Powers

Winnie Brewer Powers, age 90, widow of A.R. Powers, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.

She is survived by six daughters: Pearl Johnson of Chilhowie, Betty Creasy of Marion, Lucille Reed and Shelby Jean Powers, both of Killeen, Texas, Carol Creasy of Glade Spring, and Judy Aiken of Lithonia, Ga.; two sons, Wayne Powers of Jenkin Jones, W.Va., and Donald Powers of Texas; one sister, Frances Jones of Chilhowie.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 13, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Creasy officiating. Burial was in Grosses Creek Cemetery in Chilhowie.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Tibbs

Curtis Ray Tibbs, age 82, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997 at his home in the Groseclose community of Rural Retreat.

Mr. Tibbs was a retired employee of the General Shale Corp. and a member of the Groseclose First Church of God. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Lillian Smith Tibbs, and one son, David Lee Tibbs.

He is survived by three daughters, Ila Jean Pickle, Rural Retreat, Linda Armstrong, Marion, and Lori Hayes, Crockett; two sons, Danny Tibbs, Rocky Gap, and Curtis Tibbs, Atkins; three sisters, Ruth Tibbs, Marion, Mary Faine, Damascus, and Dora Lee Woods, Atkins; two brothers, James Armstrong, Atkins, and Claude Tibbs, Marion; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 13, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Watson Sr., and the Rev. Thomas Bunting officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose. The family requests that those who prefer make memorials to the Hospice of America (Wythe County Chapter).

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat was in charge of arrangements.

Haga

Fred Allen Haga, 56, died Friday, March 14, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mr. Haga was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and had worked at the Auto Village in Chilhowie for 38 years. He was also an active CBer.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Haga, Marion; three daughters, Nevada Jane Haga, Wanda Faye Hankla, both of Marion, and Christina Vanhoy, Chilhowie; two sons, Roby Allen Haga, Marion, and Anthony Wayne Haga, Chilhowie; five sisters, Rozelle Stewart, Lynchburg, Lucille Tibbs, Nebo, Golda Tilson, Marion, Shirley Ririe, Salt Lake City, Utah, Wanda Hardy, Pineland, Texas; two brothers, Gale Haga, Kerhonkson, N.Y., and Jim Haga, Marion; two daughters-in-law, Cindy Haga and Norma Haga; two sons-in-law, John Hankla Jr. and Scott Vanhoy; 10 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and a special friend, Gene Little and family.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 17, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gene Little officiating. Burial followed in Wassum Cemetery.

Barnett's Funeral Home in Marion was in charge of the arrangements.

Hash

James V. Hash, 87, formerly of Smyth County, died Saturday, March 8, 1997 in Peach Bottom, Penn.

He is survived by two sons and three daughters; three sisters, Ethel Hash, Johnson City, Tenn., Belle Rowland, Francis Marion Manor, and Nancy Rhudy, Marion; two brothers, Major Hash, Chilhowie, and Max Hash, Pleasantville, N.J.

Funeral services and burial were held March 12 in Peach Bottom, Penn.

DeWald Funeral Home in Quarryville, Penn., was in charge of arrangements.

Kirk

Beatrice Roberta Kirk, 53, of Rhoadesville, died Friday, March 14, 1997 in Fairfax Hospital. She was a member of the Manassas Free Will Baptist Church and was attending Franconia Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. She had been employed with NEC Technology for more than eight years. She was preceded in death by her parents, James O. and Gertrude B. Paxton.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Rev. Paul Edward Kirk; four sons, James E. Kirk, of Bealton, Paul David Kirk of New Baltimore, Larry a. Kirk of Sumerduck, and William W. Kirk of Catlett; two daughters, Beatrice "Elaine" Miller of Midland, and Rebecca Ann Pembleton of New Baltimore; four sisters, Anne Paxton, Grottoes, Dorothy Paxton of Manassas, Joyce Sisson of Manassas Park, and Lena Leonard of Fayetteville, N.C.; nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at the Valley View Baptist Church in Sugar Grove with the Rev. Lester Horton and the Rev. Raymond Bevins officiating. Burial followed in the Kirk Family Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Moser

Eliza Pickle Moser, 79, widow of Charles Baker Moser, died Monday, March 17, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mrs. Moser was a native of Smyth County having lived here most of her life. She worked at Harwood in Marion, Supreme Mills in Chilhowie and at the Bonham's Packing House for a number of years.

She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Moser McClure, Chilhowie; two sons, James E. Moser, DeBary, Fla., and Gene Moser, Taylors, S.C.; two sisters, Nannie Pickle, Chilhowie, and Linna Eller, Peach Bottom, Penn.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 20, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Otis Barker, the Rev. Avery Sheets and the Rev. Mike Haga officiating. Interment will follow in the Thomas Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, March 19, at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Parsons

Glen Charles Parsons, 68, of Chilhowie, formerly of Ashe county, N.C., died Monday, March 17, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mr. Parsons was born in Ashe County, N.C., May 10, 1928 to Joseph and Sarah Leek Parsons.

He is survived by four sisters, Barbara Childress of Jefferson, N.C., Marie Forrester of Lincolnton, N.C., Gladys Van Hoosier of Seven Mile Ford, and Faye Holcomb, Sparta, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel with interment in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson, N.C. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, Jefferson, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Popperwill

Barbara Salmons Popperwill, 39, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital, where she was formerly employed at Smyth County Community Hospital.

She is survived by one daughter, Deborah F. Russell of Marion; her father, Eugene Salmons of Marion; her grandmother, Stella Mae Salmons of Marion; three sisters, Brenda Hutson and Louise Fedorchuk, both of Marion, and Patty Gainey of Hartsville, S.C.; one brother, Eugene Salmons Jr., Millers Creek, N.C.; three grandchildren, Brittiany Russell, Paige Russell and Jessica Russell.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with burial in Round Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, March 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Smith

Joyce Cardwell Smith, 62, died Friday, March 14, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Smyth County where she had lived most of her life.

Survivors include her husband, Sherman Smith Jr.; one son, Randall E. Smith; her mother, Flossie McNew Cardwell, Saltville; two brothers, Everett Clifton Cardwell Jr., and Freddie Joe Cardwell, both of Saltville; one sister, Betty Cardwell Mitchell, Saltville; one grandson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in Mount Rose Cemetery Mausoleum, Glade Spring, with the Rev. Robert Krenick officiating. Entombment was in the mausoleum.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon was in charge of the arrangements.
