floyd Cox of Largo, Md., Charles William Cox of Ontario, Canada, Esther Jawan Cox Chambers of Sanford, N.C., Deborah LaJean Cox Valazquez of Charlotte, N.C., Maria Robinette Cox of Silver Spring, Md., Leonard Christopher Cox of Marion; one brother, Ulysses Lawrence Cox of Marion; 21 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Antioch Baptist Church with District Elder Lester Turner Sr., Dr. William Weldon, Rev. Ed Long, Rev. Carl Tinsley, Elder Edward Ramsey, Bishop Samuel Boysau and Minister Nolan Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Seaver- Brown Funeral Chapel.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Friend

Alice Maude Cook Friend, age 92, of Max Meadows, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997.

She was born Jan. 23, 1905 to William Stuart and Mary Emma Reynolds Cook. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gaylord Moffett Friend; one daughter, Ruby Friend Dean; a daughter-in-law, Linda Stone Friend; three brothers and five sisters.

Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Malcolm R. and Margaret Friend, Max Meadows, Gaylord and Billie Friend, Dallas, N.C., Edwin Friend, Roanoke, and Hugh Brown Friend, Marion; three daughters and son-in-law, Evelyn F. and Nathaniel Alexander of Kent, Ohio, Jean F. Fortune, Pulaski, and Mary F. Mabe, Wytheville; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Grubb Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Interment followed in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of arrangements.

Hopkins

Hazel Alline Foster Hopkins, age 75, of Christiansburg, died at her home Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997.

She is survived by her husband, James Hopkins; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Susie Foster, Thomas and Linda Foster, and Archie Foster, all of Christiansburg; two daughters and son-in-law, Shirley and Thomas Price, and Mary Ellen Graham, all of Christiansburg; a special stepdaughter and her husband, Sandra and Robert Taylor of Christiansburg; one sister, Ida Belle Richards of Christiansburg; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. in the Richardson-Horne Chapel with Pastor Carl Ratcliffe officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in her name to the New River Hospice, 111 West Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073.

Hutton

Mary Creloa Hutton, age 84, widow of J. Hugh Hutton, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Ron Hutton and Robert Hutton.

Mrs. Hutton was a member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus and later, after moving to Marion, became an active member of Marion Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Jim and Phyllis Hutton of Blacksburg, Joe and Suzanne Hutton of Abingdon, and Betty Hutton of Chapel Hill, N.C.; five grandchildren: Ron Hutton of Chapel Hill, N.C., Cynthia Ferrell of Richmond, Chris Hutton of Greenville, N.C., Vicki Hutton of New Orleans, La., and Candice Hawkins of Blacksburg.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Marion Baptist Church with Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Marion Baptist Church, 1258 N. Main St., Marion, VA 24354.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mullins

Edward Mullins, age 70, of Tazewell, Tenn., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997 at the Jefferson City Health & Rehab of Jefferson City, Tenn. He was a member of Elm Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Mullins Brickey, and his parents, Isaac and Causbie Mullins.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Mullins of Maryland; three daughters, Wanda Worley of Christiansburg, Brenda Dancy and Linda Bailey, both of Marion; four sons, Wayne Mullins of Chilhowie, Gene Mullins of Rocky Mt., Tommy Mullins of Saltville, and Tony Mullins of Maryland; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Hatfield of Tazewell, Tenn., and Mary Wolfe of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Henry Stewart of Rogersville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at the McNeil Funeral Home Chapel in Sneedville, Tenn., with the Rev. Steven Gibson and the Rev. William Gibson officiating. Interment was in the Gibson Cemetery.

Sturgill

Allen Wayne Sturgill, age 50, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was a native of Smyth County but had lived in Naples Fla., for more than 20 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Sturgill, Naples, Fla.; his parents, Clarence J. and Alice Sturgill, Chilhowie; one brother, Larry D. Sturgill, Austin, Ark.; his maternal grandmother, Lizzie Kate Blevins, Marion; two nieces, one nephew, and one great-nephew.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. military honors will be conducted by the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Trail

J.D. Trail, age 73, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997 in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.

Mr. Trail was a native of Smyth County and had served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Musser, Rural Retreat; five sisters, Maggie Trail, Nannie Orr, Doris Murray, Helen Falke, all of Marion, and Bessie Orr, Chilhowie; four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
