Cregger

Carl Sidney Cregger, age 90, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997 at his home in Saltville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Odell Cregger; one son, Robert Cregger; and one grandchild.

He was a member of the First Church of God and was a retired employee of the Olin Corporation.

Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Allison, Saltville, and Sue Rowe, Roanoke; one sister, Sarah Brooks, Saltville; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Mumpower and Dr. Woodrow McIntyre officiating. Burial was in Mount Rose Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Long

Harold Long, age 78, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997 in the Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News.

Mr. Long was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Keyes Long. He was retired from the Tenneco Deep Sea Ventures in Glouster with 20 years of service. He was a member of the West Hampton Baptist Church, and a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, St. Tammany Lodge #5. He was also a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Survivors include one son, Michael P. Long, Williamsburg; one daughter, Roxi Lawrence, Salem, Ore.; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted today, March 1, at 3 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Burial will follow in the Slemp Cemetery in Sugar Grove. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Prater

Bessie Richardson Prater, age 90, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mrs. Prater was preceded in death by her husband, Rush D. Prater; two sons, James Prater and David Amos Prater; one grandson, David A. "Pete" Prater.

She is survived by four daughters: Mary Finley of Atkins, Peggy Woods and Virginia Harris, both of Marion, and Ramona Goodman of Summerville, S.C.; three sons: Edgar Prater of Sevierville, Tenn., Curtis Prater of Marion, and Richard Prater of Chilhowie; three daughters-in-law, Sue Thomas Prater of Sevierville, Tenn., Mary Louthian Prater of Marion, and Mary Ann Stuart Prater of Chilhowie; four sons-in-law: Jack Finley, Roger Woods and Johnny Harris, all of Marion, and Phillip Goodman of Summerville, S.C.; one sister, Pearl Crewey Poston of Marion; 29 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, one step-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy, Brown Subdivision, Marion, with the Rev. Paul Horton and the Rev. Chester Hensley officiating. Burial followed in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Scott

Joseph Justin Scott, age 81, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a partner in Scott Furniture Company in Marion along with his brothers, W.W. Scott Jr. and James Scott, for 37 years. He attended National Business College in Roanoke.

Mr. Scott was a charter member and past president of Marion Lions Club, a charter member and former Commander of VFW Post 4667, past president of Marion Retail Merchants Association, and a member of Smyth County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #31, and a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, as SK-lc on an attack transport, the U.S.S. DuPage. He received the American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific Medals.

Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his father, Wilson White Scott; his mother, Lillie Stephenson Scott; two brothers, John M. and James S. Scott; and a sister, Martha S. Kingham.

He is survived by his wife, Alpha Johnstone Scott of Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa Edgerton-Scott and Fredrick R. Edgerton Jr. of Shreveport, La., Susan S. and James D. Brooks of Williamsburg, Elizabeth S. and Dr. James L. Gates of Marion; one brother, Wilson W. Scott Jr. of Marion; four grandchildren: Carrie Jane Brooks, Jeffrey Scott Brooks, Emily Raasch Gates and Justin Lewis Gates; five nephews and three nieces.

Funeral services will be held today, March 1, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. J.N. Howard officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 115 S. Church St., Marion, VA 24354.

Scott

Margaret Emma Lee Richardson Scott, age 65, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.

Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Eugene "Buck" Scott.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Eugene and Anita Scott of Roanoke; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia "Pat" and David Bowman, Barbara Ann and Willie Anderson, and Rebecca "Becky" Scott, all of Marion; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one sister, Stella Robinson, Marion; a special sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Sam Haga of Plainsville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; two special nieces, Norma Reedy and Jean Baumgardner; a very special little girl, Anna Bowman; three special friends, Glenna Sexton, Polly Sturgill, and Shirley Burgess.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with Pastor Ed Schaack and Vicar Cecie Haxton officiating. Burial followed in Attoway Cemetery.

Sexton

Velma McKinney Sexton, age 66, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997 at Prince William Hospital in Manassas after a long illness.

She was born in Wythe County on Oct. 31, 1930, the daughter of the late Fred Madison and Nanna Saferight McKinney.

She is survived by her companion of 25 years, Bobby Reece; two daughters, Rebecca Reece of Manassas Park, and Wanda Gray of Manassas; four sons, Ray Sexton of Edenburg, Doug Sexton of Fort Valley, Harold Sexton Jr. of Colonial Beach, and James Sexton of Manassas; three brothers, Ira M. McKinney of Marion, Jean McKinney of Alexandria, and Dick McKinney of Nokesville; seven sisters: Elsie Hegger of Doniphan, Mo., Ella Roberts of Phoenix, Ariz., Iris Rich of Galax, Mary Miller of Bristol, Mozelle Eversole, Naomi King, both of Wytheville, and Stella Cox of Rural Retreat; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Price Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. C. Eugene Meek officiating. Interment was in the Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas.

Price Funeral Home in Manassas was in charge of arrangements.

Blockston

Eric Macy Blockston, infant son of Rhonda Faye Blevins and Jim Blockston of Red Line, Penn., died Sunday, March 2, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his maternal grandmother, Marie Blevins, Marion; paternal grandparents, James and Patricia Blockston, Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Andrea Wilson; one brother, Zachary Blockston.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 4, at 3 p.m. at the Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brewer

Tinia Louise Brewer, age 95, died Friday, Feb. 28, 1997 in a nursing home in Abingdon.

She was a native of Smyth County and was the widow of the Rev. Berl H. Brewer who was a former pastor at Wood Howell Christian Church in Bristol and several other churches in the area.

Survivors include one sister, Grace Jones, Abingdon; four nieces, Carole Colley, Abingdon, Bernice Dunn and Mary Lou Fontenot, both of Bristol, and June Nottingham, Kingsport, Tenn.; two nephews, Oliver Talbert and Randolph Talbert, both of Saltville.

Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in West End Cemetery in Wytheville with the Rev. Robert Tolar Jr. officiating. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, 20290 Wood Howell Road, Bristol, VA 24202.

Farris Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
